Hello all, please excuse the ignorance of this post. I have been an Iphone user from day one of the 2g Iphone, currently having a 3g one. Getting a little tired of the Iphone, and have tried Win Mo on a Touch Diamond (dont hate me but I wasnt a fan of the OS). I have been looking at the vids of Hero on www.coolsmartphone.com, and starting to become quite taken. Was just curious if anyone out there is an Iphone user switching to Android OS, in particular the Hero. Really just looking for some opinions, and I am not trying to start an Iphone haters thread, just looking for some advice.
Although I'm not a huge dan of the iPhone, I much prefer its software to Android. I'll set aside the iTunes store and bandwagon effects (when people develop for mobile, they develop for iPhone) for now.
I feel that Android has too many buttons. There's an end, home, and back button. I'm not always sure which one to press. Also, it has multitasking without and inbuilt task manager. I don't know how to quit vs. hide an app. I think its app specific.
That said, the Hero software is much better than the standard Android build.
I was given an Ion at Google I/O, but I've hardly touched it. The iPhone, even with its own limitations, is still a better phone.

I'm not quite an iPhone user, just an iPod touch. All I can really say is that the iPhone has a lot of great apps, browsing and calendar is great, as well as other features. I've never owned an Android device but I'm looking at the Hero too and like how customizable it is. I guess I just want to try something different.

I moved to Android yesterday and there is no doubt, Android is light years ahead of the current version of winmob, but, and there is a but, when you are so used to something, even good change can be a little frustrating. My point? If you use and like iphone, and remembering (if we are honest) the whole iphone experience is more visually and aesthetically appealing than winmob (with whatever rom you fancy ) ...and in a lot of areas, more functional, then I would imagine you as a long term iphoner would find the journey to hero/android a little traumatic.
You might like it for a day, then think 'but on iphone I did this', etc.
So, in summary, I have made the leap as winmob was just becoming too dated and for me, the nuances are acceptable but for someone from an already decent OS, you may think, after a while, I prefer where I was.

Free app, tasKiller - works great for shutting down running apps, just put an icon on your homescreen and 2 taps is all it takes.
I was suffering major app slowdown before installing this, sometimes multiple instances of the same app were running and slowing things down, this app is a god send!

Although I will agree with some of your points othese I wont.
I find that andriod is more asthetically pleasing than the iPhone and when you state that the poster would think "the iphone did this" they will also think wow my iphone didnt do this...
To the original poster, why dont you take a trip to t-mobile and try their phone before you buy, only you will know what you prefer.
I used to be an iphone user and hated it after about a week, the main issue for me seemed to be multitasking, amazing how much I use that.
Anyways just my opinion, each to their own, but dont discard the Hero nor should you leap into buying one, read, read, read and try in store.
Certainly, do not discount the Hero, it is a beautiful piece of tech.
If it helps you any, I kept my Hero for 3 days, then returned to the Kaiser. I have sent the Hero back.
Now, is the Kaiser better? As a tech experience, NOT a chance, the Hero is much better. As a functional tool, the Kaiser is more (for me).
Example, it syncs locally, completely flawlessly. The Satnav apps on it are mature and established, if truth also be told, I found an onscreen keyboard not a patch on a hardware one. These are key reasons I need my phone.
Will I go back to Hero? I would have thought very likely. It needs to mature a little, then I will be back in. I will still miss the hardware keyboard though. Pressing a screen is not a patch on pressing buttons. But as an iphone user, that will not be any issue for you.

But I just wanted to try something different and the Hero looked promising with the Android and mainly what HTC has added to it. Hopefully it doesn't let me down! If I do miss the iPhone too much then I'll just upgrade in 9 months once my contract finishes!

