Since upgrading I have never again managed to regain the stability I had initially with Stock O2 1.6. Steve's roms improved performance but suffered increased instability. Now I'm on Froyo 318 it's a fair compromise between performance & stability, but I still don't feel right about the one or two automatic reboots I'm experiencing daily, notably when I'm using the browser for a fairly long time. I'll be browsing for about an hour or more, then the touch control lights flash and the device reboots by itself. I have no task manager or setcpu installed and no performance fix flashed - just 318 rooted with a few apps from the market.
Do I have to accept the reboots as a streak limitation or characteristic of Android 2.2 similar to windows mobile (which initially edged me towards android) ?
Or do I have a faulty device (overheating perhaps) ?
Anybody else experiencing this?
I have this problem also, and I noticed a few times that my phone was just off in my pocket, a few times I noticed it stuck at the dell logo and had to pull the battery and reboot it. I love this phone and all bit the sang thing has little thing that really tick me off

It's issues like this that makes me not want to do the manual upgrade from the locked 1.6. I had talked myself into maybe doing it today, but now I'm going to hold off and wait a little longer for the official update after reading about people having issues like this.

I don't blame you for taking that standpoint, but it looks like there's only 2 of us that have this problem
Could just be we are of the unlucky ones with defective units, whereas you may have no issues at all.
i have this ussue as well.as others do....
mine restarts after unpluging from charger after overnight session... but,to tell you the truth,it is pretty random sh..t so i do not know what to blame-i do not use fixes-just stock 318.
i read that it is not rom related which could suggest h/w issue of the specific sample.
i dont know - one restart every 2 days is not big issue for me so i will wait after next dell upgrade with my fingers crossed.
aaaah, one more thing - some guys posted that loose battery cover was causing their reboots - they solved the problem by placing something (paper?) between battery and the cover in the battery corners. maybe you give it a go too?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Hey i tried the battery cover solution, it did improve on the number of reboots i was experiencing per day, went down from about 7 a day to 1 maybe 2, but unfortunatly didnt solve the problem completely
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Oh also btw use something slightly thicker than paper (i used a train ticket)
the idea being that the card pushes down the battery so that there arent any loose contacts, hope that helps
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Updated to 318........I guess 5 days ago. Not one restart here. I'm normally the one that always get's issues so I'm thankful I dodged the bullet on this one if it's really that common.
I can't see the battery cover being the culprit in my case, it fits nice and snugly. Thanks for the suggestion though
Just 3 of us with the sporadic reboots?
I'm considering digging out my HD2 from retirement again (I abandoned it due to instability in windows 6.5 and android on sd at the time), but looks like people say Winmobile 7 on HD2 is very stable. If only HD2 had the screen size of this Streak...
seems that others are having the same problem, just that you didnt look hard enough
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914333
As a reminder... Be sure to completely wipe previous versions of your Rom on your streak before doing the QDL. If your streak aint completely clear, traces of the old rom will contaminate the QDL version and you will have glitches and hang ups.
Your reboots are caused because there is a instability problem in the Rom on your phone conflicting within itself causing the unit to shut down crashing the CPU. You need to do a Clean install.

Hey guys just wanted to get everyone's feedback on the streak. After having it for a full week now it seems like the home screens are laggy now. Jumping from apps to apps can be slow too. Can I wxpect 2.1 or the updated 2.2 to be this laggy again?
Is the flashed 2.2 laggy at all? I dont want to flash a rom yet since rumor it might come by the 15th. I hope and pray.. I dont have too many apps but this lag is killing me softly. Had iphone 4 before and obviously that will always be a smooth UI then had my captivate with flashed rom on 2.2 and that was pretty responsive...
Anything else I can do on 1.6 to help?

I run an app called system panel.. And I run it when my 1.6 gets laggy. You can controle the working processes with it and stop the ones who take up to much memory or processing power.

