Quick build question

I just purchased a Droid2, and the add on's from Motorola are some of the best I've seen, mainly referring to their email app.
Anyway to port a whole build from one phone to another? If so, what goes into that. I'd love to see that build working on my HD2!
generallll generallll there is a general seccion why you post here i still dont understand...
im not even going to read this i can tell from the title it doesnt belong here just trying to keep the tread clear so newer people can stop getting confused
I am so sorry to have bothered the two of you. Since I have this forum linked, I usually don't go to the main HD2 section.
Guess this sums up XDA these days, elitest folks who MUST know more than us with questions!
Thanks for the heads up!
Oh and xpoloxp, I'll take a moment and teach you how to reply to threads that are legitimately in the wrong forum:
Your reply:
"generallll generallll there is a general seccion why you post here i still dont understand..."
How about this to have a touch of civility instead:
"There is a general section in case you didn't know and your post probably belongs there."
There! See how that makes one sound human while not mindlessly debasing someone and ASSUMING that they (when you said you) post things in the wrong forum all the time.
Class dismissed, and mod's, feel free to move this if it's needed.

was the OP not good info? i didnt see the thread anywhere in the dev section and a XOOM sytstem dump seems like dev worthy material... i know i would have never seen it if it was not posted... i dont spend to much time in the HD2 section, only this one. i get that it was posted already in another section but isnt that why there are specific sections on this forum? otherwise the first post of the system dump would be packed full all the people with all the diffrent phones and tablets. and i know i dont go searching all the other subforum stuff for GTAB related info...
so off my soap box now... lol thanks for the find and for the post!! cant wait to see what this brings us!!
I've been mucking about with the system image, trying to get it to run, from a VEGAn base, not been successful so far. But my experience with ROM devving has been scant, to say the least
Basically I tried pushing the xoom system files straight on top of a VEGAn install, which ran out of space! Then tried just the xoom system, which fit, but rebooted to recovery and "erasing MSC" came up.
Then tried a mix of both, which had permissions errors (no +x on /system/bin), which when fixed, led to a reboot to recovery.
And then my lunch break was over, so I had to get back to real work Will do some reading tonight (Now + 4 hours or so), and a more thorough look at how VEGAn hangs together, and how stuffing a honeycomb /system into it will help us out.

Thats why I said the third thread posted today about the same thing. It has been moved from the development thread multiple times because its not development. Without a boot.img this system dump is completely worthless. There still files that are needed from nvidia that are not in this dump.

ah i see, i didnt understand your reply. So the system dump cannot offer anything from a dev standpoint over the SDK that we already have?

I didn't know the other two threads were moved? I was wondering why they were in the general section because like the OP I was unaware what was needed to cook or port a ROM.
This would have been nice to know right away.

If we had a boot img yes but by itself it doesnt do much. Sorry but as a regular user here at xda I get tired of seeing the same thread started over and over and its usually by n00bs who think they've discovered the wheel. I'm not putting you in that group as I can tell by your questions you are genuinely interested and are thinking before you post. I promise you that several of us have links to places where info shows up first and that as soon as there is a rom worth using it will be posted her as sticky for everyone to try. Have some patience and let the devs do their work.........or should I "gtfo"
EDIT:I am not a dev
How they build a rom to NOOK without Boot Image
I know XOOM running Tagra 2. The first vision of SDK compatible for that Nooks processor. But however they run 3.0 on Nook. But now we have full system dump running on Xoom. Why we can't do like Nook guy's?
Because the Nook Honeycomb is made from a preview SDK without any optimizations made for Tegra 2. The Nook barely runs it.
We need a dump from a Tegra 2 device or access to the AOSP HC source library-neither of which are currently available.

Notice he said reading.....All I did was read for 2 weeks before I started posting and I havent started 1 thread. I agree that noobs need to ask questions but at least look for the answer first. If you end on the irc you will find I'm one of the first people to help someone. These constant new threads with the same subject matter are just cluttering up the forum and making it impossible for noobs to learn anything because the real information is buried in endless....THE HONEYCOMB XOOM DUMP IS OUT.....WHY DON"T WE HAVE A HONEYCOMB ROM YET!!!!!!!......threads. Or one of the 100 threads started asking how to install clockwork or a rom. Most questions can be answered in the sticky posts alone but no one wants to read. They want they info spelled out to them personally. This doesn't go for everyone but its certainly intended for the "honeycomb is on the Nook, why not on the GTab now that we have a system dump" crowd.