Hahahaha. Whenever i see somone with an Iphone its like Whatever. Its like so not 2009. It just got old for me. I sold my Magic to get a Htc Hero:
I had a G1, sold it to my friend from work, bought a Magic, played with it for 1-2 weeks. Sold it and now im getting a Hero soon!
As much as it hurts to say it, my Vibrant is really starting to lose it's charm.
When I first got it, the hardware was great, and the phone ran perfectly. Now after having it for over a month, this is what I'm starting to see:
Lack of life in the market. I see no new innovative games or apps. All the cool apps I downloaded have been on the market for a while.
Lack of development here. There hasn't been much progress in developing in cool ROMS that would make a huge difference on my phone.
The phone is becoming more slow, and not as fluid. Even the 1 or 2 second delays just bothers me to be honest.
Lastly, lack of initiative from Samsung. I know we have all been complaining about Froyo, but it just boggles my mind how little Samsung has been paying attention to it's existing customers. I hope it comes back to bite them sometime in the near future.
These things are becoming more and more apparent to me, and every time I look at and use my phone, I don't feel like I am using a solid, fluid phone, that I can try a lot of new things with in the future.
This is not a complaining thread, so flamers - gtfo.
I just wanted to see if anyone out there sees the same things I am seeing, and if there really is not potential left.

But I want to point out some flaws in your logic ...
Lack of life in the Market? Maybe you should change what you are searching for our use some alternative markets, as there are tons of new apps ...
Lack of dev here? Ummmm I have had like 7 diff custom roms on my phone and had it less than 2 months ..
phone slow? I am sure that is caused by all the crap you installed, that really is the only thing that slows the phones down, is having 17 million things running.
Not gonna defend Samsung, but just so the info is correct, Samsung sent 2.2 to all the carriers at the same time, so actually it is Tmobile that is slowing it down, not that makes the wait any less painful ...
And the big thing I wanted to say is ending your post by saying "flamers -GTFO" is like dumping a gallon of gasoline on yourself and running into a burning building and expecting not to catch fire , smarter thing would have been to not even post.
But.. all in all, it's a phone. There can only be only so many cool games for your phone. Great games for consoles and PCs don't come around all the time either. Sometimes you have to wait years for something great to come around again that's a "must have." We are talking about a phone. It's mobile, has some cool stuff to play and do on it... but it's still a phone. It makes and recieves calls, text, pictures, data, etc., lets you browse the web, and other cool little things. It's not, nor ever will be a desktop replacement. No mobile device is perfect. If you want something better, try making it yourself, otherwise, just deal with what we have and work with it.
The "newness" is probably wearing off, but that happens with anything.

I can complain and nitpick with the best of them, but my personality sort of forces me to put things into perspective.
Firstly, I'm extremely pleased with my Vibrant. Though GPS at times has a mind of it's own with the post JI2 fixes it performs adequately for me while driving. I'm sure there are those who have a vested interest in the GPS being more reliable and accurate to be sure, I'm just not one of those people.
Getting beyond the GPS there is very little I can complain about. Among my friends there are a wide variety of smartphones. Several iPhones (3gs, 4), EVO 4G, several 3g Slides, several more MT3G's, and two friends with "other" Galaxy S phones, a Fascinate and an Epic 4G. I come from a past filled with a Behold II, a G1, a Palm Centro, and an original iPhone. And this phone is way better than any phone I've ever had and generally better than most of my friends phones I've played with.
In a forum like this one we have a tendency to get "tunnel vision". Forums like this exist for users to help and inform one another, but through this minor snags can get blown up into major headaches. I'd invite anyone angsty about the Vibrant to go see how the other half lives over in the HTC, Motorola, and LG threads and see that it's relatively a bed of roses for us in comparison. At least that's my take given my casual peeks into the forums for the other new smartphones out.
This doesn't mean I'm giving Samsung or T-Mobile a "get out of jail free" card. Both Samsung *AND* T-Mobile have horrible histories when it comes to updating Android devices, either in a timely manner or even AT ALL.
T-Mobile, to it's discredit has yet to have a single successful (meaning the update wasn't pulled at some point for problems it created) OTA of any android device since 2009.
From looking at Samsung's handling of the Galaxy S, given a cursory glance at it's own wonky revisioning system, it's no wonder that it's taken far too long for 2.1 to get fully fixed and 2.2 to progress beyond beta. Releasing this platform on a ridiculous amount of carriers, whilst simultaneously trying to cater to those carriers customization demands has obviously led to an extremely fragmented development process for us. A victim of runaway success, or a victim of their crappy development processes, it's difficult to say.
Either way as consumers we should be adamant that T-Mobile and Samsung take responsibility for their products. But, at the same time, we should step back and realize this is a smartphone and ask ourselves if it's doing what we want it to do.
If it is, then take a deep breath and count to ten. If it isn't, then take a look at how the rest of the smartphone universe is really functioning before you jump ship, only to be disappointed all over again.
Some of peoples ire here is buyers remorse, focused and whipped into extremes because of where you happen to be focusing your attention. Do what I'm about to do, which is pick up my Vibrant and call some friends so we can all go unplug with some tasty sushi and sake!

