Amazing battery life on epic - Epic 4G General

I thought i would share this information because I've wasted so much time and effort trying to find the best bettery/performance combination. What I have finally conceded to was the fact that i needed an extra battery. I've read opinions that charging externally will give extra battery life, and let me tell you, they are all true.
So as of right now, under normal use and conditions, my battery is sitting at 89% charge with 7h 39m of on/standby time.
Here's the formula that works best for my epic:
Rom-baked snack
Kernel- bakedsnack step 2
Charge battery on external charger
Use ultimate juice defender to cycle data on every 15 min when screen is off and cconnect when on.
Thats it in a nutshell. The extra OEM battery and charger cost me like 30 bucks on amazon. Make sure its OEM battery because most after market batteries wont charge unless you throw it on the external charger only, which could leave you in a jam if you only have power cord.

I've been debating about doing somthing this, but with my work, I need the "instant" email. I was in Staples, and they had a 2000mah external USB battery for $18 clearance. It comes with a cable and many tips for it and a little pouch to put them all in. I bought 2. I'm usually in range of a power supply, but then I've got 2x2000 mah extras just in case. I know I lose some because of the way charging works, but it's keeps me going for a very long time.

I'm running Baked Snack with Extreme kernel overclocked and I get excellent battery life, would be even better if I could just kick my internet addiction.

I get 30 hours on my G2 running cyanogenmod clocked at 1.3ghz. muahhaha

30 hours is crap that's what I get on leaked froyo which is terrible I was getting 60+ hours on 2.1

60??? Holy heck, I thought 15 hours with my Epic 4g running on my Yoobao 2800mAh battery was impressive... This is with no battery tweaks, no performance tweaks, just plain old stock rom. I usually leave wifi/4g/gps on all the time and get about 10 hours on my extended battery.

I have several extended batteries n get 15 to 30hrs
Plain stock 2.1

Sigh! wow, i gotta do this.

For ppl that get 60 hours and such, thats because ur barely using the phone! I get like 8 to 15 hours depending on how much i use it. I used to use juice defender but i get similar battery life with and without it so i dont think it does that much saving.

Not talking about having the phone sit next to your bed all day unused. I get 30 hours with moderate usage consistently, and on the Epic running the battery saving kernels/ROMs can't do that.
You sir, are the crap that you speak of.

He didn't say 30 hours like you said. He said 60. And if you to get 60 its cause you don't ever use your phone. I don't care what setup you have if you use your phone you will not get 60 hours on stock battery.

I bought two of the 1500's with the external charger on ebay for $9 back in September. They have been great. I only use my stock battery a couple of times a month to keep it going.

There's really no such thing as "not using" these phones. He's either lying/exaggerating or he's disabled everything that makes this not just a flip phone, and never uses it even for that.

what i have observed is... sitting idle....without any activity nt even screen on.. after unplugging from a 100% charged state.. reduces to 80% in a cpl of hrs.. i m on viperrom frozen and havent used any battery calibrating apps yet.

When is Sprint changing terms again? Have they recently?

Because...
I want to drop them and sell my Evo.
I can't deal with the battery life on this phone anymore, no matter which ROM I use, and how much I tweak SetCPU and/or JuiceDefender...
It's a great phone, but I am going to settle for a little less but allow my phone to last more than 1.5 days (at best, with minimal usage)
If somebody could let me know I would appreciate it dearly..thank you
Mike
I have no idea when they will change their TOS again but I'll gladly give you $100 for your evo..
Who could possibly know if/when Sprint would change their TOS?
Battery life is great on the Evo. I charge my phone every 35 hours or so.
Battery life isn't great on the Evo, don't be that guy.
But, any modern smartphone isn't going to last 1.5 days with heavy usage, except maybe a blackberry.
If your only complaint is battery life, sell your evo and buy a bold or something.
Battery life is the same across all smart phones, not sprint and their last change was earlier this year, you won't c one anytime soon. Get a bb

35 hours??
You do know your EVO has internet capabilities.. right? (you must not be using them if you're getting 35 hours! )
But yeah, I use the crap out of my phone and I average 20 - 24 hours..
I have never heard someone complain about a smart phone only lasting a day and a half. You seriously can't charge while you sleep?
I mean get any phone you want, I could care less, but man, you are strange.