I agree on the need to read... I have read and read, I haven't asked because I was learning slowly about all things android. For me it is hard to ask questions for fear of being called a "noob" and told to "read and search". I appreciate what those who know have done for people like me.
Glad to see you did'nt leave frogman!
I'm very glad to see that everyone's excited, but this is not going to be an easy task, at least not for me (I can't speak for the other devs and modders of whom I bow to their collective genius).
A system dump is a start, but it's not the whole picture. It's like putting together a new bicycle that's sort of the same as the old kind, but with no manual and only half the parts. Trust me, I've already tried and for longer than you might know - so far no dice.
You want to help us out? If you plan to buy one of these tomorrow, try to root it and get us a boot.img. Or the unlocked bootloader. Or a full nvflash dump would be wonderful (that's how I got the Adam mod to work on a GTAB - not because I'm a genius but because I was darn lucky that NI was forced to release an nvflash dump). I'll even take an init.rc - anything would be appreciated.
But chants of "what don't we have a port yet?" over isn't going to help us at all (and you know who you are). Seriously, I would greatly appreciate it if you would please stop. Thanks in advance.

General Chat

I come from Xperia x10 and their we were having a thread for general chat,Offtopic,Helping some people if they ask for help
So it makes less spam and we can talk to each other here on xda and creating threads like "Brazilian GS2 thread,Indian GS2 thread, etc divides people
Ok guys/gals here it goes, Hopefully, this can become a sticky
Im gonna explain why I have decided to create this thread, and then I'm gonna explain what this thread will be all about.
First, why did I create this thread? I have noticed lately alot of members who like to get a little chatty in certain threads...whether its in the general section, dev section or themes & apps. Sometimes we can get a little carried away with our talking and it usually ends up with another member(s) telling these 2,3 sometimes 4 people to stay on topic and stop flooding the thread..Rightfully so. Sometimes, it also goes as far as a mod having to come into the thread, spend time cleaning it up, and then hand out bans, warnings, etc etc...rightfully so.
So, whats this thread all about? It's simple...THERE ARE NO TOPICS! we as XDA members sometimes like to talk..period! Within this thread we can talk about whatever we want...your fav rom, your fav theme, your fav theme with fav rom, other phones, cars, tv's, dslr camera, your job, where you live, post pictures of random cool things..etc etc.
The great thing about this is there will be NO going off topic, no warnings about going off topic, no being sent on vacation etc etc. This DOES NOT mean you now have the right to disrespect other members. This simply means you are now free to talk about whatever it is you want. Just as if we were all sitting around a camp fire with a beer in each hand...good ol' conversation!
The only thing I can ask of this is remember every member will and has there own opinion about anything that may get mentioned in this thread...PLEASE respect that! Don't be rude to other members, don't start fighting. This thread is our chance to finally go "off topic" without any harm.
This thread can be fun...I noticed alot of people who like to talk...so lets do this.
ps. Just because I created this thread does not mean in any way that I am gonna run it or be in control...oh helll no lol. This thread is for all of us to run and have fun. I suspect we are all mature enough to keep this thread fun, clean, stupid (you know how you get stupid sometimes, but it's funny lol) funny, and also help other people out with anything that gets talked about.
So, what do you guys say? Lets do this or what?
There's a general chat forum, ranging from xda forum chat, to general phone chat, all the way through to off-topic.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=240
Any thread like this will just get moved there, cos that's what it's for.

No need to be rude. This is not an off-topic forum. There is one of those already so please use that. There should be no chit-chat in the dev forum, and general chat IS the place for SGS2 general chat. Anything non-SGS2 related should go elsewhere.
I'll ask a mod to close this redundant thread now as it's in the wrong place.
sahibunlimited,
At this time, we would like to discourage any off-topic chatter in these forums.
Similar threads have been tried, as you mention, but there has been mixed results.
Thanks