Well said. The only thing that bugs me with the Vibrant is how long its taking to get the GPS fix out but other than that I am 99% satisfied.

I completely agree with every point you made! It kind of being a let down, coming from having 2G, 3G, 3GS iPhones...I really sometimes miss the availability of all apps on the apple app store...HOWEVER...I think Andriod is going to surpass Apple app store and OS, just give it a little bit of time and you are going to be much happier.... I remember having the same type of frustrations when the 2G came out, specially not being able to forward messages, copy and past, lack of updates....etc... and plus the drop calls of iphone/att.. So give some time for Samsung and Andriod to grow and I think all of us going to be much happier with Froyo.

The Galaxy S has never really been "fluid."
Scrolling has a "jerky" feel, which is immediately apparent if you compare it to the iPhone.
The EVO is also noticeably smoother than the Samsung (although still not as fluid as the iPhone).

The "jerky" feel is due to the OS rather than the hardware as the vibrant has an equal or faster processor than the iPhone according to Anandtech review not to mention a much faster GPU. Also in the review it called the SGS as the fastest android even after using the EVO previously. I agree that the iPhone has the smoothest scrolling as I used to have the 2G and even on that, scrolling was extremely smooth.

This. I bought my phone day one as soon as the store opened, and I still love everything about it, especially now that JI2 has fixed my GPS.
With all the little quirks and mishaps i've had with this device (none of which have been a deal breaker for me) I am still very pleased i purchased this phone. To me it just seems to be getting better and better. Yes just like anyone else I would love to have Froyo and would love for my GPS to work 100% all the time but that is just a chance you take with technology and new devices. You learn to cope and deal. Really isnt that hard to grasp.
Only because it runs rock solid for me, I don't need to do anymore tweaks or anything.
Hoping Froyo brings in more developers and makes things a little more fun.
Vibrant too is my first android phone and also my very first smart phone. Although, I have owned 3 different iPod Touches, so that at least gives me some perspective of how a "smart" Mobile OS should be such as Android, iOS, etc.
I am very please with the hardware, and Android in general. However, coming from iOS, android does felt short in terms of upgrade path. ROM from independent developers are great but the lack of proper channel for official OS update really is the "nail in the coffin" kinda of thing.
With the exception of iOS 4 which excluded 2g, 3g iPhone; Apple users can expect an update on a timely yearly basis which usually adds features and bug fixes. It just makes you feel better when you know that an official update is definitely coming. We are kinda stuck in the situation where we are depended on Samsung to push for the update. Sigh.
Other than that, I am really glad I made the switch, the notification bar is my all time favor and of course Multitasking.
Samsung has dropped the ball in a lot of ways. I am inclined to say that the superior Android maker is HTC--just my opinion. Nevertheless, this phone its really growing on me, perhaps because of all of its nuances. I have learned a lot trying to mod the phone and create my own fixes. The hardware on this phone is rather amazing, so I know that if I get the software right I will love it. The first glimpse of that was when I installed Bionix 1.3. If you do not have it, then go get it in the dev thread. 1.4 should be releasing soon. Bionix has rejuvenated my interest in the Vibrant.

Why do people expect everything to come out fast by big companies? Motorola's wireless division, which is probably still small compared to when they were big in the past, only concentrates on Android, thus faster releases. HTC has been in the ball game since day 1 and is basically purely concentrating on Android until WP7 comes out. Samsung, well, I don't even know. There division makes all kinds of phones and working on different OSs while HTC and Motorola are concentrating only on Android. Oh, everyone should know how slow T-mobile is with updates. Really, they aren't the fastest ones around. With T-mobile, it's always been quality over speed.
Anyways, stop making pointless complaint topics, we don't need any more to clutter this forum. That's what I'm basically trying to say.
So, I have been playijg around with my new Nexus S for a few hours and have everything loaded up like before. It's an awesome phone, just not surs ifbit is a $500 upgrade from the Nexus One that I currently own. My biggest issue is the limilted memory... with 12 gigs of music, my work files and others- I think I will run out soon, I am guessing they come out with a 32 gig before long. I will hang on to this and see how my N1 performs with GB. I really don't need a front facing camera or NFC chip. But I must admit, this thing is great and really flies! Anyone else having second thought?
It's disappointing that Google is going the Steve Jobs way trying to control what we can or can't do with our phones. I prefer my Nexus one 1000 times over this mediocre-half-ass attempt of a phone. I'll wait for Google to try again next year and bring back the tracking ball, memory slot, and a metallic casing instead of the plasticky one.

