Hello all, I have a question and i hope its easy to answer. Is the recovery.bin file, in the SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 file, the stock recovery console? If it is can i use heimdall to flash just the stock recovery over clockworkmod recovery?
Current phone info:
running Bonsai 1.1.3
clockworkmod recovery
dk28 build

Just use Odin. Super easy.
Actually there's an easier way. Over at sdx (the other developer forum), there is a sticky up top the epic forum. It has an all-in-one rooting tool that includes (among other things) a stock recovery install tool. I know its in this forum somewhere but for some reason it never got stickied, and I'm at a bar so I'm not bothering to look

Lol yea I looked all over. And I use heimdall because I have a linux machine. But that file I pointed out, is that the stock recovery?

Yes, recovery.bin from the stock tars is the stock Samsung recovery... flashable with Heimdall. The all in one root and recovery referenced earlier also has a menu option to restore the original Samsung recovery... it will also work with Linux.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I used heimdall last night and just flashed the entire phone to stock.

Let's say I were to flash Eugene's new 2.2 rom, how would I reflash the stock kernal in order to downgrade?

Your post confuses me. What are you downgrading/to? There are two ways (that I know of) to flash a kernel. One is to flash it through recovery. Two is the flash it through odin; which I am not familiar with and do not prefer.

Where exactly is this so called "list" you speak of?
Proudly pumped from my vibrating vibrant using the ubiquitous XDA App
Odin is one way (my preferred). Only have problems if I disconnect the phone (oops) or package something wrong.
Turn phone off.
Start Odin.
Load tarred zImage in a tar file (IMPORTANT: tarred with --format=ustar) into CSC section in Odin.
Plug in usb cable to computer and phone.
Get into download mode.
Wait for "COM" port to light up on Odin.
Click start.
CSC section? you sure?
What's a kernal?
KernEl, kernEl, kernEl!

i have a nandroid of ji6. do i just apply that and flash a ji6 kernal? can someone link me to one if so? if not, can someone explain how to do it? thanks.
I believe you have to ODIN the official JI6 release (you can find it in the dev forum). Then you have to root, install ROM Manager, and nandroid your way back to where you were.
The key is to Odin a Rom, any Rom, that has the JI6 kernel.
Odin JI6 and then nandroid.
Nandroid doesn't install the kernel, so you would end up with a "brick" if you tried to nandroid on a 2.2 rom.
thanks guys! loving obsidian so far, but i think i need the signal strength boost from ji6.
Nope, I was on Obsidian and just flashed straight back to Bionic Fusion through clockworkmod recovery (straight, not through ROM Manager), and then Core kernel on top of that. I'm running perfect apart from slow market downloads (mostly my fault I think--accidentally deleted some system apparently and then restored; downloads work, but fussy)

that's because bionix flashes the kernal along with the rom. nandroid doesn't. that is why i asked if i could just flash the ji6 kernel after restoring my nandroid.
ATTN: Don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about.
On to the post:
You can feel free to nandroid or flash to/from anything. However, if your Obsidian install is like many other peoples, you probably can't do crap in recovery. In that case, you need to Odin. However, if your recovery does work, just flash the rom and the kernel (or just the rom, if the kernel is included)
OK ill give it a shot if I decide I don't like obsidian. Thanks.

By can't do crap do you mean can't flash or can't access clockwork mod? (I can boot into clockworkmod just fine)

Ah, sorry. I thought the issue was whether you have to ODIN back to stock in order to roll back from Froyo.
For me the safest was to ODIN JFD, then flash JI6.
hello,i just got the samsung epic today .coming from an htc hero, its a big difference. i love the hero though. anyway, why is it such a hassle to flash a ROM with this rom? u gotta do the odin n all this stuff. with the hero u just wipe n flash.dont get me wrong,im not coming at you guys angry or anything lol.but just wondering why u gotta do this odin thing instead of just wiping n flashing
Just the new leaks because clockwork doesn't flash modems.
If you look you can find a post with a flashable modem upgrade to dk28 but it breaks gps.

you don't have to odin, you can use CWM Recovery to flash a .zip.

oh ok.yeah just downloaded the ACS modem zip thing. ..hopefully there'll be a better/easier way to do this..right?
I've searched all over the forums. I'm still looking how to install clockworkmod. I had it when I flashed to mammons rom, now its gone and one click won't work. when I use the one click root method it says failed at installing root and stops there. I'm assuming thats because mammons rom is pre rooted. I just need cwm and I only use and have access to a linux machine. any ideas?

Hey Guys What's Up !!!!!!!
I an new so try not to bash me to hard.
I am trying to flash a custom rom to my AT&T Galaxy S 4 (SGH-I337) running Android 4.3 Baseband Version MK2
without any success at all.
I have root, I used saferoot and rootchecker says I have root as well as other apps, I also have rom manager premium v5.5.3.7. And paid for the touch option And here is where everything goes south.
No matter what I do when the phone reboots into recovery mode it boots into the standard android system recovery mode.( Manual Mode)
I see no clockwork anything.
I am dead in the water. Please Help.
The only modification other than root that I have done to the phone is change the tetherprovision.apk files with one I found out here
to reenable tethering. It worked like a champ (Sweet Thanks For That).

Your gonna have to read up on Safestrap for MK2. It is the ONLY recovery you can use. You CANNOT INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY OR TWRP RECOVERY. doing so may brick your device or make it so you lose even stock recovery.
With Safestrap for Mk2 you can install SOME Roms. So look it up.

Most developers will note if it can be or if someone has had any luck in doing so. I believe SHOstock and goldeneye are able to be flashed with safe strap now but I would check into it first.