My friend had the same strange issue and I believe it was caused by some app he downloaded. All we did to fix this was just reflash to 1.1.1 (now it would be also wise to flash to widely known Dj Steve's 1.2) It's easy and your Streak will work WAY faster.
personally, the 1.6 is a smidgeon laggy, but the 2.x versions are not.
i'd just be patient for 3-4 weeks and wait till the official 2.2 comes out.
Flashing to a XDA-ROM is tricky and troublesome and usually recommended to hardcore gizmo fiddlers.
I can't speak for everybody, but for all those I know owning a Dell Streak have the same problem as you do. We all hope the official Froyo will fix the problem, but it kind of late. I am about 6 months away from my upgrade date. This will be my last Dell. Hope some other will make phone with this size of screen.
When mine gets that way I power it off and back on. This is because I don't know where to find a "reset" app like I had with my Windoze mobile phone. Does one exist for Android 1.6?
I currently use an app called "Fast Reboot" off the market, and it literally just shuts most of the running processes down and boots everything up again. It takes a couple of seconds but it's a hell of a lot quicker than actually rebooting the phone, only for it to take 5-10 mins to start up again. I've not had any major problems using this app but it does have an affect on some widgets like the Battery Smart (android) widget which freezes and no longer shows you how much battery you've got left, but removing and adding it again works fine. Though every so often, I still like to do a proper reboot just in case.
Just taking an assessment here of the number of people going back to 2.1 and waiting out the OTA from Sprint.
I am not... I Repeat NOT looking to start a thread over whether or not it's worth it or a good idea. I am not looking to know what problems you are having or solutions you have found. There are a million threads to go over these issues.
Just taking a count here. Perhaps to help me in deciding whether or not its worth it to go through reinstalling all those apps and whatnot based on what the masses seem to be thinking.
OK if you guys want to use this as yet another repository for conversations on the pros and cons and problems you are having when you switch back please feel free...
I already have. For me, di18 runs circles around froyo. I don't think this is the final froyo. It's too goddamn slow and buggy. If it is, then this is the most sorry ass excuse for a final release from samsung/sprint. I'd give it the golden turd award.
P.S. I'm running stock rooted only.
Even if its "buggy" and/or a bit "laggy", froyo let's me do what I want on my phone..so I could bare with it as I have been for like 2 months aready

No. I've been on the stock rom since I got an epic at the end of October, and this leak is by far the best rom I've used. I have absolutely no problems with this rom whatsoever. The one minor quirk is the screen lag when I open and close my keyboard, the home screen take a second to populate the icons and stuff. Other than that, I really don't have any major problems with this release at all.
DK28 feels like somehow I flashed Windows Mobile 6.5 on my phone. Launcher Pro is buggy and crashes at least several times per day. The phone freezes all the time and i have to mash the home key a hundred times to correct it, and then its vibrating for like 20 seconds registering the previous 100 hits of the home key. The browser is checkerboarding and WTF did my bookmarks go in the browser? Seriously, when you are in the browser, how do you access your bookmarks? They are no where to be found. Random apps are having anywhere from minor to major problems, most of which I fix manually through root explorer and correcting permissions. I did flash it correctly, so its not an issue with that. That said, its a PITA to flash back to DI18 and ive been putting it off. Gonna wait until I am mid throw chucking my phone against a wall, and then I will stop myself and flash back to DI18 that evening.
I guess I'm lucky with DK28. My phone has no ill effects.

Same here. I'm keeping 2.2. It runs faster, smoother, and battery last longer. I have had no app conflicts. I'm came from unrooted stock epic, and just downloaded file from google the day it came out to my phone. Used my phone to change the name of the file, and used stock recovery to update. No probs what so ever.

