Might this help Development? Telus Source released. - Fascinate General

http://androidspin.com/2011/01/14/froyo-source-code-released-for-samsung-fascinate-3g-on-telus/

I have already downloaded it and will be investigating the possibility of using it soon. Be warned the radios are different. There maybe also some other changes in api.

The Telus Fascinate is essentially a Vibrant. Given that no other SGS Froyo leaks have been ported to our device, I doubt having the source to a Froyo leak will give much more than we already had. It may however get a more stable Froyo release for the GSM models.

This. The problem has been with the RIL, basically getting the OS to play nice with the radio. Radios on the Telus Fascinate and the Verizon one are totally different.
Kaos is making ridiculous progress though.

Cyanogenmod?

Any word on when cyanogenmod is coming to the fascinate?

I believe we need to wait until froyo then it should be shortly after that...but i could be wrong...

Nope. It will be here when there is a big ass thread title at the top of these forums saying CYANOGENMOD FOR FASCINATE ZOMGOMGOMG!!!
Don't ask for ETA's
The biggest problem is the different versions of the Galaxy S. The most likely solution is if a few developers would commit to porting it for the Fascinate.
The biggest problem that we currently have (correct me if I'm wrong) is the developers that are committed to bringing Cyanogen to the phone combined with the fact that we have a jacked up source code.
This is all speculation so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
@cyanogrn has also said that they dont have a test fascinate. If they had a donated phone or if there were some way to designate a donation for that particular phone, i would contribute. They dont seem real focused on it at the moment.

No, the biggest problem we have is that it's based on Froyo and we don't have Froyo source or even a leaked update.

That is not the biggest problem, as there are versions of CM that are based on android 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2
The biggest problem right now is that Samsung hired some really smart programmers that make really stupid decisions, like using a RIL from android 1.5 and hacking it together to work on 2.1

There wouldn't be much use in using Cyanogenmod 5x. Froyo, at least, is what we need to look toward the future.
I am DYING for Cyanogenmod, for a few simple reasons, including BASIC google functionality that was not built into this phone.
The most annoying right now is the lack of multiple Google calendars not even showing up in Samsung's handicapped Calendar app.
My HTC Eris has a 2.6.29 kernel. This phone is a year newer. The playing field should be different.

Possibility of community made future Android updates

Hi guys,
I'm new to the whole android scene but not linux, and I was wondering, are devs always going to have to wait for Samsung to post their kernel source before they can build updated versions of Android to the Fascinate? I got this phone largely because people told me that once Motorola stops supporting the Droid X, it will be stuck, whereas with the Fascinate the community can build updated versions of the OS. But clearly that isn't the case right now. Is this just because devs don't want to waste their time when it's supposedly coming any day now, or is it technically too hard for them to do? Once CyanogenMod is ported, will we be set for the life of our phones, or will we keep having to wait for Samsung's kernel patches to be released? I would really appreciate any answers I can get. Thanks!
I think the devs cant really do anything new to their roms until cyanogenmod is ported to the fascinate. However, since cyangenmod is based on 2.2, fascinate is stock until 2.2 is leaked our released. I think the devs are just waiting for dj05 to be released right now, unless 2.2 magically appears.

I do not agree with you as my G1 was stuck at 1.6 when Cyanogen built 2.0, then 2.1, then 2.2 for it...
I do believe that the developers can take it to 2.2 and further... However, one of the issues is that Samsung gives us open source code that is flawed or does not compile at all.
Mmmmmmmmmmm
They are attempting to get us better ROMs and such, but Samsung's source and crappy RIL are causing issues with doing so. I have faith that they will get us something great here at some point though.

Is it a matter of time before we see Gingebread?

Just wanted to know if its only a matter of time before we see android 2.3 roms on samsung galaxy vibrant? I know the nexus s has 2.3 but i don't know what that means for other high end android phones. Do we have to wait for a leaked version before we can install 2.3, or can developers create a rom just like gingerbread on the nexus s? THANKS in advance!

