Android Development – how to start? Start Here now - Well not right here - Android Software Development

I'm not sure this is the place for my post, please let me know and i'll move it.
Please feel free to share your thoughts (Good Bad or Evil will work)
Everything will be posted on my site www.inrim.net and www.yeshaib.com
So i’m going to share the next two three months of my journey….
Currently I work as a Project Manager for a software company and from time to time I do some development for my customers (Automation Scripts, Visual Basic and C#) but I really like it for fun…
Now what would be more fun than making a few $$$ (or as some would say “Coin” here in our southern area)
So? what am I talking about and what am I going to share and show? and why did I pick android and not iOS or WP7 or BlackBerry (note I didn’t note WebOS well maybe I did… you got me now.)
I’m going to start with Why Android:
1. Y’all have a computer so the cost to start developing is cheap (don’t have to buy a mac or anything of sort)
2. Android based phones are cheap if you want a REAL phone to play around with and I already have three (Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria and a Dell Streak on the way)
3. Android Market only costs $25
4. I like Android (although I was an iPhone user and still have an iPad…. simply get more done with an android phone)
So as i’ve covered the why android let’s move on to what i’m going to share:
1. I’m going to share most of my ideas but will start with two small App/Util (you will know soon)
2. I will share all the revenue coming from the applications and the website (AdSense etc), not trying rub it in if I do end up making some coin just trying to give you and idea of your ROI (as you time is money)
3. How I started and tips and tricks along the way (and BTW i’m really starting now I’ve never done any Java…)
4. Guides for anything I do and some source code that will turn into open source…..
And now the why am I doing this?
1. I don’t know
2. Sounds like fun
3. Hope to get some comments out of people to hear what they think of my journey (not that nasty Dodge… I drive a Merc and not that merc )
4. Still thinking about it
How’s this going to work?
I opened a new Site www.inrim.net and I will have everything Android over there (so we have a clean start…..)
Every week I will post a few posts (now I sound like…. just repeating my self) about guides where to start costs etc.
It’s going to be fun so join me there
So going to be posted in Hebrew at PDAPoint.net and my personal blog will have less information but it all started here

Android...whats the big deal?

Hey Hero users, I have a HD2, its my first win mob phone, the phone itself is amazing, the os is...meh. Every person iv spoken to loves Android, i myself have never used an Android handset, whats it like? is it really that good? whats the big deal about it?
I was going to get the Hero, until i saw the HD2.
Anyways hope to hear your responses.
Hi,
i'm a former Windows Mobile user who migrated to Android. I could write a long answer, but since i wrote a 6 part series about me switching from Windows Mobile to Android i might as well just give you a link. You can see my impressions there:
Switching from Windows Mobile to Android: Roundup
More complicated than you think - or is it ?
A key question here is wether or not the O/S in and of itself is exciting ? Many geeks, for inexplicable reasons, tend to find the O/S in and of itself perhaps overly interesting - let's pose a question: Is watching a decent film with good codec support that is abstracted from you by being already built in to the O/S more interesting than drilling three menu's deep to view I/P configuration ? For me being able to just get on with the film is more interesting. Does endlessly testing music playing software and moaning about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each appeal more to you than just listening to some good music ? A clock is a clock is a clock, right ? Not so here - in this bizzare world the relative merits have to be dissected ultimately ending in a non stop moaning about ... everything. Personally, I don't get too excited by O/S's - they are just what is says on the tin - a system allowing you operation - something which facilitates - it's the support for your hardware (i.e. good software) that's important. When buying a PC you're not too interested in what the O/S does, rather what it will allow - this is a combination of hardware and software - so, for a gamers a decent graphics adapter and drivers is important, for audiophiles, good sound card and software, for porn lovers - just a decent enough browser - horses for courses my son.
The naysayers and haters here (they are legion I'm afraid) will attempt to convince you it's incredibly important - like most things in life - it's only the case if you allow it. Android's fine - more intuitive, verbose and graphically 'clean' than Windows (fonts used, menus etc). Key questions should be - what can I do with it ? Perhaps that's the question you should have posed - the answer to that is - a lot - and even more when HTC pull their finger out of their arse and release the 2.1 Update to Android. I think they're just holding it back as a windup to all the small fools winding themselves up on here - I know I'd hold it back and it's given me no end of pleasure to see these insects moan - Ho Hum !!
Hope this is of service,
Simon xx

go get an iphone.
no seriously, go get an iphone. you want something that just works, and you don't care that the manufacturer forces you to do everything his way. you are not a geek that wants to compile his own kernel and brew his own rom, you want a fancy multimedia device that does everything as promised. you will be lucky with an iphone. correct me if i am wrong, i am not trying to **** with you here.

