Better than the mytouch 4g?

Just wondering besides the screen and gingerbread what makes this phone better than the mytouch. Just curious as to why so many people want this phone when the mytouch is better in almost evey way. Please no flaming this is a real question as to why people would want this phone instead of a ohone that's already out that's equal if not better.

I want my updates in a timely manner, not when tmo/htc/samsung/moto/bob from down the street want to give them out.

sold my i9000 to buy this phone because of pure android! in my opinion hardware doesn't mean anything when your software is bad like it was on my i9000. google will always aim for a good running android on their phones!

- Pure Google (stock android)
- All soft keys ( I hate the mytouch keys)
- Google's actual developer phone
- Nexus sounds better than MyTouch

Direct updates and fast updates.
No need to root it to remove unnecessary softwares since it comes with none.
More UMTS bands supported, almost it will work on 3G in the globe, forget about ATT but it supports 2100 and 900. This is a personal reason since I won't use it in the US.
MT4g keys collected so much dust in just few days of using, I think soft keys are more durable when you take this into account.

As others said, it comes down to vanilla Android - my nexus one was one of my favorite phones because it was pure android. When I got the evo and vibrant I kinda twitched when I wasn't on vanilla android (it really is a very different experience).
Not to mention, the vibrant still being on 2.1 is a JOKE (altho I've flashed froyo) - so with the nexus S, having the latest updates and essentially being Google's "test device" is excellent.

Because the MyTouch 4g has a worse processor, a worse GPU, a worse display, a worse touch screen, and well, is ugly. Oh and the Nexus S is AOSP.
Note: "ugly" = personal preference no offense intended

It's rather difficult for me to say.
I have MT4 and the screen is good, plus wifi calling is very handy when I need it.
But NS should have larger and better screen.

I've seen a lot of posts anderdroid. You seem to be some sort of arrogant samsung fanboy. All I hear from you is samsung is the best and all other devices are crap...
Do you happen to work for samsung by any chance?

Chill out guys... It's phones, phones, phones, phones. No need to get all heated.

Echoing what others have said, but its true. A lot comes down to getting timely updates direct from Google.
I had a Hero before my Nexus One and although the phone was solid, the lack of updates made it a very disappointing experience. Won't do ' non-vanilla' again until manufacturers/carriers prove they will update their phones.

I have a MT4G and a Vibrant and hopefully will pick up a Nexus S tomorrow morning. The MT4g is a very nice solid phone. Having said that I must say I do prefer the Vibrant. I really cannot put my finger on why I like the Vibrant so much better.. I fooled around with the MT4G and let the remorse period end and now I have the phone. I am going to sell the MT4G. Once again though it is a very very good phone. One of the best all around phones I have ever had. Just cannot forge a connection with it.

myTouch 4G is THE phone!! if u have 4G in ur area. Brilliant specs. But I agree its ugliest looking phone ever. But as long u cover it its fine and excellent phone. I wouldnt go for Nexus S if I already had myTouch 4G. Dual Cores are round the corner. But I m fine with the specs of the Nexus S. No 4g here anyways.
PS: Nexus S is gonna be my first native android phone. Woohoo
But I have toyed around most of the android phones of either friends and family

dude, I had the same exact experience.

Ok, still tossing between the two devices. Biggest reason is the $300 price difference. Both have nice features.
Nexus S:
Love that it will get updates in a timely manner
slimmer, sexier
better screen
No 3g so with this and better screen hopefully better battery life
Larger screen
MT4G:
4G
More hardware buttons
Micro SD card slot, (options)
T-Mobile insurance to cover any time of damage
I've only used the Nexus S for a day so I'm still going to compare and see if its worth paying more for it. Any other key reasons I'm missing? Just trying to get as much information/feedback before making a decision.

If you want the best and latest, nexus S is the one...but to me also It doesn't give out anything significant over MT4G..Yes faster updates is definitely one plus of Nexus...but if you're on XDA, you most probably be into custom ROMs, and mostly within a week new updates come to popular phones..so that's not such a big thing...same goes for pure google exp...if you don't want custom UI...there are ROMs available to do that..
On the other hand MT4G gives you 4G, WiFi calling and looks are subjective..to me MT4G don't look bad though not as sexy as nexus S though...but as above poster said its $300 more...its not definately worth that IMO

How did you come up with this number? Compare the unlocked prices,
MT4G (contract free and locked) is 449 , NS unlocked and contract free is 529.