Yeah, I don't really see the Google Walled Garden. You'll have to explain.
I am almost positive there will be a Nexus-M by Motorola, they really want in on the Nexus name I have heard. Might be called the Nexus-3.0 and released after Honeycomb comes out, but that's just rumors I have heard. I thought Moto was gonna get the Nexus-2 before Samsung got involved, so I am sure they are working on a Nexus phone for release in 2011.
Right now, today, the Nexus-S is the best Android phone on the market, if you want pure Android, with no carrier bloatware, and no branding crap like Sense or Touchwiz, and you just need to root this phone to make it bad ass, no real need for a custom rom like C 6.1.
I would not want the first dual core phone to market anyways, let them work out the kinks and bugs first, and I'll take the second round of dual core phones. Will give them time to really optimize Android for dual core after the 2nd gen is out.
I think the OP was asking if you have actually bought the phone are you having second thoughts.
To go from a Nexus One to a Nexus S and call it an upgrade is an oxymoron. To pay money and get a phone with less features is unwise. Gingerbread is coming to the Nexus One anyway.

If you're just whining because the Nexus S doesn't have all the features that you want, then please stop. Go somewhere else and start your own thread, where you can complain all you want that the phone doesn't have a Jet Pack or a Rocket Launcher.

It's hardly the same thing. Sure, Google may have taken out a couple features that you find important, but they are definitely not controlling anything. These decisions ONLY affect the Nexus S. The MANY other Android phones are not affected. So if you want a trackball and expandable memory, you can very well have that. Just buy a different phone. Apple on the other hand, prevents this freedom since the iPhone is the only available iOS phone.

This is a forum for people to share their opinions. If you really like the Nexus S, you shouldn't get mad if others don't. Go buy one, enjoy it and move on. But try to understand that different people use their phones differently.
For me, the lack of SD storage is a deal breaker. Like the OP, I have easily over 12GB of music that I load on my phones. I don't want to carry an MP3 player on top of my cellphone. Nexus S's lack of SD slot leaves me with very limited space for my other data (work emails, apps, pictures and clips that I shoot, and so on). Having said that, I could see how this wouldn't be an issue for someone who doesn't fill up their phone.
Secondly, no matter how you spin it, the hardware is not a noticeable step ahead from the Nexus One, or the myTouch 4G. The S has a 1GHz processor and so do a whole slew of phones by Samsung and other manufacturers.
Thirdly, the Nexus S doesn't utilize TMO's HSPA+ network. Again, this may not be a big deal for somebody who doesn't do heavy data on their phone. But I do, and I happen to live in an area where TMO's "4G" network works extremely well. I definitely consider going from HSPA+ back to "3G" a downgrade. You may not share that view...
Basically, the only selling point for the S is Gingerbread. Based on certain information I have, the MT4G is highly likely to get a 2.3 update on the other side of the year. A minor OS update isn't enough to convince me to buy this phone.
As for your "upgrade" comment, technology is expected to get better over time. It's just the way it works. Google doesn't need to hold a press conference event to tell us whether this phone is an upgrade over a phone released nearly a year ago. That is expected to be the case.

I think the Nexus phones are Google's iPhone. It is untouched by Carrier bloatware, and untouched by phone brand UI's. This is the "pure" Android experience, sort of how iPhone is the "pure" Apple phone experience, but they only have one phone anyways, so sort of hard to compare, but you get my drift.
Is the Nexus-S gonna be the top dog hardware, no. But it will always be up to date with the current OS, and not really needing any custom roms, just a root. Sure in two months from now, there will be dual cores etc...but they will also have Moto blur, or TouchWiz, or Sense UI, and then have Verizon Bing search, or ATT crap ware. I like the virgin Nexus, even if she is a little slower
Every Christmas time there will be a new Nexus, running the latest OS, sort of like every summer there is a new iPhone. I hope this keeps going.

