Your phone is saving the text messages to your microSD card. When Sense calls for them, the phone will hang while searching for every single message.
By deleting old messages and keeping your inbox less that 100 messages, you should see a significant drop in the length of time before a contact or message is loaded.
Also, this has been attributed to the Class 2 microSD card that shipped with the phone. Some xda members have reported a much better experience with a smaller, higher class card.

thanks for the quick reply sir. i was under the impression text messages are saved in the internal memory just like my old windows mobile phone?
so i should limit the number of text messages to 100 or less? ive had close to a 1000 text messages in my old windows mobile phone and it didnt hang when someone is calling or when im receiving sms messages. i thought this phone could handle more since it has a higher specs
what kind of memory card is recommended for htc hd2 tmobile? will class 4 do? or it should be higher? (6, 8, 10?)
thanks in advance

Do a search on this forum for "class 4" and you'll see a lot of threads started about this issue when the phones first came out:
668216
i tried changing my memory card from class 2 to class 6. the phone still hanged
i still have to wait for the message/s to arrive before i can resume doing anything
i think i may have found the culprit
too many text messages in my inbox
after erasing most of the almost 2000 messages, it didnt hang anymore

Dear Group, i've only had the quickest of looks at my new Wizard cos its a xmas prezzy lol. Anyways, just to check it works i put my SIM from my mobile fone into it and sent myself a SMS message. Sure enough it worked, only a message popped up saying that it was full and i need to delete some messages (or words to that effect)
But from where? I find it a wee bit confusing to tell the truth. On my mobile i can save about 20 texts to the SIM and 200 to the phone memory, can i do the same thing with my Wizard?
The SIM that i put in has texts saved to it, but how would i access them in the Wizard.
And, while i hopefully have your attention, is there anyway to save texts from different contacts into different folders? And even better, is there a way to filter them out automagically?
All help gratefully received
There's one friend who I text regularly, and I'm not sure how many messages I have from her, but today something strange happened.
I received a message from her and it looked like it came from a different number because it started a new thread. Then I realised there wasn't another thread, and for a moment I thought I'd lost all the messages. But then I noticed they still appear on the TouchFlo.
When I tap any message from her before the first message of the new thread, it opens the message in the old style (i.e. as if threading is switched off).
I thought maybe I'd accidentally moved all the messages. But they don't appear in any other folder, and they are definitely in my inbox, which I confirmed with Jeyo Mobile Companion.
So, shall I just continue with the new thread and ignore the last messages? Is there definitely a limit? Is there any other threading software?
I have never heard anything like this before.

Haven't heard or experienced anything like this. Usually you have a max limit of approx 50 sms in your inbox (not conversations with someone using threaded sms, but actual sms from diffrerent people), but it shouldn't behave like yours.
I'm assuming this female is (very) close to you and you do not want to delete previous sms? I would delete them and use new thread and see if same thing happens
Hi there, just by habit I never delete any of the threaded text messages to and from my girlfriend, and so there must be over well 2000 in the conversation.
The same thing happened to me once, I just assumed there was a limit on a conversation size, and so it started a new one. It's a shame how it deals with the old one though, stopping the threading. I sync'ed all the old messages using Microsoft myphone and deleted it, just leaving the new thread.
Access old thread?