Arrogant Samsung fanboy? Everything I said in my reply was true the only thing the MyTouch 4g has on this is removeable storage and HSPA+. Which are 'necessities' at best. If you absolutely need removeable storage or more than 16gb than the Nexus S isn't for you. Other than that, I get the feeling that HTC fanboys down talk Samsung wrongly and uneducatedly so I like to shove it in their faces .
I guess I am an arrogant Samsung fanboy. Or at least, Galaxy S> fanboy. Anything prior to Galaxy S I won't say anything about. The Galaxy S line is 2nd best only to the Nexus S

Yes even on eBay you get the slightly used ones for ~ $300-350 in bidding..

What better than samsung vibrant?

Hey.
I am thinking of getting android phone, and samsung vibrant is on my list, but I want to know what is better than vibrant at the moment?
Any other andriod phones better than vibrant at the moment that has good features?
I cannot afford Nexus S at the moment as its very expensive without any contract.

You may find other phones that people claim is faster, such as g2 or mytouch 4g or something...but I have yet to see another android phone with the amazing gpu performance of the vibrant..plus, with a few tweaks, this phone is faster than lightning...
But to be fair, Samsung support for the phone isn't all the best. Don't expect timely updates and such. However, our dev community here is awesome and with it, you probably wont miss support from Samsung...

Vibrant and Nexus S are bascily the same, a bit different.
umm... i really can't think of any other phone. Vibrant has filled my needs, but if you plan NOT to put a custom rom on it, or Root it... then... dont get the vibrant, samsung has quit on us, and the devs are the only reason this section is alive.

I dont know how to root or what roms are, etc, but I was waiting for 2.2 I heard it had good features.
So but now that 2.2 is not coming out are there any roms that can fill that gap?

YES.
If your looking for a 2.2, there are some awesome ROMS.
Nero, Ginger Clone, and Axura are the most popular currently.
They DO have a FEW bugs, but they're pretty small ones.
there has been a LEAKED froyo(2.2) rom, if you want a stock one, there is one.
I think you'd love a Vibrant. Before you get irritated, when you buy it, open it right there, and in front of the guy who sold it to you check if the GPS works, some new ones still don't work, and if it doesn't ask for another, and another if you have to, but be sure to make the GPS work wether you use GPS or not, you'll get annoyed later.
Also, if you don't know how to root or flash custom ROMs, there are PLENTY of EASY STEP-by-STEP tutorials to do it.

Just get the nexus S if you don't want to root. Bad side of it is it doesn't have a external storage.

Yup no ext SD was a definite deal breaker for me. Other then that it's a very nice phone.

The mt4g is a great phone for the casual person. But i wouldnt trade my vibrant for it, Im gonna wait for the fabled galaxy s2.

I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting a Nexus S today. I love my Vibrant and I'm keeping it as I've had loads of fun with it because of all the community support. Macnut R14 was and is still my rom of choice with the phone and it's very smooth and not that buggy at all - and my GPS works.
Having said that, the reason I got the NS is due to direct Google support. Considering Gingerbread is out now and Samsung has yet to deliver Froyo to 3 of the 4 GS models stateside, I finally made the decision to drive something I know is going to get timely updates. If you're not going to root get the Nexus the trade offs make it about even. If you are going to root then the Vibrant could a strong choice considering what it has over the NS. I know I'll still be here flashing roms for my Vibrant even though I have a different phone to play on now.

If I didn't mind being on Sprint, I'd say the Sprint HTC EVO is better in some respects than the Vibrant. No other phones come to mind. I also still consider the Vibrant to be the best Android powered phone on T-Mobile ATM. FYI, I don't like phones with built-in physical keyboards so I tend to immediately rule those out. The lack of both the SD card slot and gorilla glass on the screen are deal killers for me on the Nexus S when comparing it to the Vibrant. The Nexus S offers nothing I want which I don't already have (EXT4 file system) or won't get in the future (Gingerbread). Timely updates aren't worth it to me.

