My (like) NEW HTC EVO for your Samsung Epic 4G - Epic 4G General

This might be a hard one, but dammit if I'm gonna try. First off i live in Oregon, Portland area.
My EVO has been a trooper ever since launch day. But, JUST THE OTHER DAY I got the screen and outer gloss casing replaced under warranty. so it looks just DAMN new. pretty much new. So there isn't a scratch at all.
What I'm looking for is a Samsung Epic 4G. It needs to be in good condition, meaning no scratches and the latches need to be flawless, and the keys cant be worn off. My EVO is just as pristine.
I will include the original box and stuff that came with the EVO. Also, a rubber outer case, which I found to be the best for everyday use. My EVO IS ROOTED. So you can have all the fun with that...
Hate Samsung's TouchWiz interface? Give HTC Sense a try! Trust me, its better...
IF YOU FEEL YOU HAVE BEEN MISSING OUT ON ALL THE FROYO ACTION WITH YOUR EPIC, THEN THE EVO IS YOUR THANG!
The only reason I'm doing this is because my mom just got an Epic, and I ended up liking it a lot, and want to make sure i can help her out with it if i ever need too. There is nothing wrong with the EVO.
**If you would like me to install a custom rom on the EVO, I can do that too to sweeten the deal, if you want.** *currently has Cyanogen Mod* tell me what you want, you want stock? Will do. You want stock but rooted? My cup of tea. I'll make sure you going into a new EVO will be a good one.

****. Well, I live in Olympia, WA. Let me think about it a little bit. I'd of course like to meet up somewhere and make the trade. For reference there is one defect with my Epic and that is that the Micro USB port sliding cover thing has been stuck since day 2 of having the phone. Let me know now if that is a dealbreaker but I'd definitely need to think about it.
Also, right now my Epic is running a leaked Froyo build, Mammon's Bonsai4all Rom with ext4 and no journaling, as you can see from my sig its quite blazing (I know people get wierded out by quadrant sometimes but if you go read the thread on bonsai4all you'll see my results are quite typical).

Olympia isnt that bad! Can you post or PM me a picture of the "defect"? Im interested in trading with you and your Epic. I'm free all next week.

I have owned two EVOs in the past one had screen seperation issues, both had at least one dead pixel. Does yours have any of these issues?

none of these issues, as i have a new screen and outter gloss cassing bracket on the EVO.

I am about to trade my epic for a white evo in a 1 hr

I owned a evo since release date but than traded it for the epic but the lack of support from samsung and a couple of bugs,I decided am going back to the evo, hopefully I don't regret it!!!but froyo and possible gingerbread official,I know we have leaked froyo don't tell me that ,but like I said leaked no source code yet so no is not at it full potential....

PM has been sent. .

replied, thanks

so are you looking for a trade? Pm me!

Yeah but this one guy is suppose to trade w me in like 45min but am in chicago

Right on, hope it works out for you... i might switch this to local only... because I'm starting to realize the heartache this could be as my EVO is my daily phone.

Epic is good phone but there's more support for the evo,

The EVO has a big Dev community. I'll definitely admit that...

Moved on, c ya guys

Hey guys. I've finally bit the bullet and moved on from the Hero. My new phone is the LG Optimus S. The one thing I'll say to you guys is if you have an available upgrade but don't want to pay some bullcrap 4G charge and a few hundred bucks, the Optimus S is the way to go. With the stock ROM, it's already snappier and quicker than the Hero, even overclocked and with CM. My sister has my Hero, and as of tonight we're not really on good terms with each other, so I doubt I'll be able to contribute much to the Hero anymore.
So with that, I bid you all farewell.
P.S: I'll still be on XDA though, don't worry about that!
Off you go

