BATTERY EMITTING "SMOKE" (Trickle-Charge Kernel most likely responsible?!) **PICTURE*
I have been using the Savage kernal with Trickle-Charge since basically the first day it came out. I have been sick all day and have kept my phone on the charger (because I was sleeping and not leaving the house). I was working (I do alot of work from home) and suddenly I thought I saw a small amount of smoke above my desk. About a minute later a thin veil of very light smoke was comming out of my Evo. I really FREAKED OUT and without thinking picked it up as fast as I could and put it in my bathroom and closed the door (i've heard about exploding batteries and I wasnt going to take a chance). It was VERY hot to the touch and I had to hold it by it's sides. About two hours later I went into the bathroom and the phone was off, and I try to turn it on nothing happens. However, I think the phone is fine, the battery is probably just ruined. Could it have been because of my trickle-charge kernel? It was a stock OEM battery.....
also, I WAS NOT OVERCLOCKING
I have read the thread Trickle-Charge thread in the Q&A section and it seems like it all may be tied together
EDIT: I threw the battery out in the snow a few hours later, popped in another stock one and the evo works! HOWEVER there are weird stains/marks on the inside of the battery cover (maybe from heat or something?). I quickly ran a NAND of some other non-sbc kernel rom and so far so good
PICTURES COMMING TOMORROW (when I am more awake lol)
Also check out this thread, it's kind of the hub to all trickle-charge damage LOL:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890448

Notice the weird dark stain around the middle of the battery cover. The battery is in my garage and I will take pictures of it later, but it looks normal (as far as I can tell).

You aren't the only one.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/51972-sbc-killed-my-battery-2.html

Yup, it was bound to happen. There is a reason why these phones are designed to charge the way they do.

o ****!
to say the least

You mean HTC had a reason for the way the EVO battery charged stock. Funny how that works. Never liked the idea of the trickle charge kernel's.

Lucky it did not burn your house down or explode as you were taking it into the bathroom.
Then again I guess a loss like that is worth a 10% increase in battery.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

You may have done this already, but make sure you remove the battery and properly dispose of it. You don't want it leaking caustic chemicals into your phone.

I think SBC (Savage + MIUI) killed my battery too. Left it charging after work and it wont turn on with that battery. Swap it with a cheapo one and it turns on.

Wow I just got my 3500mAh and flashed a sbc kernel...After hearing this I'm about to find a non sbc kernel that my phone likes...smh

Take it outside, it can still catch on fire. Look up a youtube video of one burning and you will see why you don't want it in your house

What sucks about not using a sbc kernel is that your phone will never fully charge the 3500mAh. You will have to buy an external charger. You may see a little improvement over the stock battery when charging it in your phone.

+1 on that -- www.ziggy471.com and check out his January 2 betas. I'm flashing the CFS version with a -150 undervolt on Calkulin's EViO 2 and my phone is silky smooth with great battery life. I get the initial drop from 100% but then it all settles down. For me anyways. Ymmv.

Same here, wouldn't htcs method of topping the battery work? Granted you have to plug/unplug a lot.

Did you cry while running to the bathroom and then use the other bathroom to change your tampon too? ****in' pull the battery out of it, man up and save your phone.

Why would you pull a battery that is releasing oxygen/on fire? I would have thrown the phone outside or in the toilet. 500$ is not worth your life or a body part. Youtube li-on explosions.

Because the faster you take away the charge and less time you leave it collect heat in a closed phone the faster it will NOT explode. It's alright, i forgot that this place was full of neckbeards who probably call 911 for stubbed toes and when they see steam coming out of a neighbor's dryer vent

Is this good battery life?

