[Q] Pinch to zoom in browswer jumping around - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The other day my fiancée and I were in a T-Mobile retail store to play with their demo myTouch 4g to see if my fiancée would like it. Almost immediately she complained that while zooming in on web pages using the pinch to zoom gesture, it would not stay centered on what she was trying to zoom in on. It seemed to randomly jump around to a different part of the page forcing her to scroll around to get back to what she was trying to zoom in on. My N1 certainly doesn't do that, and we played with several other Android demo phones and none of them did so either.
Thinking it might have been a problem with the demo unit, we asked if there was another one we could try. The sale's person was confused and didn't even understand what we were asking, but she pulled out her own personal myTouch4g and let us try it and it did the exact same thing.
I didn't spend time looking through settings, but my N1 doesn't have a setting that I've found to cause it to act that way. It is a deal breaker for my fiancée, so I'm trying to figure out what the deal is, because this phone is otherwise the perfect match for her.
So, is this normal? Is there a way to make it stay centered while zooming?
Thanks!

Never seen the focus jump around. The browser will reflow text when you zoom so that the horizontal entirety of a block of text is visible regardless of the zoom level; I thought all android stock browsers did that. Maybe the particular site you were looking at had some weird stylesheets that caused problems for the browser trying to reflow the text?

That sounds very suspicious, "so that the horizontal entirety of a block of text is visible". That very well could be what it was doing and just messing up and not focusing on the correct text. However, that is exactly what we would want to turn off. My N1 (currently running stock waiting for 2.3 OTA) does not do that. I get a single view of the page that I zoom in or out on, and nothing reflows in any way.

Google Maps questions

So I have a few questions about Google maps.
- First, is there anyway to have smooth zooming w/ pinch to zoom?
- Is there anyway to load the images as Im panning? Idk if i'm the only one but when I pan in GMaps, any area that wasn't displayed shows up as gray until I release my finger drag, then the map redraws. Even if I try and pan back the screen seems to have to re fresh, but it only refreshes when I lift my finger up
- And last, any thoughts on Google Navigation coming to the HD2? That would be great if it did.
That's pretty much all I've got. Any help would be awesome

I don't have any issues with "sketchy" pinch-to-zoom functions in Google Maps. All of "my maps" render just fine, perfectly executed upon request.
As for the Google Navigation program, that does exist, unofficially of course. And you certainly won't find it here... at least not that I know of. Try (ironically) Google searching and you should come across something from another website, very similar to XDA.
Hmmmmm.... Thats good that GNavigation works on the HD2. I'll wait for an official release (unless there is an announcement that it won't officially come to the HD2)
I don't think that the maps are "sketchy". I think I just have a setting or something set that makes them not cache or update during "Pan" events.
As for the zoom, it just feels like there is no tweening between the zoom levels. ie, as I'm pinching, it jumps from level to level w/o any intermediate zooming. I don't know if that makes any sense.
If there isn't any settings that help these then that's cool and I'll just deal with it (my wife has an android phone and I get crap from her cuz "Your phone is the best" but it can't do [insert function] that mine can!)
Thanks!

Browser not resizing some pages correctly

Hey folks ... first post, and I did try to search for this but came up with nothing.
Wondering if there's a fix or workaround for this. Some pages, when I load them, are not resized correctly for the browser. I would post a link, but ... you can google search for "best of the web today" and the first match is a page that does this wrong-resize behavior.
While it's loading, it is sized correctly. But once it completes loading, it resizes and it's too wide, so I have to scroll horizontally to read it.
This is just one example, but there are many pages that do this.
If I stop the page load before it's 100%, then it stays sized correctly for the browser (well, the block indents still run off the right side, but this seems to be true for every single thing that has block indents). So something that happens when it completes the loading is the problem. FWIW stopping it at like 95% doesn't seem to affect the content.
Any of you seen this, or know how to get around it? It's becoming quite annoying.
have you tried an alternate browser?
no ... is there an alternate browser that 1. doesn't embed ads and 2. supports flash?
tried it in skyfire, same problem.
flash isn't supported with android except the new 2.2 froyo build. even then, most official froyo builds haven't been released. there is a froyo build for the aria built from cyanogen mod source, but flash hasn't been figured out yet.
a lot of people like dolphin browser. opera mini is pretty popular as well.
@mattbollenbach, I think the OP may have meant "FlashLITE support", one of the nicer HTC features, if you ask me. I don't know if there are other browsers that support HTC's FlashLITE, but it shouldn't take too much to test that out.
Personally, the only thing that annoys me about the browser is when I load it, google is my homepage and it never displays correctly... haha, always way to big for the screen. Obviously, this is nothing more than the tiniest of gripes.

Only 2 questions I couldn't find the answer to...