It's not final, it's 'stable'
There would be a very disappointed community if CM became 'final'
Fresh 3.2.0 with the standard kernel.
This was with some general facebook, browsing, texting, talking etc. I would say moderate to heavy use. 7 hours of use out of a single charge is pretty damn stellar I would say.

I'm still curious if you realize your phone connects to the internet though.. (and I hope you have a sense of humor)
I'm not aware of any modern smart phone with a fast processor, touch screen, multiple wireless radios, etc. that can last through a day of heavy use. Not iPhone, Evo, Galaxy, etc. Like any mobile device, you learn to manage power. When I am out and about on my laptop and not using wifi, I turn it off. I lower the screen brightness, etc. When I need to use it, I turn it on. Leaving everything and anything turned on is like leaving all the lights on in your house while staying in a single room at a time--wasteful of power.
I keep a charger by my bedside and one at my desk. I charge my phone overnight and with regular use (checking emails and texts as they come in, maybe some light web browsing on the can, etc) I am usually around 40-50% when I get home after work. If I am using it a lot or end up someplace with poor reception like a basement or a control room that is surrounded by ducts and wiring, I will either turn off data or use the charger at my desk to top off at some point during the day.
I have yet to have any problems with this since it's a workflow that evolved from my personal uses and needs. Yours may be different. Maybe you drive a lot and use GPS or music streaming. If so, get a car charger. If you are away from all outlets and not in a car for large parts of the day, maybe grab a spare battery off ebay. At least you have the option. Some smart phones don't even let you swap the battery in emergencies if you want to. I've found Evo pretty much on par with other phones with similar hardware. Just turn off radios not in use and keep chargers or MicroUSB cables in convenient places like nightstand, desk, car.
7 hours out of a single charge sucks, my iphone 3G got 1-2 days on average with heavy usage, but I didn't want to be an Apple fanboy anymore, so I went HTC, and HTC batteries SUCKKKKKK
Anyways, I hope Sprint changes terms soon so I can PEACE OUT

BATTERY EMITTING "SMOKE" (Trickle-Charge Kernel most likely responsible?!) **PICTURE*
I have been using the Savage kernal with Trickle-Charge since basically the first day it came out. I have been sick all day and have kept my phone on the charger (because I was sleeping and not leaving the house). I was working (I do alot of work from home) and suddenly I thought I saw a small amount of smoke above my desk. About a minute later a thin veil of very light smoke was comming out of my Evo. I really FREAKED OUT and without thinking picked it up as fast as I could and put it in my bathroom and closed the door (i've heard about exploding batteries and I wasnt going to take a chance). It was VERY hot to the touch and I had to hold it by it's sides. About two hours later I went into the bathroom and the phone was off, and I try to turn it on nothing happens. However, I think the phone is fine, the battery is probably just ruined. Could it have been because of my trickle-charge kernel? It was a stock OEM battery.....
also, I WAS NOT OVERCLOCKING
I have read the thread Trickle-Charge thread in the Q&A section and it seems like it all may be tied together
EDIT: I threw the battery out in the snow a few hours later, popped in another stock one and the evo works! HOWEVER there are weird stains/marks on the inside of the battery cover (maybe from heat or something?). I quickly ran a NAND of some other non-sbc kernel rom and so far so good
PICTURES COMMING TOMORROW (when I am more awake lol)
Also check out this thread, it's kind of the hub to all trickle-charge damage LOL:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890448

Yup, it was bound to happen. There is a reason why these phones are designed to charge the way they do.
o ****!
to say the least
You mean HTC had a reason for the way the EVO battery charged stock. Funny how that works. Never liked the idea of the trickle charge kernel's.

Lucky it did not burn your house down or explode as you were taking it into the bathroom.
Then again I guess a loss like that is worth a 10% increase in battery.