~15hrs life with display on 3 hours. Lots of text. Mostly using wifi ..3g for 2 hours. Lots of texts and ebuddy and some facebooking
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
Depending on the battery size assuming you have the standard: Yes, mostly due to the WiFi.
I don't know why the CDMA cell radio eats soo much of it up.
I'm currently at 62 hours of up time (came off the charger at the same time) with about 3.25 hours of actual screen on time. Mostly on wifi just as you. Ive had 6 phone calls, many text messages, and some basic screwing around on the phone and I'm only down to 36% battery so far. Stock red battery (1500 or 1600mah, whichever it is)

Yup. I kind of want to plug back in so I can transfer some stuff on and off the sd card, but I'm holding off because I want to see how far I can drag this out. Midnight tonight will be the 3 day mark.

my own, Jiminy V, but you probably won't be really interested in it unless you're on Cricket as it has all Sprint stuff yanked out. However, the Reengineered 3.70 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878670) I would imagine would give you the same results as it was I used as my base rom.
I should try that out.. I always use cm6 and Zendroid bfs avs 844 245 smartass

I unplugged Sunday morning at 4:30 am. Monday at noon I was at 50%.
Now I really only used the phone to check facebook a few times, some emails, and what time the game started. Light texting and a few short calls.
The battery maintains very very well when you don't use it.
I am on latest fresh.

about 4 hours. a little over an hour a day. I'm not glued to my phone like some of you guys are. It stays in my pocket and I pull it out to check the time or send a text message. It gets hundreds of 10-15 second bursts each day.
I'll admit that for the sake of seeing how far I could get the battery to stretch I haven't been sitting around watching youtube and playing angry birds all day....

Hah indeed, I lasted through a 3 day weekend drinking binge on one charge and it was amazing. Probably not half of that for screen on time. Its been said and I find it to be true, when not in use it does hold its own in terms of a charge.
I can't even imagine what my battery stats would be if I played games or watched videos, tbh. 24 hours with 3 or more hours of screen on time is good enough for me.
Had to ask, was only curious

Its all based on usage. I tend to get 5-10 hours of usage (depending on what I am doing) That can be over a 12, 24, 48 hour period.
From what I see, its really based on how much you use it, and what you are doing.
On a full charge of the 1500 stock battery, I get 5.25 hours of video playback watching movies on a plane.

Amazing battery life on epic

I thought i would share this information because I've wasted so much time and effort trying to find the best bettery/performance combination. What I have finally conceded to was the fact that i needed an extra battery. I've read opinions that charging externally will give extra battery life, and let me tell you, they are all true.
So as of right now, under normal use and conditions, my battery is sitting at 89% charge with 7h 39m of on/standby time.
Here's the formula that works best for my epic:
Rom-baked snack
Kernel- bakedsnack step 2
Charge battery on external charger
Use ultimate juice defender to cycle data on every 15 min when screen is off and cconnect when on.
Thats it in a nutshell. The extra OEM battery and charger cost me like 30 bucks on amazon. Make sure its OEM battery because most after market batteries wont charge unless you throw it on the external charger only, which could leave you in a jam if you only have power cord.

I've been debating about doing somthing this, but with my work, I need the "instant" email. I was in Staples, and they had a 2000mah external USB battery for $18 clearance. It comes with a cable and many tips for it and a little pouch to put them all in. I bought 2. I'm usually in range of a power supply, but then I've got 2x2000 mah extras just in case. I know I lose some because of the way charging works, but it's keeps me going for a very long time.
I'm running Baked Snack with Extreme kernel overclocked and I get excellent battery life, would be even better if I could just kick my internet addiction.

There's really no such thing as "not using" these phones. He's either lying/exaggerating or he's disabled everything that makes this not just a flip phone, and never uses it even for that.

i assure you my screen on time was longer than your entire battery life. 2.1 kernels were amazing. either you have not owned your phone long enough or just dont know how to use it.

