broken usb port, charge only, need root? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My usb port is broken, I have verified by booting into fastboot. It will charge my glacier, and the device even displays the mass storage/tether notification, but my pc doesn't react at all. I verified with a brand new laptop running Windows 8 and 7. Different cables. Pda net drivers. Every htcdriver.exe I could find. Simply put, I think I'm lucky it charges at all.
I know visionary doesn't work on 2.3.4. I have tries a million times. Gingerbreak also fails. Without adb or even mass storage I'm desperate. The onlything I can hope for is perhaps, if I used the downgrade method, but instead of using adb I used terminal to push the files and chmodd my heart out. I tried mv /sdcard/fre3vo /data/local/temp but I get an error.
How can I use terminal to set up temproot so I can downgrade, permroot and soff?

I have an idea. Buy a MicroSD adapter.
Your gonna be saved. Also you might need a goldcard to downgrade.

I have an SD card reader, I am more concerned with the lack of adb. Can you link to a guide specific to making a goldcard for the glacier?

It might be in one of the rooting threads or the true permaroot thread.
I can't really help much because I have a HTC panache which has a different rooting procedure.
Try using the HTC supertool
Or does that need a computer...
I'm pretty sure most of if could work with terminal after you get temp root.

I did find a guide that helped me make one, but I get the main version is older error in hboot. It's my understanding I will first need to change the version # on my phone, for which I need temproot and adb.
Is anyone familiar with goldcards and can help me make one?

[Q] Creating A Goldcard with sd reader?

Hello everyone,
I've been trying for sometime over the past few days to restore my phone to functionality which I foolishly made useless. I have a TMO Magic with this:
Radio version: 2.22.19.26i.
SPL/hboot version: 1.33.0006.
product: sapphire.
mid: sapp30000.
security: on.
build-mode: ship.
After much incorrect flashing of radios and spls, I've had to restore the original SAPPIMG.nbh to get back to this point, but because I have a sim from my local cell carrier (Fido, up in Canada) without a data plan it won't recognize my sim. The only option I've been able to determine will work and get me back to have a custom recovery, eng spl, and cyanogen mod goodness is to use a goldcard, however I can't use the phone to format/read/write my extra sd which makes this difficult. I've been trying to fool around in linux using an sd card reader and the android sdk, following a guide called How to create a goldcard with Ubuntu Linux (I can't link yet, but that should get you to the right place) However its not clear exactly on how to find the CID from the sdcard using linux, and I've always been a windows person myself so my background knowledge of linux terminal commands is severely lacking. To summarize my question: With my phone in this state, what steps can I take to load a custom recovery? And if this is possible using a Linux box and a card reader, what terminal commands must I use?
Thanks alot for any help
Edit: My bad, I though I posted this in the general forum. I know you guys mods hate that so please move my thread to the general section, or delete it and inform me so I can repost.
If you mean the step no. 6 in this guide: http://www.nazriawang.com/2010/04/how-to-create-goldcard-with-ubuntu.html
then it's an ADB command , and you need to setup adb on your ubuntu first.
Follow this guide to know how to setup adb on Ubuntu:

I have adb set up in linux, but I have the default rom installed and can't get into it to turn on usb debugging. Thats why I'm trying to read the CID of the microsd using a card reader.
Do you have recovery installed ? Try to get your phone into recovery and do the adb command again.
If not then borrow another phone from a friend and use it to get the cid of the card

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if your knowledge is limited you might not want to root your phone.
If you can set up adb, follow simple commands, get the proper drivers installed for your phone to be recognized by your PC, etc...it's a fairly simple process.

Please for the sake of your phone, read about rooting and sut up your PC to use ADB before rooting your phone, or you will be in a world of hurt and looking for more help... I'm sure you are smart enough to do it, just do some research... it is actually a very easy process as everything is layed out step by step... Every thread in development here is worth reading... sorry i'm not here to preach, just help... but def read first so when your ready you'll know what to do, and where to go for help. unfortunately a post like this won't get you much help.
I see what the OP is saying. Verizon's handy work imitates a cd drive when plugged into PC. So putting in commands through cmd doesn't work -- at least it didn't with me, because it's not finding the device. I've got a lot of homework to do myself but Z4 1.3 sideloaded works on DI01 and not on DL09.

Put your phone on USB debugging, plug your USB cable and reboot your phone. You will have the access to your SD instead of the CD and you PC will detect your phone.

[Q] rooting problem: "device not found"

