Remote wipe? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any apps out there that can remote wipe, or at least remotely set a pattern lock on your phone?

Lookout can wipe your phone remotely as well as wave secure. Both of these require a subscription though. I'm not aware of a free one though.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App

but you have to set them up on your phone first. I can't do that right now, I just wanna wipe it.

I believe es security manager lets you remote lock without a subscription. You have to set a password and then send an sms to your phone with a special pattern that includes that password, iirc.

By the way if you already lost the phone, you won't be able to remote wipe it.

also
if you are running a rom like evil's desire HD rom and you sign up for HTC sense you can login to the web page https://www.htcsense.com/us/ and wipe the phone using that
but you have to have been running a rom that supports it like the above mentioned

Actually, there's a new app that can at least locate your device after it's already lost. I'll go digging for it, I read it in an article recently - gotta go find it. Essentially, since the new Market is available, you can download the app via the Web after your device is already lost. It will download to your phone and start giving you GPS coordinates. I'm not sure if it also offers a remote-wipe feature...I'll reply back if/when I find it!

Stolen Phone

Hey,
I've been lookin for an App that can locate my phone via GPS if it gets stolen, and found the app, Where's My Droid, but it seems like it have a limitation, coz u have to enable GPS before getting the phone stolen, or lost, nd lets be honest, it's a battery killer, and you wouldn't enable it everytime you are out So have any of you seen a program like this, or would have the functions like:
Silent enable GPS via "Special SMS"
Silently reporting to your spare phone with location
Automatic detection if the SIM has been changed and send back the new number
Runs on startup silent and is active at all times
Password protected Menu
At my old HTC Touch Diamond WM 6.1 i had a software called W.I.M.P ( Where's My Phone) wich had these functions, wich made it easier to track a phone if it got stolen.
Hope someone out there have a solution

Just looking at it now, and wow!! As far as i can see, this is exactly what Im looking for are you using the app your self?

I am using wavesecure as I got a deal on the subscription for just £10 for the year.
It is a very good piece of software and works very well.
It uses gps to track the phone but will only activate it if it needs to send the location of the phone so not on all the time.
Would recommend it.

I use wavesecure its great!
I got a subscription via the MoDaCo Plus scheme.

Another vote for Wavesecure.
Their service is impeccable - I have logged ticket requests asking general questions about Wavesecure and their responses have been very through and within 12hrs.
The application is great, make sure you follow the guide on installing the application as a system application, which will make it hard reset proof in case some clown steals your phone and tried to wipe it.
EDIT: I cant post links outside of this forum so I cant hotlink you to their site and guide.
GPS only drains battery when used (i.e. when you open an app that needs GPS like Maps etc.) and when u see the icon in the TopBar. Theres no need to turn it off. I always have it enabled and there is no noticable battery drain...

The problem with wheresmyDroid is that you can't remote enable it, so It's pretty easy for the thief to turn gps off

A free alternative would be "Lookout mobile security"

You can't just uninstall it without a password, but it can be removed if the thief does a hard reset. If he does that before changing the sim card, this program is useless. If he doesn't hard reset, you can locate your phone and you will get an email when he changes the sim card.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I would definitely recommend WaveSecure.
If someone changes the sim card, it sends a text message to any number(s) you have set up for it. The text message contains the phone number of the newly inserted sim card.
I've been using it since the start, and I wouldn't be without it.
OK, I know it's not free, but it's very cheap compared to replacing your Desire!
Take a look at Prey in the market or at preyproject.com
Completely free, and starts tracking your phone once activated and sending you regular reports with location, ip and traceroutes. If the sim is replaced it can send an SMS to another phone number. They also have apps for PC and Macs. Nice to have it all under one account

[Q] HTC Aria stolen - advice?

My aria was stolen and there wasn't any anti-theft software like mobile defense on it.
Is there anything I can do to get it back or track it, or is it a lost cause?

Sorry to hear about your phone being stolen. I would troll craigslist and ebay, but even if you find it on there it would be hard to recover.
As for advice, install my lookout on your next phone. You can locate your phone from any computer and also make it "scream"
yeah look out is the way to go...
Pretty much a lost cause at this point. Next time, if there is a next time, you may want to look into apps like the above mentioned or Where's My Droid, which may help since they allow you to locate the phone using the GPS.

None of the apps mentioned before will do you any good if you have GPS turned off. Tasker can remotely turn on GPS, locate your phone and send you the location by simply texting a key phrase.

This is something you have to build in Tasker. I have mine set to enable GPS and open a GPS tracker app that can be monitored on the web. Only good if sky is visible.

You can use one if you're paranoid but in my opinion its not needed. Just watch and review everything you download and look over what permissions they ask for. Always download content from trusted sources and also read the comments/reviews to see what others feedback would be.
Not always. But its definitely nice to have. Get lookout on the market. It will automatically scan apps. If not for that its great for finding your phone if its lost.

Yes I also HIGHLY recommend Lockout for total package. We don't need virus scanner but even if we had virus the scanner won't pick it up as it has to be in the definition.db for it to work.

You create a log in at look out's web site and if you should lose it you can remotely turn on the GPS to track it, or turn on a siren type alert tone so you find it if you lost it in your house our your car. If you have the paid service there are some extras like remote lock, and remote wipe.

Whoa. Thanks. Setting this up immediately lol sounds incredibly useful and good tool to have so theres no worrying about the Ifs.
Question about the paid service, say I DO lose my phone and want to remote lock and/or wipe, can i pay for it at that time then use that feature, meaning i dont have to pay for it until i actually need it. Or does it require some setting up on the phone's end?