my twopointtwo theme is currently getting ported to the optimus by some guys over in the android central forums
From HEROC to EVO SHIFT
This has been a great experience for me and my HEROC. Thanks to all the DEVS that supported this phone to the end.
I have recently upgraded my HEROC to a EVO SHIFT. Hopefully, I will see some of you over the Evo Shift Forums and we could all start over.
Looking forward to rooting, roming, and to the development of this new phone. I'll check back once in a while to see what kind of progreess the Heroc is getting.
Take care y'all...
I'd consider an Optimus S if there were forums for it on XDA.
Is there CyanogenMod for it? Custom Kernels? etc.......
Awesome! I am awaiting arrival of my Optimus as I type, come on UPS There is already some development as far as rom and OC Kernel happening. First thing I want to try and mod is getting Firerats to work I am happy to see your grabbing of the Optimus S, I seen Deca tweet something about possibly grabbing it too! Join the forum if you havent already, Thunder Rom looks to be fastest!

Just ordered an Opt. S today also. Did a lot of soul searching before I did it (trying to decide between OS & Evo) and I just couldn't look at myself in the mirror paying the extra $10 for non existent 4G...

That'd be awesome if Decad3nce joins the Optimus S boat! Really, I don't even see a need for overclocking the Optimus S (sad to say it). Undervolt would be nice, but not an overclock. Everything already runs so smooth and snappy, it feels like what Android is really supposed to be. I've been running live wallpapers and ADW Launcher, and the scrolling is SMOOTH, no jaggies or anything. If you're looking for a regular 3G Android phone on Sprint, the Optimus S is the way to go.
I'll go register on Android Central so I can start with that I was thinking about seeing if I could compile AOSP 2.3 for it, so I'm going to try my hand at that
EDIT
I think gbhil has the Optimus S too!!

Well I have had my optimus S for a little over 1 hour and this thing is pretty bad ass! I hit 1262 in quadrant, I can play Angry Birds in REAL time, LOL. The phone has a good feel in my hands, like the hero does. I only wish the screen were the same, but I will get over it. The custom rom "Thunder Rom" is fast, I will make some edits of course. Who knows if we can get enough users maybe we can get Cyanogen Mod for it
The only difference is the screen is made of fiberglass instead of actual glass... But believe it or not, I kind of like the fiberglass better. The screen is slicker even without any oil on it, unlike the glass screen.
I'm going to see if I can port my CyanogenSense theme over to it
you gonna try a webos port to that phone too? j/k
enjoy your phone, im sure glad i dumped my hero when i did and got the evo. people are dropping like flies around here. ive never seen soo many people leave a phone in a little over a years time. that goes to say alot.

Yeah, I have a feeling that if Sprint gave better support for the Hero and din't just dump it, people wouldn't have left so fast. Believe it or not, the Optimus is just as snappy and quick as my friend's Galaxy S... It's remarkable when you go from the Hero to another phone, because you can actually see how Android is supposed to run. I don't even need a task killer anymore, since the Optimus doesn't slow down at all.

Should i get the HTC Evo

I am thinking of getting this phone but if heard some bad things about it. ive had non stop issues with phones since the HTC mogul. i had the HTC mogul replaced 9 times due to keyboard failures, then HTC touch they sent me and HATED it, then they sent me HTC touch pro and it was decent but had it replace 23 times due to keyboard issues even after the redesign of them. then i got the palm pre and after the 3rd replacement they gave me a HTC Hero which i love. but i dont like how slow it is tho but the style and sense system i really like..
so is getting the HTC evo a good idea?
so for being so long
Seeing that this is an EVO forum I'd guess most people will say it's a great phone.
Why don't you tell us what you're looking for in a phone. There are a few really nice phones coming out in the upcoming months. Do you have to be on Sprint?
get it you dont know what your missing out on
I don't think you will have keyboard issues with an EVO......
What are you doing to your phones to have them replaced that many times? I have never heard of anyone having so many issues before.
omg!
23 times... that is twice a month for a year!!!!
really?? IF true.. i would be a hell raiser in their store.. they would be scared to see me coming every other week!!!!
why would you want another HTC device?? you love punishment?
that said...
I love my EVO!! best phone out .. RIGHT NOW.
but... there are issues with a small portion of these phones..
and with your luck with htc..you will find all of them.. or they will find you!
normally i tell people to get th evo... but you... i hesitate.

