Google Navigation - Checking navigation availability - Galaxy S I9000 General
FYI if anyone updated Google Maps you're probably having issues with your Google Navigation where it hangs at some "Checking Navigation Availability" screen.
Solution: Market -> Apps -> Long press Google Maps -> Uninstall Updates

This would be a good solution except that the latest Market update is broken too, and any attempt to access my apps or clicking any app results in a FC.

this is not a specific problem to galaxy s. I am having it on my desire and I took these steps, but it didnt work.
I was having the same problem after flashing Perception 10. All I did was clear the data in Google Maps and then I went to the Places app and nav'ed a location from there and it was successful there. So then I went back to navigation and it worked fine. :\
Google Navigation and TTS Service
I didn't want to start a new thread, but I wanted to post something that I noticed today.
I was playing with my Samsung Fascinate and used Titanium to (safely) freeze as many of the unused applications and services.
TTS service is Text-To-Speach, and, since I didn't find any warnings about it, I froze it. Soon after, I realized that the Google Navigation wasn't responding.
Long story short, after I unfroze TTS service, it worked again.
This is just for your information, in case that somebody gets into a similar situation. If this is a well known fact (that the noobie that I am didn't know about), I apologize. I only wanted to help.
all the best and thank you all for all the work
I still have the 'Update Maps' on my Market, but I didn't do it..
When I had Froyo 2.2 standard through Kies, I had no issues with my navigation.
After flashing Darky's v8.0 I'm also getting the "Checking Navigation Availability" screen. So none of the solutions above worked for me..
Anyone got an idea?
Thx.

Can anyone in Hong Kong confirm if Google navigation is active or not?
With the previous (stock) maps 4.5 navigation is notavailable in HK, but rumour seems that it should work with the new 5.0 maps update... anyone?
I have had this happen twice on my Vibrant. The first time the above suggestion to clear the data worked, but the second time it did not. I was however able to get around it by doing the following:
Close navigation, then open maps. In maps, go to menu > directions and enter any address (I used one from a contact), hit go, and once the directions are up, hit the navigation button in the upper right corner. That should start the navigation program normally (no "checking navigation availability" BS). Once the navigation starts successfully, you can exit and from then on it should start normally from the dedicated Nav icon.
Hope this helps at least one person.

Worked for me!
There must be some incompatibility between versions of Maps in the data coding memory!
Galaxy S ; Darkyy's ROM 8.0;No lag fix yet.
Goto manage apps and clear cache and data. See post http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2444687 of yuzaman!
works on galaxy S
worked for me after darkeys extreme update cheers
You rock!

Can't download anything in market - everything stuck at "Starting Download..."
Can't download anything in market - everything stuck at "Starting Download..." Okay so recently I have run into a problem where apps won't download from market -- they are just stuck at "Starting download...". I searched to see if this is a common problem (seems to happen to a good number of people) and I tried the solutions posted. I did factory reset, deleted cached, tried to login via different account, etc. etc. -- none of the solutions work. At best, after a factory reset for cache clear, an app or two will download before this problem occurs again. I have even tried upgrading to 2.2 market but it doesn't help. Anyone know of any good solutions for this? Thanks!
Rebooting the phone has always worked for me. It's happened to nearly all Android devices to someone at one point.
How good is your signal? I can't download anything with 2 bars on edge. Which is what I get at home. Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Rebooting doesnt help and it is not a signal issue. Altho i was having some connectivity issues last night but my net works just fine now.
you can try canceling, and restarting the download, always works for me also, downgrade back to 2.1, i heard 2.2 had problems
Clear the download manager and market app cache in settings/application manually. Reboot. Sent from planet rabbit using my intergalactic communicator
Thanks for all the help guys but nothing is working. I even tried reflashing JFD and upgrading to JI6 but still it doesn't work. It seems the first time I launch Market everything downloads fine but after that nothing works. Also, a weird thing happens: Market starts downloading all these apps automatically - apps I never told it to download - but all those apps come back as downloaded unsuccessfully.
Someone did this with success and it worked for me too I have managed to sort this now - here's what I did: Go into settings - applications - manage applications- scoll down to market & long touch to open. Clear cache AND Uninstall updated. It will ask for confirmation and then uninstall. I then went back to market and Bluetooth file transfer downloaded and installed with no probs. Hope this helps anyone else with same problem.
Have you tried going to Settings>Applications>Manage applications and locate Market then chose Clear Cache and Uninstall Updates.
There is a problem with doing that: I see no market under "Manage Applications"

