Hey guys, I want to pickup a new phone. I'm not interested in paying the 4G tax, and I just need something simple for my Sprint line.
Phone will be used for calls and wifi tether only. Given these circumstances, would I be frustrated with the speed of this device? I'll probably install the aosp 2.21 rom.
For those needs, I would have to probably recommend the Optimus S. Runs 2.2 out of the box, better processor, has a GPU, etc.

I agree with this. Yes, the Hero will be fine for those needs, but there are still better options.
Didn't catch the release of that one. Wad thinking Pre as alternative. I'll check it out. Thanks!

I second this. The LG Optimus S blows the Hero out of the water, even with the stock ROM and stock settings. I just got one today and I love it. I might actually hold off on rooting it for awhile, that's how good it is! I don't even need a task killer on it
I just tried out the Optimus.. I do like it, but there's no flash! Which sucks. But I may go with the Optimus.
One last question.
In terms of speed, could you rank these devices?
Pre, Hero, Optimus, Transform, Touch Pro 2. I included the TP2 because I hear it can be overclocked now. May make a difference.
Thanks!!
The Hero doesn't have native flash, either If anything will get Flash though, it would be the Optimus due to the better processing power.
In terms of speed: Optimus, Pre, Transform, Hero. I don't know much about the TP2.
The Optimus, believe it or not (due to the lower price), was MUCH snappier than the Transform. The Pre was decent, but AFAIK, Sprint doesn't really support the Pre anymore.

No problem, sir! BTW, consider buying the phone at Best Buy. I just bought my Optimus there, and they are so much better than the Sprint store (and you can get the Best Buy insurance instead of the crappy Sprint one).
classic, now were directing people away from buying a hero.. lmao! xda needs an optimus s section and quick!
Crap, now I'm accidentally giving Thanks to people haha. Darn this new layout.
Anyways yeah, I don't see why we would want to direct people to a more expensive, but less-powerful and lag-filled phone... The Optimus is free or $50 (depending where you get it), and it's so much better than the Hero. Plus it has Android 2.2 native

I hope it's soon... people should just move on ASAP. There really is no reason not to upgrade since the Optimus S is so cheap but powerful.
Some ppl still love the hero like me its the perfect design for a phone it could be a little faster but it has a very wide range of roms to choose from and still has a few active devs aosp your the best!

I've been looking at the G2. I've come from a Touch Pro 2 on WinMo to Android Port on TP2 to a Backflip to a Vibrant.
I kindof miss a hardware keyboard... but I don't know.
The Vibrant is great.
I guess all I need is some encouragement on why I should keep the Vibrant over the G2. Or vice versa. What do you think? If you could trade your Vibrant for a G2, would you?
Screen and cpu
It is easy to get caught up in the "Latest and Greatest", but .... screen is smaller and the cpu is slower.
One thing I have always noticed is too many ppl are into perfecting the phone rather than enjoying it once it is perfected. I like the galaxy and until they come up with a real big improvement rather than incremental....... I wouldn't change
my two cents worth........
If you want a hardware keyboard, get the G2. Both are great phones. I like the thin and lightness of the vibrant plus the gorgeous screen. Plus, i like the extra storage on the vibrant.
Sent from my Galaxy S using the XDA App
Is the CPU really slower? It may run at 800MHz but it is the new generation of the SnapDragon. MHz/GHz doesn't matter in some cases...
I would trade my Vibrant for a G2, mainly because I really miss the physical keyboard. I didn't think I would miss it, but once I started using the Vibrant full time I really could use the keyboard to do my long drawn out posts on DailyKos and other blogging sites that I work with.
In a month nobody is going to be talking much about the G2. Then what are you going to do? Trade your g2 for a mytouch hd just because you saw an unboxing video of it? The vibrant is a kickass phone... The g2 is going to pass like the mytouch slide.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
That's the thing. Is there any good qwerty phone coming out?
The G2 has the perfect build for a qwerty phone... as does the droid 2 (somewhat).
I just don't know. The Vibrant is hot but the G2 is also hot.
And Swype isn't so accurate... typing long posts as stated above is a bit hard to do.

