I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if your knowledge is limited you might not want to root your phone.
If you can set up adb, follow simple commands, get the proper drivers installed for your phone to be recognized by your PC, etc...it's a fairly simple process.

Another example of the community spoiling people with 1 click root apps
Please for the sake of your phone, read about rooting and sut up your PC to use ADB before rooting your phone, or you will be in a world of hurt and looking for more help... I'm sure you are smart enough to do it, just do some research... it is actually a very easy process as everything is layed out step by step... Every thread in development here is worth reading... sorry i'm not here to preach, just help... but def read first so when your ready you'll know what to do, and where to go for help. unfortunately a post like this won't get you much help.
I see what the OP is saying. Verizon's handy work imitates a cd drive when plugged into PC. So putting in commands through cmd doesn't work -- at least it didn't with me, because it's not finding the device. I've got a lot of homework to do myself but Z4 1.3 sideloaded works on DI01 and not on DL09.
OP -- check out this thread:

adrynalyne is hot on this and f'n amazing
Use ODIN To push with root. I'm going to be trying this later...

Put your phone on USB debugging, plug your USB cable and reboot your phone. You will have the access to your SD instead of the CD and you PC will detect your phone.
Thread moved to General.

I've already posted this in the development area of the forum, but honestly I'm just sitting here hoping someone will reply and I don't think enough people will see my post there. But at any rate, I've been sitting here for the last few hours hoping someone will help me out; I am trying to complete the unlock procedure for my Xoom on my Mac, and for some reason I cannot get the SDK to recognize my Xoom ("adb devices" shows nothing). I'm really hoping someone can give me a tip as to how I can get this otherwise simple procedure to work.
Dumb question, but do you have USB debugging turned on?
Settings -> Applications -> Development
Oh I guess you're trying to do fastboot... nevermind

Maybe not a dumb question, as I do not have it turned on...but thats only because none of the published instructions for unlock mention this. I just went straight to the power down, followed but the power-button-and-down-volume combination to go into the fastboot protocol support.
This is incredibly frustrating, I have no idea what to do. I guess this is what happens when you get your xoom several days after everyone else did.

Are you running adb as root? Try 'sudo adb devices'
I have to do this on linux.

Nope, still nothing showing up. This is ridiculous.
I found something while at work today. You need to go to android.com/filetransfer and download the file transfer application as the Xoom can't be recognized without it. Hope this helps I have used it since launch and it works well.

This is not true at all. The file transfer tool is for transferring files to the Xoom, not interacting with it via adb and fastboot. The Mac should just recognize the device (mine does, and I don't have the file transfer tool installed).
I just realized this is related to the post you made in the Root (or unlocking?) thread. Make sure if you want to see the device in "adb devices" that you have the Xoom booted normally.
If you have it in fastboot mode it should show up in "fastboot devices"
EDIT: Please delete thread, problem solved.
Does anyone have any information on installing twrp from a mac? I have adb installed, but I haven't read anywhere about how to install it using a mac.
I installed TWRP using my Mac with the official Android SDK and platform-tools for Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 installed.
Basically just followed the instructions on the RootzWiki, as recommended by one of the devs: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/
did you install usb drivers (even though they aren't supported by mac osx)? and did you do anything differently because you were using a mac?
thanks for the link.

Sorry man, I don't remember whether or not I installed any USB drivers. If they're not supported, I imagine that I didn't.
But, I don't want to give you misleading info -- so, if you're not sure, I'd say hold off until someone who really knows what they're talking about chimes in. I'm pretty reckless when it comes to this stuff, and I'd hate for you to do something you regret on account of my mouth, ha!
sorry, another question, did the kindle automatically show up in adb with no tinkering, hate to pester you, im just planning everything before i give it a go.
also, did you plug it in while it was on with usb storage enabled?

You don't need any drivers. Adb and fastboot should both work just fine. You might need to edit the ini file though.
Did you have to edit the usb_ini file? if so, how would i go about doing it?

