Can't mount phone as drive after installing CELB 4.1 Froyo - Droid Eris Android Development

I installed 4.1 today and when I plug the phone in to the computer it doesn't give me the option to mount it.
The computer finds the phone but will not read from it.

Are you using a generic usb cable or the one that came with your Eris.
When I use a generic usb cable, 95% of the time I can see the phone install but it is completely unaccessible as a drive. This happens with every rom including the htc stock 2.1

you really should post rom related issues in the rom thread

I've never had a problem mounting my phone with my monoprice or ebay usb cables. I was about to flash celbfroyo 4.1 though.
Sent from my ERIS using XDA App

What OS are you using?
When you say the computer finds the phone, is that just a notification? Or is it listed with your drives or your devices? Does the phone recognize that it was USB connected in your notification shade?

I am running CELB 4.1. I just connected using a cable I have used before for this. Two notifications were added - one telling me that USB debugging is connected, and another telling me that "USB is connected - Select to copy files to/from your computer". Tapping that notification brings up the USB connected screen, with a button to turn on USB storage. Tapping the button mounts the SD card to my computer.
This is pretty much the way that CELB has always worked for me.

Thanks Doogald
Must have missed seeing that when I plugged it in.
Thanks a lot working like a champ now !
Sorry I posted this thread in the wrong place won't happen again

USB Storage mode?

Hi all.
Is there a way to access the FAT32 partition on the SD through the USB cable (the same way I used to do with the Magic)?
Disabling the USB debug mode won't help!
Thanks.
Yes, just plug it in and there should be a notification asking if you want to 'mount' the storage. When you mount the storage it will become visible to your PC just as if it was a usb memory stick.
so for the idiot's guide (not calling you and idiot, but you clearly have not read the manual).
When you plug the usb cable in, at the top of the phone screen there should be a usb sign.
drag the notification bar down.
there should be a line for usb stating click to mount.
Click.
A popup will ask you do you want to mount, click 'mount'
DONE!
Please remember to unmount when disconnecting. do this either by ejecting the drive in windows OR the same method as mounting but the popup will ask you to unmount.
but again again again this is in the manual/.
And before I get any H8's saying you need to mount to access the manual, its also on the HTC site. so Raspberry to you.
It simply doesn't work. I did read TFR!
OK.
Are you trying this at work? It's possible through a windows reg change to disable the usb ports, my place does this but can be fixed with a simple reg script.
Have you another usb drive to try in the port you are using?
Just checking that your connecting it to the back of the computer as they are the main ports (ones directly connected to your mobo) as sometimes the front ones wont work if not connected/enabled.
If you do have another device/drive and this works in the port then bad times.

It would be more useful if you could tell us what it does do, rather than that it simply doesn't work.
1. When you plug the USB cable in, do you get "USB Connected" notification? If so, when you bring this up, do you get the option to mount the SD card?
2. Have you tried a different USB cable and/or connecting the phone to a different PC?
3. Have you tried with a different SD card in the phone?
4. Have you repartitioned your SD card in any way? (i.e. added swap, ext3 whatever?)
Regards,
Dave
1. No, I don't get any notification at all.
2. Different cables, same result. USB memory stick and USB hard drive work on the very same port.
3. Yes, same result.
4. Yes, I did the "usual" 3 partitions.
5. I'm running MoDaCo 2.1
FIXED while troubleshooting!
6. I switched to my Nokia DKE-2 cable and it magically worked.
7. The old cables used to work with ADB but not in storage mode.
8. All three cable can charge the phone.
9. I presume a problem with the cable, but have no idea about the nature.
Anyway, the thing was really not working at all. Please give first a look to my first post. I already tried a number of things before posting.

Just as a matter of interest, did you try with the cable that came with the phone? At the very least that should be working too.
Thus far, I've had no problems with 3 or 4 different USB cables, but I have seen issues like this in the past where cables didn't have all pins connected.
Regards,
Dave
I've lost my original cable some thousands kilometers away from home.
This is why I got using my digital camera and USB hard drive min-USB cables.
I got no problem so far apart of not being able to mount the phone's SD.
I presume a weird wiring problem. Maybe this thing can be put in a FAQ.

Mount issue

Hey peeps, My hero has been acting up for the last couple days and the weird thing about it is that I have not done anything new to it. I wanted to flash the new fresh rom and when I connected the phone via usb to my laptop it just charges. The phone does not get recognized by the laptop nor does it ask me if I want to mount the drive. I am running windows 7 and the phone would mount without a problem previously. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Did you flash to the new 2.27 leak? I have and am having the same issue. I cant get it to mount. Charges fine but nothing else.
One option might be to install SD Share from the market. It only costs $1 and I've never had issues using it to mount. Whats nice about it is that it allows the sd card to stay mounted to the phone while dual mounting it to the pc.
Go to Settings > Connect to PC. Check your default connection type and put a check in "Ask me".
I'll try those ideas omce u get home. Thx guys

I checked the connect to PC...........mine had changed to default mode was "charge" I changed it to USB mode so we shall see if that fixes it when I get home. Thx again!!!!
****UPDATE***** that fixed the issue. Dunno why it was set to charge only but issues fixed.
there are free alterntives to sd share like usn mount and others
all i did was read the thread title, and in my best Michael from the office impersonation said "That's what she said"
ok guys thanks for your prompt responses and i am sorry i started another thread about this in Q&A. for some reason i believed this was the wrong spot for it sorry. well i have tried everything you guys suggested before i posted just to make sure i wasnt going to waste anyones time. im running fresh rom and it was working fine till i wanted to update to the 2.1.1 rom flipz just released. it only charges when connected to my pc and i also tried different computers in my house to no avail. i will now try something from the market.
lol @ the office reference....
ok i tried usb switcher and auto mount your sd from the market...none of them worked
Did you check your connection type like I suggested? mizono said it worked for him.
yes i did. it didnt work it still has the same issue. i guess i just have to use my micro sd reader in the meantime. i think its the phone for some reason.
Same issue here.
Anyone have other suggestions? Basically, I plug the phone into a USB port on either of my computers and it acts just like if I'd plugged into a USB wall charger: no USB debug notification or that its connected to a PC for charging, with the option of SD mounting etc.
Running Fresh 2.1.1, I flashed Fresh Toast 2.1 but I rolled back due to a soft reboot issue.

