Hello-
First off, please excuse my n00bness - I'm from the world of Windows Mobile hacking, and this Android stuff is really confusing me.
I've been tolerating stock for a while, but the slowness is really getting to me - today I clocked my Hero at 12 seconds to wake up from standby, which is just unacceptable. I'd like to know if there are any significant speed benefits to going from stock to the latest MoDaCo rom? Are there any downsides? I read the post over at modaco.com, but couldn't see any "known issues".
Thanks for any input,
TM
Take the plunge.
I went from stock to Fresh and overlayed Modaco. My uptime shot to 90%, 80% and stuck at 70%.
I reflashed to Stock then back to Modaco. I am now at around 15% uptime. I removed the bloatware from Sprint and LOVE the speed of this phone now. Its what I expected when I bought it.
I have no doubt that you'll see a speed increase with Modaco. Especially if you remove the sprint apps once you load Modaco.
Thanks for all the replies. One more question though, are there any big known issues with the latest MoDaCo? I thought I read something about BT not working, or something to that extent.
it's worth it to switch to any custom rom. bluetooth is just something thats messed up with our 1.5 builds.

you will notice a big difference switching to modaco 2.2... and im not experiencing any BT issues at all... matter or fact, im not experiencing ANY issues with anything using this rom...
Heck, anything is better than stock.
especially since we have a custom kernel now its definitely worth it to go to any custom rom, especially modaco 2.2
Im using fresh. I used the kitchen to root my phone and installed 1.1. No problems so far except that the voice recorder app keep crashing for some reason. I did an upgrade without wiping though so that might be my problem.
Its a lot faster and the tether app is awesome!
Ok, so far so good. Got everything flashed, but how do I get rid of things like Stocks/Sprint TV/NFL/etc? Just follow the generic guide (for any rooted Hero) I saw?
I ran stok for about 6 hours and decided that I didnt pay that much money for a smart phone that was that slow.
I flashed Fresh 1.0 to start and I have tried just about all the roms that are out there. Including modaco 2.2 and it may just be that I started with fresh but I always seem to go back to it over the rest, and add onto that the modaco kernel with compcache and then doing the config tweak found here my phone just flies now.
I now have it set to where I feel a phone at this price point should be to start.
edit: to remove the apps follow the instructions found here

Use the Fresh Kitchen to pull any you don't want.
You know what? I've flashed MoDaCo's ROM before, but it was just too much like stock (except for the obvious speed increases). I flashed Fresh 1.1, and loved it because it had the speed of MoDaCo's, plus the Espresso UI. Then I recently flashed Gumbo Kernel to my phone, and omgwtfzorz my phone is RIDICULOUSLY fast. Not noticeably, but RIDICULOUSLY. I can't believe you've been living with stock for this long >.< Custom ROM's and kernels are necessary for this phone haha.
I've been using pretty much only Cyanogens Roms for about a year now. But I'd like to know what people opinions are, concerning the FASTEST rom available for the dream.
This is quite likely to not change as most people are now developing 2.1 roms, that won't be complete until the video drivers are released.
What does everyone think?
Interesting post... I've currently running CM4.2.5 mainly because all of the new versions run a lot slower than this version!
Haven't really bothered looking elsewhere yet, but would be really interested in the answer to this post.
I don't really see what you get with 2.0/2.1 that is worth putting up with a less responsive handset.
Super D or Dwangs.
I used to use Cyanogen until I tried Dwangs (then messed around with Eclair builds) and then Super D.
They're VERY fast. Super D more than Dwang I would say.
Definately Super D!
Currently running no comcache (fix is in the pipeline) and no swap and this rom flies! God only knows how much faster it can get with comcache!
Super D is the fastest but when I flashed a theme on top it wasn't responsive anymore. Most notably the screen would go into standby and never come out of it.
I would recommend the Rom on my signature.
For me riite now is dwang