I came from an HD2, and what HTC wrote over in WinMo 6.5 I thought was great, especially the gallery app, which cleared up an image when you zoomed in. I've noticed that this phone does not do that. When I zoom in on a picture I took it just turns all fuzzy, like it's been compressed or something. I know the pics are high res cause they look great on my computer, but I just can't understand why they don't clear up when you zoom in. Anyone else experience this? The only other issue I've noticed is that every once in a while I'll open an app up, lets say the web browser, and it pops up and then just force closes. Several others I know with a Vibrant/Captivate are having this problem as well, and I was just curious if anyone knew the cause. I'm totally new to Android so please pardon me if these are dumb questions.
for the second half of your post you should get your phone replaced.
there have been a couple people on here that had that issue with "sticking" buttons so apps would randomly close or settings would popup.
As for your first issue, it sounds to me as though you are zooming into the thumbnail version of the picture. Perhaps the full high-res version is actually found in another pile/folder under the gallery. I don't think the thumbnails are generally viewable separately, though I do see a lot of other media gathered up from various apps which can be kinda annoying.
No I promise I'm not zooming on the thumbnails, I'm clicking the folder with all of my pictures in it, and it'll let me zoom in on them, but they never clear up. It's not the camera cause the resolution is right, just the zooming isn't working properly. it's weird, and frustrating.
I definitely don't have the camera problem. I tested it with photos I took as well as wallpapers in my gallery. I assume you are using the gallery app, right?
If you're getting FCs on stock apps you may want to just do a factory data reset (settings/privacy). It happens occasionally to all android phones and the only sure fix I've seen is a reset. Make sure you're not using task killers or home replacement apps (pandahome, openhome, etc) as they can cause a lot of FCs in my experience.
You might have your camera resolution on lowest settings. Try a higher setting and let us know. The default resolution is 640x480.

Checked the resolution of the camera and the pictures themselved and they're both 5MP, so I really don't know what the problem is now. It is rather frustrating though, when I zoom I want to see the details of the image not a fuzzy picture. Another thing I've just had happen to me is trying to copy over a 4.5GB MKV file at 720p I got the message "The file 'Up' is too large for the destination file system" I don't get that cause I have 6GB free on the phone and 6GB free on the 16GB micro SD. My phone hates me :'(
the 4.5gb MKV isn't a Samsung issue. It's a filesystem issue, relating to the default filesystem used on the sd card memory. FAT32 has a file size limit of 4gb.
It might seem a bit frustrating that you will have to re-encode that huge MKV, but considering that you can count on the fingers of one hand the smartphones that would even be able to smoothly play the video in that container in the first place, it's a small price to pay.
I know the phone could play it, it chews through my 720p copies of Top Gear without so much as a hiccup, and they're nearly the same bit-rate. I think you're right about counting the phones that could do that though because my HD2 didn't have a chance. I didn't know fat32 had a file size limit though, that's very useful information and thank you very much for that. Any ideas on the gallery app problem?

I had/have a HD2, and now a Vibrant that I am using.
I know what you are talking about with the pictures looking pixelated on the Vibrant when you zoom in, but look fine on the HD2. I too, would like a solution to this. Maybe another app does this.
I know exactly what you're talking about and it really is quite annoying. As if losing the flash wasn't bad enough, now even my old photos look bad on it. I've figured out firstly that the stock android gallery app has a 16 bit limit but that's not the issue I'd imagine. What I believe to be the culprit is that, as far as I can tell, what the image viewer does is it actually automatically downsizes all your photos which would explain the pictures' butchered quality. Of course it's just a theory but it seems to check out. Unfortunately I have yet to find a decent replacement app or a solution thus far. And not to dash your hopes but I hear the problem also exists in froyo. Kinda disheartening for such an awesome multimedia phone.

+1.. I also know what you mean, I had the HD2 and zooming in on the pictures on this phone sucks!. I am sure there is an image viewer somewhere that would work well
Yes! Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. I was beginning to think I was alone! I am by no means a developer, but I think it's probably the scaling algorithim, though it would be interesting to check it out on another phone running 2.1. Next time I activate a Captivate at work I'll check that as well, it'd be really weird if that one worked correctly!!
I've figured something out. When you look at photos in the actual camera app, and zoom in that viewer, the pictures look fine, it's only in the actual gallery app where the zoom doesn't work properly...
I definetly do not have the issue with zooming in on pictures (camera or gallery) and I have yet to have a FC on any app. You mentioned the browser, any other apps FC'ing on you?
Have you done anything (other than root if you have)?
Are you using a TK?
Can you give more details?
I know what you mean by zooming the pics. Try image viewer, its awesome and zooms in great

