Just got my G2 - G2 and Desire Z General

Moved over from Big Red to Tmo to save some moola.
Loving my G2 thus far. Allready perm rooted and on CM6. Also dropped in my seidio 1750 from my Inc. I will enjoy this phone till I pick up a Nexus One.

Just saying that I wouldn't really strive to have a Nexus One if I already had a G2. The G2 hardware is pretty amazing and the Nexus One is sadly getting old at this point...

Yeah, that's the dumbest thing i ever heard. Have fun with that out of date nexus. Lol
G2 with ExtraHotSauce v0.2!!

Nexus has great build quality, is a great weight, slim, has a coloured trackball and a really good screen. It's great if you don't like hardware keyboards, would love to own a monumental piece of Android/HTC history.

Absolutely all very true points. But it isnt nearly worth your money as a daily primary device.

...thats a pretty expensive hobby of collecting phones lol

No no. I'm not trolling. I love this g2 thus far. Its a great device. But I do want to pick up a N1 for a trial or two. If anything ill make it a dedicated gps.
All the N1 hate makes me sad. And I DO NOT like the Nexus S at all.

I don't think anyone hates the N1, it's just not "new" anymore and therefore not as cool as the "newer" G2... you know the drill with us techies.
I don't think you'd be unhappy going from the G2 to the N1. I personally can't understand how you'd be able to like the N1 and not like the NS though... they're basically the exact same device minus the manufacturer's name. (putting my flame retardant suit on)

No flame here. I completely agree. I love the N1 too, but it is a year old now, the specs just aren't good considering what you can get now.
I agree on the Nexus S point as well. NS is the next iteration past the N1, and it really is a solid device.

My issue with the NS is more of an anti samsung thing. With them dropping the ball on the galaxy froyo updates I just can't back em. Plus I the N1 was sexier. Imo.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2

I also think about picking up an N1 to fiddle with. Love my G2, but I'm afraid I've become addicted to seeing what our brilliant devs can cook up. So, the idea of having both a daily driver and a toy is attractive.
Regarding the NS: I'm wary of Samsung. I'm sure it's a solid device and, having been tapped my Google to be the next Nexus, will continue to reflect the bleeding edge of Android for at least another year. However, Samsung's record of slow updates and less than solid build quality puts me firmly in the HTC fanboy house.
Not going to lie. The new 10.1 tablet is tempting even with Samsung written on it.

Well...It's been fun guys.. (Switching N1 for Epic)

I love my Nexus One. It was my introduction to android and boy, was it a good one. I sold my iPhone 3gs for it and never looked backed. One thing has been nagging at me all the while though.
While I love my N1 and agree it is a power house of a phone, the multitouch issues just drive me nuts.
I love gaming on a phone, and while android isn't known for its amazing games like iDevices (c'mon, we all know this) all I can really get out of it is emulation. With the N1's bad multitouch problems, its hard as heck to play anything decent. So I decided I'm jumping the N1 ship and switching to the epic.
So, post in this thread if you, like me, are deciding to switch to another android device, and what's your reason.
Hito
So long as your still an Android lol
The Epic looks nice, but im not a Sprint guy
See you at the next Dev Phone
Aside from the better multitouch, I'm sure you'll also appreciate the better GPU. Congrats on the good choice of upgrades.
For me? Personally? Multi-touch is a TAD bit sketch sometimes But honestly? I have an Xbox 360 for my gaming needs.. iPhone games are nice and cool and good looking (especially on iPhone 4) but it's a terrible OS. and I dislike sprint.
I just got a Nexus One today again, after not having one for a month and i am so happy. I'd rather have the phone do things like tether and torrent and BE PRODUCTIVE rather thank play games on it. And sure, every now and again i do play games so i have emulators and knock-off tetris'. IMO

Great choice, I have a vibrant and a n1, and im gonna say I wont pick my n1 up again till it gets gingerbread, and even then.
The sgs is awesome for gaming. The gpu is Amazimg. Its so nice to have proper Multitouch, if the n1s MT was better it would have been so much nicer.
Congratulations and you will love it as much as I love my vibrant I'm sure .

