Ever since it updated to DL09 my GPS times went from 15 seconds max with DJ05 to nearly a minute with DL09.
I've flashes that radio, full iron package, and tried 3 different ROMS and nothing helped.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm ready to go back to DJ05 if this can't be fixed.

Im trying mine right now and I have been waiting going on two minutes now.. outside sitting in a car. I'm thinking about going back to DJ05 where it was much faster.
Mine slowed down by at LEAST 45sec on lock time after going to DL09 as well
PS. Also saw no improvement in Battery life or anything else for that matter over DJ05
My gps never locked within half a mile of me on dj05 im now dl09 and it will lock with a wifi and thats it. Im dying to get this solved. Im ready to get rid of the phone because of it.

So I decided to test the GPS lock times on DI01, DJ05, and DL09 with the stock Verizon/Samsung ROM/kernel just to make sure it wasn't ill effects of rooted roms or anything like that.
DI01 - 74 seconds
DJ05 - 13 seconds
DL09 - 69 seconds
I used GPS Status & Toolbox to test the GPS and track lock times. Each time I odin'd to another build I did a data/cache wipe and went through the same set-up process while just downloading the GPS Status & Toolbox application from the Market.
I don't understand why the newest update is giving me worse performance but honestly it's kinda not surprising considering it came from Samsung/Verizon.
Your little test is fine and dandy but it doesnt solve the problem. Some of us never get a lock on any version. I dont think the versions are the problem. I think these phones a faulty gps sensors.
Using dl09 with stupid fast, blackish storm, and every mod I like.
I'm using the stock DL09 update and the last time I connected to gps with google maps it took 15 seconds max. I just had to remember to turn on the google gps services option.
Ive got everything turned on. The closest ive ever got was within 1/2 mile or so
Using dl09 with stupid fast, blackish storm, and every mod I like.
I find that I use Google Services that my accuracy goes down that drain.
My best luck had been with DJ05, and having Standalone GPS and VZW Location Services (aGPS).
PS try using GPS Status and Toolbox.

My experience with dl09 has been totally opposite. With di01, I would get 3-5 min. lock times with only 2/3 of available satellites fixed. Since loading Adrynalyne's dl09 modem, rom & kernel, I get >10 sec. lock times on all satellites available. It finds me in my house in the woods of northern MI with > 10 ft. of error.

My setup: non-rooted, no mods, completely stock.
I got impatient, and used Odin to update to JI6. That all went OK, but my GPS does not seem to be any better. Now granted, I've only had JI6 for about an hour, and the only place I've really tested the GPS is my deck, but I only saw 1-2 satellites when I was out there using GPS Status.
This brings me to my next issue. The GPS Status app has locked up my phone every time I've used it so far, requiring me to pull the battery.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Nobody else is having this problem?

gps status has locked my phone up before also. Use gps test.
I didn't care much for the leaked ji6 update either. Seemed like it killed my battery. I used odin to flash back to the original rom and then went back to ji2. It's worked the best for me.

I believe he is talking about the official OTA update. He just used Odin to flash it.
What does your phone say under *#32144789650#?
No, GPS Status doesn't lock up my phone. Make sure it's operating under Standalone Mode through this menu, delete GPS data and wait for your first fix. The only time my phone ever locked up on any JIx version was when I was in MS-Based mode. I suggest that you do a reset or wipe because that's not normal behavior. I'm using GPS Status right now and it's not causing me any trouble.
Word Of Warning this Modem is crap! Went from JL5 Modem getting 5.2mg download speed to 1.2mg download speed when using this KA5 Modem. And GPS took like 5mins to lock on.was only taking like 10 secs on the JL5 modem. Was also Timing out all the time! so I switched Back!!! Stay Far away!!! I wish I knew the reason behind it (other than possibly placebo effect), but I've seen this same type of reporting for basically all the leaked modems. Some say it's crap, others say it's the best yet. Just try out the newest release and make your own decission. ALso, my advice is to REALLY try it out for awhile, not run one speedtest where you're sitting then flash back because it's 5% slower.
F.Y.I. I'm not taking a shot at the OP, I realize his/her claims of speed differences are significant and KA5 may very well be a terrible modem for him/her.

Im starting think it may depend on your geographic location also. JL5 worked great for me, and i flashed KA5 today, and it seems to be great also. i've noticed my battery might be falling a little faster with KA, but its a little less buggy when switching networks and what not. Progress in one way or another.
Ill prolly try it again with Nero 5.