As a former Windows Mobile 6.5 user, I would like you to know that even WM6.5 on a TP2 is much more enjoyable to use than DK28.
That having been said, I went from DK28 back to Epic Experience.
Well a couple of things...
1) I think its funny that this has been viewed (at this point) 111 times, but only 17 people were willing to click yes no or considering it. I guess I should have included an option for those people who never flashed the update to begin with.
2) I updated on the day it was released as well. I had to do the flash back to get the GPS working again, but as of now the only real issue I have appears to be the accelerometer rotation lag.
@JSarella and @muyoso: I also was Stock ROM and rooted before the update and just used the update.zip method. However, I am not sure if that makes a difference with regard to the results of flashing to DK28.
@mxcoldhit: The battery life is amazing. I don't even have to use JuiceDefender, I can keep my screen at a normal brightness, have 2 email accounts pushing all day long, listen to an hour of music, make a couple of calls, play some games/do some light browsing, and still have battery to spare... just incredible to me the difference from 2.1 where I could hardly go a few hours of the day and do anything on the phone (without using JD).
I just felt like my phone was a bit snappier on eclair, and have been considering how much that snappiness is worth to me. I have backed up with CWM, so its not such a hassle, but I do love the battery life, flash support, and general feel of Froyo and know I would miss it as I wait at least 3 weeks for a final release. Also, who knows when an RC2 will be released and how much more careful Sprint will be as they actually caught wind of this one and all the excitement around it... I partially wonder if they did it as a teaser just to get a sense of how the community is feeling or to throw us off the scent of the gingerbread rumor... WHO KNOWS!!! Anywho, thanks to everyone who has responded, and I will keep checking in from time to time to see how it looks and what people are choosing to do based on their own personal experiences with DK28.
Already went back, didn't waste any time.
DK28 has been a great experience for me! Faster, smoother, more responsive than DI18 (or earlier) ever was! Dunno what some of you have done to your phones but DK28 has been running circles around the previous Eclair builds for the Epic 4G. My phone has only been on stock and never rooted. Also did a factory reset prior to DK28 so maybe that's why it has been such an utter joy for me.
Not going back and I'd be an idiot to do so!
I'm staying. I haven't had any problems and this thing runs so smooth now. This probably isn't final, but its close.

I would suggest that once flashed do a wipe, that cleared out most of the bugs. Frustrating downloading apps again but worth it.

After this morning I am going to have to go with likely to go back. Over time I am finding more and more bugs with DK28. This morning I was driving to work, I keep my phone linked to my car with bluetooth for slacker radio. Twice it loses it's connection and I was like what the hell.... so I look at my phone and it says 2 missed calls which should have gone through the bluetooth but instead just killed the data connection. Then 5 minutes later my whole notification bar goes green. Not a normal green, a look like a video card crashing green /w lines through it.
I just keep seeming to find random bugs here and there and it is getting a bit annoying. I may just wait it out until Samsung figures this whole froyo thing out.

LOL! I guess I'm not the only one but I wouldn't go as far to say it is as bad as WinMo 6.5 even though certain things do remind me of my Touch Pro 2. I have realized that this isn't Froyo. It's FRUITCAKE!
I already went back - came from rooted stock, went back unrooted so OTA will work.
My battery SUCKED - I am used to getting a normal day's use with a lot left, I was having to plug in mid afternoon/dinner time. Just like before the 9/30 update and still doing all the tricks to keep battery down, ie airplane toggle, kill all Media, check Wifi status, etc. I HATE to plug in my phone for what I consider normal usage, not high tech, downloading, playing games. I almost returned it in Sept for this, will not go there again.
And GPS did NOT work, no has codes, nothing. I am going on vacation and really need GPS, so that was the final straw.
Liked - phone did seems snappier and faster. changing dock station icons
pics and some programs came up faster
Disliked - email was really slow messaging was different, screens bright was
ok but got popups (might be me and settings)
Didn't have calibration/rotation problems, didn't check camera, no dropped calls
Just lost too much and didn't gain enough to continue. I'm glad those above did well, it could depend on how you use it as well as how it was loaded, no idea, but battery for me was nightmare and unacceptable.
No, not going back unless I have to to get the next update. Battery life is significantly improved and everything is as snappy as it was before, and my gps is working even if it comes on while 4g is connected. No crashes yet and I have been running it since about 5 minutes after the link to the update.zip was posted.
And to access bookmarks in the browser you have to press the button next to the addres bar when a page is not loading. I hope they put it back into the bottom menu though.
Edit:
I haven't made up my mind yet. Many of the froyo roms seem to have minor issues here and there, but are otherwise usable.
When playing Texas Holdem mainly, dowloading, multi tasking, or gamaing it just flashes all three lights and reboots. I do not know if its my 32 gb sd card but I have tried normal 16 gb sd stock and does the same thing. Its really weird because sometimes it seams like it will be trucking right along for a little bit and then BAM reboot. I have read some things like voltage problems, overheating, and possible kernel issues ... All I know is that when I hit 450 million on Texas Holdem I really do not want a random reboot erasing my chip count.
I am currently running 15609 build 351 with latest non beta clockword recovery ... Was originally bought from dell under locked AT&T 1.6 ... I used qdl tool to convert everything automatically to 2.2 then do dell factory reset to 2.2.2 then flash clockword recovery and superuser ...
When doing normal everyday tasks it never reboots even by itself. Like right now not a problem. But if I get into the phone and use it like it should be its going to reboot sooner or later.