this guy is not interested in anything phone related. He has been banned for 4 times now on xda-devs, and keeps coming back to tell people how stupid it is that they waste their time waiting for 2.1 updates (which wouldn't be wrong, if there actually would be people which are not doing anything else than waiting for the update), and that they should look at the moon every night...which makes much more sense and has so much more value according to his logic. Still i don't understand why he keeps wasting HIS OWN time and OURS by registering again and starting the whole discussion all the time...that's really a waste of time.
Prepare for a correction, son
The clue was in the reference to Apple as crApple - they have mastered the art of illusion it would seem - but, as Hamlet said "Seems, I know not seems" -you are wrong on so many counts I don't know where to start - multitasking or lack of it is as good a place as any - proprietry ties everywhere - unbelievably overpriced - poor design (battery changing) - poor design - I for one don't physically like it both externally (body) and internally (overall designs, icons etc) - customer paying for their marketing - and the list goes on and on - itunes blah blah blah - not everyone wants to live in a world where the corporation cynically dupes the customer and what's worse - the customer colludes - no ta. Perhaps I didn't explain my sentiments as clearly as I could have (time and space constraints, but mainly effort or lack of it) - I like the Hero very much but see the flaws and feel they are relatively easily addressed. Of course, the more intelligent amongst you may have spotted the glaring fact that HTC colludes with Google who have provided Android as freeware which ultimatley will alllow them to cynically exploit you through their core business (advertising for the idiots) - ah the joys of the macro and micro views of modern business and the consumer.
I hope this goes someway to providing an answer. In short: Hero = Good but flawed, Iphone = Style but no substance - do you need it spelling out ? Apple may state over 100,00 apps available - do you know what percentage of these aren't used ? 96 % You're easily fooled my son

To the idiot above me, let's get one thing clear: there has been a MASSIVE amount of truly unimportant whingeing on here - how many posts in the 2.1 Update thread have told people to shut up and stop moaning. So I pointed out both your (you're a key moaner) and others folly crapping on all the time - its boring and not becoming of an 'adult' - I offered some alternatives along the lines of do something else, an example being have a look at the moon of a night (it is beautiful, it doesn't involve whingeing - when you've got three kids, son - maybe you'll appreciate pointing out nature's bounty etc etc) - I come on here for the same reasons as you - it's your actions as I have repeatedly pointed out that have ALLOWED me to both get to you (let it go son !) and caused much mirth - appologies for pointing out you're an idiot but - you're an idiot - feel better now ?

hmm...seems like we just found your soft spot with the whole 'moon' example....calm down...take a look at the moon tonight, and you'll feel better...i hope.
You've 'found' nothing chief - the puerile allusion to my 'soft' side etc etc - what's really got your goat is someone mercillessly pointed out the truth, that being :
You're not quite as bright as your own self image tells you
You're insights reveal .......... nothing
You are easily distracted and miss the point in a spectacular manner
There's plenty more but then we'd start getting into fees and perhaps 6 sessions of exploratory councelling - what with you living in the land of the Hun, that may prove difficult
I've let it go now, I suggest you do the same

I would say if you have to ask what's the big deal then your interest in phones is not strong enough to need to know!

Wooooottt? No idea what gay Simon is talking about. I guess he's gone full retard.
I sometimes despair at this forum and the people who populate it. A noobie asks a simple and perfectly reasonable question and the next thing you know it all kicks off. Have you all been on the electronic equivalent of Newcastle Brown??
Why not lets get back to helping somebody (for those that are unclear of the definition look it up in the OED).
To rizla316. I much prefer Android because it is user friendly. As you have suggested WM is not. It is almost as user friendly as the iphone without all the problems - like being locked in tight to the great satan Apple. I also like the capacitive screen, which I think you have on the HD2. However Android really brings out how good that type of screen is.
Just my personal opinion, given in order to try to answer your original question. Now watch me getting flamed for having it and sharing it
BTW if you want a friendly Android forum try here