Well it's only the browser that's done it, and it's only happened once to me, so I'm really not worried about that one. A power cycle took care of it right then and there. As for the zooming, like I said in the camera app itself it works fine, but in the gallery app it's not too good. I'm not rooted (yet), and I have no task killer because I've heard more bad things than good things about those. Idk how else to describe the problem, it just seems like when I zoom in it's like the file is a very low resolution and gets very pixelated and when I check the properties I know it's a 5MP picture, so idk what's going on.
Something I never noticed so I just tested and you're right!
It's the way the built in gallery app works. It creates a thumbnail of all images and that's what it displays. You can even see the thumbnail images if you explore the phone memory. The only way around it is to download and use a different image viewer.
I suggest large image viewer! It is a bit spartan in terms of features and ui but it has the best image viewing of all the apps I tried! Btw the default image viewer basically makes a lower res bitmap of all your pictures and it's impossible (I think) to actually view the original images from within the gallery app. Why it would do this? I have no clue, seems like poor programming to me. Perhaps it's the cost we pay for the nifty though relatively pointless 3d effects.

Text editing - Craigslist posting nightmare

I am just having the hardest time making my craigslist ads which require me to cut and past the URLs of my photobucket images. I also need to edit in HTML into the posts and this is proving to be a nightmare on the transformer. In tablet form or docked.
It seems that I can't just click to place the cursor exactly where I want it and the cursor seems to always be moving to places I don't want it. Also trying to cut and paste works great sometimes and others it just seems unusable.
Should I maybe use a text editing app and then just cut and paste it over? Can anyone relate to the things I'm talking about? I'm new to Honeycomb so maybe there are a lot of little tricks I don't know yet.

getting a stylus may help with the fine aiming of moving the cursor. and if it moves around you may be hitting the trackpad so try turning that off.
but for what your doing, it may be best to make it all in a text editor and then copy/paste it in the browser.

Any suggestions for text editor apps?

well the included polaris will work pretty good, color note and basically any other note pad app will as well.
there are a couple apps that can make and create .txt documents and those should work as well.
Ill look around, thanks.

Just an update.
I am currently using Opera forced in desktop mode only. This is the fastest scolling and zooming browser there is. The only thing I hate is how opera functions when selecting text off of a page to copy. It is really cheap. I also like the fact that I can add any search engine to the browser. I couldnt stand how every time I did a Google search it would search through Google mobile, so I just added the main Google search and all was fixed.
Typing on forums has been a breeze for the most part with opera, now if I can just find a way to use the Native copy and paste on web pages it will be almost perfect. At least when editing text or web page URLs it uses the native highlight feature.
In response to the cursor moving, I have that problem and am pretty sure it has to do with the mousepad being set up for "touch to click". On a fullsize laptop, no big deal, but on the smaller keyboard I keep hitting it. As a result, that disable-mouse button gets a ton of use from me.
It was doing it to me while editing on the screen as well. It doesn't seem to be doing it with opera though so Im happy about that.
One weird thing I have noticed as too is that if I really get going and start typing fast, the keyboard will register double I inputs twice. So for example if I type the word that, it will sometimes show as ththat. This only happens when im typing at full pace though and only sometimes. I went to Verizon today to play with a zoom and couldn't get the zoom to recreate this issue, it was only running 3.0 also.
If you are talking about the same thing I'm thinking about, I think this is just a general Android bug. My 2.3.4 phone does it and the stock browser on my TF does it. I have a guess it has to do with text wrapping... but no idea if that's really it.
An easy way to see why I think it seems to be a text wrap issue is by zooming in a little and typing a few lines of text, then try to edit it. Then pull up the green caret move handle thing and notice that it moves where you didn't place it.
Another way is to get a keyboard with arrow keys (thumb keyboard) and select one line and press the down key... it sometimes jumps a line or two. Almost certain its because of the text reflow. I wish you could turn it off or Google would fix it. I HATE working on a long forum post or Outlook Web App on my phone because textarea editing is just a horrible experience.
Finally, I, too use Opera... I'm not a fan, but its the only browser fast enough and that doesn't try to reflow ANY text area. No other browser, that I know, uses text areas that do not reflow.
I completely agree about Opera.

Browser/Flash Question

Hey All, I've had my TF for about a month now, and while I do love the device. the one thing that is constantly annoying me is in the browser. I have the agent string set to "Desktop" and it displays almost all websites without a problem. The annoying thing is when I open up Facebook and click on a picture someone has posted, it loads the picture up at a large size (almost full screen) with flash, but when I try to scroll to the comments the picture stays up blocking the picture. Has anyone else had this problem or know a workaround for it? The closest that I have come is keeping Dolphin also installed on the TF with the agent string on that set to Phone so I can view without Flash freaking out. Thanks!
Wow over 40 views and no thoughts. Am I the only having this issue, or the only one too dumb to know how to fix it?
sorry i cant offer a solution, but i can agree with what youve described. Picture blows up, and ive noticed the most horrible lag during that time. I try closing the picture and it takes a good 3-4 seconds to close..
havent tried on any other browsers