For the price of the Vibrants right now this is the best bang for your buck stock or not. Fast processor, very customizable, 14gig storage STOCK with an external slot to increase that to only the limits of microSD cards.
My opinion is the casual user will not notice a difference in 2.1 2.2 or 2.3 aside from some cosmetics which can be imitated by many free market apps. Casual user.....
For the non casual user I will reiterate what my fellow enthusiast have already pointed out. We are blessed with some REALLY talented ROM developers that have been nothing but generous with their time and efforts.
I have never gone to a manufacturer for support on any phone I have owned. Majority of the time the communities solve the problem 1000x faster.
I would also like to point out I am not biased to this phone because I own it lol, it just happens to be the one I own currently. I for one LOVE my Vibrant. I have had a g1, my touch, every iphone and some in between.

I have only used two other android phones: the Mytouch 4G and the G2. Both are hands down a much better user/android experience than the Vibrant i now own.
The only thing that makes me think about keeping the vibrant over these other phones is that the vibrant kicks their asses when it comes to audio playback, the quality is noticeably better.
Appart from that, battery life on the vibrant is lame, the screen is big but the colors are off, withes are actually blueish. The stock software is horrible, touchwiz is a joke, seriously, so is the fact that this thing still runs 2.1.
For the more that people talk about the speed of this phone, i found it to be incredibly laggy and slow, from apps to file transfers.
Ironically the best thing about the vibrant is that it made me use my phone a lot less than the Mt4G or the G2. The G2 made me a very anti-social person.

Currently have the iphone 4 from a trade I did with my nexus one. Going back to android! Stuck on which to choose the nexus S or the vibrant. Seems as if both phones are pretty much the same. Save a few hundred with the vibrant or go with the S

To get full flash in browser, and to get GPS to work fully (if it does not work, hopefully it will) what ROM is the best to flash? And by flashing that rom, will I lose any of the stock rom features?
Because my vibrant will have stock 2.1

I said the same thing to the T-Mobile Reps. a couple months ago The phone has actually changed the way I use smartphones. Before I was always tethered to my smartphone, now I have to make sure I don't forget to pick it up when I go or leave some place. I don't really use it that much. It's just not fun. I tend to carry my notebook with me, now, and of course my ZuneHD
I think my next phone will almost certainly have a full QWERTY slide-out. Swipes way of automatically adding typos to the dictionary is annoying. I spent like an hour last night just removing typos that kept registering as words when trying to send texts and stuff.

My thought is that the Vibrant is the best media device on the market right now. Great codec support, best screen, excellent storage.
I've considered buying the Nexus S to use as a phone and to keep the Vibrant like it's an iPod Touch, just a movie/music/game device.

I'm still in the market for a new phone, and had my heart set on the Epic from the start. However, when I started delving deeper into the different phones, I started feeling apprehensive toward the Epic.
Why I want it:
Video/picture quality seems better than the other phones I was looking at
5row QWERTY
Non-smudgy back plate
Good stock SD card
Super AMOLED
Why I'm apprehensive toward it:
It's running 2.1 and people think Samsung is abandoning the phone
Ideally, I wanted a 4 or 4.3in display
To get 2.2 and faster speeds, I'd have to use a ROM -- I have no idea how to do it, and I also don't like the themes most of the community ROMs have.
The other phones I was interested in were the EVO 4g, the Nexus S, the Droid X, and maybe another Galaxy S phone.
So, my question to the Epic 4g community: How do you like the phone? Have you tried any of the other phones I've listed? Am I going to get shafted by Samsung and never get a 2.2 update, or is it just as easy to flash the leaked 2.2?

I lovemy epic. Greatest phone I've had. It does everything I want. I got the epic to future proof myself.
Itsvery easy to flash the leaked froyo. You don't even gotta be rooted! Also, theleaked froyo is bascally a release candidate, being almost complete but still lacking little things like bluetooth audio out.
If those are the phones on our short list, get the epic. When samsung finally releases official final froyo,those phones will have nothing on the epic.
If you can't wait for froyo, then a5least get a new dualcore phone so you can be sure you won't be left behind

Agreed. The epic is absolutely fantastic. Even on 2.1 it's vastly better than the evo, which my girlfriend has. The nexus s however looks great and if that was on sprint it'd be a toss up for me. Don't listen to all the nay saying going on right now. Samsung easily had the best camera, screens and processor combo available for the current gen. Once you go oled it'd be hard to go back. I just recently flashed the new trulyepic 1.2 rom and imo, that's the way to go right now if want froyo. Runs fantastic.