How much are you selling your N1 for?
I'm buying a G2 on preorder (if that ever happens). If not, getting it the first day.
I never really liked keyboards on a phone, that's why I took back my MT3GSlide and ordered a nexus. IMO it just makes the product bulkier. But the G2 is almost like a nexus with a hidden keyboard...And a brand new processor.
But that's still just a dream, until they "reveal" it. I'm starting to think leaking is a new advertising technique lol.
And I'll still keep the N1 for ****s and giggles, it is a dev phone after all

Just sold a few hours ago. It was priced at $380. It has a scratch on the back cover and a scuff on the bottom antennae cover as well as wear on the right side of the casing. It was for t-mobile with boot loader unlocked, so I say that is more than a fair price.

Definitely a fair price given the condition. Good luck with the Epic man... I was tempted to switch to Spring, but I just can't stomach the thought of not being able to easily switch phones around.
Why not the vibrant? If your a gamer I guess its the right phone for you. However you will miss your n1. I bought a captivate used it for a 1 1/2 month and returned it. I am not a gamer. I need to multi task. Of captivate was nice but not for me. I was able to do more on my n1 and it was nice to have froyo. I might wait for galaxy tab though. That looks nice. Well have fun with a new device. Its always fun getting a new toy.

I thought about it, but I really miss keyboards for emulation. The cliq was horrible! The bulk never bothers me as I never pocket a phone anyway. I already miss my N1, but that's because I don't have an android replacement yet ! XD.
Another reason is the Dev community. While the N1 community trumps nearly any other with great guys such as in this thread, I feel that with the galaxy S line will do what the N1 was supposed to do, but never got the chance, and that's going to all major US carriers. So my hopes are that this will bring out a great community hopefully like that of the N1.
Also my iPad is up on eBay so I can buy an android tab....

Nexus one envy

So I just played with an N1 for the very first time and must say I wish this phone had come to Sprint as planned a few months back.
While I love my Evo there's just something about the N1 I like more. The trackball for notifications is wicked and the size is just right. I love the size of the screen on Evo but after all this time I still can't get comfortable using it as a phone.
Anyone else wish the Nexus were available as a cdma?

Nexus/Evo same phone pretty much. The nexus has a amoled display and stock Android 2.2. Other than that the Evo is the same thing as the nexus pretty much just with a few upgrades and extras when it comes to hardware, so in actuality, you sort of already have a nexus one sort of on steroids

Wait until the N2 comes out then you'll really have phone envy. That thing is prime to be a benchmark just as the N1 was
I had the nexus 1 and gave it to my girlfriend when the evo came out. I am a sense lover so i liked the evo a lot when it came out. Stable Sense wasnt ported to the n1 at that time. Now though whenever i hold my girls n1 i am envious. It feels perfect in the hand. Yes i like the trackball too. great for typos in the middle of a sentence. all the different trackball notifications are great too. A differnt color for every scenario. i loved the N1 docks (home and car) too. The only thing i disliked about the n1 was the screen. While it looked great indoors, outside you couldnt see anything, I mean nothing at all. It was like the screen was turned off. the N1 has some crazy talented devs too. Cant wait till next week. Hopefully the Nexus 2 rumor isnt a rumor and it'll be available with gingerbread next week.
Yeah I felt the N1 its nice in hand but once you go 4.3 you cant go back.
I would give up my Evo for a Nexus One any day... I love that phone!!! =)
Still wish I could have one, but they are really hard to find and quite expensive! Even after all this time!