Agreed, I would not want to be beta tester on the first gen of dual core phones, could be buggy, or could not offer any performance gains until the Android OS is totally ready for it . Now a dual core Nexus development phone would be nice.

This phone is nice, but I really don't c much performance upgrade over my Nexus One. When I tried to watch some flash videos, it was just as choppy as my Nexus One...I was very disappointed. I think right before the remorse period is over I will return the phone and go back to my N1.
I visited Best Buy during lunch and got to play with a demo unit. The first impression is that the phone feels cheap. Yes, we've read about this many times in reviews, but I don't think one realizes it until one has it in their hands. It feels like a toy. And for whatever reason, it feels cheaper than the Vibrant; maybe because of expectations (Nexus branding and all)? I don't know. In some ways, the Vibrant's cheapness still feels like quality.
Granted, I was only using it for no more than 5 minutes, I was quite underwhelmed. Gingerbread sure is smooth, though.
Driving home with mine right now. 30 day return policy with no restocking fee. Ill see how gb does on my nexus one also and if I find any buyers. If gb flies on n1 and no buyers ill return. Can't wait to get home and charge it then wait till its done before I use. Fffuuuuuuu

I too am underwhelmed with the device so far. Oh yes it is fast and smooth but I am getting Fc's and some have to do with the GPS which does concern me. My GPS has been spotty so far and I still recall the torture with the Vibrant's GPS. Also Market has not updated to the new market. I thought GB would include that for sure(perhaps it is not actually released yet although I have it on my Vibrant. I do like the feel of the phone though. It is heavier to me than the Vibrant or the MT4G

If you're getting FC's out of the box, do a full reset of the phone. If it keeps doing it even afterwards, then exchange it.
This is my first Samsung device and I disagree with the folks saying that it feels cheap or like a toy. My only complaint about it's build quality after having played with it for the last several hours is that I wish they had used some rubberized texture coating or something because the phone is pretty slick.
I'm sure I'll get used to it though and adjust my grip accordingly.

I am a current n1 owner rooted and all that good stuff, but usually before i purchase something I look it up online and see what the deal is.
I checked out the specs it looks pretty nice(just as good as evo4g droidx desirehd)
Yeah each phone has its pros and cons, but the nexus s is ****ing SICK I was in both verizon and sprint stores yesterday and checked out the samsung phones, for they all use the same screen and the quality of the devices are amazing. Yeah there lightweight and not made of a metallic material but no1 says the that about exotic cars being light weight either haha idk bad analogy maybe.

Still disappointed about the video recording situation and i understand its a software issue instead of hardware which makes me very happy so no worries on that front.
Also I use my nexus one with the stock SD card which is only 4 gigs and I think that is plenty enough for me and i only fill it up from nandroid backups haha idk this is just my view on things and for those who are uncertain about buying a nexus s. Def going to bestbuy tommorow to buy me one of these then ima buy a oem housing for my n1 and new battery and give it to my brother (his first android phone) he will def love it just as much as i did.
But the matter of the fact is that i dont see why people say its a let down when google obviously knew what the phone would be they said they worked with every department of samsungs engineer team to make the phone so these specs are going to be as up to date as the nexus one was and still is.
These dual core phones although are probably going to be ****ing epic and stuff, but like honestly what are we all going to use these dual cores for? saving battery would probably be the biggest pro but like dual cores processors wtf are we gonna do play some pc games or render movies? idk thats just me !

