[Q] Rooting and HBOOT question - Legend General

Rooting and HBOOT question
Hi,
I have a STock Legend with Vodafone Froyo. Is it possible to downgrade my HBOOT and flash the AlphaRev HBOOT to get r/w on /System?
If yes, could it be possible to root it after that? Or is the only possible root for the Legend a modified ROM?

HBOOT cannot be downgraded. Check out /system overlay

I have seen this guide: h**p://android.modaco.com/content/htc-legend-legend-modaco-com/323201/downgrading-from-froyo-ota/ it shows how to downgrade. Is it possible to flash the alpharev hboot after that downgrade, without (permanent )root? I can't use system overlay, because i have a non rooted stock rom, i have just soft root

Eng Bootloader vs. 86.0.0?

Do i need to be on an Eng Bootloader (85.0.0 or whatever) to flash custom ROMS?
I followed the steps to TRUE root and s=off with no issues...but before i start flashing ROMS i wanted to know if i need to install the Engineering bootloader or can i use the normal bootloader....
is there any real benefit of a Engineering bootloader if i dont need to use it?

The eng. Bootloader will save your ass when you get in a jam. You can flash roms with either though.
Its highly recommended to take the extra steps & install the eng. Bootloader : )
Mytouch 4g-white
Permrooted s-off
Root Method-gfree
CWR-3.0.2.4
Rom-Royalginger v2.1
Kernel-Ckisgen~smartass~v1.2
get the engineering bootloader. nuff said.
Did you check your boot loader after rooting? When i rooted with visionary it change my boot loader to eng. one.

The visionary method basically is just flashing the eng hboot which spoofs your radio as s-off.

The ROOT.SHzip is what contains the Eng Bootloader. The G-Free Method does not have the EB.

Yes, worth getting engineering bootloader. May save your phone more than once. Instructions at Team Royal's site.
Engineering bootloader does two things:
1. Spoofs S-OFF (as kimbernator put it)
2. Let's you use a tool called fastboot from the Android SDK to flash partitions via USB.
As stated before, root.sh script will flash engineering bootloader, whereas gfree will not, but gfree will actually turn S-OFF in the radio (as well as unlock SIM and CID if you want to) so you can flash ROMs with the stock bootloader. I recommend using gfree and then flashing engineering bootloader manually.
If you're flashing it manually, make sure you run an md5sum on that file before you flash it. If it somehow gets corrupted and you flash it, you could brick your phone (hard brick, unrecoverable).

id say hit the irc for a faster response from someone who knows and ask them if you can use newkidds 1 zip to get your old hboot back, but keep in mind newkidd now has like 3 ruu files the old one with the .93 hboot and one with the .98 hboot and one with none I think

flashed .exe
I flashed the .exe so i dont have access to clockwork recovery any more, To flash zip files. Probably a big mistake until a perm root solution is found.

You won't be flashing an exe with the ruu program on your computer, it should just return you to 100% old stock

i just need.
I just need to find one that will revert me back to stock with .93 hboot so i can start over from scratch. The v1 version will not allow this due to being the wrong hboot when it does itks check...

Is it possible to revert after S-OFF with AlpharevX

Hi all,
I was wondering if it is possible to revert hboot to s-on after s-off with alpharevx beta, will update with 2.2.1 ruu overwrite alpharevx hboot???
I did update with ruu, but almost nothing happened after completion, hboot is still same s-off, only recovery was original... removed cwm
strange...
anyone help...
It wont remove the patched HBoot because it is v6.x, and the RUU's is v1.x. It's not yet possible to revert, although the devs had stated they will release a special downgrader which will restore the original HBoot, but, its not released yet.
So, do you think that, after downgrade and all that guru stuff, and after installing RUU, we will get wildfire in exact same state before installing alpharevx???
Thank you for quick reply
Ofcourse, since after downgrading, it will be the Stock HTC Hboot. And, as you already found out, RUU's will remove the Custom Recovery, and the Superuser Binary, which gives root, so in all, giving a stock out of the box phone.
Oki, so now waiting for downgrader )) thanks again

[Q] Unrooted still S-OFF

I have unrooted my phone but it still reads S-OFF. How can I change this to be S-ON?
How did you root? What hboot version do you have? Why are you unrooting? If you give more information, you're more likely to get answers.
If you rooted with unrevoked, you need to flash the s-on tool. You'll need to reflash your recovery. You may need to downgrade your radio for the s-on zip to take. You may need Amon Ra to do this. Once you've downgraded/s-on, flash the RUU again to get rid of your recovery.
If you rooted with revolutionary, there are several threads about unrooting it. Check those.
If you're taking its in for repair, you may not need to be s-on. I'd leave mine s-off, but that choice is yours.

HELP S-OFF but no ROOT!

i have S-off but i have no root or recovery! please someone help! i need to get this phone back to stock!
Run PD15IMG.zip. It will flash the stock recovery and set everything back to stock. You should be good to send your phone back after that.
When I had that problem flashing the pd15.img did not turn S-on.
If your still on 2.2.1 you need to temp root with visionary and run gfree to turn S back on.
If your on gingerbread (2.3) you'll have to downgrade back to 2.2.1 before you can run gfree.
After turning S-on reflash a stock pd15.img and you'll be back to stock.
For more info read the rooting guide in the sticky section. I think its the one by grankin01. Its the one that says check this out even if your rooted.

He needs to use grankin01's guide to get S-ON once he get back to froyo and then reflash froyo PD15IMG to restore everything back to stock.
Because he used gfree to acquire S-OFF, just flashing the PD15IMG.zip won't turn the security flag on. It does for root.sh, but not gfree.

I thought I remembered that the guide said how you could use gfree to turn S-on as well.

the guide says it works for pre OTA update. does that mean i dont have to go back to 2.2.1?

I'm confused...gcashiel, you are rooted, CWM recovery, S-Off right? But all of this is on 2.3.4 STOCK T-mobile OTA ROM, correcT?

yes correct. i have the stock rom with root privileges.
i am trying to get EVERYTHING back to stock, hboot ( i have the hboot 0.85.2007), Security back to on, and the original 2.3.4 rom
I'll "translate":
There is no T-Mobile "stock" 2.3.4 with root. It's a pre-rooted 2.3.4, that you flashed from CWM recovery. The stock is not rootable, and should have been downgraded at some point to achieve S-OFF.
In any case, if S-OFF was achieved through gfree, you need to rerun gfree to return to S-ON. Judging by this thread, it's going to be way over your head.
So, my suggestion:
1) Go to the downgrading thread (search, don't ask), run "misc_partition" command on your current ROM.
2) Copy PD15IMG.ZIP of 2.3.4 to SD card and proceed with returning to stock. You'll most likely stay S-OFF, but otherwise have a completely stock ROM.
If it sounds too complicated - wait for someone to explain it better, or start reading to understand, what to do. Everything you need is in the guides, you just need to understand what things do and how to use it for your case.

okay i think i understand but what if i do the PD15IMG with the stock rom to get it unrooted will that be enough to send it back?
People on the forum reported that it was enough. I have no first-hand experience.
okay then but will it work with the PD15IMG that has the GB update on it?
can you help with this step please?
5. Now run the "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" and it should show the output:
xxxx bytes in
xxxxbytes out
xxxxxxxxxx copied in blah blah blah

?????
What do you not get? Locate the part7backup files on your sd card and add the path to the command sample. If you don't have them, follow this guide.
