Root help!

First time rooter here and was wondering if there is a simple way to go by doing this. I know there is visionary and gfree method. But my issue is that if I need to unroot (say I need to exchange it out for another one if something goes wrong) which one is the best to go by or is there an even more simpler way? Or do I need to even unroot? Like in other words, will they not care if it is rooted or not? I also have the monthly $5 warranty if that helps.

This method (Click Here ) is the simplest with the LEAST chance of bricking your phone. (make sure to follow the link at the bottom of the page).
Now the good thing is if you use that method and do not flash the engineering screen "unrooting" the phone can be done the very same way. You will need the "unroot.sh" file script (Which can be downloaded from here) to do that but is very possible.

gfree method is reverse-able I think. you need to back up the file(s) made during gfree process.

It is reversible. but the root.sh method is much easier for one worried about bricking a device.

that all depends on what you plan on doing with your rooted phone. if you wanna flash roms and all that fun stuff a temp root will not turn s=off so it wont work. the gfree method is the only root method i could get to work on mine and i tried all of them.

If you have a problem with the root.sh script method of rooting your phone SOMETHING (more times than not, it's the user) is seriously jacked.
The root.sh will turn s=off easily and painlessly. it will allow you do do what ever you want to do in a rooted state minus flashing splash screen. Which you need an Engineering HBoot for that. Even the ./gfree method will not flash that it has to manually be done.
I had my s=off prior to leaving the T-Mobile store the day i bought my MyTouchHD using the root.sh method.
i would be willing to unroot my phone back to a stock format and reroot & flash CM7 with that method if you would like me to, and let you see via youtube.

Like I said, im kinda new at this and a vid would be really helpful to the best root for me. Also I wanted to root my phone so I can get gingerbread on it (phone ruins alot smoother from what I hear) and is it a difficult process to unroot from a permroot through visionary plus.

if you follow the method i posted above from TheUnlockr you will not have any problems. Like i said that way is pretty much impossible to brick the phone.

If I root using visionary, would that be the same as the gfree method? Im talking about permroot
Also I heard that in visionary there is an 'unroot now' option is that true?

The MyTouch4G, as well as many other HTC devices, has a security protocol in place. That is what we are referring to when we say "s-on/s-off" the perma-root option on VISIONary will not turn that off. Option94, who is great developer, said that his team couldn't come up with a one touch root process for this phone. with that being said you must you either use the ./gfree or the root.sh method to root your phones. I have links to both in my signature.
However, and i don't mean to come across as rude.
I would step back from jumping in the "root pool" and look around and study. Rooting your phone doesn't put you in any certain level, or any class of Android users. You need to know the very basics, and what they do. There is a-lot of information out there. Take your time, read up, and study the process before attempting anything. It's pretty clear this is your first root, and it appears you didn't even attempt to read a rooting process for this phone. You just search for one click root and found VISIONary and ./gfree, and ./gfree scared you off, most likely due to the ADB commands. I have a link in my signature to a thread where T_B Drew has set up a very simple way to set up your ADB and get you rolling. Start there, it's a good launch point. Once you are done with that check out the "post your eMMC serial number" thread in the General section and see what chip set you have, and the downfall of rooting a phone with a bad, or maybe "good" chip.

you can't perm root with visionary alone, you need to use the root.sh method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
visionary root.sh is the safer way to root your device.
the next way is the gfree method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
the differences: visionary/root.sh method gives you label s-off, and changes your bootloader to eng hboot.
gfree however, gives you radio s-off (you can flash eng hboot if you want), super CID, and SIMUNLOCK your device, so you can use other carrier's SIM cards (i e ATT)
but first, check your eMMC chip type http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081243
if your chip is an M4G2DE, i highly recommend you not root, as the chip will die.

Well that's a good start. But you would of seen in the thread for the ./gfree method that you need to replace a specific file to unroot your phone using the ./gfree method. So no the VISIONary.apk will not unroot your device for you. You must replace the file it puts on your SDcard.

Since some obviously don't work on the MT4G, I would say what version you use does matter. What are you going to do with a version does doesn't work?

i see where @saranhai is coming from. I've personally never had problems with r14. But i will state i've see alot of people claim r14 is FUBAR'd.
better to use r11 to avoid redownloading, reinstalling when/if r11 doesn't work.

Lost phone..new one came with stock 2.3.4

So I lost my phone..the new one came in last night. And it came with 2.3.4.. I tried to down grade it..followed all the instructions from the forum and everything worked fine..until the bootloader part. It said that it couldn't find the
PD15img.zip file when I put it in the root of the sd card. And then I followed the FAT32 method to make the phone read my sdcard..but that still Didn't work..now what?? Used the search bar but could find anything..

I just received my exchange today and very upset mine came with 2.3.4 also I can't lie it's better than I expected but than again I was using a G1 while waiting a month for my phone I have pre-paid but I was so looking foward to using the new evil d sense 3.0

Look in the vision g2 section I was in the same boat as you there is a tut in those forums for downgrading to 2.2.1 with adb it also works for mt4g wish I still had link but its there

Same here... Lost my phone and received the replacement yesterday (off course version 2.3.4). Turned out it is a refurbished, the speaker not working, the earpiece not working. I missed another release of lovely Miui

I just happened to see this post and am curious what the problem is... Why are you downgrading it???
I have a Mytouch 4g (HTC Glacier) which was having issues and I just got the replacement. I have not even turn it on, but I have not doubt it will be 2.3.3-- their latest OTA udpate.
Is there going to be any problem rooting this?? Again, it alarmed me that people were trying to downgrade..
Has the firmware/bootloader changed???

There is no method to root 2.3.4 yet. That's why people have to downgrade.

