Cyanogenmod? - Fascinate General

Any word on when cyanogenmod is coming to the fascinate?
Sent from my overclocked undervolted 1.2Ghz SCH-I500 using XDA App

I believe we need to wait until froyo then it should be shortly after that...but i could be wrong...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Nope. It will be here when there is a big ass thread title at the top of these forums saying CYANOGENMOD FOR FASCINATE ZOMGOMGOMG!!!
Don't ask for ETA's

The biggest problem is the different versions of the Galaxy S. The most likely solution is if a few developers would commit to porting it for the Fascinate.
The biggest problem that we currently have (correct me if I'm wrong) is the developers that are committed to bringing Cyanogen to the phone combined with the fact that we have a jacked up source code.
This is all speculation so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

@cyanogrn has also said that they dont have a test fascinate. If they had a donated phone or if there were some way to designate a donation for that particular phone, i would contribute. They dont seem real focused on it at the moment.

would be nice but i aint dieing to have it.

No, the biggest problem we have is that it's based on Froyo and we don't have Froyo source or even a leaked update.

That is not the biggest problem, as there are versions of CM that are based on android 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2
The biggest problem right now is that Samsung hired some really smart programmers that make really stupid decisions, like using a RIL from android 1.5 and hacking it together to work on 2.1

There wouldn't be much use in using Cyanogenmod 5x. Froyo, at least, is what we need to look toward the future.
I am DYING for Cyanogenmod, for a few simple reasons, including BASIC google functionality that was not built into this phone.
The most annoying right now is the lack of multiple Google calendars not even showing up in Samsung's handicapped Calendar app.
My HTC Eris has a 2.6.29 kernel. This phone is a year newer. The playing field should be different.

Gingerbread sdk out next week?

Going through a lot of white pages and news articles...gingerbread might just be around the corner...once the sdk drops it won't be long before devs jump on it and everyone has it on there android handsets...might take longer for samsung phones but that's just because they want to keep their stuff top security classified it seems like.anyways just seen the news poping around for the past few days and didn't see a post on it...check out android spin and the other top resources if you like....

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Yes, I am seeing this news everywhere also. Something interesting is that they (Beta Testers) say that Gingerbread will "change the way we use our phones." This sounds like something major.

Yep, the joke is on us suckers, who go fooled by Samsung's lofty statements about the Galaxy S being their mobile game-changer.
Gingerbread will change the UI dramatically, and thus it will really change the way people use Android. OS 2.1 and 2.1 still feel like work in progress, and even Google claims that OS 3 will finally take the platform to a mature stage.
But I am losing faith that we'll see Gingerbread on the Galaxy S. By the time we finally get Froyo, Gingerbread will probably be officially released.
Then Samsung will EOL the Galaxy S, repackage it with a slightly faster chip version and go to market trying to get new suckers to buy the Gingerbread version, or old suckers to upgrade to it....
Phew!
If the release it for the galaxy s 2 or whatever it will be much easier for the devs to port over than it is for them to get group working now since samsung will most certainly keep very similar hardware in the next iteration of the phone.

Hopefully true.
But there is little excuse for Samsung being so slow to push upgrades. It's been 5 months since the OFFICIAL Froyo release, and Samsung must have had access to betas way earlier.
It will also be inexcusable if they don't upgrade the current Galaxy S to Gingerbread, since it's such a major upgrade and the phone hardware is compliant with it.
I am grateful for the devs here, but at the same time, I just went back to stock JI6 (just with a standard Android lockscreen mod), and frankly the battery life improved a little, plus the phone seems a bit more stable overall.
At this point I just want stability and the latest released firmware and OS. And it's Samsung's responsibility to provide it in a timely manner.

CyanogenMod7 progress going well for Galaxy S

* MTD
* Radio
* Audio
* GPS
* Wifi
* Bluetooth
* HQ Video PLayback
* internal SD-Card
* external SD-Card
* Light Sensor
* Acceleration Sensor
* Initial Updater-Script for first rollout
What's not working:
* LQ Video Playback
* Camera
* Polling problem on RIL
* 2G/3G toggle
* Compass
* FM-Radio
* TV-Out
* USB sharing of internal SD-Card
Impressive progress.
With this, and the newer official Vibrant kernel source pending to be released, we might have a 100% functioning CM7 on our Vibrants and therefore a completely AOSP Gingerbread. Though Team Whiskey already made an experimental Gingerbread build that mostly works. Either way I'm excited for this progress of bringing AOSP to the Galaxy S and it's variants (especially our variant )
EDIT: Sorry if this isn't fit for the development section, maybe it should be moved to general?
FM-Radio? As far as i know it was decided that the vibrant does not have the hardware for this
Could they still meet the old broken camcorder and black and white previews issues on the CM6 build?
For me, as long as they fix the camera and polling, it is good for me. I don't have a data plan or use youtube very much. On the CMSGSTeam twitter it says coolya added some tweaks to the RIL java file.

is it true that this roms allows us to use more ram?