I even tried clearing data of Market via Titanium Backup and still won't work. Oh well, my replacement phone is coming this week, so may as well wait it out. Thanks for all the help, everyone.
That sucks man... i have had the same problem as you and got it working with those steps . Hope you have no problems with the replacement.
Try to login to gtalk and it shall do the tricks Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

I've run into this with my phone (rooted stock), it's beyond frustrating and I have no idea what I do or might be running that might cause the issue. I was going to do yet another wipe when I found the below info on a google support forum. Nothing I had tried besides the reset would fix my market until I did the following: Under manage applications, filter show all, then: Checkin Service- clear data Download Manager- clear data Google Apps- clear data Google Talk Service- clear data Market- clear cache
I have the same issue. I have tried almost everything. I found a work around. I turn off WiFi and 3g on and it will start on 3g. If that doesn't work I keep 3g on WiFi off and restart fhe downloads, and it allways starts, even group downloads in 2.2. Not a solution but I can at least get the downloads started. I might try the post above me and give that a go. Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Menu Button > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Menu Button > Filter > (set this to All - it's more than likely set to Third Party right now). Then continue with the instructions given above.

this also happens to me sometimes. sometimes it will download but sometimes it won't, it's only saying "starting download" but it it's taking a long time in that status.

I stopped the Maps application, cleared the cache and deleted the data from the maps application via Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications; Tab "All"; Application "Maps"; Force stop; Clear cache; Clear data 2. I opened the Maps application (not Navigation) and accepted the change message 3. I went back to the home screen and started the Navigation application 4. Accepted the message 5. Navigation works like a charm (again)!
[Q] N7 Google Search problems / general wonkiness
Over the past week+, even before the latest update, Google Search has been acting wonky... Note: I am often in an environment that isn't ideal for voice searches, so all my searching is initiated by tapping the search bar. I don't know if the problems that I am reporting occur with voice initiated searches... Many times when I search no search results will come up... it will just sit there... Clicking on images at the bottom always brings up results and then clicking back on web sometimes 'wakes up' search and produces search results. Searching from within Chrome by typing a search on the URL bar always works and doesn't exhibit this problem... What I have done to try to remedy it: > Uninstalled Google Search updates and gone back to factory > Force stopped three apps/services and cleared data: search, voice search and google services framework > Removed and reinstalled my Google Account from the device None of those steps fixed the problem... Has anyone else experienced this? Note: I am totally stock with an unlocked bootloader... Thanks... Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

[Q] Can't re-enable disabled app
Ok so I was disabling a bunch of pre-installed apps from my S4 but mistakenly disabled 'Google Search'. Dumb move I know. The first image is my current phone's firmware. The problem I'm having is that when I go itno Settings>Application Manager>Disabled and click on Enable it asks me if I want to "Delete all Data and Disable App" Clicking on cancel just returns me to the App Info screen where the Enable button taunts me with it's uselesness. Clicking on OK asks me if I want to "Replace This App with the Factory Version" I've tried disabling and re-enabling other apps to see if it's a phone problem, but those other apps have re-enabled just fine. I'm stumped as to what to do. I don't want to delete all the data as I have 'Google Now' calibrated just perfectly to my current lifestyle, and I really don't want to do a 'Facotry Reset', setting everything back up again is a massive ball-ache I would certainly like to avoid. Any suggestions would be a great help :fingers-crossed: EDIT: Ok so afer getting impatient I just decided to go ahead and click on "Replace App with Factory Version" After deleting all the data the "Enable" button re-enabled the app as expected. When I opened the app I got a message saying that an 'Updated Version is Available on The Play Store' so I went ahead and updated it and then replaced the Google Now widget on on my phone. To my surprise, all of my 'Cards' and recent searches were still there, I guess as Google collects as much data on us as possible I should of expected they would of retained it, and on this case I'm glad they did. So in short - Problem Solved.
(Q) Location in google maps is greyed out
Hello. Well I noticed my location in google maps is greyed out but still is able to track where I am Whys is this happening since before it was working perfectly. My GPS works fine with all other apps but this has been a recent issue with google maps only. I wouldnt really care but every time I tried to set a route with the starting point as my location I get the unable to reach servers try again later and have to set the starting or end point manually for it to work. I have marshmallow 6.0,1 installed and the latest version of google maps dated for the time I am posting this
any help with this issue?
Mine works just as expected. Have you tried wiping data on the app, clear cache, force stop and then restart phone. Also check all location settings not just in settings menu but in Google settings as well. And make sure permissions for the app are granted for location.
I just updated to the latest android 6 version and the problem is solved