!!MUST READ!! Allow Installation of Non-Market Apps!!! WITHOUT UPDATE!

Go here and follow all instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107499. This will make the option to install non-market apps straight on your device (HTC Aria) appear!!! Enjoy!
Known issues:
- Unable to send/receive mms (since settings are erased - maybe re-inputting them will enable it again?...)
- HTC Wallpaper list disappears (These wallpapers can still be accessed in their root folder - system/customize/resource)

I tried this on two Arias running 2.2 and it worked, but it disabled the HTC Wallpaper section options (the select screen comes up but there are no wsllpapers shown) and the MMS send/receive also doesn't work. As hard reset fixed these issues but also removed the "unknown sources" option.
I can load wsllpapers via the live wallpapers and gallery options, but I can't fix the MMS issue.

it did work for me to unable 3rd party apps installation although it did reset the wallpaper and made the wallpapers disappear from the list but who cares.. I dont use MMS feature, so cant comment on that..

Has anyone tried manually restoring MMS settings?

I'm glad I waited for more replies.
as long as I can download the .apk, its really not that big of a deal to me anyway. Just have to connect phone to pc, find the file, drag it to my computer and then install it with android injector. This works for amazon apps and any app I have download from here.
If u rooted ur phone you would not need this and rooted phones have been able to do this for quit sometime now. Duh!

What .apk are you talking about? There is no .apk you download to unlock this option. You have to clear the data of two specific system apps to do this.

I THINK that he's talking about root not being that big of a deal as long as he can sideload...I'm pretty sure. Over a long time of being on forums, I have learned to read and understand the most incomprehensible of verbiage.
sorry, i was generalizing. basically if you can download the app, even if you cant install it from your phone, there is a simple method to get it installed when you get to your computer.
edit: yes, I was talking about how easy it is to sideload. just my opinion. easier to do than possibly lose mms options with this method to get the unknown sources checkbox.
just going to wait for the actual update. which better come soon. as it was supposed to be out before this thread even started.

The update was out before this thread started but only some (very few) people got it. So if someone can't wait for it, since it seems like no one else is going to get it, and they can afford to lose the mms setting (which could be reset manually), then they can do this method.

Bringing Epic in for service - how to conceal email?

So, yeah, I'm going to see if there's anything specifically wrong with my Epic in terms of the abysmal data speeds and nonexistent GPS I've been dealing with. I've pulled the SD card out but I don't want the folks in the Sprint store to have access to all of my email. Is there an advisable way to conceal my email (and contacts, for that matter)?

If you really want to be secure, you can use an app that backs up your contacts to SD card (plenty non rooted ones on the Market) and then do a factory reset.
You can also just remove your email account, there is an option under "Accounts and Sync" located in Settings.
I don't think they will be looking at your email though, but I understand your privacy.

Not to my knowledge their isnt. You will probibly have to go into Settings>Privacy>Factory Reset and that will wipe your phone back to original but you will lose your apps and MMS. There are ways to back those up as stated ^^^^ but as far as you email and contacts. those are backed up through Gmail. Also from what ive noticed you cant just delete your gmail account off your phone.... Well at least mine wont let me. you can unsync it but then can easily check the box if they wanted too. Good Luck

This is way off topic but i noticed in your sig marcussant that Sprint updating isnt working? is that why my phone says error when tring to update my PRL?
PS. sorry to OP for going off topic
as far as I can tell, the issue with simply removing the google account is that one can't do that unless there's also another google account linked to the phone. in my case, contacts, email, market, etc. are all linked to one account, so the phone won't allow me to delete it. I would imagine creating a replacement account would work, but I can't be bothered. the simple fix I found was to change my gmail password so that the gmail app can no longer sync. now my inbox is empty on the Epic and that's really all I wanted.
There is an app in the android market called app protector plus. It allows you to lock any app you desire. It requires the person to use a pin or pattern password to gain access. It will set you back $1.50 but is well worth it.

But if it's just linked to the phone lock that won't work for him. You have to give them the password when you give them the phone so they can work on it.
I brought my phone in for gps issues back with ec05 and all they did was a factory reset.
Make sure you tell them you don't want it reset! That's is sprints goto plan with a phone is to reset it and go from there.
i'd really think of throughing cwm on quick, making a nandroid, odin to stock ec05, let it update to ei22 see if the issue is still there, (I'm sure it will be) then bring it to them. When they can't fix it you can quickly reroot it and restore your backup.
If you can't or just won't back it up fully try "my backup" in the market and backup what you can. Trust me, if you hand them that phone they will reset it first thing they try.
This app is separate from the phone lock pattern. It only locks the applications you set to lock out.

And since your running stock, don't worry about it, sprint already knows everything you do on your phone, e-mail, data, you name it, through CarrierIQ. Your data speeds are slow, and your gps doesn't work because sprint is so busy using it to look through your phone and see where you are.

To OP: your best bet is to start over from scratch. ODIN EC05, don't accept the OTA update. Update your profile and PRL, then run GPS. If it all works, then flash the update or accept the OTA. After that finishes, test those 3 again.

I've actually done all this...I was rooted and running ROMs for months. There wasn't any real data speed improvement and battery life was lackluster with most of the ROMs, so I flashed back around a month ago in order to be able to bring the phone into Sprint. I've just been dragging my feet on it. Also, the GB I'm running is from the flashed update made available here, not the OTA.