As an admitted Apple fan who's had an iPhone from V1, up to the iPhone 4, and;
As a guy who's tried Android - Droid X, Samsung Fascinate,
The Nexus S is the best Android phone I've ever used. There are things I still love about the iPhone 4: retina display, build quality (use of metal, scratch-resistant front and rear, amazing battery life), fantastic app selection and peripheral choices galore.
That said, I am really enjoying the Nexus S. The design aesthetic is equal to the latest iPhone in my opinion - the all-black face, the lack of logos on the front face, the curved glass (which looks great and feels great). Gingerbread is more aesthetically pleasing than previous Android versions. The customizability inherent in Android is nice. The app store/marketplace is getting better although there are still glaring omissions vs. the iPhone store (CNN news, for example).
Hardware-wise, I greatly prefer the Nexus S to the Droid X or Samsung Fascinate (Verizon). Better aesthetic, better feel when held in hand or by the face. I wish Samsung had made the back cover out of higher-quality, less scratch-prone materials. Software-wise, it's totally worth it to get faster major updates from Google than to wait for the carrier and device OEM to get their build out. Also, the lack of carrier crapware is much, much better for the consumer.
I'd like Android to combine its great notification system with on-screen notifications when the device is locked a la iPhone (e.g. push news alerts). I'd like a more elegant folder design a la iOS. The new cut & paste and text selection is nice, but I'd like consistency across ALL apps in this regard a la iOS. I'd like a unified inbox for communications from various sources. I'd like them to fix the annoying field bug when adding contacts from Map listings. Android still lags iOS in the clever use of multi-touch gestures across the OS, and it needs to address this. I should be able to swipe and delete like iPhone, vs. long press and menu select, etc. Android also needs its own form of eye candy sprinkled more liberally throughout the OS. Gingerbread's "display off" emulation of a cathode ray tube is a small step in the right direction. The OS should have a lot more of this compelling eye candy to meet or exceed the fit and finish of iOS, but it has to be "uniquely Android" or it will seem like a poor facsimile.
Hardware: I'd like Samsung to keep what they're doing, but up the quality of build materials, particularly on the back of the device. The Nexus S is a big step beyond the Galaxy S design, in my opinion, and better materials like the Nexus One had would go a long way.
In a nutshell, this is the first Android phone that I prefer at times over my iPhone 4. But not always. iPhone still has the advantage over "Pure Google" in Hardware build (some), software elegance (more), and ecosystem app and peripheral choices (most). Vs. the "non-pure Google" phones, it's not even close. People may complain that Apple is "closed" but at least they focus on what's good for the end user. The choices that are made by OEMs and carriers in the Android universe are rarely good for end users, and this is on display with the superior Nexus line of products.

I believe its hardware, not software. But some day can be hacked with reduced FPS, just like Nexus One
All Google and Samsung knew is that they dont need to spend money on building the phone because it already existed for 6 month. They had lots of time to test Gingerbread on this hardware, and things like lack of Gorilla, LED, Bluetooth 3.0, SD-card, make me think they ran out of parts and used whatever was available at the time.....and in the end the phone is close to $600 bucks with tax in USA and even more in EU.
for me it's hardware deficiency lack of microSD support, no Bluetooth 3.0, the software is clean which is perfect IMO
I think people that are coming from other phones and maybe some Nexus One owners are happy with NS (I would be), But people with Galaxy S line phones (as myself) look at Nexus S as a downgrade. If NS was FREE or maybe $50 bucks, then I would give it some thought, but for $600 there is nothing to think about. Ps. I dont use FFC, flash/flashlight is pretty much the only positive hardware I see in NS.

It isn't a downgrade at all if you're sick of waiting for Samsung and/or T-Mobile to deliver the newest and latest Android. Not only that but open-sourced kernels, Samsung Vibrant (and other Galaxy S phones) relies on leaks and the final version has not been released. Who knows when they will become available.

2.3 runs fine on my captivate. I dont have any of the issues you are talking about. I read that a lot of people are having issues with the new screen. It may not be all 2.3 related.

I was sick of waiting......not anymore. I really dont care about official 2.2 because leaked Froyo for Vibrant is 100% fast and stable (with Nero and Voodoo). As far as 2.3 vs 2.2, for me they are the same...2.3 featuring looks and animations outside and game optimization under the hood. I already have all Ginger looks and animations, and i dont play games. I would put it this way, Touchwiz 2.2 has MUCH more useful features then 2.3
PS. It looks like Vibrants in USA officially get shipped with Froyo already. EDIT: ****ing Samsung switched the dates again
yes, waiting for 2.2 was an agony for SGS owners, now that most devices are on 2.2 it'll be another big challenge to get 2.3 for the rest of the SGS line up.
and it's true SGS takes to long to receive any Official release of 2.2/2.3 all 2.2 and now 2.3 that people got their hands on, was all leaked out or ported from other phones.
that's the only positive thing i like about the NS