Well the first question I'd have for you is what carrier are you looking at? Because you just listed a bunch of phones in the OP that are on different carriers. As far as the Epic is concerned, I love it ... it has a LOT of issues, including Samsung's Froyo delay that you mentioned, but it's still one of the fastest phones out there (with a kick ass GPU mind you). Again, it depends on what you need. If you don't need QWERTY, then you might want to look at the Evo as that is one of the best supported phones on the market (in terms of the dev community).

The carrier isn't important to me. It relies solely on the phone -- although, I think Sprint has one of the cheapest plans.

If trade my epic for a nexus s any day... The screen on both if my epics became loose after weeks and I harshly use the keyboard anyway

I guess it really depends on what you are coming from. I was a die hard blackberry user.... *throws up a bit* came directly to and specifically waited for the epic after seeing several inferior android phones but knew it was where I wanted to settle once I was able to dig deeper helping a few friends mod.
Point being if it will be the first phone of this caliber, I think you will love the epic and there is no reason not to in most cases as the phone is blazing, couple it with some of the mods from the devs here.... it will be sweet. That being said, the same would likely apply to most of the other phones in your list.

Only if you want a keyboard. I think that's all the Epic has over the Evo at this point. Yes it's faster, yes the screen is better, but.. Samsung support is terrible, while 2.1 runs fine and there are 2.2 leaks its still a sorry state to be in for a "flagship" phone.
IF you're interested in Roms.. go with an HTC. While the Evo is running a 98% functional CM7 and MIUI, and (Insert popular rom name here), the Epic's (while the developers are all awesome! This is NOT a knock) are more or less just customizations and ported applications with a breakthrough here and there such as EXT4.
Samsung is absolutely ridiculous "#neveragain". The keyboard skips letters, the GPS is moody and only works when it wants to, updates are pretty much MIA. Yes the epic is a little bit faster, with a more colorful screen, but at what cost.
Thanks to the Skippy keyboard I've become a professional on the onscreen keyboards and am highly considering a Evo off of Ebay while I can still sell the Epic for more. Maybe that gives you an idea of what it's like to own a Samsung.

The epic (galaxy s phone) has the best diplay and fastest GPU on the market as of posting this.

Loving my G2 thus far. Allready perm rooted and on CM6. Also dropped in my seidio 1750 from my Inc. I will enjoy this phone till I pick up a Nexus One.

Just saying that I wouldn't really strive to have a Nexus One if I already had a G2. The G2 hardware is pretty amazing and the Nexus One is sadly getting old at this point...

Nexus has great build quality, is a great weight, slim, has a coloured trackball and a really good screen. It's great if you don't like hardware keyboards, would love to own a monumental piece of Android/HTC history.

No no. I'm not trolling. I love this g2 thus far. Its a great device. But I do want to pick up a N1 for a trial or two. If anything ill make it a dedicated gps.

I don't think anyone hates the N1, it's just not "new" anymore and therefore not as cool as the "newer" G2... you know the drill with us techies.
I don't think you'd be unhappy going from the G2 to the N1. I personally can't understand how you'd be able to like the N1 and not like the NS though... they're basically the exact same device minus the manufacturer's name. (putting my flame retardant suit on)

No flame here. I completely agree. I love the N1 too, but it is a year old now, the specs just aren't good considering what you can get now.
I agree on the Nexus S point as well. NS is the next iteration past the N1, and it really is a solid device.

My issue with the NS is more of an anti samsung thing. With them dropping the ball on the galaxy froyo updates I just can't back em. Plus I the N1 was sexier. Imo.