The nexus 2 isn't coming out next week >< I read where it was just delayed due to hardware issues.
Besides, it's made by samsung...so IMO either get a nexus 1 or stick with the evo.
The Nexus2 or Nexus S so its called... will likely not hold a candle to either. All the hype from Samsung about the galaxy S phones and none of them are all the good.... in fact I think they are just now getting froyo.. imagine how long it will take for them to get gingerbread... if they ever do!

+1 I love HTC phones, I will say that sometimes their build quality feels rushed.. but they pump out a lot of phones. My hero and evo have had great DEV support and HTC does a pretty decent job with updates.
Samsung, IMO, is the worst when it comes to quality, dev support and updates... it's just not a good idea to have samsung make a 2nd generation nexus IMO... so so sad
i cant say i like the galaxy series, the epic feels cheap and somewhat clunky to me, htc phones have their problems as well but i'd take htc over sammy any day, it seems crazy that just a few years ago htc was selling great phones left and right and still reporting quarterly losses, now they seem to be doing better then ever and it looks like they are really starting to step it up when it comes to developing sense, hopefully they will only pick up more steam
I had the nexus one the day it came out..payed the 529 plus tax n was loving it..it was a very snappy phone running cyanogen 5..update were awesome..trackball notificatons were cool..but basically the evo is the big brother of the nexus one..evo is the ROOT of HTC

I tried out the nexus one for 30 days on at&t early this year when I was still an iphone user and must say the N1 is the DAMN SEXIEST PHONE EVER MADE! I ended up sending mine back because I couldn't justify spending $500+ on a phone. Even though I still miss the hell out of that phone I'm not sure I could get up my evo's bigger screen and 4G data.

The botched touch screen was a serious deal breaker for me with the Nexus. I had one for a while, and I liked it, but I can't go less than 4.3 now. I just can't.
The only thing I love about the N1 is the fact that it gets lightning fast updates.
Engadget just posted an article starting the nexus one will be getting gingerbread in the next few days! That is one thing to admire about it
What about the kickstand! If the nexus had a kickstand and front facing camera .... oh boy I would be tempted to get it. (Again) had the nexus before got bored of vanilla. Just flash cyanogen 6.1 on the evo. There you go you have a nexus minus the trackball. I mean if I had a nexus that's the rom I would run. Might as well. Same same.

hoping for a Gingerbread-powered G2 as Google Nexus Two by HTC

pretty sure sammy is not favourite of most of us...
especially with all those odin this and that download mode etc...
wouldn't it be nice to have G2 to become Nexus Two for both ATT and TMO?
Htc needs to make a true nexus sequel not some nexus knockoff by samsung that looks like a shiney turd

Just isn't right. It is a crying shame. No device looks and feels like the Nexus One in your hand. It may have a few quirks but IMO it still the best device out there. No, also everything the name implies. The Nexus One (and most likely the Nexus S) you can build pretty much straight off AOSP after adding the drivers that are not open source. This is not true for the G2 as far as I know. Also, for those running unrooted they won't get the same fast updates.
Another point is that some of us think the Nexus S hurts the Nexus brand.

I don't think anyone with any sense of business will say that at all. I mean no offense, but hear me out. First, I'm not getting the S. Not a real upgrade, to me.
There is no real Nexus brand. It's nothing more than a silly name, really. Any profit from such a device that Google may see is miniscule at best. The 1 didn't sell many units, so not much profit there. Factor in they probably ordered a lot more than they sold, based upong Google calling it a massive failure. Then, toss in the fact that only uber-geeks bought it... The S is much the same, though sales will be theoretically be better with discount pricing, in-store sales, and better advertising. Profit will still be minimal, in my opinion. Google won't see a large revenue increase because of the S. Sounds like I'm agreeing with you so far, but I'm just saying there's no real Nexus brand.
But, figure there is a Nexus brand. The S, with in-store sales, discount pricing, and better advertising, will appeal to a wider audience than the 1. More Android users now, more people know about Froyo and Gingerbread. The S helps with brand recognition and gets the name out. It's like selling out: you're fan base hates you, nut you increase your fan base ten fold.
It's not what you or I want, but it doesn't hurt the brand, if one even exists.