No, the galaxy s has a maximum user available ram at 339 mb I think, provided by a speedmod kernel. The rest of the 512 mb is reserved for the video card, phone, and android system.

On a serious note, it looks like the big guts of the project(basic functionality) has been done. Excited to see this when it comes to life.
I kind of gave up on any CM roms a while back. I donated to the cause and its been over six months already and nothing. At least nothing close to stable. I'm sticking with Team Whiskey . I love cyanogen on my.G1 but as far as the Vibrant goes I love me some TW. Who knows though, maybe I'll change my mind when it comes out

A small (hopefully inflammatory) question for ppl that are familiar with the Rom.
Is CM really worth all the fuss/hype?
I read ppl carrying 2 batteries for the sake of running cm6 beta...
And people fawning over the idea over Cm7, which doesn't seem to have full support from the CM devs to Bring it over to the Vibrant.
Is it that good of a rom? Vast improvement over what TW/D4A/Einharjar currently offer us?
(Don't have a phone that it natively supports Cm)
Just want to get some impressions, thanks!

They've been "working on" it for months with basically nothing to show for it. I can put out all the twitter feeds I want, it doesn't mean I have anything useful. "TheDude" or whatever his name was/is that was in charge of the Vibrant development portion of CM hasn't updated his twitter feed in forever in regards to CM for the Vibrant. I'd call that abandoned.
The point is, there is nothing from CM for the US SGS variants available right now that's A) not already been done by everyone else and/or B) stable/reliable/working and/or C) A monster battery hog (due to it being based off the... wait for it... international I-9000 kernel. The last update for the SGS was in October... October! And that's the I-9000 stuff that does us in Vibrant land very little good. So not only was the last release from CM for the SGS more than 3 months ago, it was almost completely useless to the US variants.
So, that's what we're talking about. The fact that CM has released nothing relevant for the Vibrant since it was released. That's not a knock on CM, it's just a simple statement of the facts. CM is largely irrelevant to the Vibrant scene and that void has been filled by other rom chefs, as such, the CM name has simply been coasting on inertia since then. If CM came on the scene with the release of the Vibrant, no one would even know of the group/person because they've released basically nothing.
If you know of a single release for the Vibrant by CM since last July, I'm all ears. But as far as I know, and I'm pretty up to date mind you, there has been exactly zero released for the Vibrant and I'm pretty sure the same holds true for the 3 other US variants as well.
Thanks for this update and keeping us in the "Know", will look forward to this comple

The reason everyone wants cm is that its aosp plus community extras. Cm started with htc because thats all there was. Most htc phones are similar. The og droid was pure android like the g1 and the n1 both have source and drivers. Vibrant has touchwiz and no source for 2.2 both of those count to why we don't have cm. plus samsung does things different making it hard to build from aosp source. I think we will see it when some form of basic aosp shows its head to the vibrant (nexus s). The nexus s is the single best chance for cm or aosp on the vibrant. Personally I welcome it because many of the touchwiz stuff we want will be in cm and still be aosp based. They already use a similar notification bar like on touchwiz. Pure android is fast, pure android is aosp. We have nothing on vibrant or I9000 that is aosp based and fully working. Everything on the vibrant is based on samsung precompiled software(2.2). Btw cm is known for stability and speed. Dont believe me, try a stock 2.2 g1. Then try cm. its light and day. The g1 is pure android already. No skins or anything. Just like nexus phones. In fact it was the first dev phone. Samsung made everything different to stand out for sales. It worked. With one product line they reach the top. I do wish they would put someone a little more talented on the project or at least more people considering we have maybe the largest number of android variant.

You are spot on with this....When I got my g1 it was people like cyanogen jesusfreak and the dude making roms. cyanogen has provided us with features and additions that we wish google would have put in place. I always default to cyanogen roms when available. For now though I am loving teamwhiskey so I do not feel like I am missing anything.
I flashed cyanogenmod on a mytouch slide last night and the phone became 2-3 times faster than stock: it was the first time the phone could run a live wallpaper or play angry birds without any lag. So I'm pretty excited for this to be ported to the vibrant.

OP it should also be noted that the current ports are almost entirely non-functioning, and really just a proof of concept at this point.
I thought it was already established it can be used on phones because
of all the different resolution folders in the system .
There is actually nothing saying HC won't work on phones. As far as it being merged into CM, that will happen if and when its dropped in AOSP, as Steve and the gang only build from source.

I think it'd be cool if there was a decent TV out option. Things may get a little cramped, but I'd give it a shot. Would be sweet to dual boot it because as a daily driver it wouldn't be as good as something like CM or Virtuous.

Honeycomb isn't as polished as gingerbread is internally, and it was developed to run on tablets. I wouldn't run it even if there was an official version for our phone. Google needs to tweak it some more before I'd say its ready for mainstream.

