im attempting to root my mytouch 4g, got it brand new today
i have been able to root 2 in the past with no difficulty but for some reason when i try and root im not successful.
right when i enter
"./gfree -f"
i get
"error reading input file"
any help would really be appreciated
i tried searching but couldnt find anything..
i was able to downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2
after trying to gfree, still not rooted and i cant get s-off
any advice?
Although im at 2.2 now my hboot is 86.0
Is this ok?
still no root,
i wonder if visionary permanently messed up my file system...
what sucks is that my wifi doesnt work now since i downgraded to 2.2....

all of the how to's are exactly the same. just different information in each one.
I unrooted my phone and followed This Walk-though and it worked perfectly. no if/ands/buts about it.
If that seems to complicated you can always follow The Unlockr's method it's REALLY simple and easy to follow.

id rather not use visionary,
is it cool to just use this method on a 2.2.1 device?

i dont want to use visionary, its too automated lol
I really do want to Root my Tmobile G2, I'm rather a "Newbie" at this whole thing. Id like to root and flash CM7 Gingerbread.. I just need some help. What would be the easiest guide to do so? Really would hate bricking my phone. haha
I'm in the same position as you. I got the G2 since it came out and I've been debating to root or not because there's other ways to do it. Also people had probs this and that so I've been stock. Where can we find the easiest best guide to root.

See button at top of screen that says "wiki"? Go there, select HTC VISION, follow the instructions. THAT IS THE BEST GUIDE.
I got my G2 in a trade on Friday night, and had it rooted by Saturday. I tried a Villain 2.2 ROM Sunday, and decided to flash CM7 last night. Couldn't have been easier.
I used this guide to gain perm root, it took like 30 min after I read it about 10 times to make sure I got it all straight. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
Skip the engineering hboot part, you don't need it and it's too risky for noobs. Good luck guys.

I'm thinking about rooting my gf's glacier and have read the wiki regarding the methods to use, it appears similar to the G2 visionary plus gfree method,i however used the gfree and rage exploit instead so I was wondering could I do the same with the glacier? Its not covered in the wiki so I'm reluctant to do so, any help is appreciated!

This is best method for rooting ones MyTouchHD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
They are rooted slightly differently. The files are not exactly the same.
I would definitely use the above link. A week ago I had no idea what rooting was, and I used that link and followed the directions to the T. It was a great walk through and it worked perfectly.
thanks for the replies guys! i will just go ahead and stick to what the wiki says, and as for the link mentioned above is that the preferred method?
I don't know if it is the preferred method by everyone, but it definitely is for me, since it worked great. I followed the instructions in the link neidlinger posted to a tee, and it worked exactly as stated. I had a factory fresh Glacier with 2.2.1 on it and this method worked perfect. I now have permanent root and with no issues whatsoever.
after more reading it appears i can use the gfree + rage method! but it is known as the cyanogenmod way when it comes to this phone.
question, i rooted my mt4g i think before that thread was published so i used visionary to get temp and perm root.
is my device rooted the same as this method? i know i dont have the sim unlocked like my G2 is via using the gfree but is it still just as good?
i just installed cyanogenmod 7nightly 8 on it and it seems to be running ok. i havent played with it tho as it is not my primary device anymore (went to a G2).
if so, can Gfree root still be done? can i still do the gfree method on the phone with a terminal emulator like i did on the G2 because i cannot get ADB to install or recognize a phone on my computer at all.

If you read the title in the thread it explains that you should still do it and why. Also you can check out my adb thread in the dev section or in my signature for a easy 5 minute setup. There is a video too. And yes you can do it with terminal emulator too.

Are the instructions for using gfree via term emulator in the link above or somewhere else? Thanks for the info. Im kinda done with adb its starting to make me want to throw my laptop lol
From my permarooted 1209mhz G2 with CM7 nightly 6
Ok so I did a stupid thing and ran the exe file of the canadian version gb sense leak and ended up with latest botloader, radio and everything and lost root. Now though I still see S-OFF on bootloader I am unable to root using non-visionary gfree method described at this link. I get stuck at step 9 while trying to gain temporary root. I see "Forked #### childs", reset terminal but when i try to launch terminal again it wont open and phone becomes very very slow and sometimes freezes.
Could someone please guide how to root this guy again (if at all its possible as yet)? I have attached a screenshot from the bootloader screen.
I like this rom though, its so smooth and of course I can live with it but I cooked my own version of it removing all the bloats and replacing a few things ( I hate music app on this - forgets shuffle settings every now and then) and wanted to try it
Haha that's a bit funny. You may have to wait for the phone to be released and rooted.