Not scientific but:

KA5 download speeds:
5526
5309
5132
5309
5653
KA5 average: 5385.8
I just flashed it so Im not sure an batt life. Reconditioning now.
I also had a big drop with KA5.
KA5 speetest = 1.3mbs
JL5 speetest = 3.5mbs
I also noticed the random signal drops with the KA5 modem. Back to JL5 for me. It is just not a stable modem.
Jl5 gave me 2 bars and I live like 8 blocks away from a t mobile tower, now with ka5 always full bar!
I flashed nero 5, which includes KA5 and its literally doubles my speeds, download from 1 to 2 to 2 to 4. If its good enough for team whiskey its plenty good for me
Maybe this is one of the reasons we don't have official 2.2. The lack of constant results

I don't know.. but ka5 is working fine for me.. i installed the stock one with no root or cwm... just stock.. it's working fine so far. The GPS took a while to get a lock then after installing the gpsrestore, now it gets a lock fast.. my settings from j16 was all intact, even the apps that normally won't show up in the market with the leaked froyo rom are there, swiftkey, amtalee, etc. I didn't do a factory reset, just flashed through odin without a pit file...
loving it..
Or maybe the reason why the apps are in the market because this is the newest leak and the apps are available..?? the best part is, the marketplace hasn't been updated yet to the latest version, i hate the new market.. lol..oh and i can use swiftkey, the android keyboard is still not available though..
edit.. amtalee is not available in market.. ughh but still in my phone from not doing a factory reset

Hi all. I apologize for starting new thread. I am travelling right now and have NO access to a computer other than my epic. I am totally dependent upon my epic's gps and nav and the tapatalk search is not helping.
I upgraded to stock eg22 and then odined cwm and su to get root. Other than that, I am totally stock
The gps is freezing constantly when in navigation. It's losing signal and totally locking the driver so that the indicator up top says thereis a lock but there isn't.
Nothing gets rid of the frozen icon other than reboot. I tried gps on/off from quick menu, airplane mode, ending all tasks, turning off using deep setup menus....gps is useless until reboot.
It only seems to freeze during nav mode whereas regular maps seems ok...
Please help to point me towards a fix or workaround.
Thanks all!

This is a known bug with the leaks. I believe it is caused by the battery getting too hot. Try running it without the charger on and see if it goes further without a lockup. Best bet is to restore a froyo ROM but you will still be stuck with the EG22 modem until you get to a computer. I assume you have the EG22 modem already which is the best for GPS on EG22 leaks.
There is also a program in the market called GPS Aids (free) which some people have said worked for them. I still believe it is heat though.

You are correct that I am on eg22 modem. I didn't even think it could be battery issue from overheating. I can try leaving keyboard open too. That used to help with heat running wmwifi back in my wm days.
I'd rather try that before going back to ec05 rom, although would use flashable ec05 rom or modem if I have too as I'm here for another 6 days and need gps as the roads have no signs for 5-10 mile clips...

Hehe...I tried another approach which you may have in your files somewhere, a ROM that also installs the EC05 modem regardless of what modem you are on. Bonsai had ROMs that update the modem but only checked for earlier modems before swapping, not later versions.
Good luck Josh. Another trick you can use is to use the GPS for clips at a time. If there is a 20 mile run before an exit, leave it off until you get near the exit. Then start it again from there.
Let me know if you agree about the heat problem, it is a theory I am working on.

Before I went on vacation last week, I flashed back to Bonsai 4.1.3 because I knew I would need my GPS for the trip. However, I forgot to flash the EC05 modem so I was still running the EG22 modem all week. During the trip my GPS would loose signal during Navigation about every hour or two, but unlike the EG22 ROMs, it would regain signal within 20-30 seconds and recover without a reboot. I've since switched back to the EC05 modem and have yet to lose GPS signal once. Just thought I would share this in case it provides any insight.

This sounds similar to the EC05 GPS crash bug. In the last EG22 GPS thread I asked folks to record a logcat so I could very if this is the problem, but nobody took up that offer.