Also, note that even a clean wipe and flash of the Super D resulted in the same results.
Even a nandroid restore couldn't fix the issue.
Biggest problem is the ram hack, some of us still want 3D game performance...
I'm using Dwang and loving it. Much much faster than the recent cyanogens and more stable.
I haven't tried super D.
Super D for me! Although I tried that CSDI which is by far the fastest and doesn't use the RAM hack - I just don't like some of the minor things in it.
Add me to the SuperD list. By far the fastest and most stable ROM I've used in the last six months.
Dwang by far, I've used pretty much every 1.6 ROM out there.
CM, I'm sorry but I find just way too slow, unresponsive and oddly for me often drops text messages and is not reliable in receiving MMS.
Dwang is just lightning fast for me for the most part, the 10MB hack with a compromise on 3D gaming is a bit of an annoyance. I have however noticed quite a bit more force closes on Super D, usually with Android framework, however that could just be the theme (DarkStar) I'm using. I've been using this ROM for months now though however, I just wish they would update, its been a while.
EDIT: I dont know why I said Super D, I meant to say Dwang -_-
BoogieDonut.5 is pretty good too
This week I jumped from cyan's latest to Wes's latest to Super D... Super D really was smokin. I think it's the crack!
Rogers users like me have no choice
Ion r1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520097&highlight=ion+haykuro+r1 (though you'll have to dig around to find the actual r1 instead of r2 which became significantly slower).
Hey, you did ask "Fastest 1.5/1.6 rom out there!", didn't you?
Nothing, I repeat, nothing, has yet been as stupidly fast as the Ion 1.5 r1 build, and it's still by and far the benchmark against which all other rom's speed is weighted.
So Super D seems like the fastest going by number of votes.
Which version are you all using?
Hope this helps
for a Android 1.5- MLIGN 3.2B (not 3.3) or KingKlick Hero-Sense Hybrid 2.3. VERY FAST Hero ROMs and GREAT for everyday usage. I even had MLIGN 3.2B on my phone for about a month...then cyangoen released 4.2.14.1 and I wanted to try that out but right now I'm restoring MLGIN 3.2B.
for Android 1.6- I will say the latest Cyanogen with the RAM hack or the latest Super D.
Cyanogen- He lets you actually choose if you want the RAM hack or not. If you want the RAM hack then flash the right file via terminal. He has a Nexus One now so he is deving for the g1/mt3g and the Nexus One but he will still dev for the g1/mt3g.
Super D- Pretty good ROM. It is a mixture of Dwang and Cyanogen so it is pretty fast but I found that you can't really run more than 4 apps before it slows down A LOT. But this already has the RAM hack already installed so it is bad for 3D gamers but good for those lazy people that don't know simple terminal commands.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND DWANG RIGHT NOW. He never updated his ROM in like 3 months. I flashed Dwang 1.17.1 (the latest) and I found it way worse than Cyanogen and Super D.
Hope my lengthy advice helped.
Super D
I'm interested in putting the Super D version of 1.6 on my G1 but I'm having trouble finding it. Does anyone have a link?
Thanks

okay so as you know i created a few roms now based on 2.1. i know that shocked most of you because i never liked 2.1 that much to begin with, it felt slow & bulky even after flashing several roms. so i decided to make my own based on fresh 2.0d. now i will admit they are pretty fast and i enabled jit on my phone too but for the hell of it i went and restored my trusty pancake 1.5c backup as a test. the difference is like night & day. speed wise and free ram wise. now mind you i have the exact same # of apps on each rom and pretty much set up the same way minus different themes.
so my question is why does it seem 1.5 is soo much smoother & faster?
maybe it's the tweaked 1.5c kernel in the pancake rom?
and yes i know were still trying to get the bugs worked out of JIT but i did this test just for myself to see if i can improve upon my roms at all.
maybe its a placebo effect? i dont remember 1.5 being much snappier than the current 2.1. the fastest rom with no hang ups i've ever used is the now defunct 1.6 aosp =( if it wasnt for the camera i'd still be using it.

no, it's not that. everything is 10x snappier and the free ram is at least 20% higher than the fresh 2.0 based roms. it's not a big deal i guess just something i had to do but it has me thinking now.

im pretty sure camera works on 1.6 only thing that doesnt is camcorder and bluetooth i believe could be wrong though but im almost positive cam works
Eris based roms
I too am disappointed with the speed of the sprint based 2.1 roms. I do think that 1.5 is comparable. However, I get the best performance out of the Eris based 2.1 roms. I have even found fresh toast 1.1 to be choppier than DC1.0, which I use as my daily. Fresh toast does many things very fast, but it is just too choppy. DC1.0 runs her smooth. in fact, the only difference I find is neocore running at 29 with DC1.0, as opposed to 34 with fresh toast. However, that difference is not reflected in 3d games like those by polarbit, or in web browsing (which actually seems slower), or even in navigating sense, which is just choppy.
You are comparing a pre-release, admittedly buggy ROM against an established production ROM. Of course 2.1 (pre) will be slower.
I will assume the Sprint released 2.1 will have possibly the same performance as the 1.5 ROM (possibly smoother -- depending on HTC's intent in releasing the ROM).
Unfortunately, our hardware was dated from the start and is our main challenge.
Please don't take this as a flame. Just an observation/opinion.
All the roms accept for modaco's have problems, small or big they just annoy me.
Just wanted to get that out of my system.
I don't mean to offend anyone! Especially not the devs I do respect your work. This is my opinion.
Other 1.5 time? Your not comparing Modaco with 2.1 are you?