Gingersense - Not happening Right Now

Great advancements have been made with the HD2 over the course of the last 6/7 months none more so than us being able to have NAND Android on our phone and much credit and respect due to everyone involved.
I've noticed though over the last few months that Gingerbread with Sense seems to be all the rage, unfortunately I don't believe any great major progress has been made recently, I'm looking through and have flashed various gingersense builds but its the same problems with them all camcorder,graphic glitches, Wi-Fi trouble,etc etc seem to common reoccurring problems,I've no doubt in time that these issues will be resolved but it seems some people who are content to have a build that might only be say 80% complete on their phone just because it is gingersense as opposed to a build that is 100% stable and thats a bit baffling really, as I said no doubt these issues will in time be resolved but until then personally speaking ill just stick with my stable froyo build until I get my Samsung Galaxy S2.

I have gingercyanomod (did i just make up a word too???) and i tell you pal, ginger is worth it in some perhaps little aspects! (nothing compared to cyanogen mods which i love above all)
all is working ok for me on Android 2.3.4 ...ok, i could do with native usb tethering (theres an app for that!) and true hd camera drivers but these are little things i can live without.
Better that than having to use windows mobile right?
As for sense builds etc, i dont see the point unless you are lucky enough to have bought the TMOUS HD2... every single sense build i tried on my EU HD2, regardless of overclocking, just runs laggy and annoyingly freezes all the time... sure i can have data and sync off and it will run smoother, but thats crap innit?
Using NAND Typhoon for HD2 3.3.2v MAGLDR (clk still has a few bugs imo)
I was looking around to see if the source code for gingersense had been released and I went to http://developer.HTC.com and the first thing on there is HTC Desire HD - GB MR - 2.6.35 kernel source code and when I downloaded it the file is called ace-2.6.35-gb-MR.tar. now I have no idea but isn't that what they need? Or is it there something else?

Reaction to Official GB will Reveal All
I suspect the reaction to the official gingerbread release will tell us. I suspect we'll see a flurry of the standard players after the GB release, Bonsai (my favorite), ACS, etc. However, they will quickly reach the point where they have done all they can do, (i.e. applied all the currently known tweaks/patches).
After that, it's really CM. CM7 development (based on commits) seems to have slowed a bit after a flurrish at the end of May. If the CM7 team is able to get it stable based on the official GB source, the Epic can then ride the CM train for a while. If that doesn't happen, I expect 1-2 revisions of tweeked ROMs based on GB from each team, particularly Bonsai and ACS and then development on the Epic will be done.
More tasty deserts with CM7.

I agree if we are lucky we may get an ice cream sammich. With CM7 we can get timely upgrades of more tasty deserts like jelly beans, kiwi pudding, lemon meringue pie, etc, etc....
Not even looking at icecream sandwitch, if we get to CM7, we will not just get major updates, but we'll get regular, minor releases as well. Those can provide additional featuers. (I'd personally LOVE to get the granular permissions control thats being added to CM7.) If we don't get to CM7, we can dream about ICS, but in reality, we're unlikely to get features and instead only get ROM tweeks (and kernel modules).
Also we will have continued development and not have development stop because of lack of source code. That is what I hate most about not being on cyanogenmod. With the lawsuit with apple Samsung should seriously consider working more with cyanogenmod and just dump touch wiz all together. In my opinion touch wiz is not all that impressive and serious limits the phone's compatibility.

I don't use touchwiz as my launcher but I've come to really appreciate the other small enhancements touchwiz brings.
I might be the only one but I really cannot stand sense.
This phone works great - I don't think it really needs that many more updates.

ya im really hopin once 2.3 comes out the CM7 team will get everything on track. i agree with the fact CM7 will more than likely be our last hope after 2.3 comes out, atleast for those who want to stay up to date with an older handset which has great hardware regardless. single core or not, epic has been a dream phone to me, especialy coming from the moment(touch pro 2, touch pro, mogul and ppc 6700 before that. i wont ever go all touch, KB is too important for me). the devs on here are great and keep guys like us loving our phones but i also dont forsee ICS coming to the Epic, even though google made an announcement that android phones will be updated to new software at minimum of 18months AFTER release, although that announcment was made more than 6 months after the epic came out. sucks that this phone hasnt even hit the 1 year mark yet and we are already at EOL even on firmware side. hopefully google puts the pressure on the manufacturers AND service providers for these updates regardless of when they announced that. only time will tell guys but regardless i wont buy a phone without a KB. at this point im so satisfied with my epic i can see myself rockin this bad boy for another 3+ years if need be, does what i want, when i want and has one of the best 5-row KB ive ever used. only thing missin on my EE03 is for impaler to make a keyboard fix for these dropped keys lol i miss my speed demon patch, BIG life saver for me. i type as fast if not at times faster on my epic than i do on a regular PC keyboard =P
Love. It I'm using cm7