Do you know if Bonsai 4.1.3 contains my GPS crash fix? I don't have a changelog handy.
Folks, if the EG22 GPS problem is similar to as EC05, I'm willing to fix it. But I don't/can't run leaked ROMs and am unable to test it myself. Anyone feel like grabbing that logcat?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have your GPS crash fix, but I've never had any issue with GPS on 4.1.3, or any EC05 ROM for that matter. I use Navigation pretty extensively at one of my jobs, and it's always been reliable.
I can't compare the EG22 issue to the EC05 issue because I've never experienced one on EC05. With EG22, the GPS crashes after a period of Navigation and requires a reboot of the phone to fix it. My experience on vacation was similar, except that the GPS would recover after 20 or 30 seconds(no reboot required). This was running a EC05 ROM (bonsai 4.1.3) with the EG22 modem. Once I replaced the EG22 modem with the EC05, I was unable to replicate the issue.

I believe the EG22 issue to be different and possibly heat related. With these leaks we have had random reboots, batteries refusing to charge due to temperature and the gps freezing after an hour or so. With EC05 I had the issue where it would not lock from the start without a reboot but EG22 (and the other modems) just stop at some point and mostly require a reboot to get going again.

Certain of that? I know they've pulled in some of my fixes in the past, I'm just not sure about that one.
The EC05 GPS crash problem is due to a synchronization bug that results in interleaved requests to the modem, which gets hosed up. In practice, it happens with relatively low probability so most folks don't run into it, but it is consistently reproducable.
Now, there's probably a separate bug in EG22 that causes the GPS to puke for another reason. If the sync bug is still present, and in response to the GPS puking the RIL issues multiple request to the modem, it could cause a crash just like EC05, but it happens more frequently due to the modem bug.
With the crash bug is fixed, EG22's GPS may still puke, but as you experienced (assuming Bonsai is patched), it will likely fix itself after 20-30 seconds instead of requiriing a reboot.

Do you have reason to believe the GPS issue is related to the others, or is it because they manifest in the same leaked version?
Anyways, kernel panics and watchdog reboots are hard to debug. But a GPS crash is something we can at least log and investigate further. Which is why I'm interested in obtaining a log from someone who either experiences it, or can reproduce it.
every time i go on a road trip i flash my phone back to the last stable rom i used. no way i'm leaving NY these days with a leaked rom
for the record i drove from NYC to manchester TN via DC on EC05 with the GPS and the music player running the whole time and never lost connection for more then a minute in either direction

Fair enough. In any event, I'm still willing to take a look at a logcat if someone affected by this problem can grab one.
If you are running a version of Stock Gingerbread and it's worked for you for at least 4 days without a reboot, please check in here and answer the following questions:
What version ROM, what version modem?
Are percent of the time do you typically spend in a low signal strength area?
What options did you have selected in ODIN when you flashed it?
What launcher do you use?
Is your phone rooted?
How many apps do you have installed, and are not from an "official" market?
How long between charges?
Anything else you may thing contributes to your success with Gingerbread?
You can see where I'm going here. Some people seem to have great luck with gingerbread, others (like me) keep having reboots. Perhaps there is something common between all the lucky users that we can figure out.
1. EH17 on both
2. If I'm at work, I have hardly any phone signal, but usually a bar of 4G. Outside of my office, I get a few bars of 3G.
3. Used Heimdall 1.3 over EH06 which was over EG22. Flashed everything but data, cache, and recovery.
4. Zeam Launcher
5. Yes, rooted.
6. Dozens of apps installed. From official and Amazon market. One app not from any market.
7. Charge daily. Leave on charger at work.
8. Luck of the draw on my phone?
Eg22 rom and modem. Maddoggins lock. Never a reboot. Working nicely. Seems after freezinga few thing the battery is gettting under control. Not even concerned w another flash til an official is released.
1. EG22, ROM and modem
2. Inside my house, there are some dead spots but outside its usually alright
3. Umm i think i put the tar or whatever in phone not PDA and no reset time(obviously)
4. GO Launcher EX
5. Of course
6. Um i think all are from official market that i can think of...?
7. I usually charge every night or just put in a spare battery
8. Well i use Eg22Plus Kernel and qbkings overscroll and battery percent mod. Also use necrosans Eg22 hotspot hack. Ive had one reboot EVER on gingerbread about 2 or 3 days after flashing EG22 but it was after tethering for 3 hours straight haha and i think the phone was just overloaded.
1. EH17 w/ ee03 modem
2. I usually have 5 bars with 3G when I'm using data, and on 4G I'll have two bars most of time. I guess every where I go in Nj have great signal.
3. I don't flash Roms with ODIN.
4. I used Tw4.5 by fr4ggor mostly, now I'm using spb 3d launcher.
5. Yes, I'm rooted
6. I have 28 apps installed from the official market.
7. I use my phone till it dies then charge it once it's dead, until its at a reasonable percentage, maybe like 60% - 70%.