with verizon i had 39 replacements in 2 years (i broke the front screen of one of those phones, everything else wasn't my fault) Since switching to sprint i had one replacement since june.
If you liked the Hero you will love the Evo has all of the features and so much more, plus FASTER!
Go for it, there is always the 30 day return option.

lol the 23 replacements were with in 6 month's. they were internal issues. i always use a case, screen protectors. i am very careful with these phones since there so damn expensive
im looking for something as close to the Hero as possible. ive heard alot of good about the Evo, but also alot of bad.
also thank you for very fast replies
I have never had to replace a phone -- I guess that's just me though. All I know is that if I ever had that much trouble with a phone maker, I would never again buy their product.
Edit: I have never had an issue with my Evo and I have done a lot of flashing. I have also switched 10 of my friends to an Evo and the only complaint has been battery life - which was easily handled with rooting.

i really enjoy the HTC phones and the things i can do with them. and with the android system im am very pleased. i just always get lemons. im not exactly on the lucky side lol. but i have had no issues with the HTC hero. only issue i screw up loading a new rom and it locked the phone up but i fixxed it.
I had a hero before my evo too. I loved that phone to death, but it was so damn slow. So when the evo came out I got it, and ive only had 1 replacement since july because the phone broke inside. Overall this phone is amazing. I dont have any problems with battery and the phone is super fast. Definitely get this phone!!!
thank you speedy.
@ Maximiano, i kno i keep going back to HTC but its the style of them i like. im bound to get a good one eventually and the hero has worked so far. as for the battery..... im use to it. the palm pre had a HORRID battery life. i was lucky to make it 4 hours out of the few i had.
Well I think the battery on the Evo is good. I unplug my phone at 6am every day and plug it in at 10pm every day. At 6pm im at 50% so this phone holds up durring the day. As for use:
30 mins of calling
50 txt
5 emails
20 mins of internet
Angry birds 20 mins
(Angry birds ****s on the battery)

Honestly i say yes. The Evo feels good, its fast. Even stock sense isn't that bad. You have the option to root your phone, can stay on a sense rom, and with different kernels, you can make your phone perform faster. The Evo is all touch, so no keyboard to replace.
lol angry birds rules. its so slow on the hero. but by the sounds of it. seems like its about the same life as my hero.
i do:
50-200 txt messaging.
15 emails
2 hours of music/movies
15 min-30 min of talk time.
15min-1 hour of a game. (zenonia, angry bird, ect.)
@ teh roxxorz
lol im sick of keyboard replacing. i miss how fast i use to be with a pull out keyboard but i been doing well with a touch screen. and that swype ive seen seems interesting. but thank you for the tips
The EVO is an amazing device and you wont go wrong by getting it. The stock software is passable but we have an awesome development community here and a TON of great ROMs to choose from. That being said, im sure Sprint will be releasing its successor come summertime so if you can stand it, i would wait to see whats coming out. 22 months is a long time to wait for an upgrade so you'll be kicking yourself if you buy the EVO now only to have the EVO2 (or whatever it will be called) come out a few months into your new contract.

Really?
I'll go with the lack of Dev support and poor manufacturer support. Samsung is concerned with pushing new products on you, not with supporting products you have already purchased. Everyone knows the over hyped galaxy S line is still on 2.1 while everyone else is about to go to 2.3 and beyond.
If that's "FSD", then I have it too.

I have an HTC Touch I'm willing to trade.
This has been a telepathic transmission from the Outer Limits.
I actually LOVED my last Samsung.. (forget the name, it was the flat flip phone a couple yrs back)... BUT....
That being said, I actually GOT an epic the 1st week it was out... when the stores were out of the Evo's.
I played with a friends Evo and returned the Epic the next day.
It was mostly because of the "feel" of the phone. Cheap imo compared to the bulk feel of the Evo.
I'm hard on phones and the wobbly slider moved everytime I lifted it to my ear. It just felt too plastic-y to me.
The screen was def. beautiful but not worth it to be. If I watching movies or playing games, or wasn't so rough on phones I may have very well stuck with the Epic. But the Evo is for me. I think it just depends on what you are wanting out of your phone.