EDIT: Unless its really a judgement day this Saturday. Either way, I would be a happy man (or a happy zombie)

Mytouch 4g-white
Permrooted s-off
Root Method-gfree
CWR-3.0.2.4
Rom-Royalginger v2.1
Kernel-Ckisgen~smartass~v1.2
Root by SuperOneClick, using Gingerbreak method. Look in Nexus forums, if you want more guidance on that. Should be as simple as downloading SuperOneClick, enabling ADB debugging on the device, connecting it and running SOC.
Thanks Jack! Will give it a try.
If you have S=OFF, you should be able to flash custom recovery (ClockworkMod) via fastboot and then flash whatever rooted ROM you want. Do you want this particular ROM you have right now for any reason? If not, just flash something else.
SuperOneClick using gingerbreak does not work.

Sorry for sounding like noob but how do I flash CWM via fastboot?
nevermid. found option94's guide to install cwm through adb. but still it doesnt work, i get "remote: not allowed". I guess I dont have true S-OFF even though bootloader shows S-OFF.
This is resolved...
Care to expand on the solution please? This may help someone else...
Sure. Flashed hboot-flashable stock 2.2.1 image from this thread then rooted (used SuperOneClick this time) and back on rooted custom gb sense.
So can you get true S-Off like in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
with the Panache?
I just bought a Mytouch from Newegg, and the only thing that bugs me about it is the Mytouch logo. Also, i feel I can rely on Newegg a little better for Warranty claims, than Mobilicity's "approximated 1 month till we get your something, not sure what phone" for my N1.
'Scuse the rant
But seriously, isn't it harder to root/mod the Panache? Thats the feeling i have gotten. What about your SLCD and EMMC versions?
Thanks for your advice on this.
Edit: At this price point I'm not sure if it matters to some, but the Panache with taxes costs $90 more than the Newegg Mytouch with free shipping and tax. $564 vs $474

As of yet the Panache has not been rooted nor has the new bootloader been cracked.
Thank you again mr mystery.
Thats too bad. It is a beautiful phone.
panache not rooted yes as its pretty new, give some time.
panache bootloader is different story as i myself is using MT4G on panache ROM that i flashed using the RUU.
i had S-off before so thats why maybe but atleast on mt4g u can get root using gingerbreak. if u manage to use the RUU by mistake.
Well like the title said .i have tried to root the htc glacier/my touch 4g . I have tried every thing exept the gfree one cause I hear that it has some problems.. Anyways I cant make my s=off . I have the 0.86.0000 bootloader and I was woundering if that could be the problem ... I have 2.2.1 . Thank you .

Rooted two mytouches with gfree never had a problem bro. Try considering gfree as an option if it all fails. There is even a video about it on YouTube.

If you still on 2.2.1 then you can easily root with visionary and root.sh.
Unless he has MG2DE eMMC, in which case he'll need gfree.
OP, instead of "hearing" things, read the stickies. And then use gfree.
Well If I go to the bootloader screen it reads
Gracier pvt ship s-on
Hboot-0.86.000
Microp-0429
Radio-26.03.02.26_m
Emmc-boot
Sep 27 2010, 11:12:59
Since you don't have engineering bootloader, whatever you read there is irrelevant.
I already wrote what you should do.
So can I just flash the engineering bootloader . And then just root with root.sh ?

I thought it was as obvious as I could make it.
To the [OP] Since you have that chip you have to root using ./gfree. There is no other way to do it. If you try to use the root.sh method you'll end up getting ticked, posting a new thread about how root.sh doesn't work, then we'll remind you of this post. Where @Jack_R1 told you to use ./gfree. Then you'll get all mad because we are being rude, and you'll want to smack us.
So instead of doing that read my "noobie" thread, in my signature, then use the ./gfree and give us a bottle of beer since we helped you.
I have 2 MT4Gs, both rooted and flashed.
Mine wasn't updated and had the SEM04G chip. Easy to root using methods with visionary.
My wife's was 2.3.4 updated with M4G2DE chip. Downgrade was easy enough. Rooting was a pain in the neck.
I went through every option until I got to the True S=Off tutorial using gfree. Once I went through that process, I was permarooted, and then changed to eng bootloader. It can be done without bricking...it's just that much harder to do.

gfree is not the only way to permaroot the MT4G, but it's a good way to do it. I was able to get permarooted with the root.sh method with my phone. Had to try a couple of methods a couple of times each before I got to the gfree method, which finally worked for my wife's phone.

HTC phones are always harder to root than others, since they require S-Off and all that stuff. but when the hard part is complete, the rest is very simple and easy to understand.
I now know that. Lol. But I also have the hd7 and that's even harder to dev unlock "root" . But now I'm only buying htc phones. I like the UI that they have.. and they get more support from devs .. its been almost a year and the sidekick is till stuck with froyo .. they are saying that tmobile is not going to release a gb update ..
