I'm currently using Google Maps Navigation (Beta) version and I really like how it works. However, the program doesn't seem to be as stable as it should be. At times it works and other it would just say "Searching for GPS". Has anyone encounter this issue before? What can i do to fix it? Since it's a Beta version, is there like an update for it? Or could you please recommend other GPS program that is as good as this one?
Please let me know. Thanks
I'm currently running HTC HD2 with;
Chucky ROM
Matt Leo Froyo Sense 1.8
Hastarin Kernel 7.1
2.12 radio
Search on how to edit your gps.conf and get gps status, it enables you to download satellite positions for a quicker fix like quick gps enables you to on windows, it's all here in this sub forum
After doing this myself I can get a fix in mere seconds, works really well!
gps.conf only sets timeservers. It can't alter the lock time. But there is a market app called Gps Status that will. It can download GPS assistance data, which locates your satellites. Lock is almost instant after you do that. There's a thread on it somewhere (search)
FYI if anyone updated Google Maps you're probably having issues with your Google Navigation where it hangs at some "Checking Navigation Availability" screen.
Solution: Market -> Apps -> Long press Google Maps -> Uninstall Updates

This would be a good solution except that the latest Market update is broken too, and any attempt to access my apps or clicking any app results in a FC.

this is not a specific problem to galaxy s. I am having it on my desire and I took these steps, but it didnt work.
I was having the same problem after flashing Perception 10. All I did was clear the data in Google Maps and then I went to the Places app and nav'ed a location from there and it was successful there. So then I went back to navigation and it worked fine. :\
Google Navigation and TTS Service
I didn't want to start a new thread, but I wanted to post something that I noticed today.
I was playing with my Samsung Fascinate and used Titanium to (safely) freeze as many of the unused applications and services.
TTS service is Text-To-Speach, and, since I didn't find any warnings about it, I froze it. Soon after, I realized that the Google Navigation wasn't responding.
Long story short, after I unfroze TTS service, it worked again.
This is just for your information, in case that somebody gets into a similar situation. If this is a well known fact (that the noobie that I am didn't know about), I apologize. I only wanted to help.
all the best and thank you all for all the work
I still have the 'Update Maps' on my Market, but I didn't do it..
When I had Froyo 2.2 standard through Kies, I had no issues with my navigation.
After flashing Darky's v8.0 I'm also getting the "Checking Navigation Availability" screen. So none of the solutions above worked for me..
Anyone got an idea?
Thx.

Thanks this worked for me
tried the above solutions, still not working on my Galaxy Tab, still stuck on "Checking navigation availability".
Can anyone in Hong Kong confirm if Google navigation is active or not?
With the previous (stock) maps 4.5 navigation is notavailable in HK, but rumour seems that it should work with the new 5.0 maps update... anyone?
I have had this happen twice on my Vibrant. The first time the above suggestion to clear the data worked, but the second time it did not. I was however able to get around it by doing the following:
Close navigation, then open maps. In maps, go to menu > directions and enter any address (I used one from a contact), hit go, and once the directions are up, hit the navigation button in the upper right corner. That should start the navigation program normally (no "checking navigation availability" BS). Once the navigation starts successfully, you can exit and from then on it should start normally from the dedicated Nav icon.
Hope this helps at least one person.

Worked for me!
There must be some incompatibility between versions of Maps in the data coding memory!
Galaxy S ; Darkyy's ROM 8.0;No lag fix yet.
Goto manage apps and clear cache and data. See post http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2444687 of yuzaman!
works on galaxy S
worked for me after darkeys extreme update cheers
You rock!

You rock man thanks for sharing. i thanked you for this 1. i was getting paranoid after i had the same issue. i even uninstalled google maps from the system(was a system app) XD but it was indeed the tts. annoying. thanks again!
Some GPS enabled apps on the Vega dont always work or even load.
This is because the device doesnt have a gps location to pass over to the App. One way around this is to install the following Application "My fake location" from the Market and set your GPS location manually.
Hope this helps.
Yes, "My fake location" works well, but you have to remember to fire it up before you run applications that use the GPS. Not a big issue, but something to remember.
Also my fake location force closes on certain roms. Just flashing a later version of pauls rom has fixed it for me.

Whenever I start Navigation, It Says 'Checking Navigation Availability' and it doesnt proceed. If the screen goes off and i unlock it again it is out of the navigation app.
It says Checking Navigation Availability because it searches your phone for a GPS App, like Navigon, iGO etc... Install a GPS Navigation Software and it will work.. I think it works like a "Car Home" software..
I read a couple of posts and cleared cache and restarted and it finally said navigation not available in my country. Use co- pilot now and its all good.

Where are you from?
Googles navigation dont work in many countries... checking for navination means that its waiting for gps lock. I suggest enabling gps xtra from settings to get a lot faster lock

I'm having the same problem. GPS Status & Toolbox, GPS Status Test & Fix and GPS Test all get a fix, accurate to 10 metres. When I open Google Maps, it just constantly says waiting for location. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Maps, and now the GPS icon doesn't even come up in the status bar (it did show up before the uninstall/reinstall but it still wouldn't get a fix). Does anyone have any ideas?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...+play&pcampaignid=APPU_RYS7U77vILKM7AbBjICACg
i've uninstalled the updates, now gps starts when i open google maps ...
but i only get the location given by the network or wifi.
the gps icon in the notification bar blinks ... finds the location fast enough (the location is accurate if checked in other applications) ... but this location is not shown in google maps:
if in location settings/mode i check 'gps only' ... the gps locks the correct position, but it is not shown on the map ...
if i chose 'high accuracy' .... maps will show the position of given by the network (which is not accurate)
any ideas? thank you!
btw google earth too fails to start the gps and to find an accurate position - it will get the position given by the network ... so it's a google thing - i guess!
another funny thing:
in maps i get the location using the network (which is not accurate), but if i switch to navigation - i get the location by gps (more accurate)!
so it uses the gps just for navigation .... what is this?
I figured out my problem: Google Play Services and Privacy Guard. Google Play Services needs location access as well as Maps.
Click thanks if I helped you