The Evo takes damn good pictures. So good, in fact, that I gave my camera to a friend of mine because her phone sucks at taking pictures.
As for the Epic, I still have the files to restore Epic to stock and unrooted because my friend owns an Epic and can't seem to get any decent rom installed without a plethora of instructions.
Instructions for flashing a rom on an evo:
boot into recovery
wipe all
flash rom
*flash kernel (optional)*
*flash themes (optional)*
reboot
enjoy
for like 95% of our roms and only the really experimental ones don't follow that process. The epic? you have to use odin, you have to install multiple files (like CM, but more frustrating), then you have to worry about compatibility. My friend hasn't been able to flash a stable froyo rom yet and we have stable gingerbread roms with 4g. Ridiculous.
Samsung used to build a great phone, I was a big fan of the Rant for awhile. It was heavy, durable and actually good looking. The epic looks like a slider smartphone would've looked 2 years ago. Thick, plastic, cheap feeling, light and thick. However, it is an Android phone, which makes it 100 times better than an iPhone.
I'm an Android fanboy, I'll admit it. I've used W7 and iOS and I just don't feel the power user love that I feel with an Android phone

The Evo takes damn good pictures. So good, in fact, that I gave my camera to a friend of mine because her phone sucks at taking pictures.

That's good to hear. I get great low light pictures and the built in panoramics are nice too on the epic. May have someone wanting to trade in my area.

Made the Epic switch.

I recently switched from the EVO to the Epic, got sick of fealing with the screen lifting away from the last 2 replacements nd got Sprint to replace it with a new Epic, and I love this phone.
The only thing I've noticed is that there seems to be larger selection of custom roms, other than that the phone is amazing.
Anyone else make the switchM

There is less of a selection. But the hardware is far superior. The screen is so much better. If you've already rooted. Definately flash the acs syndicate rom. And odin the ee05 modem. You'll be amased how much faster this phone is then the evo. And I personaly will never buy a cell phone that does not the the super amoled screen. Everything else just looks like trash

Welcome!
I also would recommend the syndicate frozen rom at this time.
I as well suggest the frozen rom. Since I flashed that rom, my love for this phone grew even larger. Lol.
Posted by some phone named the Epic.
+1 for ACS SyndicateROM Frozen!
I used stock EE03 for a few days...too slow. Maybe I am spoiled with EXT4

I just made the switch too, from the hero. man what a diferrence! Now to read up on how to do mods on this as I see some terms that I didnt see on the hero forum.
I have a feeling a LOT of people are going to be switching over now that the Epic is basically free with a new contract from best buy and many other places.
My biggest suggestion to Epic 4g newbies is to read and follow what the devs say exactly when you are flashing their roms. Don't think that "you know better" because you have had other Android phones. The Epic is kinda a weird beast and likes to be treated like a special lady. So when a dev says to wipe data 3x in CWM, yes it sounds stupid, but thats the kinda treatment your new phone requires.
Welcome, enjoy! I'm kinda busy finding fun things to flash to make the perfect theme for myself... Great community, graet phones and great minds. Btw, Mystery reports more speed in 1.2 than in 1.1.1.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

How can it be unrootable "again"? If it was unrootable the first time, then how did we get it?

Yes, you are absolutely right. The updated ROM from Sprint will never be rooted.
NEVER. EVER.
Has anyone tried to run an old Froyo RUU on a brand new Shift that came with Gingerbread?

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

Yes, and man will never go to the moon. We will never be able to fly. Come on man .
PS. Don't knock the Site, or the Dev's. The work they do is because they want to, it's not an obligation.
after the samsung moment debacle i will never own another samsung phone. to me the epic is a moment on steroids. its still a POS lol. glad i switched to the shift

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Rooting in and of itself isn't going to make a damn bit of difference in battery life. It's what you do with the root that counts... lol, sounds like a phallic joke gone bad...