Do you have a lot of other stuff loaded in background/on startup? It sounds like you're running out of ram and the streak's panicing
I have 5 full tabs of applications which 4x6 per page would be total of 120 apps ... I have some system monitor programs which only show a hand full of apps running in the background? Is that way to many apps to have on this phone?

I had a similar issue.
My 1st streak was doing this, no matter what rom I was running (seemed to be triggered by wifi events) I was researching the issue and found there have been a few streaks that have either had reboot issues caused by battery cover problems & others that may be "just plain defective". I suspect mine was in the "Just plain defective" group. I had it replaced and no further issues (I am really careful about the battery cover just to be safe) I was less than 3 weeks after purchase so I had Best Buy replace it on the spot. since it has known issues they did not have a problem replacing it.
Cheers
BR
911! I had a random streak lying around so I copied everything over and sure enough it must have been a defective streak! I have over a million in Texas Holdem and we are going strong with not one random boot with the exact same set up ... Will be sending that other streak back per warranty ... I am loving this! Thanks for everyones help ...

I have an issue where games and apps quit on their own when it gets too crazy.
if you go into data/tombstones you will find crash logs, read through those and you can see whats causing the issue.
I have been using Android since cupcake and it's going to end with my Nexus One. Reasons:
These are problems I've had with various roms, most stock roms, some MIUI:
- The Camera, no matter which ROMS I get when I try and take a picture it reboots the phone after freezing. I cannot use my 5MP camera at all because of this.
- After leaving the phone charging for awhile then going back to it when I push one spot on the screen it thinks I've pushed a completely different spot. I require a full reboot to fix this.
- My keyboard, stock keyboard, sometimes turns all white. You then cannot see what you're typing and there's just this big white bar.
- To fix the above I got Better Keyboard. It force closes often, and sometimes when I try to type with it what I'm typing doesn't get inserted into the selected input box.
- I got five hours of STANDBY (not using phone at all) battery life on Gingerbread. I had to downgrade back to froyo to get normal battery life back.
- After ten seconds or so if you don't use your screen it's supposed to DIM. Regardless of whether or not I'm using my phone it still dims after ten seconds.
So as far as Android goes come October when my three year Bell contract expires I'll be selecting an iPhone. I am done with Android problems of all kinds. That's not to say there's not a lot of things I like about Android but I can't just keep on going with it whilst experiencing these annoying problems, when I've never experienced any problems of any sort on my jailbroken iPad.
Did you ever try using your warranty? Really sounds like you had a dodgy handset.
Sounds like your phone is a lemon. I experience none of that....don't think anything you mentioned is a problem of android itself, you just got unlucky with your phone

Again, this sounds like either something wrong with your rom or a hardware issue. I have never seen this issue.
Yeah, you're an idiot. Sorry, but you're blaming problems that either you have created or hardware problems on Android, the operating system.
But go ahead and leave Android. It sounds like you're not really technology capable of much more than an iPhone (and really, this is probably going to be pushing your technological limits it seems), so that is probably what you should stick to.
I won't be as harsh as the others
The only problem you mentioned that is N1 related is the screen, rest are probably rom related. If your flahsing all those roms you already know they are not guaranteed to work on all phones.
If you want to try another phone, try the new Sensation or equivalent. Android is still much better than Apple. IMHO. That said, my son and his wife have been Apple users for 20 years or as long as I can remember. They have used nothing else. So, I think the iphone is a good phone, just not for everyone. As android is not for everyone. I once thought Blackberry was unbeatable, I was wrong bigtime. When I first started using them, they may have been. But, not any more.
You are probably like me and get an itch to try something different. I am currently running RCADSmix Sense rom with a number of issues. But, I like it so much, I will put up with the issues. Probably means my next phone will be the Sensation or it's future quadcore brother.
Enjoy whatever you get, I still remember when a six transistor am radio was an upgrade. These are great tech times--