I also think about picking up an N1 to fiddle with. Love my G2, but I'm afraid I've become addicted to seeing what our brilliant devs can cook up. So, the idea of having both a daily driver and a toy is attractive.
Regarding the NS: I'm wary of Samsung. I'm sure it's a solid device and, having been tapped my Google to be the next Nexus, will continue to reflect the bleeding edge of Android for at least another year. However, Samsung's record of slow updates and less than solid build quality puts me firmly in the HTC fanboy house.
Not going to lie. The new 10.1 tablet is tempting even with Samsung written on it.

g2 or g2x?

title says it all, but just to expand...
my contract just passed the 22 month mark, but im wondering if it would be a smarter idea to get the g2 and see what happens after the potential merger and what promotional deals i could get (if any). or i could be safe and get a g2x and be able to use both frequency bands of att and tmobile. I do realize that the g2x has a dual core, hdmi output, etc, but honestly specs dont matter that much to me; im perfectly content with the g2's good speed. theres also the fact that the g2 has a keyboard, while obviously the g2x does not. i currently have a g1, and i find it hard to switch to virtual keyboards. So guys, input?

well, i personally love hard keyboards but after getting use to swype, i can honestly say I can do without a hard keyboard. I'd prefer the g2x simply because it will set you up for the future. I'm waiting for my upgrade and switching to the g2x. I love the g2 and all but soon enough, apps and all will be updated to support multi cores. Plus i think the g2x's screen is better, looks better i mean. Up to you

At this point, the G2 shouldn't even be on your short list of phones to consider. It's old technology. Phones like the G2X and other upcoming dual core superphones like the Galaxy S II (or Galaxy S Pro if you want a keyboard) should be the ones you're looking at.
I see no value in buying a phone that came out in October last year at this point. Don't get me wrong the G2 is an awesome phone and I really like it, but there's no reason to buy this old of a phone with all these great ones coming out.
You just have to ask yourself, could you really see the G2 being relevant this time next year? I think a phone that comes out this month has a much better chance at that.

I have had mine for 5 months or so now but I honestly think If I was to upgrade from my old handset RIGHT NOW, I would either get the still G2 or wait for something else to drop from HTC with a hardware keyboard.
My last handset was a Hero and for the entire 8-10 months I had that I always regretted not getting a G1 ... (a) for the kb.... (b) for the dev support!!!!! There was always more going on with the G1 than the Hero.
I think I'll be content with my G2 for another 12months yet.

My wife just got a phone last week. We went into the tmobile store and personally i dont see anything better then a g2. g2x doesnt even count imo... it isnt in the G family on so many levels.
G2 is working great for me so she wanted a g2 also. Shes very happy with it, but then again she came from a motorola cliq lol.

I have a G2 since December and my girl just got a G2 now. The reason she wanted a G2 was because she was switching to t-mobile and wanted a phone with a keyboard. We decided that the G2 was good enough for her as it was quick for what she does and has swype as well.
She got the G2 for free with no dataplan required so it was a good deal.
Sure a dual core phone would have been nice, but it would be overkill for her. Front facing camera is a nice feature, but she won't be using it much, or even at all. She didn't want to drop $200 for the latest phone and pay $30 dataplan for the next 2 years.
She just love to text, email and go on facebook. She came from an iphone 3G so it was a big upgrade imo.

He using a G1 currently... do you honestly think the G2 is outdated compared to his current phone? It will a GIANT improvement over a G1 and you get to keep the qwerty kb. Trust me, I even fired it up the other day and it was unbearable.... The G2X has nice guts but looks like a plastic pos from LG (typical) and the extra frequency won't freaking matter for 3 years+ The stupid merger will be blocked for a year and a half (at least) and another year and a half before your 3G towers are gone (you still have 2G after that). By that time, 3D phones will be becoming mainstream (or at least more popular) and dual processors will be improved while quads are arriving on tables. The G2 is a good choice for a couple of years. Hell, you can overclock to almost 2GHz! That's plenty fast for now and the near future. The only issue I see is RAM is low compared to newer high end models but the cpu makes up for it with a little OCing...

Consider that this gentleman is still on a g1 which at this stage is genuinely outdated some two years after release. I think if he moved to the direct successor to this venerable handset he would be quite pleased. The brief overlay between release and the present day has merely allowed the dev community time to support the device. Instead, if he did what you suggest and get a g2x (which lacks a hard keyboard, something he seems fond of) he would have to wait some months for it to be cracked and the dev community to support it.
Not to mention that dual core phones are still relatively new tech. Even if the hardware is screaming fast, every dual core phone released so far has some sort of software issue and do you really genuinely believe that the carrier or vendor will be quick to patch these issues? Consider the Engadget review of the LG Optimus2x
Where we were left disappointed, however, was in the company's software execution. Neat little tweaks to Android's default interface failed to obscure the fact that the Optimus 2X is neither as responsive nor as stable as it should be. You might be able to rectify those flaws by installing one of the inevitable avalanche of custom ROMs that this device will benefit from, but we're here to review LG's own performance and we find the failure to deliver a reliable platform inexcusable.