Same as on linux... I changed it, but i'm not sure i needed to.
ok, one final thing ( i promise) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/ is that similar to what you did?
Edit: I've ****ed up and now i'm stuck in fastboot. do you have any ideas how to fix that?
I am determined to downgrade and root my phone on my own, as opposed to paying someone on CL to do it for me. I just moved from Sacramento, CA to Cleveland, OH and I just got my comp unpacked and connected to the internet.
I Just downloaded SDK w/ all of the platform tools, ect. I have also been reading up on ADB and the appropriate commands. My only problem is my comp isnt recognizing the platform tools. it is located at the root of my C:\. Am I missing something? I was going to post in the development forum, but because I am new I can't. Can someone help me out please? I know I am close.
Thanks
How did you typed the command?
First of all be very grateful you can't post in the development sections because if you did it would only of lead to problems with these hungry users that are always ready to flame someone... Anywho...
Follow this guide to downgrade:
Downgrading
Follow this guide to downgrade and root the phone after that you can flash cyanogen if you want or anyother rom that u chose (((HINT: Black Unicorn Resurrected v4.1.1)))
lol, thanks for the heads up.
Does anyone have a link to a thread that shows step by step what to type and what the correct returns would look like?
The all seem to be a little different, and maybe im just an idiot but its pretty confusing seeing so many different ways to accomplish this
Ok, so I am going to try the wiki way to downgrade and root my phone. Hopefully this works.
Thanks for the help

So you have your platform-tools folder in C:\platform-tools? right?
Go into that platform-tools folder under command prompt, and type adb shell, see if it can detect the device.
Try this thread for adb help:

Thanks
Thank you guys for all of your help. It worked! My phone is now downgraded back to Froyo. Next is Root w/ S-Off and Cyanogen Mod.
My usb port is broken, I have verified by booting into fastboot. It will charge my glacier, and the device even displays the mass storage/tether notification, but my pc doesn't react at all. I verified with a brand new laptop running Windows 8 and 7. Different cables. Pda net drivers. Every htcdriver.exe I could find. Simply put, I think I'm lucky it charges at all.
I know visionary doesn't work on 2.3.4. I have tries a million times. Gingerbreak also fails. Without adb or even mass storage I'm desperate. The onlything I can hope for is perhaps, if I used the downgrade method, but instead of using adb I used terminal to push the files and chmodd my heart out. I tried mv /sdcard/fre3vo /data/local/temp but I get an error.
How can I use terminal to set up temproot so I can downgrade, permroot and soff?

I have an idea. Buy a MicroSD adapter.
Your gonna be saved. Also you might need a goldcard to downgrade.

I have an SD card reader, I am more concerned with the lack of adb. Can you link to a guide specific to making a goldcard for the glacier?

It might be in one of the rooting threads or the true permaroot thread.
I can't really help much because I have a HTC panache which has a different rooting procedure.
Try using the HTC supertool
Or does that need a computer...
I'm pretty sure most of if could work with terminal after you get temp root.
Sent from my HTC Glacier
I did find a guide that helped me make one, but I get the main version is older error in hboot. It's my understanding I will first need to change the version # on my phone, for which I need temproot and adb.
Is anyone familiar with goldcards and can help me make one?

I am not a developer but still able to perform tasks with proper instructions. I would like to hire someone that might be willing to assist me to load a stable mod of Android Lollipop or Kit Kat on my Mojo? I at this point do not have allot of faith that Madcatz will be forthcoming with futher updates for the Mojo? Again any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dude, just look at the mojo developer forum here... Already done

Let me rephrase from above....sorry was not to clear. I would like advice on a good stable mod that addresses allot of Mojo's stock software issues. I may need a mentor in the process because my experience stops at side-loading via adb. Ok so I have downloaded the Mods and software. I take it root is a must first? Can Mojo be rooted with adb or is the cable a must? Also is the adb command structure the same or close in Umbuntu Vs Windows? I in a short time have gone from Apple and Microsoft to Linux and Android? For the first time since DOS I have no Microsoft devices in my house The Bad I mostly feel clueless!!! I know this is elementary to you folks and I appreciate all your patience.
Ah ok. Rooting first i believe is needed to get twerp installed. Mojo explain how to root on their own site. I've never worked with adb over a network so I can't help there, I just used the cable and my windows PC, from there the guides in the developer section couldn't be more straight forward but alas you'll maybe need someone more offay on adb rules etc than me to aid you with your adb without the cable etc.

Welcome to freedom!
Do want you can with your hardware and software!
TMK, you need the male-male USB cable, for installing the recovery.
Then from recovery you can install the rom.
TMK, it's the same in windows and linux.
Tip: if your more comfortable on windows, use windows, don't add more complexity
Edit: If your going to pay anyone for help, it should be the dev of the rom @Unjustified Dev