[Guideline] Behaviour on XDA

Ok, basically this thread is meant to inform the DOs and DON'Ts on XDA, and also how to do certain things. I started this thread as I have noticed that there has recently been an influx of posts that fail to serve their intended purpose well (e.g. asking for help, bug reporting etc.) Also I hope that this thread will serve to at least provide a general guideline.
Rules
1. No stealing of ROMs.
Ok, this is quite obvious but I thought it would do well to just explain what this is so that some of you don't accidentally steal someone else's ROM. What this means is:
You are not allowed to publish a ROM that you didn't create yourself. What this means is simple -- you are not allowed to publish on the web any ROM that you:
a. have not compiled from sources yourself AND that you haven't added in your own code to
b. have ported from another device WITHOUT permission from the original ROM developer
c. have cobbled together from already-published work (take parts from different ROMs and combine them for a hybrid ROM without adding in your own original code)
The following kind(s) of ROM(s) are exempt from this rule:
a. Stock ROMs with/without modifications
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If you contravene the above rule, it will mean that you have stolen a ROM. If you wish to publish a ROM that breaks the above rule, you have to OBTAIN THE PERMISSION of the developers of the parts (be it scripts, ROMs, mods etc.) that you used in your ROM. Furthermore, in your ROM thread, you must give proper credits to the devs whose work you used and also link back to the original ROM.
If your ROM is simply someone's ROM with cosmetic changes (e.g. different theme and/or a few scripts added in), you must do the above and also post it in the Themes and Apps section as an update.zip that only changes the parts of the ROM as needed.
Lesson is simple: If you want fame on XDA, learn how to compile your own ROM sources and don't simply soft-mod -- usually many people inadvertently steal someone else's ROM this way.
##############################################################
Guidelines:
1. Don't post any non-development related stuff (bug-reports ARE development-related so feel free to post them though) -- it only serves to spam up the thread and hinder development. Posts like "This ROM is great", "this ROM is fast and the best I've used" and "Thanks for this awesome ROM" or, god-forbid, "This ROM sucks" etc are hardly informative, development-supportive, and have no purpose. You might feel good after posting this, but honestly it just serves to annoy others that are trying to locate something in the thread. So don't post this, PLEASE .
2. No ETAs. Please, do not post stuff like "When will the next release come along... can't wait!", "When will you fix XXX bug" and similar questions AT ALL. The ROM will be released when ready, and as above this only spams up the thread. If you are that impatient, I suggest you flash back to stock 2.1, no disappointments and is definitely the most stable .
3. Provide as much detail about your bug as possible. This is by far one of the most common problems. Posts like "my WiFi isn't working", "there's xxx when I yyy, please fix!" are really useless. There !re 1001 possible reasons why your WiFi isn't working, and why blahblahblah happens. To be actually helpful and have a greater chance of having your problem rectified, provide the following:
ROM you are on
Kernel you are using
Paraphernalia you have installed (e.g. Scripts like Supercharger, swap, OC frequency etc)
(If possible) How to replicate your issue
What steps you took to rectify the problem (if any)
Your logcat and dmesg
ON TERMINAL EMULATOR
How to get logcat output saved as a file called logcat.txt on your sdcard:
Code:
su
cat /dev/log/system > /sdcard/logcat.txt
And for dmesg to be saved as a file named dmesg.txt on your sdcard
Code:
su
cat /proc/kmsg > /sdcard/dmesg.txt
or for last dmesg after odd shutdown
Code:
su
cat /proc/last_kmsg > /sdcard/lastdmesg.txt
Flaming and trolling:
1. Refrainkfrom using personal insults as much as possible like "you are dumb", "how stupid can you get", "you are a noob" etc. This is the precursor to an unnecessary flame war. Try and be polite instead like, " you are new, so you may not know this, but blahblahblah". You were a noob once, so try and treat noobs as you would have wanted others to treat you when you were a noob.
2. Don't continue flaming. If someone posted something that flames something, don't flame back. Just report the post and sit back and relax. Continuing the post will just feed the troll and make things worse. You might get punished too.
3. Mind your language. Use English on XDA always, if you can't, include an English translated version of your original text and post it along with your original text. Also, never ever use vulgarities on XDA -- it's a surefire way to get infracted. Don't post any racist/political posts either. XDA is for mobile phone discussion and development, not for expressing your extremist/whatever views about...
_______________________________________________________________
Q&A
1. Use the search tool first. You are just one of over 4 million members on XDA, and it is very likely that your question has been asked and answered already. Search before posting any question to avoid spamming the forums. Remember, you are likely to get an answer faster this way, and this also prevents you from being flamed if your question has been asked before
2. Don't be demanding. People do not have an obligation to do things for you, hence don't demand quick answers, insta-fixes, or a detailed step-by-step guide. It just shows how much you actually bothered to search for answers first and also people will be less likely to answer to you.
3. Post questions in the Q&A forums. Just because the DEV and General forums get more traffic doesn't mean that you should post them there. Again, your question will most likely be answered faster in the Q&A forums and you won't get flamed either.
4. Don't revive old threads and answer them. Recently I have seen users who answer threads 2 days+ old that have been resolved already. Their answer is usually a paraphrase of one of the answer posts above. Then they put in a "Please hit Thanks if I helped". Thanks for answering, but no thanks for spamming and trying to get thanks for free.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Miscellaneous
1. Hit the Thanks button whenever you feel like posting Thanks instead. This reduces the amount of spam on the forums and is a good way of showing your appreciation for the person that helped you. Generally XDAers have a thanks limit of 8 per day, so use them wisely! (Unlimited on Tapatalk/XDA app apparently). At the same time, don't be a Thanks hunter -- someone who actively posts only for Thanks. Please, it is not some sort of "prestige meter", and anyway people can clearly see that you are a thanks hunter and will treat you as such.
2. Use the Report feature. If you see a post that breaks the XDA rules, report the post. Many people that I see just flame the rulebreaker on the thread instead of reporting and allowing a moderator to deal with things. Remember, moderators are not Gods that know whenever some person breaks a rule, so Report posts to help them along.
3. Think, search, then discuss, not the other way round. Only then will a constructive discussion start. Unfortunately, many people just post without thinking, resulting in flaming and general unpleasantness on the forums. XDA is a place where individuals from around the world gather to discuss and develop on mobile phones, so let's keep it that way :highfive::victory:.