You may have done this already, but make sure you remove the battery and properly dispose of it. You don't want it leaking caustic chemicals into your phone.
I think SBC (Savage + MIUI) killed my battery too. Left it charging after work and it wont turn on with that battery. Swap it with a cheapo one and it turns on.
Wow I just got my 3500mAh and flashed a sbc kernel...After hearing this I'm about to find a non sbc kernel that my phone likes...smh
Take it outside, it can still catch on fire. Look up a youtube video of one burning and you will see why you don't want it in your house

What sucks about not using a sbc kernel is that your phone will never fully charge the 3500mAh. You will have to buy an external charger. You may see a little improvement over the stock battery when charging it in your phone.

Because the faster you take away the charge and less time you leave it collect heat in a closed phone the faster it will NOT explode. It's alright, i forgot that this place was full of neckbeards who probably call 911 for stubbed toes and when they see steam coming out of a neighbor's dryer vent

~15hrs life with display on 3 hours. Lots of text. Mostly using wifi ..3g for 2 hours. Lots of texts and ebuddy and some facebooking

Depending on the battery size assuming you have the standard: Yes, mostly due to the WiFi.
I don't know why the CDMA cell radio eats soo much of it up.
I'm currently at 62 hours of up time (came off the charger at the same time) with about 3.25 hours of actual screen on time. Mostly on wifi just as you. Ive had 6 phone calls, many text messages, and some basic screwing around on the phone and I'm only down to 36% battery so far. Stock red battery (1500 or 1600mah, whichever it is)

my own, Jiminy V, but you probably won't be really interested in it unless you're on Cricket as it has all Sprint stuff yanked out. However, the Reengineered 3.70 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878670) I would imagine would give you the same results as it was I used as my base rom.

about 4 hours. a little over an hour a day. I'm not glued to my phone like some of you guys are. It stays in my pocket and I pull it out to check the time or send a text message. It gets hundreds of 10-15 second bursts each day.
I'll admit that for the sake of seeing how far I could get the battery to stretch I haven't been sitting around watching youtube and playing angry birds all day....
looks better than what i get

Hah indeed, I lasted through a 3 day weekend drinking binge on one charge and it was amazing. Probably not half of that for screen on time. Its been said and I find it to be true, when not in use it does hold its own in terms of a charge.
I can't even imagine what my battery stats would be if I played games or watched videos, tbh. 24 hours with 3 or more hours of screen on time is good enough for me.
Had to ask, was only curious

I'm currently at 62 hours of up time (came off the charger at the same time) with about 3.25 hours of actual screen on time. Mostly on wifi just as you. Ive had 6 phone calls, many text messages, and some basic screwing around on the phone and I'm only down to 36% battery so far. Stock red battery (1500 or 1600mah, whichever it is)

That is rediculous! I wish the new EVO's could run custom kernals. I get about 15-20 hours with moderate to heavy use, which isnt bad but if I could get 2 days that would be great.

Its all based on usage. I tend to get 5-10 hours of usage (depending on what I am doing) That can be over a 12, 24, 48 hour period.
From what I see, its really based on how much you use it, and what you are doing.
On a full charge of the 1500 stock battery, I get 5.25 hours of video playback watching movies on a plane.

Now we all know the real test (mind u, I don't drive) is with having GPS on... b4 root having it on for a 40 min ride would eat up my battery entirely. Ouch that was painful to see.

I am getting incredible battery life!

I have to say that after some experimintation I am getting consistantly incredible batter life. For instance, I took off charger at 6:00 am at 100% fully charged this am. It is now 6:00 PM (12 hrs) constant MS Exchange updating, internet browsing, and about 2.5 hrs on phone calls, I now have 81%.
Some facts:
I am on stock KG5
the following definatly made the batter life wose:
Beautiful Widgets
Widget Locker Lockscreen
I have NO battery monitor programs like Juice Defender. In fact I have purchased Juice Defender Ultimate and I saw a slight decrease in perforance.
I have to following apps installed:
Sirius XM Premium online
App2SD Pro
Google Maps update
MLB At Bat 2011
Scanner Radio Pro
You Tube update
OI File Manager
Only downfalls of KG 5 is no video with the Google talk and Flash crashes with the browser. Tried KH1 and KH3, not ready for prime time.
Thoughts and comments welcome.