There is now way possible that anyone of us can be 100% sure that we haven't got a random reboot unless we stare at the phone 24/7. The reboots can happen even when we are not attending to the phone or over night in our sleep.
I've had my phone work fine all day and when I get up at 0400h in the morning find my phone just finishing an SD CARD Scan because it rebooted.
IMBO, I believe that this affects all GB roms from the 1st leak to this last one, its an ongoing situation with Sammy / Sprint, possibly thats one of the reasons why we see an increment in the RDF pages...

Actually it's pretty easy to tell. Look at the uptime under Settings>Status>Up time. The number resets with every reboot. If you've never had a reboot it should correspond to the number of hours since you turned on the phone.

Are percent of the time do you typically spend in a low signal strength area? Med-High signal strength
What options did you have selected in ODIN when you flashed it? Used the ".pit" fle nd "repartion" and "auto reboot" selected.
What launcher do you use? I use Go launcher EX.
Is your phone rooted? Yes
How many apps do you have installed, and are not from an "official" market? I have about 25 apps installed 3 aren't from market.
How long between charges? Usually 8-10 hours because of school.
Anything else you may thing contributes to your success with Gingerbread? Hm I feel the repartioningwith the stock deodexed rom helped and the hurricane rom is problem free, and using the EH17plus kernel seperate flash. Oh and the V8 Supercharger update-9 beta-ish script using the multitasing settings.

Actually it's pretty easy to tell. Look at the uptime under Settings>Status>Up time. The number resets with every reboot. If you've never had a reboot it should correspond to the number of hours since you turned on the phone.

Oympus ROM, messing w v6... anyways, just wanted to point out, I get the reboots, sometimes with a lockup, that do NOT show up in uptime or the battery stats (stock). had one 12 hrs ago and both didnt catch it. Mine does the soft reboot, just blacks out then comes back a second later, starting into the SD scan. About every 3rd time, it locks up first, I cant get any response from onscreen or cap. buttons, then it vibes one quick burst then reboots. RAM crash? My ram is still high, any tips on a V6 setup would be appreciated, tried suggested ones around...

Grab the latest V6 (update9beta2) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
MegaRam option #9 worked wonders for mine. Tried other options, but was still getting frequent 'soft' reboots when memory would leak out completely. I simply installed Advance Task Killer to monitor reboots, because anytime it would do a soft reboot the little green guy would be back.
Which Is the best modem for ICS Slim...or which are you using?

Unless if you are getting really bad reception/signal, I would stay with stock.
Most of the ICS roms i've used (i've used just about every single one, except the newer hipster ones) have a good modem built in and it works perfectly for me and apparently alot of other people since no one complains about it.
If it works, leave it at that, it won't improve your battery or anything.
However, if you want a Kernel, check out my signature. It has got the be the BEST kernel to-date for ICS ROMS.
i personally think tht KA7 is de best for all esp wid slim...i am using it n no issues at all...
if wanna hav somthin diff try KA5
I am running Slim 4.2 and I just did a test using a signal strength meter app to test a few different modems and the strength I got from each. I placed the phone in the same place, and stepped away for a minute to make sure my body didn't interact with the signal. Below is what I got:
JI5 - 33%
KA5 - 25%
JL5 - 29%
KA7 - 33%
KB5 - 29%
For me, I got the best from JI5 and KA7. I remember reading a year or so ago that everyone can be different so test it on your system to see what works best for you and signal strength. There is probably a more correct way to do this but it was the best I could come up with. Please add if you have another idea.
KA7 was definitely the best modem for me on Slim.
Currently running Slim 4.2
With Devil3 1.0.3 I find KB5 to work best
Running either the Stock Kernel or Subzero #159 KA7 worked best.
I get fast hard locks everytime with any of the above 3 setups.
Subzero would lock after DS but takes a long time as AGPS updating does not work after DS. So regardless of which Kernel your running, rebooting with the GPS on and locking immediatly when you need to use the GPS is by far quicker. Setting your screen timeout to 2 min or 5 min before rebooting to use the GPS I find helpfull as you need to lock without the screen turning off first which with a 30 second timeout makes difficult (I get easily distracted mind you )
Hope that helps!
Fwiw, here is a chart that shows the data and battery for each modem. Granted it shows Froyo and GB ROMs but can't be too different than ICS. Also I have best with KB5 in Cincinnati. Clearly, YMMV.