A different kind of SBC kernel thread

I've seen lots of threads about what SBC does, why it's bad, yadda yadda... but the point of this one isn't about that. I understand what it is and I understand the risks, and I'd like some input from people that have still been using them.
The first time I used a nightly of CM7 I flashed a SZ kernel not knowing it was SBC. I was blown away at the battery life I was getting. Some fellow Android enthusiast coworkers were convinced that something was 'wrong' with my phone when it took about an hour to drop from 100% to 99% -- and after about 16 hours I was over 60% still. It wasn't until later on that I stumbled upon some "SBC is bad, mmkay" posts/threads and horror stories of melting batteries and ruined phones. I immediately stopped using the SBC kernel.
The only issue that I ran into was that apps would occasionally seem to "time out" -- including system stuff. For example I'd try going to "Settings" and the screen would just dim like it was about to load or change over, and nothing would happen. Or I'd open Wordfeud and it would just be a black screen, like it didn't want to load. Typically I had to force stop it and reload it, then it'd work. That drove me insane. I don't know if it was related to the SBC, might have just been the kernel vs the ROM. Any input about that is appreciated.
Anyway... who has been using SBC kernels without any issues? It seems to me like if you're just smart about it (i.e. not leaving the phone charging all day long) then you shouldn't have issues (even though of course the risk is still there). I'd imagine there's quite a few XDA'ers that use SBC kernels because of the incredible battery life. You're the ones that I want to hear from.
Ill throw my opinion on this one...
Ive been using them since day one...never once had an issue. I beat the hell out of my phone and get great battery life with the stock battery. Ive tested different setups & combos of background data syncing...to this day I have not found any negative effects on my phone/battery. I leave it on the charger for about 8 hours per night when I sleep...if I dont stream music for 8 hours straight, I get about 8-11 hours of life out of my phone before needing to charge.
Here is my current battery usage on a SBC kernel. Currently at 82%

I'm using savaged Zen on CM7 SBC and charge for 8 or so hours while I sleep. It reaches a full charge after 2 of those hours so the rest of the time it is just trickling. That is the only time I charge it and have never had an issue with SBC.
I've been using sbc kernels since the beginning. Never had an issue. I have the Sprint extended battery and get 2 days battery life with moderate usage. I play games, text, phone, internet and surf the market quite a bit. Right now my phone has been off the charger for 16 hours and I still have 60% battery left. It was sitting idle in my locker at work for 8 hours but other than that it has been pretty steady usage.

First of all I'll say that I was a part of the people that believed that the SBC kernels should have a warning disclaimer back when that was going on.
Now that is out of the way...
I had received an extra brand new battery with my replaced Evo.
So I decided to start using the SBC kernel's because I figured that if the battery went...who cares... I have a brand new replacement.
I will stop now and say that I've done the HTC calibration talked about here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712990
I was using the SBC kernel for a good few months and although the battery life was better it started declining.
I, of course, re-calibrated the battery but that seems to not help either.
So, did the battery's life fail due to the SBC kernel?
Don't know.
Not going to make that claim.
Just chiming in.
Using a 3000 mAh I get a good 16 Hrs using the SBC more aggressive blah blah blah, and I am always on my phone streaming radio, web and texting.

So, did the battery's life fail due to the SBC kernel?
Don't know.
Not going to make that claim.
Just chiming in.

Lol... another one of these?! I get a bazillion hours of battery life when my phone just stands there and does basically nothing too. Who doesn't? Get out of your caves people and call someone. I want to see those batteries then.

hes saying anyones phone can last a long time while not being used, this thread needs to go away
I think what he means is, what kind of battery life do you get when using your phone hard? I have tried SBC and Non-sbc, but have not really noticed any difference. I am either surfing the web or playing games CONSTANTLY on my phone during the day, due to the nature of my job. I literally log 6+ continuous hours of surfing per day and, for me, the sbc kernels do not make an appreciable difference. This is not meant as a criticism, it is simply an observation of real-world results on my phone. I get up at 4:30 every morning. Phone comes off charger at 4:50 every morning. By 10am, I am plugging my phone in, cause I am down to 15%...maybe 15 minutes earlier, maybe 15 minutes later, but right around 10am. The kernel I use makes no difference with this. With that said, the kernel I use makes a BIG difference in my ENJOYMENT of that time. My phone has been really happy with anything other than stock. SZ is a close second, but none are as good as htc 15 for me (specifically at issue are screen-tearing in webpages, and smoothness of scrolling. When I was trying out netarchy, I had constant fc's of the browser and had to stop. I am sure the problem is in my phone, but that doesn't make it any more usable. None of the king kernels work well for me, causing tones of fc's and random reboots). I am currently living with stock cm cause it is stable, and I am feeling too lazy to flash a kernel just for some screen-tearing. I know. Pathetically lazy.