Hi: I'm a long time lurker here on xda-dev, but I'm a first time rooter and this is my first time posting here.
I appreciate any help that I can get, and I will try to be as descriptive as possible so that I don't waste anyone's time. You should know that I am running OS X 10.6.7 (which is 64 bit if that makes a difference). I know that it's possible to root from OS X because I've been in contact with a fellow xda'er about his success with it and my subsequent problems. You will notice from the screenshots that I have a bootcamp partition because I plan on installing Windows 7 at some later time. I think that this may be a driver issue, but really dunno why I would have this driver problem if the person who I know has had success with OS X 10.6.7 didn't have any problems. Not sure if this matters, but I am using this sdcard: http://amzn.com/B003WGJYCY
Things that I've done that you might ask me if I've done:
-Debugging is on (I've toggled it a few times too)
-temprooted with Visionary
-Extracted the Shift file to the root of my sd card
-Checked the md5 of the file in Shift using Terminal emulator (it matches what the guide says it should be)
-Reinstalled the SDK
-Reinstalled Visionary
-Re-Extracted the 'Shift' file to my sdcard.
I am trying to root my shift following this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932153
I have installed Android SDK and for have installed the packages that you can see in this screen shot: http://oi55.tinypic.com/2dvimb6.jpg
I then temprooted using Visionary: After a few failed temproots, I did get a successful temproot, which I am verified by gaining SU with the app Terminal Emulator.
I open up command prompt and do the commands that you can see in this screenshot and as you can see after ./adb shell I get "error: device not found" : http://oi51.tinypic.com/2ztcymt.jpg
As you can see, I can open adb, but the adb shell command returns an error that no device is found. I've also done this: http://oi51.tinypic.com/264t6o5.jpg
So, what do you think?
i forgot to mention that my phone is in charge only mode when I execute ./adb shell
is it connected to a 2.0 USB port?
Also have you tried restarting your phone and mac?
I also saw on another forum that Superuser had to be uninstalled then try temp rooting again.
Also are you keeping an eye on your phone while trying to gain su access? You have to click yes when it asks if you wanna give permission.
You could always try rooting via terminal on the phone. That's what I did, no PC involved.
^ Shift Faced
Thanks for your responses.
I assume these are USB 2.0 ports on my 2010 MacBook Pro. I've uninstalled superuser a couple of times, but when I use terminal emulator to check if I'm temprooted, it shows back up in my apps list.
I have never had the option of giving adb superuser permissions, but yes I have kept my eye on the phone to make sure that the phone wasn't requesting this.
@jesusice -- even though I did the md5 check on the phone, I never thought of rooting the phone through terminal emulator. Would I just follow the directions from the guide, and just input all of the commands into terminal emulator? Anything else I should know about if I try this?

That's what I did. Had been waiting for perm root so long and was so excited I couldn't stand to wait until I got home and just put the commands into terminal on the phone. Just make sure that you input all commands EXACTLY. It was recommended by others to do it from desktop so you can be sure and copy and paste the commands so as to cutdown on errors but I'm not sure why... I can copy and paste from the phone It's just kinda a pita.

Does the phone have to be plugged in the wall or into the computer at all to do this without a computer?

TWRP for mac???

EDIT: Please delete thread, problem solved.
Does anyone have any information on installing twrp from a mac? I have adb installed, but I haven't read anywhere about how to install it using a mac.
I installed TWRP using my Mac with the official Android SDK and platform-tools for Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 installed.
Basically just followed the instructions on the RootzWiki, as recommended by one of the devs: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/
did you install usb drivers (even though they aren't supported by mac osx)? and did you do anything differently because you were using a mac?
thanks for the link.

Sorry man, I don't remember whether or not I installed any USB drivers. If they're not supported, I imagine that I didn't.
But, I don't want to give you misleading info -- so, if you're not sure, I'd say hold off until someone who really knows what they're talking about chimes in. I'm pretty reckless when it comes to this stuff, and I'd hate for you to do something you regret on account of my mouth, ha!
sorry, another question, did the kindle automatically show up in adb with no tinkering, hate to pester you, im just planning everything before i give it a go.
also, did you plug it in while it was on with usb storage enabled?

You don't need any drivers. Adb and fastboot should both work just fine. You might need to edit the ini file though.
Did you have to edit the usb_ini file? if so, how would i go about doing it?

Same as on linux... I changed it, but i'm not sure i needed to.
ok, one final thing ( i promise) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12343-how-to-install-twrp-20-linux/ is that similar to what you did?
Edit: I've ****ed up and now i'm stuck in fastboot. do you have any ideas how to fix that?

No USB - 1.2.1

Hi,
I have been given an old Nook Glowlight that still has 1.2.1 on it.
I have tried NookManager but it won't connect to anything because its still on 1.2.1.
However, I can't update to 1.2.2 because when I connect it to my laptop via USB, nothing shows up in explorer etc.
No idea what to do next!
Does your PC go "bong" when you plug it in?
Do you see anything in Device Manager (devmgmt.msc)?
Is there ADB?
If you can find the old Noogie (for NST) and put it on an SD card you can boot on that.

Nope, it doesn't do anything. I've tried it in a chomebook too, and that didn't see anything.
I'm very new to this, so not too sure what ADB is.

Ok, well, all this stuff is very old to me and I've forgotten some of it.
ADB is the way we transfer files and get access to a shell for all Android devices.
There are tutorials here somewhere, try searching.
CWM and Noogie are two different recovery images that you can run if you can't get what you want done in the regular system image.
I just dusted off my old NST but it needs charging. I forget which recovery I have on it.
I'm sure that @nmyshkin can get you started with the Nook Manager.

I've looked into ADB, but it assumes I can connect to the device via USB... which I can't.
I wonder if I could SSH into it, but again, I wouldn't know where to start.

NookManager has the option to start WiFi and use it to connect via ADB and SSH before doing anything else. You could copy the update over that way.
A perhaps bigger question is the integrity of the port. Can you charge the device? If so then you may just have a driver issue on your PC.
If you want to pursue the ADB angle at least to get started, I recommend the Minimal ADB and Fastboot package. Google that with XDA also and you'll find it.

I tried SSH but the password won't work in order to get access, any ideas, "root" didn't work.
Managed to get it connected to my laptop, I tried an old £1 cable and that worked!!
Can't get it to update to 1.2.2 though. I copy the zip file into the device, put it into sleep mode, but nothing happens apart from the device deleting the file!!
So, I'm getting there.
As I'm in the UK, it looks as though the 1.2.2 update from the US site won't work on a UK device.
Before I go though the process of changing the region, does anyone know where I could download the UK version from?
Thanks.

AFAIK there is no UK update. B&N basically abandoned the non-U.S. firmware devices, suggesting to users that they use them by skipping OOBE. That's a horrible suggestion that leads to decreased battery life and a frantically "busy" system that's always looking for something that's not there. Your best best is the region change followed by the update.

You can manually install it. It will have no choice in the matter.