I think the problem is not the battery mate. You have the same problem than me. Talking two hours and a half by phone every day is nasty, I am sure you have about 80 mails every day like me. This is the real problem to solve, we have to work less so the battery will last more , and kick someone asses who are always calling us and giving problems
100 battery threads but i didnt yet find a clear answer if 2.3.4 improves battery life or not..i wait for the official release so i didnt use any 2.3.4 rom yet...
i too have awesome battery life! my phone was unplugged 13hrs 17m 15s ago and now has 88% remaining..... stock bvkg3 orange rom...
I'm tired of these threads. It's not like samsung sold some phones with good battery life and some without. They are ALL the EXACT SAME.
You can't have a 'better' battery life than another SGS2 user. You can't have a 'worse' battery life either. What matters is usage.
Anyone can get 'incredible' battery life - simply install any ROM such as cog or vr, and do a full wipe. Install only 10 apps, and use the phone sporadically, dare I say, use the phone 'as a phone'.
What I'm trying to say is that the people reporting 52 hours of battery life or what not simply do not use the phone as much as others do. If it sounds logical, that's because it is.
There is no 'magic pill'. I get 54h on standby because despite having 205 apps, I used betterbatterystats to uninstall the worst offenders. But today for example I got 6h out of my battery because I spent 3h hours with the screen on, 1 hour on GPS navigation in my car, 1 hours taking pictures with the flash on, 1 hour playing angry birds. 205 apps, endless memory resident programs, custom-everything, even my wallpaper is 3d with 16x MSAA through CF3d, what did I expect?
The whole Iphone comparison is also whack. I own an iphone 4. Sure when stock the thing flies and stays on battery like you wouldn't believe. But try to customize it and you'll find the same problems that you find on android. Plus, it's twice as heavy as my sgs2
I prefer using my sgs2 as a laptop, the battery life is still better than my acer.
I call bs. But while Im at it i get over 100 hours on my battery. On standby. Omg. I can't believe how long my phone lasts when I don't use it.
Or.
I used my phone 15 hours today. 5 hours screen time. Heavy wifi and cell data. .and snes emulator 2 hours. And I still had 30%. Omfg incredible. I can't believe it not butter. And these are my usual stats or the like. And I don't have a sgs2. I don't get to jizz my pants every day like you guys. Omg. This must be the most incredibly dumb post I've ever posted.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Wow... so much anger in this forum.
There is a simple solution to all of u angry birds, when u see a thread with the word "battery" in it, run away as fast as u can, and dont look back, ur wasting ur time and others by posting useless angry replies, so cut the crap and grow up...
to the op, thanks for ur post it was helpful at least to me if that counts.

Wow. 4 hours. On a charge. Omfg. Incredible. I get about 7 hours. On a charge. I guess all that wifi/cell data, email sync, emulators and text make me a light user. Tucks tail between legs.

@cigaro78 You are sooo wrong! The batteries are not all the same. It depends on many factors (how they are stored before shipping, and lotof thing).
Last year i did some test on 5 exact same new mobile phones (samsung omnia i900) and 2 of them have battery wear of 24%.
So the point is that you coud buy a new phone with some percentage of damaged battery.
Thats a first thing, the second thisng is that firmware (battery optimisation) could extremely reduce or extend battery life, depanding on optimisation.
I tried 5 firmwares, 3 of them 2.3.3 and 2 - 2.3.4. (all stock roms)
Best battery experience I had with 2.3.3 XWKF3 (2.3.3), and the worst on XXKH3 (2.3.4), but for some users 2.3.4 is way better for battery.
I can't get over 16h of normal usage at all. (1h phone talk, 50-80 messages, 25 emails, 30 mins on internet (3G) and about 20 mins of playing amtale). DIsplay usage is 44% (auto), 25% Voice calls, 10% android OS, Internet 9% Android system 8% etc...
I was quite chuffed with mine, 2d 12 hours! admittedly not heavy usage but moderate!