At any rate, a comment like "this thread needs to go away" is EXACTLY why threads about this subject usually explode.
No one here has said anything ridiculous, just trying to discuss.

All I'm saying is the overall capacity of the battery declined, and quicker than it should, after using the kernel.
I'm not saying that the kernel caused it.

Or just you.
The purpose of this thread was to talk to people that have been using SBC kernals and haven't had issues.
I guess I'm not surprised at some of the dumbass comments that have been made. I don't even know why I wasted my time trying to start a discussion.
ive been using sbc kernels since the beginning too, other than the major glitch with them (fix is to not have plugged in while rebooting, or unplug then replug to reset charging) I am very satisfied and thank FSM that ms79723 made sbc for us
my stock battery still feels like its new, I don't notice any inconsistant drain patterns
I use my phone heavy, i can drain my stock battery in 4hrs and my chinese fake 3500 in 7hrs. constant surfing, downloading, texting, talking and tethering. I do it daily not rarely, my nand memory should be failing by now and I'm surprised my batteries have survived this long due to abuse nonsbc related.
the longest my phone went without a sbc kernel was an hour while testing cm stock kernel and I refuse to flash a non sbc kernel.
I will make it known when my battery dies from sbc, so far so good, knocks on wood

Well thank you Steve Jobs for telling us what we need.
I've been using them for a few months and didn't realize I used them incorrectly until a week ago. I normally got great battery life but I found out that I had to let it charge overnight. I never left my phone overnight while charging so I guess I didn't push the kernels to the max. What I would do is just let it charge past 100% for like an hour and then take it off. I only thought people with 3500 batteries should leave it overnight and boy was I wrong. Other day I left my phone overnight for the FIRST time and I really saw the difference; it's funny because the way I know it was working is the battery monitor widget was showing 12-14mA's all night(finally witnessed trickle charging). Man was I amazed lol. Sorry for the long cluttered rant I'm on my phone so I'm trying to keep this short.

Is anybody else using the LEAKED GINGERBREAD ROM on their EVO? Thoughts? Opinions???

I've been using it for 2 days and so far I have nothing but good things to say about it. The battery life so far has been top notch. My phone has currently been off the charger for 15 hours and 2 minutes, and I still have 41% battery left. It's very responsive. Everything works on my HW003 Evo. The one problem I have discovered so far is that when I record a video, once I'm done it force closes the video app. But the good thing is that the recorded video is saved intact and I can re-open my camcorder app immediately if I want to record another video. So it's really not a big issue. Other than that everything else sems to be working very smoothly. I have Go Launcher EX running on top of it and everything is super-fast. So far I'm really loving this leaked ROM. What about you guys(and girls)???

Well, I took it off the charger just after midnight last night, and I woke up at 7am. So 7 of those hours it was resting. But since then I've been to the gym and listened to music the whole time, sent a few texts, received about 30-40 texts from twitter, browsed the web for some of the links, viewed some android central youtube videos, updated some apps in the Market, made 2 phone calls, etc.. The point is with my last ROM and kernel, normally I'd be at about 15% battery by now.. There seems to be a noticeable improvement. But I posted this thread because I'm wondering if it's my imagination or if anyone else is having similar experiences.