The Nexus S hardware is not bad but it is not any better than what is already on the market. I think people expected the Nexus line of phones to move Android forward, the way the Nexus One did and the Nexus S did not do that. The hardware just did not move the bar like the Nexus One did.
The only advantage to the Nexus S is the software (getting updates first and pure Android). This is enough for me to consider getting one in addition to my G2, but many people won't think this is a big enough difference to justify the purchase.
2. People always expect more when they pay more, I would bet more people paid full price for their Nexus S than other phones. Higher expectations = more complaints.

I have seen numerous HTC fans spew crap about Samsung for updates and build quality issues. For example, many state that the plastic build quality is of very low quality, of which is very opposite in reality in which in plastic is actually very solid. I have dropped my Vibrant many times and it still looks like new, can't say that about metal which dents and gets dinged. As for updates, blame your carriers. The international versions got updates several months before the carrier versions.
Here are some quotes from some obvious HTC users.

The first quote is spot on. The lag was unbearable, the GPS inop, and support was nonexistent. Samoled was nice until you seen the jagged text. Battery life was also terrible. The phones are usable now, after 3-4 updates (updates that were bricking phones and frying storage, mind you) but the GPS is still borderline useless for lots of people and it still lags more than a Samsung jack wm6.5 device (by a long shot).
I they do better with the s2 good for them, but they are indefendable irt these phones. Hype can only get you so far...

Way to read my first paragraph. Support was due to the carriers, not Samsung directly. And I still do not understand what this lag is, even on JFD I had installed 30 apps and still little to no lag for me.
And the jagged text? have both a HD7 and a HD2 with me no, and I see no difference worth speaking of between the screens. I do 20/20 vision.
Battery life terrible? Wait till you see the desire HD or thunderbolt. The GS2 has also been reported to have good battery life.
Have you even tried a custom rom N8ter? CM7 nevers lags, even when underclocked to 400 mhz. And as to that HTC phones work better out of the box statement, we are on XDA. Hell, many of those HTC fanboys wanted the Sensation due to the dev attention they believed it would get, even with a locked bootloader.
I don't mod my phones and nor should anyone be expected to. The performance of the phone now is usable. Where was cyanogen in august to December 2010, though?

Bunch of excuses. What you quoted is true.
Text on a samoled panel is more jagged than on others. Its a side effect of the pen tile pixel arrangement used. Its very noticeable when you have white text on a black background - at least for me it is.
These panels also suffer from burnin more than any other screen type I've used.
Support from carriers does not help when the hardware is faulty (gps)'or the device has design flaw like rfs. Samsung can push out an update that replaces rfs. They choose not to. They should have recalled phones with known hw gps falls but.they just blamed it on the users andbgave them a useless tool to rwser some setting many of us never touched to begin with.

This is the fourth vibrant I've had, gps was piss poor, and I was able to get new ones because of it. This newest handset has really good locks. I like the phone even after the gps problems. I bought an otter box and some ghost armor. With the case it feels solid. I know not everyone will get a case to make the phone feel built but it's nice. Id buy another samsung device no problem. I like the feel and ease of use.