Thanks for reading it literally and missing the point. The webstore was a failure, hence profits couldn't have been high at all, which is further evidence there is not much of a brand. Better?

I think that HTC should first make phones with better HW quality.
Speakers, t-screen, 3G connectivity are a joke on the N1 compared to other phones.
I wouldnt take another chance at HTC. They screwed up with the N1.

People shouldn't worry about if or when gingerbread is coming out on the G2. We have a very strong dev. section and backing of the greatest coders period. If you don't believe me then look at the Mytouch4G developmental thread and you quickly take note that topics of the 1st page date back a week. The G2 is successor of the god father of android.
OP, do you want a keyboard, a T-Mobile protection plan, LED notifications, or 4G. Yes, the Nexus S has a 16gb storage capacity but that only tells me that google has finally fixed the problem of android only viewing 2gb of available internal memory. At least I hope so because if they didn't then there will be alot of Nexus S owners upset that their device only claims 1.2 gb of internal memory.
The only device I see ever knocking the G2's crown off is the G3.
it really seems like samsung is rebadging their galaxy s phone to every carrier... this one has gingerbread but it's only a short time until every other high end phone gets gingerbread too. Samsung is actually skipping 2.2 with this release though. good for them ~_~
EDIT: where the hell is all this g3 talk coming from? is this something I haven't seen yet or is it all hypothetical
P.s. op, the overclock on this phone is fcuking fantastic.

Hypothetical, just stating that the phone is really good and would probably only be succeeded by a G3.
I will keep this device until the g3 comes out for sure. This is a great device and samsung has a horrible build quality IMHO. The only thing Samsung has over the G2 is their 4" Super AMOLED screen. G2 has a respectable 3.7" Super TFT and is comparable, just smaller but not by much...

I'll admit, I got a little excited when I saw the new Nexus was coming out...then I saw it was S and not 2...and that it was made by Samsung...and then that it wasn't the true successor the Nexus 1.
It's like meeting a really hot woman...and finding out she's a dude...with a bigger penis that you...and he's a minor...and your best friend already dated him...and he has a better car than you...and your last gf left you for him/her.
Just utter disappointment and disgust all around. If Sammy was going to plaster a name like Nexus on a phone, they should have done a hell of a lot better than the Nexus S.
Until the G3 comes out (which will probably have a dual-core, more memory, a keyboard, ice cream, be 4.5" SMIAAMOLED (Super Massive Incredibly Awesome Amoled) and wouldn't use the Nexus S to eat it's morning cereal, then I'm sticking with my G2.
Plus, I finally own a phone all the best devs work on, and that makes me a happy guy.

@AbsolutZeroGI....Sounds like you were really traumatized by the whole incident.Seriously though, you really should talk to someone.
The nexus S has the same proc as all the other sgs phones. Dont get me wrong, I like the screen and 2.3 but I could never switch. Lack of 4G, crappy design and no sd slot is a fail imo.

Hate to break it to you, but Vision doesn't have 4G either. It has only 3G, despite FALSE ADVERTISING. Not the only lie in the spec sheet... they also said it had 4GB eMMC, when the chip is permanently set to 2.1GB.

that only tells me that google has finally fixed the problem of android only viewing 2gb of available internal memory. At least I hope so because if they didn't then there will be alot of Nexus S owners upset that their device only claims 1.2 gb of internal memory.

You seem to be thoroughly confused.
I suggest you go read the wiki. It explains everything.