Android on Hong Kong One2Free HD2

Hello Everyone,
Apologies if this ground has already been well covered, but I thought I'd just share my experience bringing up ANDROID on my HTC HD2 phone as delivered by a carrier here in Hong Kong called One2Free.
Yesterday I was a bit bored so I tried to install ANDROID on the unit after seeing a demonstration of ANDROID booting on an HD2. I found the video on YouTube by accident. It was posted by a guy named Hakeem.
I tried to follow his directions, but nothing worked, so from knowing nothing about the ANDROID ecosystem in particular, I decided to do it by myself from just reading stuff (like on xda-developers). I was successful and it took me about four (4) hours of research and messing around before I could get the unit working.
BUT, the entire experience was *very* typical of my experience with installing Linux in general:
1) There's a lot of incomplete information or just plain wrong information.
2) There's a lot of legacy links and obsolete or incomplete code.
3) There's a lot of project abandonment.
4) There's a LOT of people saying "go for it!" and in doing so they obscure the thread, clogging up the channel with lots and lots of meaningless messages so that forums go to 100+ pages of nothingness.
I thought I'd try my best in under 2000 words to make it crystal clear how to get ANDROID up and running on a One2Free supplied HD2.
There's a LOT of cheap HD2 phones available on the 2nd hand market in Hong Kong now that Windows 7 has been released and the iPhone is such a hit. Just go to Ap Liu Gai and you can get one for about HKD2500. For our USA friends, on eBay HD2 costs (today 2011-01-09) USD650 NEW and about USD335 USED
Just so you know, I bought the HTC HD2 after months of research because of the following reasons:
- I have a long history of being satisfied with HTC devices
- The HD2 has a VERY, VERY large screen
- The HD2 has a VERY HIGH QUALITY display
- The HD2 has a VERY fast processor
- The HD2 has a GENEROUS amount of RAM
- The HD2 has received EXCELLENT reviews on CNET
- The HD2 features Windows Mobile OS functionality
I'm pretty happy with the phone, though it does have its shortcomings (don't they all?). The phone freezes. It can overheat. In short...it's WinDOZE. But it's still a very productive unit for me as I have been using HTC SmartPhones since 2002, since the 02 XDA and I really know the functionality within Windows Mobile Edition / Compact Edition.
Anyway, ANDROID looks like a cute little OS. It's certainly hot. It is also derived from an OS I love and have worked with for a long time (Linux), so why not try to get it running on my phone? Hey, I had some time on my hands. Also, my techie friends (all of whom are carrying iPhones) were looking down at me for not having an iPad or an iPhone (both products I used for about 10 minutes and then just gave to my wife to play with, she's an accountant and delighted with these non PROsumer devices). So, why not load up ANDROID 2.2 on the HD2 and see what people say? It's a little like getting Windows up and running on an INTEL based iMac...it makes the other guy blink and keeps them guessing about how smart you really are...
Having accomplished the task (pretty easily, as all things Linux go...) I thought that anyone else in Hong Kong might appreciate how I did it by just copying the steps I followed. No brains required.
You DO have to pick a distribution, though. I picked SuperRAM Froyo 1.5 because it is still under maintenance and runs in RAM, a concept I like very much. I also went this way because the first ANDROID distribution I ever saw (in that Hakeem YouTube video mentioned above) is no longer under maintenance.
I've documented my complete experience at:
docserve (dot) yougrow (dot) net (slash) HOWTO-HD2-Android (slash) HOWTO-HD2-Android.txt
Enjoy!
Thank you. Comments welcome. If you cannot locate the tools I used to make this happen (like, the links provided in the HOWTO give up a 404) then just drop a note here and I'll make them available, but please do look for them first.

Anything you can do to promote more sales and fans of HD2's is fine by me .... I usually keep 'good' electronics for 3 years, because I grow into them and keep modding them until they can do a lot more at 2 years of age then new stuff can, so as long as the hd2 stays popular I will have more rescources to lengthen it's service life -- keep spreading the word.
Thank you ..
but the link you gave is broken ..
The link is fine!!
Haven't you try the NAND ROM editions!!!
Since the first version of SuperRAM editions i have tried , I would said of course, "It's a very good build". (darkstone) fully respect
but lot of softwares, doesn't run on this build (Personally)!

Android on Intel chip hardware project

Ok, I want to start out by mentioning; some of you may or may not know about a project I've been working on since March 2013, the Android Desktop OS which is now in version 2.0.
Can test the interactive demo online here: http://invis.io/95IKINK4
I've been on this project by myself, putting together ideas and re-imagining how Android should be on a desktop. Now, I know that Android x86 does exist, so please don't announce that android on the pc has been done already, because it's not how I envision any of this.
I think also they have started this as a hobby with no real distinct intention, I started my idea to give Android a very bright future. I believe as well as many others who are excited for this project that Android could be massive on desktops.
Yes, I know that it is written with a Linux kernel and it is aimed for mobile, but my goal is to change that. I want it to be able to run all the apps from the Market Place in it's normal fashion without anything complicated, but I want the core of this, the heart of this to be written for Intel hardware for starters.
I know there are some guys wrote some Intel hardware code for android, but I don't think they did it to be anything major. I want to take this to a whole new level, I really want this project out there, I want it to stand out.
Why does Windows, Mac and Ubuntu get pc and mobile counterparts but not Android? I feel personally it isn't quite fair and that Android should have its potential shown.
For those of you who have never seen my project, you can check it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2214161
Everything is still subject to change, but overall I am happy with what I have. I want to advance on Android without steering away from the heart of it. There are more ideas I have, but have been short on time with doing what I want.
Now here comes the icing.
I am stuck at a crossroad; I need a team, I need to find those who are just as interested in this as I am, but I don't know where to find them. I've posted this in numerous places without much coming back as far as coders.
I've been told to do a kickstarter, but I don't know the first thing about it, how to find the people, manage the money, who to trust, bring this to completion etc... So this brings me back to square one, where I just continue to develop this idea in it's visual form, because I don't know what to do.
I have been dedicated to making this happen for a long time, this can and will be a long term career, but I need the man power, those who believe in this. But where to find it? I figured since the internet is vast people would come at least wanting to give it a crack, but it has been dry out here.
I am open to feedback and really hope this can get off the ground.