A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Where's a link for it? I wanna try this out and put in my .02!
Fyi my g1 only lasted 4-6 hours on a charge using stock battery, I turned off the radio and let it sit in my sock drawer it stayed on in stand by for nearly a week on that same battery.
These threads bragging about battery life are just BS, im sure if I want all day not using my evo I'd also get 16+ hours on a stock. I typically get a good 14-16 hours using my 3000 mAh battery and being constantly on my phone.
I noticed a lump in my battery last night (SBC maybe?) And now im back on the stock battery, this is my 3rd time today its back on the charger, my point? None but these threads don't mean a thing unless there's any really useful information to significantly extend the battery, especially to us users who do use our phones and not just let them sit idol all day.

If anyone says a phone can last more than 4-5 hours, then using a phone to them is turning the screen on to check the time, then quickly turning it off.
Anyways link? I wanna use Sense with Gingerbread.

Last I checked there's a few in the development forum, but they are ports and a work in progress and have a lot of things broken. As son as there is a stable gingersense im all over that.
I loaded the leaked 2.3.3/sense 1.0 that tmartin put together. It is 100% functional for me. Some people were having issues with the screen staying at 100% brightness, and the camera acting strange. I think that may have been a variety of factors, wipe quality, hardware number, and screen type.
The rom was flawless for me. I have a 3500 battery and used my phone like a crackhead for 15.5 hours before the battery died. I was web surfing most of the time, and reading the leak thread that hit over a 1000 posts in a day before the op locked it up.
I am now using the misfit gingersense rom, and it is working 100% for me, apart from some very minor black on black text when word suggestions pop up using swype.

I flashed the tmartin 2.3.3 sense leak as well. I liked it for the most part...but it wasn't anything really special...some menu changes and it did have the nice fast boot feature. Sense was still a little sluggish when scrolling through home screens. I flashed back to cm7....what I do miss is the stable 4g that I do not get with cm7 final.

Wtf are you talking about!?
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
This post was not just about battery life. That was just one aspect of it. I posted it to get feedback from others who are also running the ROM put together by TMartin from the leak. I still don't get why people get so funny acting when it comes to others talking about how long their battery lasts. If you don't like it or don't care to hear about it then move on, as it may not be for you. But others may be interested to see if it improves their battery life. Remember, every post here isn't catered just for you. The world is bigger than just you. Anyway, I use my phone quite regularly, whether it be browsing the web, viewing video, texting, listening to music, etc.
I also forgot to mention that I'm using the stock battery.
For those who asked where they can find the download, here ya go. It's linked in the first post:

Dude, your battery might have cancer. You should do a battery self-exam at least once every month. It's best that you do it in the shower so that the battery can hang low. Make sure you roll your battery through your fingers to check for any abnormal growth or lump.
If you feel a lump or that the shape of your battery has changed at all, don't hesitate to see your doctor. Remember, catching battery cancer in the earliest stages gives you a much better chance at survival!

I layed on a flat surface and noticed it rocked a little bit, so yea it has a slight deformity. Dr. Abu ghraib can have a look at it tomorrow.
I flashed it and been running it for a few hours now. Its alright, nothing ground breaking or impressive. Im kinda disappointed about no vertical battery or the on/tv off effect like the asop roms have. I thought I was gonna see that in gingersense. No big deal though, its same ol sense on gingerbread. I did notice some improvements in the browser. Fair enough, its cool, but still a little buggy.
Screen dimming works for me BTW, on my 0003.
Tomorrow will be the real test as far as the battery goes.
What bugs have you noticed?

[Info] Used LED as flashlight for 3.5 Hours in a row

Hi peeps,
I wanted to share an experience to those wondering.
Iv'e been to the beach with Girlfriend + 2 friends for an overnight in the weekend with tents and all.
When we got to the beach it became dark and we had no light.
I decided to put the SGS2 Led to the test and use it for as long as battery would permit.
I used it for about 3.5~ Hours till phone went dead.
I am happy to say, it wasn't even hot, and when i recharged the phone the led was perfectly fine. Gave me a little scare when it just went off.
I strapped the phone to a high pole with some rope and it provided lots of light for comfortable feasting! (Food!!!).
I don't know if all leds will tolerate such abuse
But mine did.
Cheers,
Eitam.
I'm pretty sure it will reduce the life expectancy of led flashlight though.