Do you mean like downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.2.1 root it, and then upgrade to 2.3.4?
But the only way to do that is if we had the stock 2.3.4 rom, which we don't have, correct?
So I can skip the root and wait, or I can downgrade and be able to use 50% of the apps which I would otherwise be unable to use as they require root.
This sucks.... I am sure someone is working hard on this... but I am surprised there has not been any method (even one that was risky -- as in one typo and you've bricked it) figured out by someone...
Ummm.. Next question then, Can anyone tell me any obvious benefits of the TMO 2.3.4 stock? Is it fast, or mediocre? Or is it just worthless due to the fact that you cannot root it?

Didn't quite understand what you mean but yes, if you got the phone pre-installed with TMO's 2.3.4 then there's no way to root that. You would have to downgrade back to Froyo then root it.
There really are no benefits to TMO's stock 2.3.4 since CM7 2.3.5, VU's 2.3.4 and MIUI's 2.3.5 GB are all better and faster. And even if you liked TMO's GB version for some reason there are rooted and deodexed versions to flash in the dev section. So there really is no downside to rooting.
And as previously stated, the only way to downgrade would be to use that thread in the G2 section which requires ADB.

If you have any questions I just finished downgrading my replacement phone and and rooting via gfree last night.
And before last night I've never even used ADB before.
Found 2 threads that helped me do just that.
Got it all downgraded then followed a video to root gfree. (mackster248)
(Never rooted that way before either.)
Anyway PM if you need help. Maybe I can help you out.

I came over from Sprint Sunday. I bought a new MT4G, and it had 2.3.4 on it. I had a bad feeling there wasnt gonna be a root method for it. I jumped on my PC and did a few google searches. I came up with this method to downgrade:

It went perfect. I also looked at a few of the root methods. I found this one to be easiest for me:

I only post this becuase I havent seen any links posted and I imagine alot more people are gonna end up with the GB MT4G's out of the box. Total time to downgrade and root was less than 30 minutes.

Thanks for the links. Going to have the phone on Monday with the hope that the phone is working fine so i can play with that.

But this method cannot be used if you have 2.3.4 stock, correct? I looked at it quickly.... it doesn't seem to mention downgrading (unless I overlooked it), so it would require downgrade to Froyo first, correct?

Yes you would half to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root there is no way to root 2.3.4 right now

Yea, unlike most of the other HTC. Phones that got a 2.3.4 update, revolution doesn't support unlocking the mytouch 4g without a downgrade. On the first page of this thread I posted a link to downgrade and the easiest way I found to root. Someone also posted links on this page. I found a few other root methods but they required you to install apps to gain temp root access or download files on the phones browser. The link I found actually only requires you to dl and unzip a few files to your PC and run maybe 10 or 12 commands in a terminal. Very easy.

[Q] Downgrading from 2.3.4 help!

Well I picked up a mytouch 4g, but I want to root it or would rather just keep my phone..
So both guides in the xda forums haven't worked for me, one says you need temp root. Which I don't have. And another one says I need to use adb. Which I can't ever get installed on my computer, I've tried sooo many times..
Is there anyone out there that can help me?
Or another guide that's easier to just downgrade from gingerbread to froyo so I can root?

Rooting a phone is technically exploiting a security flaw, or series or flaws. Since 2.3.4 is pretty much bullet proof on our phone you need to downgrade first. If you cannot get that to happen. Sorry about your luck.

You have to use adb. I never used adb before but I got it set up last night and downgraded to 2.2.1 without any problems. I read something about a goldcard method mentioned, but I have no idea what it is and how it works. Its worth a search though..

Fine,guy. I did research, just wanted to see if there is any current ways, because everything I read is from 2011 about Gingerbread not having any roots for 2.3.4. Guest ill just downgrade, thank you anyways.

And you downgrade to 2.2.1....we didn't receive a 2.3.3 update.

After doing that, how do you get back to 2.3.4 without losing root privileges?

You install custom recovery and flash a pre-rooted 2.3.4 ROM.
There's always an option to remove HBOOT from the 2.3.4 PD15IMG.ZIP and flash it through HBOOT, and then install a custom recovery and flash su.zip in it. But it's a bit more complicated.

download a custom gingerbread rom
here is one that's pretty popular;

If you are S-Off
Grab Froyo 2.2.1 zip from this forum. Make sure it is called PD15IMG.zip and place it on the root of your sdcard
Shut phone off & boot into HBoot (vol down + pwr button)
Have it load the PD15IMG.zip file and once its done your phone will be back to running Froyo.
Now grab Visionary+ & root.rar (from this forum) & a terminal emulator & a file explorer.
Put visonary+.apk on your sdcard and run it via file explorer for temp root
Extract root.sh to /sdcard/root
now load up terminal emulator and type:
su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
Let it run (takes a minute sometimes)
Once that is done go back to Visionary+ and "Perm root" reboot and you should have perm root.
Now just Clockword Rom manager and you can flash whatever ICS rom you want. (running CM9-unofficial personally)

Not completely true. I've already rooted a few mt4g with bad chips. 2 being my girls and my brothers mt4g.

Using root.sh? Or perhaps using gfree?

The "bad" chip only roots with gfree. I tried root.sh. It just looked at me ans scoffed.

Never used gfree since I don't own a PC. All bad chip mt4g I've rooted have been rooted within the device with visionary and root.sh method from the unlockr.

I have only ever followed the guide on XDA for ultimate S=OFF rooting guide using visionary, seems to work the best.

trying to root via gfee and can't get visionary to work, it just says "rooting" forever. I'm on stock Froyo... any idea?

Gave up on root.sh? Lol. Make sure usb debugging is enabled and reboot between attempts.

Ya figured gfree was better plus Sim unlock. I did both of those. Still same thing
