So, I love google voice.
<Back story> I have three Gmail accounts: business, personal, and a junk account. I didn't know there was a limit of it seems two or three times you can tie your phone to a google number. On top of that, my original EVO had to be returned to the store for a defect (i got a new one about 2 months ago)
So I'd love to use google voice again with the account I've already setup (one of my gmails) Problem is when i get to the part of verifying the phone by sending a text message I get "a problem has occured" message from the google voice app.
Some digging on google tells me that my phone number has already been tied to the maximum number of google voice accounts.
Further complicating things (and this one is my own fault) the ONE google voice accoun that I had working on my last phone (a 4th gmail account) I can't remember the password to. This seems to be the account that has the "active" status and would work on my phone if I could just remember the password. It's my junk gmail account, and even password recovery doesnt work.
Anyone got a friendly tip how I can go about getting my original Google voice account setup back on my phone? Is there a particular page on google I can request to have everything wiped out related to my phone and start fresh?
Thanks!
Jeff
Have you tried setting it up on the computer?
yes - anytime I try to setup on a computer it gives me the message "unable to verify number, the phone number you entered is already paired to two google voice accounts"
i guess their limit is two.
The weird thing is while the original phone was physically a different evo, I still have the same cell phone number (using it daily) that I used when I setup my first few google voice accounts.
Its like they just completely forgot to have a "reclaim" feature in their system such that someone can re-pair a phone with their google voice account as long as you verifty ownership of the number, which i totally can.
Go into one of your other numbers and change the main number to a different number. Like home or a friends cell for the time being. Then set up your main on your evo. If you really need 3 GV accounts, you can always get a virtual number for a minimal price. I use 3jam.com.

Google are giving the option for existing users change their address from *@googlemail.com to *@gmail.com and all new users will receive a gmail account instead.
I think It may be limited to the UK.
Welcome to Gmail! As of May 3, 2010, Google's email service is changing its name to Gmail in the United Kingdom. From now on, anybody who signs up for a new Gmail account in the UK will get an @gmail.com address instead of @googlemail.com. The good news is that "gmail" is 50% fewer characters than "googlemail," and with so much emailing going on these days, we estimate this name change will save something like 60 million keystrokes a day. At approximately 217 microjoules per keystroke, that's about the energy of 20 bonbons saved every day!

While all emails are forwarded from googlemail to gmail I was wondering what would happen to my phone. As it turns out, it's completely messed up
My (google) apps don't work now, and there's no option to change my account setting individually. I get a sign-in error with google talk.
Would it be better for me to just hard reset my phone, or does adding my gmail (and deleting my googlemail) syncing account do the same thing? (in settings > accounts & sync)
You will unfortunately have to do a factory reset as you cannot remove your main google account. The 'backup settings' option should remember and download all your apps and remember wifi settings, but you will lose all sms\mms and call logs.
On the plus side Picasa sync will now work
ahh ok, there's probably an update for my ROM anyway
Thanks.
Or you can just go back to @googlemail.com for a while and see if Google sort something out.
Here's hoping we get a "Gmail" icon on the phone instead of an abridged "Google M..."

You can change icon names with Any Cut from the market. It's free.
I'm kinda confused with this thread... Is this a UK only thing? I've had [email protected] for years now (since early beta) and on my nexus one the shortcut is named "Gmail".
Not just UK, some other parts of Europe too I believe.
ive just changed mine and i can still access the market ok.
i did get the google talk error tho.
once cyan 5.0.7 is rls'd ill do a full wipe and change my main account to @gmail.

They started with Gmail, but another company was using gmail also so they changed it to googlemail... or so I heard. (Existing Gmail users were allowed to keep Gmail but new users got a googlemail account.) I guess the company went bust or Google bought them out
That's what I heard anyway.
Maybe it's just a UK/Euro thing...
How do you remove the Google Voice Service from you Google account. It's looking like I'll have to delete my Google Account and Master Reset my phone to get rid of Google Voice, cause they don't let you remove the service from you account and it doesn't allow you to remove the physical phone from the Google Voice settings...
Has anyone found out how to close down Google Voice the way you can close down Google Buzz or Blogger?
Would really suck to have to change my entire email address just to get rid of this ****.
EDIT: Oh, so you can't remove this service. Guess it's time to start going to 100k different places and changing my email, send out mass notices, and create a brand new Google account. I can't believe this ****...