Cheers for this! I seriously fear when I leave mine on for more than like 10 seconds... NOT anymore
You will be the first one who would need an extra LED for replacement, lol. Thanks for sharing the info anyway.
Test the camera if its glass is not deformed. Just to be sure. Interesting though ..
Wow, thats definitely good to know. I plan to use the flash as a flash light from time to time but not as much as 3.5 hours lol

Typical life of a led is 50 000 hours, roughly 5 years as stated above. Much longer then you will ever need on a phone
German Wikipedia says that modern Hi-Power LEDs (I guess one of those is used for the flash) will have all of their brightness for 15000 to 30000 hours. That'd be ~2 to ~3.5 years of continuous use.
After that time they will still work but won't be as bright.
So: Unless for heat reasons, which can be easily checked, go ahead and use the LED-flash as a flashlight!

As long as it would last the 1.5 Years I'm planning on keeping the SGS2, i'm fine with it.
Whoever's buying the phone from me 2nd hand will have to deal with the led when/if it fails. Not MY problem, and he will be paying cheap for the phone anyway.
I seriously think they should make the LED an easy replaceable module (if it's not) so we could use it freely and replace it when it dies. I'd pay 50$ to get it replaced even if I had to do it every 5 months...

Does this look deformed to you?
Assumed the LED on your phone is no where remotely defective then your LED would probably outlast all other parts of your phone, Im more worried about the screen on time. What app did you use 3.5hrs seems a little to low.. maybe the screen was also on during that time ?
intresting.. but i wud never do that..cheaper to get/buy a flash light.. using the sgs2 as one ..dats quite an expensive risk (~$800) ..
plus leds also lose their life expectancy ..the same way as any other bulbs/light does.. the more u use the more its lifes gets short
anyway well done.. i would be scared to do it and thanks as it gives us some infor that sgs2 is built pretty well

I used a widget called "Flashlight" hehe.
And the screen was OFF the whole time, But I had everything else on, 3g/sync/bt/gmail/whatsapp/lookout
I think I haven't started using it from 100% maybe it was around 70% or so.
I was playing a gig the other week and something didn't seem right. I had actually just installed the flashlight app that day and it came in handy. Shining really bright down below it showed me where a drum skin had broken on the bass drum. Only needed to keep the light on for a minute or two here and there. Didn't sap the battery too much. Everything is ok in moderation. Not sure I'd want my phone anywhere near sand on a beach though.

Well, I understand you.
But my phone has SGP Black Soul Case and Screen Protector so, the chances of scratch are very little.
About the light, I have always used the light for like 10-15 minutes at night to do all sort of stuff without turning on the light and waking girlfriend up, never had any problems.
The 3.5 Hours was a one timer, and I am happy to still have a working led.
I was taking a chance and I know it
If i'd had a headlamp or so I wouldn't have needed it.
Thanks for tip! I actually forgot you could even use that as a flashlight
I do agree that in small drips and drabs, it would be fine. Anything too lengthy and repeated would wear down the LED.
To use the LED as a flashlight is okay, because in the "normal" mode, it is not used with 100% of the power it can provide.
When you capture a picture with flash enabled, you can see, that the actual flash is much brighter. This is 100% power. And if you use the led with 100% you need a heatsink, or it will reduce the lifetime of the led extremly, up to damageing it.
As long as it is used i normal mode, it is not overheating or anything else. The short 100% power usage with the camera is okay too, because it does not heat up that much in that short moment.
Sorry for my bad english, but I think you get the idea
How do I make sure its in normal mode?