If you like your OLED screen you will be out of luck with G2 it only has SLCD
Also GPU is better on vibrant with up to 92M triangles/sec
when G2 GPU only has up to 41M triangles/sec
Vibrant supports more video and audio codecs
Not sure about what CPU is better in all honesty the snapdragon, scorpion CPU's high mflops scores are overrated and only benefit in benchmarking not real world use.
G2 is nice if you want qwerty keyboard
and you want on time updates
plus lot more developers in XDA focus on HTC
And HTC phones have great build quality
IDK Ive always gone with HTC but im really liking the galaxy S

Maybe I'm just feeling insecure and need some security in keeping the Vibrant, or maybe I just need to buy a G2... Don't know.
Or maybe I should get the G2 and compare it to my vibrant for 14 days and return it within the grace period if I don't decide I want it.
I'd hang onto the Vibrant for just a little longer. I know the only reason myself and many other considered giving up the Vibrant is due to lack of support to fix issues the phone has. If Samsung/Tmobile were on it, people wouldn't have any real gripes about the Vibrant.
Forget the software issues for now. What's wrong with the Vibrant, or why should you keep it? I'd like a camera flash. That's all for me. I don't care about the slide out keyboard, I like the screen size and sleekness more than the G2, and I think it's a better looking for overall. HSPA+ would be a factor but isn't offered in the city I live in at the moment. I hear the G2 runs ultra smooth though, so I wouldn't consider the processor speed a factor. If you're n your remorse period, return it now. You don't want to take a chance on Samsung/Tmo or developers completely ridding this phone of issues. If you'd be paying full pop for the G2, just hold off for awhile longer. Vibrant could get software love, G2 could have issues arise, or another badass phone could come out and you'd have a "Should I stay with the G2 or go to XYZ phone?" thread.
Think of it this way.. People still use/support the G1, and it's still a decent phone. The Vibrant is far superior to it, despite issues. You won't have some useless old hunk of junk if you keep the Vibrant. It'll still be good for awhile.

A case for an already big phone for me... Nah
And by Touchwiz, believe me I've stripped it down more than you can imagine. I'm NOT referring to the Launcher. I'm referring to all the system deep modifications that bog down the Vibrant.
Samsung is a con because... well. Behold 2. Etc. Lack of support/timely updates.
I was expecting FroYo by sep 15. Lol. I've waited. It's October. We're on Eclair. Behind everyone. Well, I'm on JP3, but seriously. Where is it.
I know a lot of people have complained about FroYo's absence, and I didn't think I would get involved. But it's October 3rd.

If you look at the main complaints about the G2, its all about the hardware.
If you look at the complaints about the Vibrant, its mostly software.
You can change/fix software pretty easily. Hardware not so much.
The G2's hinge system is enough to make me love my vibrant so much more--I cannot wait until I hear all the whining about broken hinges.
Such a dumb design.

Get whatever suits your needs. Our opinions can only sway your own personal decision so far. I held onto my G1 from the day I got it because I wanted to see where Android would progress to. I considered getting the mytouch slide given the keyboard then i caught wind of this device. All shortcomings aside, this is the greatest device i've ever owned and I wont be giving it up until a predecessor if any is made.
It suits my needs for my everyday use and I as well thought I would need to have a keyboard but that's definitely not the case now. So my advice to you would be to try it out and see if the G2 would be a more fitting device for you. Good luck!
If Samsung steps up its game and matches the Vibrant's great hardware with great software, than the Vibrant vs G2 will be a must more interesting battle. However, as it stands, the Vibrant may (mostly) overshadow the G2 when it comes to hardware - aside from a few select areas like camera flash and HSPA+ - but it is really bogged down by sub par software.
In other words, what I am saying is unless there is someway of knowing for sure Samsung will support this thing until at least Gingerbread, release the updates on a moderately acceptable timeframe, and fix the **** problems we are having (their track record is not encouraging)... go with the G2. Plus you said you prefer hardware keyboard anyway, so no brainier.
Dude nobody can tell you how you should feel and what you should buy. If everyone here says to keep the Vibrant yet you prefer having keyboards, the choice should be easy. I wouldn't trade in for a G2 because the Vibrant suits my needs just fine... but that's me.
You need to decide.
Well im not happy..but wife moved us to verizon ( work ) hate to leave sprint.. and my hero.. but no choice in the matter atm.. Wife rules...lol