Nexus S or LG Optimus 2X

So I'm debating what the next phone is that I want to get. Should I either get the Nexus S or wait and get the LG Optimus 2X when it comes out.
Pros of Nexus S: Cyanogen, 'nuf said.
Cons of Nexus S: Not that much more that the N1 really. I currently have an N1.
Pros of Optimus 2X: Tegra2, 1080p, etc.
Cons of Optimus 2X: not even out yet so unknown at this point.
I'd love to hear what you all have to say on the matter, thoughts, criticisms, pros/cons, etc.
Just wait! In all likelihood, the price of the Nexus S will go down by the tIme the LG comes out.
Plus, you'll have to see how LG will modify Android too
I'd wait on the optimus 2x. It'll probably be great, but you don't want to be one of the people to find out first that it isn't. Wait a week after release, read reviews, then buy.
On the other hand, if you're satisfied with the nexus s reviews, get it. Sure, it won't have the highest specs in a month, but that doesn't mean it'll be trash.

you know this is the nexus ONE section? :L
I'd go for the Optimus
As it stands, the LG. It's a monster.
Between the two...hands down the LG Optimus.
I'd take the LG, but imo LG phones are bad. I've had several and never had a good experience. Their UI isn't great either, but like I said it's all opinion. So.. I would wait for reviews or wait a bit longer after that for something even better
I would say the lg also. Digging how the tegra is shaping up. Just not sure about lg's build quality, or if there will be support from the community here. Comm support is a must for me since Im learning as I go.
I think this is relevant to the N1 forum since op is asking about what to get after it.
Idk. I just got the MT4G a month ago. I plan on getting a new phone when an HTC phone with the 1.5Ghz dual core Snapdragons are released. It depends on how often you upgrade. If you get a new phone every 6 months, I'd get the Nexus, but if you're the type to wait out your contract I'd say the LG.

I tend to get a new phone every year, contract up or not. Kind of depends on funds at the time.
I'm agreeing that the LG is going to be a monster, but am afraid that there will not be the community support that the N1/S has. So far, Cyan seems to focus on HTC devices, and I really like what Cyan does.
So far, I prefer vanilla Android with tweaks here and there such that ADW does, but don't like the interfaces that Moto, and Samsung, etc use. So if someone comes out with a good custom ROM for the LG, I'm there.
I have a feeling though that as soon as I get my tax return, I'm going to get antsy and end up getting the Nexus S, won't be able to wait for the LG to come out, then it'll come out and I'll be all disappointed. At the same time though, all these bad ass Android phones have come out that are superior the the N1, but because of the community support, I haven't been too disappointed to regret having gotten the N1.
In the end, I think it boils down to community support, with the NS will have plenty of that the LG may not.
It's a no brainer, got to be the LG 2X.
The Samsung NS looks like a soap dish.
First, this is in the wrong section I think..
Second and most importantly, we have no idea how rootable the Optimus 2X will be... if it's totally locked down, how would you feel about not being able to mod it?

I disagree, who better to ask what I should get after having and N1 for a year, than other people who have an N1 and might also be thinking to get another phone.

That's kind of why I was posing the question, others might have a better idea as to how LG is with their devices and if they tend to be easy or hard to root, good/bad build quality, warranty and support issues. Is LG lenient with software hack like HTC is, or are they strict and won't service a phone that's been rooted.
I understand that the phone isn't out, but I'm trying to start my research early to start building a mental image of what my options are so that I can make a well informed choice when the time comes, instead of buying something just because it's there and everyone is talking about it.
Your cool in this section bro. But if your leaning toward the Ns, then I would wait for the next HTC device...just a thought
I loved my Nexus One, but the S blows it out of the water. I love my Nexus S.

didnt you have a n1 with a test build of gingerbread? how do the two compare since you ran gb on the n1...
whatever you do, wait until march 2011 or so ... by then a couple of tegra-2 phones will be out and the mistake of the Samsung Nexus S will be long forgotten.
I'm keeping my Nexus One until then

The S is smoother, the animations are much better, and it's snappier. This is all due to the improved hardware.
It's the same Gingerbread experience though. I'm badgering my friend to hook me up with Honeycomb.
The software is identical, but the S takes much better advantage of it.