Right now theres an experimental build out. Team whiskey is still working on putting out another version as per their site.
Experimental - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887993
Proof of still developing - http://board.teamwhiskey.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=832&start=4
As much as I would like 2.3, you have to know that T-Mobile has not released 2.2 OTA yet. I'm guessing Samsung is going to skip 2.2.1 and HOPEFULLY start developing 2.3 for the SGS lines. Giving Samsung's software track record along with T-Mobiles crappy service (in terms of getting updates out), it'll be a long while before we can even sniff 2.3 (thats been built and leaked for the Vibrant, not ported over).
Samsung's website (think it is under firmware link) shows the sgs including the usa tmobile sgs planned for the 2.3 update.......... to be safe look for it in August-Oct 2011 not before (my guess)

Lol, we might not get official 2.2 by then.
I doubt very much we ever see official 2.3 on this phone.
I agree and think tmobile would like to foget these variant phones all together and concentrate on future developments. The SGS phones are in need of upgrades multicore. Sammy the industry leader and can't get bogged down with last yrs tech.

Official Gingerbread comes to Vibrant in Canada

Here's the article:
http://www.androidcentral.com/ginge...bell-and-virgin-samsung-galaxy-s-vibrant-kies
So, hopefully this will get ported quickly and fix some of the issues with the current Gingerbread roms...
Wow, great news

I am just curious if this is really as good of a report as it sounds. If as some of the comments said it is really an i9000 variant will it have any impact on the tmobile vibrant?
pretty sure the vibrant in canada is more similar to the i9000 so actually it wont help :-(
On a side note, can someone explain to me exactly which part is holding us back?
To my understanding there are the following different parts of the system:
1) The baseband/modem
2) The kernel
3) The actual rom (froyo, gingerbread...)
So why can't we update to gingerbread once we have the AOSP (which was released right?) Is it because of the drivers specific to our vibrant as opposed to a stock i9000?
that is my understanding, the specifics that are unique to our device such as drivers and modems. the ones from other builds are not compatible. but again that is only my understanding and I in no way claim to know for sure. I could just as easily be wrong as I could be right.
the vibrant is different, its a variant of i9000
A few here are correct, the Canadian Vibrant is actually the I9000M.
We really don't have another phone that is akin to the Vibrant. The I9000 variants have some things that are very similar and others that we have to fix and work around. Same holds true for the Captivate.
We can get close to 100% but may never actually get there without Vibrant specific firmware.

So will there be another OTA? If so is there a wishlist? Does it matter?

I'm pretty sure ICS came out late enough that Sprint and Samsung are not obligated to upgrade the Epic 4g to it. I'm also pretty sure we will not see an official ICS OTA upgrade.
So is there anything that could come in a GB OTA upgrade that would be useful to the developers here?
It seems as if a lot of Epic 4g development effort is dedicated to ICS as CM9 which is a good thing even though I'm not there yet.
So does anyone here care about Sprint/Samsung doing more GB development? Or have we gotten about all of the useful source we are going to get and the developers are essentially on their own from here?

Sprint/Samsung weren't obligated to update our devices to Gingerbread. It was sold under the premise that we would have Froyo, but not a revolving door of major OS upgrades. (Android Upgrade Alliance agreement defunct?)
There is development going on for EL30, our most recent OTA update of Gingerbread; as well as CM9, which is ICS based.
There is a leak labeled FB15, so it looks like there may be another official release being worked for our device. Keep in mind that it is still Gingerbread. So why are you asking about a "wishlist"?

I do not believe any "fixes" or improvements are going into the Epic. I do believe Sprint is looking for a less intrusive CIQ replacement to get their network data. So don't expect anything from Sprint or Samsung to help out the devs here. ICS ports are the future here and ICS official is not going to be on the Galaxy S series because of memory limitations due to the use of Samsung's proprietary BML File system.

Yes...with a mysterious new software service added and early version numbers...similiar to how CIQ was listed.