So I cleared the default charging action, and when i restarted my phone this morning (it died overnight since I didn't have a charger with me), it recognized the computer again this morning. So I guess I'm fixed for now. But I'm not sure why.
lucky you! i still have no fix

USB on PC not working.. tried everything in threads..

So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.

I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????
Same Problem
I have the exact issue, tried many things have'nt found a fix yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
crx

Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.
thanks for response tho,

This is my issue exactly, and I haven't found a fix either. Called T-Mobile and they thought turning off debugging was the only fix I needed.
Most of them, sorry to say are half retarded. They think a data reset is the cure-all

Ain't that the truth!
If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.
Here is a link to the thread containing the links to the drivers, thanks to TGA_Gunnman:

[Q] Can't mount USB storage/SD card in OSX

I am having a huge problem mounting my Epic 4G to my Mac. When I select Mount USB, nothing happens. I have read several posts about Galaxy S phones having the same problem, they all say to have USB Debugging turned on, but mine is on and still can't mount.
Also, another huge problem. I connect my phone, then I use adb to access the sd card, but I can only use adb for a short period of time, then it disconnects itself, then I try to run adb again but it does not recognize it. I have to unplug the phone, then plug it again.
Does anybody have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it?
Note: I can do everything perfectly fine with my Sprint Hero
Thanks

I've successfully mounted my SD card on OSX. I have debugging turned off. If it won't mount, try a different slot, if that doesn't work, try rebooting the phone. It will work.

Dude, welcome to the club. Since i got my phone i have not successfully been able to have it read on my Mac Mini. Tried different cables and different ports. Some say get a powered USB hub but i'm not in the mood to clutter my puny desk space.
For now i use an app called Websharing to transfer stuff via WiFi. It's a pain sometimes but that's how i get by for now.
I don't have any problem with 10.5 or .6
I can use either regular or debug. Sometimes rebooting the phone and/or the computer helps. It could be a crappy cable. I don't think the supplied one is very good. The one I use with no problems is the overpriced 3 footer that the corporate sprint stores have. I think the cables that came with the epic, moment, and evo were el cheapo. I had a problem that you are describing with a stock supplied cable. I figured out that the micro usb end wasn't making solid contact with the phone. If I would move the cable, it would disconnect. Changing to a real micro usb cable helped me. It could be the usb port is flaky or the usb plug is intermittent. If you are using vmware fusion or bootcamp or dual boot, see if it drops connection in a different os.
No luck under Windows7 (running with Parallels Desktop) either. I'll try buying a new USB cable and see if that works ... Will try Websharing too.
Thanks
I am able to see and access the SD card at work after installing Samsumg USB Drivers under Windows XP, however I am not able to use adb to access the phone ... ahh, this is driving me crazy, I need to root the phone and install a custom rom ... >_<

Did you put your phone into debug mode?
I found that trying different USB slots on the PC, it will eventually work. When you plug it in the first time, it will install some needed drivers ABD etc, if you unplug the phone and plug it back into the same USB slot, it will install the last remaining drivers and you should now be able to see the phone.
Samsungs drivers are flaky at best. It took me a good hour to get it working for me so I could root my phone.

temporary fix
This topic has been discussed at another tread.... but anyway, The Macs (current generation only) do not give you enough energy at the USB to power the phone into connecting the memory card. Nor even enough to recognize the phone for more than a few seconds. You can get around it, temporarily, by connecting through a powered USB port. Tetheris still doen's work, but at least you can mount your sd card. It's a software issue... if you're running Windows on the mac machine, it'll connect and mount fine. So, ask Mac for a fix.

[Q] Fascinate not appearing as USB drive when mounted

Hi folks, have a problem with my fascinate, I can connect it with QPST fine, however when I use the top pulldown menu, and touch
"USB Connected - Select to copy files to and from your computer"
it gives me the option to 'Mount' which I choose, however then it doesn't appear as a USB drive on my computer (Windows 7). So, I can't get it to connect as USB drive accessible through Windows.
I have an HTC incredible also, and when I do the same options, it will immediately pop up as 2 new drives in Windows (one for SD and one for internal memory). SO, it works for my Inc, but not for my Fascinate. A few possible reasons I am guessing may be:
1) Drive letter conflict with inc/fascinate
2) Some type of driver conflict
anyways, like I said I can connect to my fascinate with QPST/QXDM/CDMA Tools, so I know the USB cable works fine. I've tried it on several computers now, my 2 office ones and my laptop, and all similar results (no USB drive showing when mounted). FWIW I also at some point messed with drivers on these other computers too. However, I did also try uninstalling Samsing drivers, and reinstalling (did not solve the problem).
Ok, if you need more info I will be happy to provide, and any help is much appreciated, thx

Hey rm2011. Sure thing, thanks. It is show up under 'Unspecified' and ...
I just figured out my problem. I had the device setup under "Dial Up Networking" for QPST use. That is an either or option with mount for USB storage (not both)
so, thanks working now
i know its been awhile and i have the same thing. but mine say unknown device. its ok when i hu my other phone same model(fascinat)