Though speculating on the end product that HTC will produce is nothing more than conjecture at this stage, these types of commentary lead me to believe that despite the frankly staggeringly good physical hardware, albeit lacking the desired keyboard, the current iteration of dual core smartphones aren't really ready for the consumer market. Their battery life is acceptable, but that goes away when you really are trying to utilize the benefits of having a dual core setup in terms of snappy multitasking.
Get the G2 man. You'll be holding onto it for a while and whatever crop of phones ATT comes out with assuming this merger goes through will probably not live up to the high quality you'll find in the G2. Even now the Dev community is still supporting the G1 so as to if the G2 is going to be "relevant" in a year, that is a silly question. What about all those people who wish to stay off contract yet desire a decent handset at a cheaper price since it is a used model? Dismissing a handset offhand as being "old" and "outdated" despite obvious evidence against this assertion is both shortsighted and closed minded.

I hope no one here is paying 30 a month for unlimited. 20 dollars a month its called "android preferred" or something like that. 3 people included myself on our family plan have internet for 20 a month. Just ***** and moan and u can get it too.

camera pokes out so uneven backside
i think the review say it has no lens cover so prone to dust
Not a big modding community yet.

I love my G2 and will be happy with it for at least the next 2 years. But, if I were getting a phone now, I would probably get the G2x or more likely wait for the Pyramid.

the g2x hasnt even come out yet, that was the optimus 2x, which had its own lg skin over it.
this phone, with the g in the g2x, is mostly stock android with a bit of bloatware put in. you cant say it has a small mod community when it hasnt even come out yet.

Here's really what it boils down to: do you need a physical keyboard or not? A physical keyboard is an absolute must for me, and regardless of the hardware specs I need that keyboard. Right now there just aren't a ton of options on the market, for whatever reason, for a great phone with a physical keyboard, but the G2 is a fantastic one, and easily the best on the market next to the Sprint/HTC Evo Shift (since it's the same internals as the G2 anyway). Remember, even flagships like the Xperia Play have nearly the same exact hardware as the G2, so it's not like it's a crappy phone or something, just not cutting edge any more.

Hardware wise its the same phone and will be the same subforum .just like the g2 AND desire Z , HTC leo AND the HD2.

Sure the specs on the G2x is amazing, but i would perfer my G2 over the G2x anyday. What I love about my G2 is that it has a beautiful qwerty keyboard & personailly the g2x looks like plastic. The G2 looks like a ****ing Rock. So which one do you rather have a big peice of crappy Plastic or a nice tough looking Rock.

Like others have said here is my list of importance.
1. physical keyboard (i must have it, i cannot do without it)
2. android os (duh...)
3. spec (finally my 3rd i would finally have to start looking at speed and memory)
Maybe the keyboard isnt important to you, if that is so then you have a much larger selection.

Once you've gone hardware keyboard you cant go back. The keyboard is really a big draw the phone has. There aren't really any negative traits about the G2, besides that it's just slightly older. The 800 mhz processor isn't a negative trait about the phone. HTC makes much higher quality phones that LG (in my opinion). And there is not really anything that the G2x has that the G2 doesn't, aside from being game-focused (or at least the T-Mobile website makes it sound game-focused.
My vote is for the G2 for sure.

I came from the cliq... I feel her pain. Dont get me wrong, that phone was like a better iPhone sacrificing the High-End games. But man if its 1 thing I learned from that lesson. Its patients, timing and the right manufacture.
The G2 has a few things no other phone tmobile to date has to offer. Total Openess. Means long community support. G1 still fully supported cause its pure google. Only other phone is the Nexus S which lacks Keyboard, no SDCard, and is Samsung.
Not a single Dual-Core phone is pure Google yet or even a popular HTC for that matter (Like the EVO). Now the Evo 3D would be a good by because itll be way ahead of every1 else, be purchased by many, and its HTC. Most importantly translate to a large Community Base/Support.