Wirelessly Link 2 Phones to Run as 1 ¿(WiFi/BT)?

Code:
[FONT="Fixedsys"][SIZE="2"][COLOR="DeepSkyBlue"] First and foremost, Thanks for stopping by, you may become intreged if you continue reading my thread.
This Idea came to me a long time ago but I am unable to do anything with it as I am not a developer/programmer so I would never be able to create this on my own.
However, being the MadScientist I am (likely only in my own mind) I feel the only thing to do is to pass on the idea to somebody, anybody with the skill set, talents, abilities, or even the right friends list to make my dream a reality. So to the big idea.
I always had the cheap generic phones that were free with the contract, I would go through these phones like water and I came up with an idea that if I could put two phones or even three phones together and make them run as one phone it would be a pretty great phone [¿¿some Dr. Frankenstein ****??lol]
Over the past couple years I've always been interested in developing and apps in programming computers and how they work and operate so I now I'm in love with the expensive flashy phones and I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S6 and the S7 both Android 6.0.1 O.S.,
Both fully functional. (I'm afraid trying to customize ROM I'll turn my $500 BEAUTY into a fragile useless brick) (or even worse ruin the security features) because of my ignorance in Android Development.
None-the-less if anybody can come up with a way to join two phones to run as one without tearing them apart even if they only communicate with each other through Bluetooth or through Wi-Fi and can even Share/Clone to the partner phone screen through an encrypted nonbroadcasted network or connection that would be neat but it would be great to be able to share processors and sensors or leave on in my car in the parking lot at work and have it relaying a signal to the one in my pocket. I'd love to have them setup where I could use either number on either phone or share one number between the two. If there is any possible way this can happen I would really appreciate some feedback or I might just on a crazy rant and just happened to be the world's smartest retard.
I appreciate you reading the entire rant I appreciate any feedback positive or negative dream Weavers and dream killers is all welcome.[/COLOR][/FONT]

Doing my first OS replacement or ROM replacement.

I am currently looking for an alternative OS or ROM on a phone. My big challenges are I have a great grand fathered in at&t data plan. I don't want to loose and There is no good phone that is both on their list and seems to give me the option to try different ROMS or OS's if one dose not fit my needs.
I truly believe if there is a place that linux could fit best it is on my private device. I don't mind windows for my Daily desktop but in the past few months I have watched the location data icon flash on the top of my phone despite having turned location data off. It would be nothing for google to truly allow us to make this choice on our own. An it always felt wrong to get a google phone hack it and then side load a ROM like copper or even lineage.
I haven't looked into Paranoid Android user yet. The real thing I keep bumping my head against is compatibility with AT&T so I guess I am here to ask the following questions.
If I do a custom OS like Post Market OS, Sailfish, even Ubuntu touch. Will some screw with my AT&T plan while others don't. Its not like I am going to tell them I switching the OS but I imagine there is something in there that allows them to throttle remotely and prevents tethering etc? perhaps one of the choices spoofs that. What is the best ROM/OS for this? Crapy call by the courts on that one BTW when that decision was handed down, and kudos to the absolute BOSS who went after AT&T. Funny thing is I am not even that big of a hot spot user. I have no problem with cafe wifi. It's not like I am doing banking there and I air gap that Laptop from my home wifi. The rare occasion that I have needed it was a recent business trip and even that wasn't allot of data. But I digress.
Second question I want to support the linux community that are building new OS's for existing devices as I think that is really the week point for adoption at this time. I have been thinking about it and I think the best way to do it would be to hire a new developer to give a hand to an existing project for a few weeks. Fresh eyes and all that. Any recommendations on how to select one?
It's not that there is anything wrong with ROM's but they all use AOSP and allot live hardware designed for there retail version android meaning they get at least a licensing fee for each one. I am big believer in actual capitalism in divers markets with real consumer choice. What we have today is not it and supporting the behemoths in any way isn't really the key to success. I could take you down the rabbit hole of how the problem is the government and things like the CIA investment corporation AKA In-Q-Tell. Picking winners and loser's and taking free market's to the wood shed and shooting it in the head. However I think that is enough and it gives my disposition. So, you might Have a good Idea on how to guide me.
Thanks for any help.
WoW no response at all. Did I post this in the wrong place maybe it should be someplace else.
As per the mod bump i guess