Im just guessing here but your in Canada with bell? bell doesn't offer the nexus one. how are you on a contract? Ill also agree with everyone else your problems are not android related. Sounds like a hardware issue. Good luck with the iPhone my brother loves his. I like the design but that's it.
Just flashed cyanogen latest version. New problems:
1. Sometimes when turning on the phone the lock screen doesn't show up, just my background displays and nothing else. Reboot required by pulling battery out in order to fix.
2. Display menus don't show up sometimes.
3. Already experienced this one, but the keyboard is yet again going completely white.
Anyone want to point me towards an actual working rom without any problems or does such a thing exist

Because not all of these problems are with the hardware and you, or myself are incapable of diagnosing them without more extensive investigation to the handset.
Roms work fine. Your phone doesn't
Most people have no or little problems with these roms
Most if not all issues are improper flashing or incomplete wipes--like not wiping system and data and caches multiple times
Check md5s
Or, not properly partitioning sdcard
If still issues then the phone has too many bad blocks for the rom and kernal
Ken
After reading your first post again, I think it is your phone and not common issues. I have never had a bad camera unless specifically noted on the OP page of an alpha type rom.
I can tell you how I do my sdcard and prepare for a new rom if you like. If my procedure doesn't work you will never have any better luck flashing with that particular phone.
Sorry
Ken
I'm with Telus on my N1 and i've never ever seen any of the problems you mentioned. I've also flashed alot of different roms/kernels/apps/etc and nothing like you had mentioned.
I did however have an issue that resembles your camera issue. Mine was the GPS causing my phone to reboot every time i used it. I didn't really notice it much until i started using it for GPS nav and such. Tried flashing different roms, going back to stock and issue still came up. Called HTC and sent my phone back under warranty. They told me they replaced the board and i have not seen the problem ever since.
I strongly recommend giving HTC a call and see if you can send your phone in for repairs.
That's what iPhone is for. To protect incompetents like yourself from themselves.
You should be nowhere near a rooted phone.
I have the exact same camera issue. The reason is a date of my beloved Nexus and my washing mashine. So it might be a hardware problem for you as well. Sometimes with some roms the camera seems to work 1 out of 10 times.
Bluetooth, fm radio died as well but everthing else is just fine. Some roms seem to check/use camera, radio or bluetooth during a reboot. Then the rom won't start at all or it makes random problems.
This phone is a beast. 20 minutes in the washing mashine at 60°C couldn't really destroy it. Even between screen and digitizer there was water and I had to disamble the phone three times and dry the parts for one week in a rice bowl to get it to work again.

Got this also, annoying but I'm quite sure it goes along with flashes. Pretty sure it will be normal on stock rom.
Actually mate I think you should upgrade your radio...
I used to have this issue with the camera before, get the latest radio and ur camera issue will be solved.
and the battery as well i guess
as for the keyboard and all the other problems just go to rom manager and flash cm 7.1 rc1 from there, make sure you wipe cache, and dalvik cache
it should solve ur issues
Android is a more technical platform, it is by default that the user likes going technical before getting an android
Flashed the new gingerstreak 2.4 ROM a couple of days ago. And what can I say, it just works.
Apart from a screen lock issue (just goes black and locks up - removal of battery required. Suspect it's a Widgetlocker issue cos it doesn't do it when I revert to stock lock screen) and a charging issue (says that my charger is faulty if I use a 3m USB extension lead, ok if I dispense with the extension lead)
As far as I can tell. Tethering, bluetooth, wifi all work properly. (not tried VPN - don't need it, don't know how to set it up)
GPS, however is greatly improved. Now works in my lounge ( ground floor, reinforced concrete ceilings) Managed to navigate from my lounge to the toilet - journey time 6 secs. Average speed 3mph if you really wanted to know (I know how you guys love detail...)
I especially like the little text selection tab on text entry. Makes editing a breeze...
As for the much vaunted battery life. TBH I've not had enough time to evaluate. But when I can stop f****ing around with it, and revert to normal day to day operation. I'll have a clearer idea, and will post again, along with any other likes/dislikes/bugs that I find...
Incidentally, I backed up my entire SD card. Wiped it. And without any kind of back up, carried out the flashing procedure as detailed in untold places on these forums. Then manually re-installed all 130 odd apps.
Not convinced that nandroid or other backups work that well. I bit of a pain, but I think it's worth it.
I love this phone, and right now I think it's as good as anything out there ('cept maybe the SII. or the Sensation xe) And I'm not at all sorry that I upgraded to this. Can't be long before it loses it's beta status, surely..?