This exact thing has just happened to me, also texting the girlfriend ... She has told me things that i have probably agreed to and since forgoten, is there any way to look at the old thread as the touch flow only allows me to go back 25 messages from all contacts. They must still be there as some of them are still in the 25 touch flow messages, unless it has its own cache?
FYI my best estimate would be some where in the region of 1000 - 1500 sms, double that with replies so is there a thread limit of 2500 or 3000?
Any ideas?
SMS limit
Exactly same happened to me this morning...I am using the HTC 6.1 WWE Rom on my ATT tilt.
No thread of older sms but they are in my inbox (confirmed by disabling the threaded sms). Mine too have 3000+ sms on my tilt.
Do any one get the fix/work arond for the sam to see the older sms in threaded form.
[email protected]
Approximately 2740 sms in a sigle thread as i met that situation. any ideas??
is there any way to cap the number of SMS messages that are stored in my inbox and sent box? I don't use conversation mode with the bug still about making texting impossible so id rather just limit the number if texts stored on the phone.. Cheers
how many texts do you need before the bug starts, I've not had it hsppen as yet on stock 1.48 ROM with hotfixes.
cheers
Dean
not that many if I'm being honest, but I text like I would write on a chat program so i go through tonnes of texts just in one small chat lol. which means no text is really important so if the phone deleted old ones for new ones after like 20 id be happy. my Nokia e51 could do it lol...
Any news on this topic?
I use the conversation mode, but even with all the new fixes and ROMs which have helped to speed up the loading time no doubt, it would still be nice to limit the number of messages. When it loads the messages typing becomes laggy and rather annoying.
i have currently on one contact more than 1300 messages with stock1.48 including all hotfixes an do not have any issues with.the input field is given free instantly even if the counter ist working and messages are loading. the only odd thing is that sometimes all messages are loaded prompt and sometimes they dont... propabely some kinda caching bla bla
cheers
lee
Yea, I haven't figured when and why it needs to be loaded either. But mine gets laggy while the counter counts...
This has been annoying me lately and i am wondering if anyone has a solution: When i scroll across to my messages tab - the text message that appears on the screen is not alway the most recent (or unread text).
Is there a way to make it display the first unread text message or is it stuck on displaying the last text i looked at?
I know i can click "all messages" and then get a list of everyone who texted me (conversation mode) or i could scroll up on the messages tab to see my latest texts...but it would be pretty neat if it automatically displayed the first unread text and i can just scroll up to see any other unread texts.
Oh and while we are it, i'm gonna guess it is normal for the non-custom rom versions of the phone to get laggy when there is about 80-100 texts in memory. Is this a common annoyance? I've read about how the tmobile sd card is flakey and could cause lag, is this relevant?
Thanks for your time, oh yeah and im using the newest rom from tmobile's website and have htc sense enabled.
Hello. Well, in regards to your messaging question: all stock versions of Sense that I have seen will in fact display the last message received and not the last message viewed... Strange to hear you are having problems with this. Perhaps your Date/Time settings are incorrect? I have seen issues where message get arranged very strangely if the Date/Time is off sync..
In regards to the threads of 80-100 texts: I would agree that the phone will at times become sluggish and/or laggy during normal usage. I recommend keeping threads under 50 for best performance. It's unfortunate you are still having this probelm after upgrading to T-mobile's latest official ROM as apparently this should have been addressed more...
The 16Gb SD card that comes with your phone shouldn't effect the SMS behavior although it is only a Class 2 16Gb, so an increase in Class size will improve SD accessibility.
Good luck.
Thanks for your reply.
I think you're right about it switching to the most recent text, i just checked again and it apparently happens only when the phone is initially locked. When i tap the lock (instead of sliding), then slide the message icon to the left or right, it will take me to an older text message (in the messages tab) rather than the new text!
1) Why is there a relationship between number stored text messages and delay time between when phone first lights up until I am unable to unlock the phone and read my message? It seems sometimes when I have even 200+ messages stored, my phone will light up indicating a text is being received, but will "freeze" until it has (what seems to be) re-loaded every text stored. Only then, allowing me to access my new text message. So fukcing frustrating...it has to be Sense related.
- No, turning off Sense does not fix the problem either. I'm stock ROM (2nd to latest ROM upgraded)
2) Why does Swype, in threaded mode, insist on having every message load prior to being able to use it? Again, if a contact has 200+ messages in their thread, the phone is useless until all messages have loaded...
I enjoy using the threaded view, because I'm often referring back to previous text messages in my conversations. I can avert the Swype loading by using traditional mode. As of right now, it's either Swype + traditional or no Swype + threaded. I shouldn't feel I should have to choose, am I right?
I realize I can just delete my messages every 200+ that occur, but I reach that in a couple of days. Deleting takes too long too and going through SMS Backup is a too much of a pain if it's not for 1000+ texts.
I know this is cache/memory related. I wish there was a way to transfer the texts from phone storage to SD storage. I'm running a Class 6 too, so I don't think I can attribute slow processing speeds to the card either.
Thanks in advance. I realize this is MOST likely a repeated question. But I feel I haven't been able to arrive to a just answer from searching.
yep, its an ooold problem with no specific fix other than don't save more than 100 or so txts.
tried the latest rom?
I find that using a custom ROM has pretty much fixed the problem of HTC messageing freezing like that for me. I constantly have 1000+ texts in 3-4 threads, and have minimal wait times for messageing to open and let me reply.
Try using the latest TMO USA stock ROM. This ROM seems to have completely eliminated any problems with the HTC messaging app.
I have twitter send tweets from certain users as txt messages to my phone. The thread for twitter has reached over 1000 messages on a couple of occasions with this new ROM without causing significant lag like the previous stock ROM used to
swype is crap I notice that was the problem why my sms app would slow app...I use the regular keyboard and I have over 300 messages with one contact and its still not slowing up, and on top of that I notice I type faster with the regular keyboard....first time I used the keyboard since i got the phone back in june
I recommend a rom without HTC messaging. HTC messaging is still slow wether its stock rom or custom. Why they decided to uber up WinMo SMS I will never know.