I sold mine to my friend so sometimes I check on progress. And am I wrong about the tegra 2 vs exynos thing? Honestly i've heard arguments for both sides but wouldn't mind another opinion. Sorry to hijack.

Best Battery ROM

OK so i installed almost every ROM on there and here is what i found.
TOP.
:good: CleanGB ---- Takes the crown, super fast battery charge in less then 45minutes the battery is full. Over a period of 8 hours in stand by(as i sleep) the battery did not drop at all.
CM9 ---- Took over 2.5 hours to charge the battery, in 8 hours it dropped 12% battery life.
CM7 --- Charged in 1.7 hours and dropped 17% battery in 8 hours.
The rest were terrible, I would not even bother.
All configuration were the same. Everything off (wifi, gps, etc)
After all i installed CleanGB again at the end. And guess what in the past 8 hours battery did not at all in standby. My phone last 3 days on the same battery charge again, with normal to moderate use.
This was the same battery same settings.
Let me know if you guys found something else.
GUI experience:
CleanGB is cool and simple, however i wish they would upgrade to Android 4
CM9 has an really cool interface but i can not tolerate the battery drain issue.
CM7 is the worst of the two, not so great GUI and bad battery life.
If you still think im crazy install CleanGB and see for yourself. CM9 just needs to focus on the battery drain.
CleanGB is more focused on the phone working as it should and they did that really well. :good:

CM10 isn't horrible, I think it's a step above CM9 honestly, Mine charges over night so i don't know how much it would drain. during a day of moderate use (texting, reading XDA and what not) I'm generally about 65% or so (If not higher)

The People's ROM. It's as good as CleanGB (ran that for several months) and is based off the latest official release (FC09).
My one personal cheat is to use the CleanGB kernel with TPR, so that may be why I get fantastic battery life.

Never going to happen. CleanGB (and TPR) are both stock TouchWiz based ROMs and it's not too likely that Sprint will offer an ICS update for the Epic.

ROFL!!! :good:
As to the topic, I have seen it posted by a massive number of users, that CM7 had much better battery life than CM9.
In fact, the number one reason I saw posted as to why people went back to CM7, after checking out CM9, was battery life.

This 100%
I' am on Cut & Paste Rom FC09 and this has given be best battery life as of today. I had clean GB earlier (sometime back) after which i tried all the other Roms (AOKP - ICS, MIUI - ICS, RandomRom 5.1) and then decided to try C&P and man this rocks !
I have got a battery life of 2 days with a talk time (voice call) of 4 hours and thats the best i have seen till now among all of the Roms on my phone
legendary.mtd + gps fix is just as good as cleanGB plus it has the 15 toggle mod
try AOKP, people says it has better bettery life than CM9, so you can keep the "cool interface" while saving battery lol. Me myself never bother with battery as long as it last more than 1 hours. Always carrying one of those portable charger, If the battery is low then charge it haha.

+1 for aokp...with the nexus modem. Typical 3 hours screen on time, over 18 hours on. Time with out signal under 4% every day. Used to be around 15% with epic modem under same conditions. Using 1800 touch battery.

Hmm perhaps I need to have didhiy do the kernel fix. There's a fix on the nexus s since people had the same problem. So far, I've only seen you and another person on the epic having that issue, which is odd. Talk to him though, since he fixed it somehow. His name is popssracer.

In my personal experiences, the newest Cut & Paste ROM has AMAZING battery life. I can get over a day easily at home all day with no charge, and maybe 15-24 hours out in the world (I'm a professional touring musician, so there's times where I have NO charging source at all).
What I noticed also has equal or better battery life to TouchWiz are MIUI ROMs. If you can manage your power usage and turn off data services when you aren't using them, I could EASILY get days out of battery on 2.1.6.