Wow, nice, I'd love to have an Incredible, and I agree, I only like HTC Android phones
HTC is by far the best because of their overall build quality and support. Samsung and Motorola are both mixed in terms of which devices they support, and the pace at which they release updates. Some devices like the Behold II and almost all lower end Motorola phones get the shaft and hardly get any updates. Half of them are still at 1.5 or 1.6... but only the high end ones like Droid, Droid X, and Droid 2 (basically all Verizon ones) get satisfactory updates. I think Samsung is similar. HTC is much more consistent.
I don't think you'll miss the Hero at all, except for maybe the hardware buttons instead of capacitive buttons. But I tried out my friend's Incredible, and man was it smooth.. and it was the stock ROM

I think the INC is pretty highend.. screen size aside... lol I mean its not a monster like the evo etc.. but spec wise should be alot better than the hero ive been running all year..
I mean outside of the few games.. wth would I need a dual core chip and a giant screens etc. for right now anyway? To open my email faster and see more of it,lol
Just joking of course.. but really the INC should keep me happy for awhile.. til i get bored...etc..

I don't think anyone hates the N1, it's just not "new" anymore and therefore not as cool as the "newer" G2... you know the drill with us techies.
I don't think you'd be unhappy going from the G2 to the N1. I personally can't understand how you'd be able to like the N1 and not like the NS though... they're basically the exact same device minus the manufacturer's name. (putting my flame retardant suit on)

No flame here. I completely agree. I love the N1 too, but it is a year old now, the specs just aren't good considering what you can get now.
I agree on the Nexus S point as well. NS is the next iteration past the N1, and it really is a solid device.
My issue with the NS is more of an anti samsung thing. With them dropping the ball on the galaxy froyo updates I just can't back em. Plus I the N1 was sexier. Imo.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
I also think about picking up an N1 to fiddle with. Love my G2, but I'm afraid I've become addicted to seeing what our brilliant devs can cook up. So, the idea of having both a daily driver and a toy is attractive.
Regarding the NS: I'm wary of Samsung. I'm sure it's a solid device and, having been tapped my Google to be the next Nexus, will continue to reflect the bleeding edge of Android for at least another year. However, Samsung's record of slow updates and less than solid build quality puts me firmly in the HTC fanboy house.
Not going to lie. The new 10.1 tablet is tempting even with Samsung written on it.

I really want this device especially running stock my main issues are these.
1. Upgrading to 2.3 and so on. Especially now thay T-Mobile might change to att they might not care about tmobile branded devices. (This does not apply to rooters)
2.battery power. I hate charging every phone I had after 8 hr. This is my main issue i heard that it was suppose use only both cores when needed so battery should be better but yet nobody has confirm it.

Being LG I'd be very hesitant. Like how the OS is left mainly untouched though.
Aesthetically isn't the prettiest, but damn did that look responsive and quick.
Can't wait for a dual core Nexus from HTC! (Guy can dream can't he)
I may get it with my upgrade in July, but I'd like to see how hackable it is first.
Personally I wouldn't buy another T-Mobile phone. The merger with ATT is likely to be approved and the news on the street is that ATT is going to get rid of the T-Mobile 1700 3G frequency which means that this phone would be made obsolete relatively soon.

I never bought an LG before because they looked cheap BUT with the Optimus 2X and 3D it's obvious that LG put all their know-how,efforts and will to compete with their Korean enemy aka samsung!

PaulObrien,Formel,Cyanogen and other big names of XDA are planning to dev on optimus 2X so if you want the same amount of quality custom roms then the LG Opti 2X is the flagship

Ooh, really? Link? I would love to read what these guys said about it, especially Cyanogen of course.
What do you plan on upgrading to?
Just wanted to get some discussion going here.
I was planning on going to a Droid, or if my dad'll sell me his, a Droid 2. What about you?

I already upgraded to a G2x a few months ago. It was just getting too slow for me.
Sounds pretty cool!! Is there root/custom ROM capability yet?
Anything faster than this phone -___-
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Evo flashed to boost or virgin mobile if I can get the money.
Probably an lg optimus v (they need some devs...) or a htc hero if i can't get enough money.
I still think that this phone's look and feel is the one of the best. For instance, I really don't like the Samsung Galaxy S very much, even though it's really fast, because it kinda feels cheap/flimsy. Of course, it's not.
And, with the right ROMS, you can get a decent amount of speed out of it.
im going to upgrade to the HTC Amaze 4G