I love it ive been using it now for 4 days and never had a lock up @ all it is 1000xs faster
I switched to 2.4 from Fards 2.3 and the biggest difference seems to be that I longer get random slow downs and on 2.3 I would very rarely get a reboot a when doing heavy gaming and that its no longer the case. 2.4 feels like a perfect and stable ROM to me with no issues whatsoever as of right

2.4 is pretty much close to a RC.

Upgraded from 2.3.3B2 and its been smooth sailing. I got the portrait lock version. Wish someone made a version with:
Portrait lock
Internationalization
Back Cover sensor disable
Google Talk from 2.3.4 (with video chat)
am getting to greedy aren't I?
Simply amazing I feel its the most stable Tom for the streak to date. Battery however still isn't great but, just like a car, if you buy a fast one youre not expecting good gas mileage. Also still needs the clocksync app.

Took the plunge myself this evening and it's mostly going well; EXTREMELY fast compared to 315!
Only bug I've found so far (and it's a biggie!) is that if I enable wi-fi, then I get an infinite crash-boot-loop. unfortunately, when I pull the battery and restart to get out of this loop, wi-fi is still enabled to the bug happens again! Took me a few tries to get in to the settings and disable wi-fi before it crashed again...
Since I disabled wi-fi it's been running like a dream!

I don't have any wifi issues besides the occasional dropped connection. Never have it cause a reboot.

Kinda wanted to throw my Streak in the trash. But after upgrading to GingerStreak 2.4 from StreakDroid 1.9, I love the device more than ever. So much smoother, faster and more reliable than before. I'm amazed really.
Haven't encountered any bugs yet. SuperUser problem was a minor blip.
IMHO anyone who says Gingerbread isn't much of an improvement over Froyo must be on crack (or just ignorant).

From what I've seen/read, it appears to be caused by the Wi-Fi sleep policy. The crash only seems to happen if you set the Wi-Fi to never sleep. Unfortunately, for me this is the only valid use of the Wi-Fi connection... what's the point if every time you turn the device on you have to reconnect to the network?
Anyway, that's the only real issue I've found so far. That and for some reason the "dimmed" buttons on widgetsoid switches are so dim they're invisible now... were fine in Froyo but I can't find a way to change it. Not really a GS issue though, just wanted to gripe

Add a background to widgetsoid. The reconnecting is no big deal for me.

One simple Question: Do i have to reflash amss coming from SD2.3? Or is the amss for this build the same as for the build before?
Btw.: Good work! Thanks to all the guys that contributed!
I'm using GingerStreak 2.4
But sometimes my streak boot couples of times before start up.
anyone knows why it happens?

One thing I've noticed is that Gingerstreak doesn't have the funky CRT-style sleep animation when pressing the power button :-(
Also strangely the signal, Wi-Fi and cellular data indicators keep randomly changing between white and green...
otherwise it's great! ;-)
Solved my locking up. Set wifi to always on, instead of off with screen, widgetlocker works just fine.....

Holy cow! GS 2.4 is flawless so far! Have yet to notice a single glitch. Smoothest ROM yet for streak. Animations don't hang at all, like they invariably did with ANY version of FroYo.
Wow!

easy response to that is ALWAYS follow instructions. If it says to install a baseband, it's propably for a good reason so best to do it!
Flash the dsp file with fastboot.
Is this in beta still? I do not see the usual introduction and download links.