Just a Q. There are times when i encounter and have to search to get a answer. More often than not there is a thread that answers part of my Q but which can be considered an old thread. As i may have a few other questions, which would be the best course of action? To ask my Q in that thread (thereby reviving it) or simply start a new thread in, say, Q&A?

It is up to you actually, but I'd say revive the old thread -- one less thread and people will probably see and answer your question. Plus there might be new info, so the old thread gets "updated" in a sense.

android development section is place for placing theme rom start for last few day ago? original android development section is place to real developer... the moderator also change already....
many of them add some self tweak(which actually take some file from other rom), free apk form market , + some theme, supercharges etc combined to become 1 rom.
i respect some of them very work hard for doing theme to make rom with nice look which take long time , but some of them is copy paste which can be done at less then 10 min with replace original apk. since the original android development announce , the development section come out with multiple of this kind of rom....
Hey Spidey!
May I suggest to enforce the rule of strictly no "BEST ROMs" question threads?

"Best rom" or "Best kernel" threads are something I personally take a dim view of, as pointless, those kind of threads also often turn into flamefests when people start defending or heavily promoting their favorite developer!
Also this is as good a place as any to say "Hello" as one of the new moderators for this section

I realy didnt see it.
And dont use that "tone" with me! If some one makes a mistake, u can ask them NICLEY to correct that mistake, u have no right to talk to someone in this "tone".
Go ahead and learn some manners!
I realy didnt see it, i was watching a video and making a post at the same time. I will take this and oportunity and learn from it!
I would do the same if I were u! And I get it that there are a lot of posts like this one, but still u dont have any right to talk to someone like this! Speak to everyone with respect, or someone will eventualy broke youre nose! I know i would if u were standing infront of me and talking with that kind of disrespect!
Take care

I don't think I insulted you in any way, nor did I threaten you in real life.
It seems however that your education is far from finished.
Frankly I highly doubt you would dare to come any close to my nose .
I'd say, grow up and blow off some steam

If you feel that he disrespected you it's better to use the report button instead of fighting back.. I kinda understand his attitude because there's a lot of people posting stuff about note 2 and "not seeing a similar" thread its not an excuse, one rule here its use the search function before post... Also use your common sense... There's about 5 millions users here in xda... The note 2 launches was 4 days ago.. that video its been in YouTube for long now... And you think that after all this time you gonna be the first to bring it?
Cheers

Guy's got a point, Senior Member. No need to be nasty with the tone. We're all on here to help and be helped, right?
agreed , @ friedje : keep a check on that tone ,& i think you need to blow some steam off ....

And I think there is no need to pamper newbies who ignore to read...
Yes we're all out here to help on questions. But hey, there was no question...
There wasn't a cry for help either., Just someone too lazy to read up before posting.
Finally I repeat, my tone isn't insulting in any way, it was meant to get noticed and to wake him up. In which it succeeded extremely well.
If the mods open a 'post all note 2 nonsense in here' thread, then the least you lot can do is comply to it..
Yea, so about this phone...LOL
I'm not sure its worth the switch right now. Just from this video at least. What about you guys?