I have to agree with N8ter. This will probably be my last Samsung device. I told myself from the start I'd never get another Samsung device, but it was all Asurion had to replace my water-damaged, but beloved N1. Ugh. I wish I had waited for them to get something else.
The lag KILLS me! I want to throw the damn phone against the wall or some concrete almost daily. Samsung could have definitely kept RFS to their damn selves. Even the browser lags on me most times.
I get a bunch of missed calls even when I have full coverage. The only way I'd even know I would miss them is if my girlfriend would text me to pick up my phone or check Google Voice for missed calls.
The GPS... yeah. Go back to the comment about me wanting to throw my phone against the hardest surface available, and multiply that by 100. The GPS has almost made me late for several appointments (job interviews, drug testing, etc.), and actually gotten me lost in my own native home of Atlanta. I don't get how the hell the GPS can possibly think I'm somewhere .5 miles away then where I am actually am.
I absolutely hate how it doesn't have an LED. NoLED does the job, but isn't really what I would call a suitable replacement.
I also hate how it looks like an iPhone. If I wanted an iPhone lookalike, I would have went out and bought an iPhone. I am really tired of people always asking me, "Is that an iPhone?"
I also despise TouchWiz. I despise manufacturer skins in general, but touchwiz REALLY grinds my gears.
One of the very few good redeeming qualities about this damn phone is the amount of internal storage, but which I barely make use of b/c of wanting to keep all of files stored on my external. I also like the dev tools they have, such as Odin. It's saved me a couple of times from bad flashing and just plain operator error. I also like how easy it was to install the front facing camera. But, then again, why the hell should I have to install it in the first place?
Overall, I am not a happy camper with Samsung. Once I start this new job, or get my financial aid refund check , it's definitely time for a new phone, and it sure as hell won't be Samsung. I was thinking about giving this phone to my girlfriend to replace her T-Mobile Tap, but I don't know if I want to torture her that much.
P.S. This is after using custom roms. God forbid how horrid my experience would have been on stock. I think I might have really thrown it in oncoming traffic.
its obvious that you're stuck in your mindset, so why even start a thread? its useless. coming from an owner of both brands, each have pros and cons. my epic and inspire both have poor battery life. inspire is smooth while the epic lags. furthermore, my epic has better overall display, but the inspire looks better picture wise, not contrast or color, quality. my point is, phones appeal to one person or another. no need for a useless thread targeting one manufacturer.

I am quite satisfied with my vibrant coming from an HD2 NAND.
It is quite fast and has a much more pleasant desing than most other HTC phones.
Only problem is the HORRIBLE gps.

Most of my complaints might have been stated already, but clearly the more times it's stated proves it's not just isolated incidents. I'm not basing my phone off of any loyalty. I'm basing it off of the fact that it frustrates the hell out of me. And I assure you it's not user error. I've been dealing with computers and electronics and modding etc since I was 7 and am a computer science major, so I assure you it's not user error. Every single one of those problems has persisted since I used a custom rom, and who the hell are you to tell me I shouldn't own an Android device? I know all about custom roms and have been using them since I got my first smartphone, the HTC wizard. If you think Samsung is better than HTC, that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinion. I, however, could care less about another Samsung phone ever again. I really regret the day my Nexus One fell in that pot of water.

I like the sgs line. Sure, there not the best out there, but as a rom chef and themer, I can honestly say this this phone is the best for that. Almost unbrickable. Don't forget, with HTC and moto(dont quote me on moto), they don't have Odin. That is a HUGE selling point for me. I would be pissed if I spent $x on a HTC phone, and had a bad flash. Now its a door stop. Just my .2.

Lol. Quite frankly I don't give a damn WHAT you believe. I don't have to prove myself to some anonymous person on the internet. You can eat **** and die for all I care. I know it's not user error. Even if I don't have the know how to go in and fix Samsung's mistakes myself, yet, I know how to read carefully and apply others' fixes. So go troll someone else. Like I said, it's your OPINION that Samsung is the better company, and that's fine. But, as for myself, I know I won't be giving Samsung another chance.

it's a loyalty thing, you know the last HTC device i owned was actually an I-Mate. still to this day I remember how damn awesome that thing was. swivel screen, Large Keyboard, solid PLASTIC construction, stereo speakers, 3.5 jack. etc. OS blew, think it was windows mobile umm 5? i know i ran 6.5 on it before i upgraded.
this phone was a beast. and the last HTC built device i ever owned as i switched to nokia and sony Ericsson smart phone devices, somehow i ended up with a samsung i900 Omnia (gsm) and have stuck with samsung since.

I am commited to buying a usa sgs2. Why with the terrible support we've had? I truely think that samsung has learned their lesson. Releasing the source so soon after the phones launch is amazing. I have also read just about every review and watched every video. Its exactly the experience I want.
Even with all the problems of the sgs... I still love it. The reason why I know I love it is cause I am currently using a mytouch 4g. Its great that I can overclock it to 1.5ghz. Frankly I am really starting to miss my vibrant. I Love that phone. With its ****ty gps and its laggy ass stock ui and its horrible support. I am after all A tinker at heart!

A friend of mine still uses this as his daily phone, he managed to preserved it all this long in a mint condition too