You don't have to use Google Voice but you do need a google account. What you can do is via a computer, change your Google Account password, then your Android will prompt you to update it. At that time you should be able to enter a new google email/password and you would be good to go.
If you are looking for a new e-mail address, you can keep your old and always forward to your new. I hope I understood your question and answered it.
Get a phone number with Skype or other VOIP service (or use your work phone). Edit your settings in Google Voice to make that number active. Removed your mobile number.
Better?
https://www.google.com/voice?pli=1#phones delete the phone number from there and deactivate the GV, what's the big deal?
You can't remove the only number on Google Voice.
I'm not paying for another number just to do this.
Already in the process of moving everything over to another email address.
I'll just get rid of the account, after I have T-Mobile change my phone number.
Why do you need to remove it? Just stop using the service....

It had my number in it. I wanted it out. I changed my number this afternoon and moved everything over to my Live acct.

Just replace forwarding number with some other number like gizmo5 and and then log off Google voice service on your phone. that should take care of it.
Way to take the hard road and complain while doing it.
You were given some good options, not sure why you felt the need to create a thread and ignore all advice...
Let's just leave the troll alone no need to conduct an exit interview.
^ true... true.
Has anyone experienced problems using Google Voice Actions (long press the search key) on their Evo over the past 12 hours?
Mine all of a sudden will not pull contact info from Google anymore. My contacts are 100% synced with my Google GMail contacts as I know this is a prerequisite but if I say "Send Text to, Chuck, hey there" instead of putting Chucks name and phone number in the TO box the text is in the body of the message:
Message: Chuck hey there.
Another user over at Google mobile forums has reported the same issue starting last night.
Just wondering how wide spread this is?
Thanks!
Todd
Mine is doing the same exact thing. Mine was working fine and now it's not working. I've posted this same question last night and a few people said it was still working for them. I checked my co-workers evo and his still works. I'm not sure what the problem is. I've tried everything! I flashed a few different roms and even went back to sprint stock and nothing is working. I even created a new gmail account and added a few contacts thinking there was something wrong with my original account and that didn't fix the problem either. Sorry to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one. It means that it's not my phone and something on google's end. I wonder how many other people this is affecting. Let me know if you find a solution.
Do both of you have your contacts in phone or synced from Google or an Exchange account?
Sent from my Evo using XDA App
No contacts on the phone. All are synced with Google. Syncing works fine. Changes happen on both sides. I also sync with an Exchange server for work contacts.
The contacts I use with Voice Actions are only Google (personal) contacts.
Me too. All my contacts are synched with Google. I mean i had it working the other day, but for some reason it just stopped recognizing everyone on my phone book. The weird part is that if I change the voice language to English (UK) instead of (US) I can voice dial but can't "send text to" or "send email to". I posted this in the Google forum and an employee said he was looking into it so I don't know if its a known problem or not. It doesn't seem to be affecting a lot of users of I'd see more traffic to this thread and more complaints. Right now I'm trying out Vlingo. I kind of like it better than Google voice actions.
All working again for me. Google says it was a server issue.
I reset an Inspire 4G today because the user's Google Account address was changed. Before resetting, the contact's name would show up when called. After resetting, the contact's name will not show up. Every call is UNKNOWN even though the contact and phone number is listed in the Contacts.
All contacts are synced via Google Sync. All contacts exist just like before with the old Google Email address.
All that was done was a "Factory Reset" and a new Google mail.
Anyone have any idea on how to get a contact's name to display when they are calling again?
I'm bumping this in hope for information.
By any chance maybe its your contact who changed a setting to block their number.
I have a friend who switches to private alot on her phone and forgets to change it back. In her case it simple setting in her blackberry
Sent from my TARDIS using XDA App
Nah, no blocking enabled for any of the contacts. Yet it happens for all of them (at least 20 called and don't display anything but their phone number).
I've actually always had a similar problem with my contact recognition. My problem isn't that serious though.
As far as mine goes, it simply cannot differentiate between my sister's and my dad's cell phone. I found a pretty simple fix for that. I'm not sure (at all) how this fixed it, but all I did was swap the primary number with some other one.
(In my case setting my dad's BB as his primary as opposed to his iPhone seemed to solve it).
Just tried to install Google Voice on my PH-1 with Android Pie. I got nowhere.
I am wondering if privacy setting could have anything to do with it...
If anyone can point me towards someone that has it working that may wish to provide a little tutelage I would appreciate it.
Of course I have a gmail account. But when I installed, I chose the account then I see several pages fly by and then at the bottom is has a box stating to switch accounts.
I am more than a little clueless at this time.

If it helps you at all, I signed up for my Google voice number on the website before I signed into the app on my phone. From there it didn't require any other input aside from setting ringtones. I use it at my daily contact number.
It's working fine for me. Have you used Google Voice before on another phone? The basics should be the same. Once you get assigned a number that's associated with a gmail account, you should be able to go to settings in the app on the phone and set it up. The GV number and the phone number it's forwarded to are in the first part of settings.