All .
I just flashed the new Cronos Rom ( 1.4.1 non-oc) and it's great.
What issues do you mean? Maybe this Rom is a thing you should try
Every ROM other than Modaco and Kimera8 are laggy, buggy pieces of ****.
cronosdroid v1.4 is an amazing rom! lightning quick and zero errors so far ad have been using since release.
i use vanilla eclair 3.0 overclocked at 653 runs perfect for me, no problems found at least for me till now.
Why overclock?? Just try CronosDroid and you'll discover a new world...At 518 degr...ERRR...Mhz! Smooth, fast and with a JIT versione! Overclockable (but fast as hell at 518 Mhz) up to 720 Mhz! Linpack is 3.6/3.7 MFlops and 3D is WONDERFUL (31 FPS Neocore without sound and 26/27 with sound)!

So you start your post saying you don't need an overclock then go on to say how it makes everything so much better. Sort your head out mate.
superhero, sensehero (not tried build 4 yet)
id recommend villainrom but only once the new rom has been out a few days and all the issues have been found and fixed. Its lightning fast, has all the features and used properly can give you amazing battery life. I charged my phone to 100% took at off at 11am sunday morning. Made a few phone calls (nothing major) sent a few texts, played about 10 minutes of games and used tapatalk for 30 mins. Battery on Monday evening at 9.20pm is 65%

Uhm.. maybe because Modaco's custom ROM is based on an official build (including an official kernel)?
Once an official 2.1 build from HTC is out for the Hero, all the problems (small, big and the ones that annoy you) should be gone. All the recent 2.1 ROMs are ports (ROMs which are designed for other phones), of course there'll be bugs.
I suggest you try Cronos, I assure you, you will not be disappointed
I was using Modaco for 3 months before switching to Cronos, haven't looked back since
I now revert from this opinion.
CMH is the best rom i've ever seen, I had sense disabled on MCR. But this is just to good to be true. A clean android phone no crappy HTC ****. Just clean android goodness
I LOVE THIS ROM!!!
It's "except" not "accept" .....
Greetings folks,
Just getting my say in but i am more than happy with SenseHero B5.1
I have tested a lot of roms from 1.5 to 2.2 and keep going back to B5,
I THOUGHT that a2sd was not working but then removed my sd card and apps gone,
Plugged the card back in and apps back so guess its working ok,
From first install all working great Mobile network / gps / wife Ect,
And there is a lod of mods you can get for the rom also,
No matter what rom i put on it never lasts longer than 3 days or so and i am back to SenseHero again,
But as i said thats just me,
Regards
Steven
Hey,
im currently running Floyo on my HTC Hero. Im wondering what is the currently fastest and best running Rom out there.
Are the other Froyo Roms out there better than Floyo? Why are they better?
Shall i test the Gingerbread Roms? Are they faster than the Froyo Roms? Do they run better on your Devices ? What about the battery life?
fiden
from my experience I think elelinux 6.2 is the fastest, but for me it's also a little unstable unless he's solved that problem since I used it (which was a few weeks ago).
floyo is really good too though so you might want to stay where you are.
make sure to use launcherpro which is by far the fastest launcher on the hero.
gingerbread is fairly fast but not really as instantaneous to respond to your taps as some of the faster older roms out there. I actually find that cronos eclair light is the fastest rom to respond to my commands, but it's a highly modified 2.1 sense rom which means you're limited to 2.1 features (if that bothers you, it annoys me now that I'm used to gingerbread).
It's a trade off really. gingerbread is the best os so far, but it does have a couple of graphical framerate issues in UI screen transitions and some 3d stuff.
It's camera might not be quite as fast or good as with older roms also, however I'm not convinced of that yet.
You can always create a nandroid of your current setup (or a bart which will be a bigger backup but will include your ext partition - sort of a necessary thing imho). then wipe all and try a gb rom. you can restore to your floyo bart backup any time if you decide to.
Froyo at the moment is very rock stable and still faster than Gingerbread (Beta). It's like comparing Windows XP and Windows Vista. GB beta offers something interesting. However, from time to time, you may experience FC, lag, GPS problem, unexplained reboot and some apps not useable (not updated yet for GB). The default camera on GB is still bad, very colourless. If you use alternative like Camera 360, only then it is good. If you use GPS a lot, bear in mind Runkeeper or Buddy Runner will have problem connecting to GPS. My daily working ROM is also Floyo 1.20. Use Nandroid to backup your Froyo first. Wipe all, Flash any GB ROM (I had tried Ele's 0.6 and Cronos' 1.10) to try out yourselves.

I haven't tried LP for a few months, but I am quite sure Zeam is faster
Of course Zeam doesn't have as many features.
Ive been running GB for about two weeks and have only had one lock up. (mind you I was reinstalling all my apps while trying to listen to music so probably my fault there..)
Only had 1 FC and that was in Gmail after I changed my signature in the settings but hasnt done it when I edit it since.
Havn't noticed any lag (then again I use Zeam, which flies along anyway),
and I get 3 days battery, half a day more than froyo with the same usage. (then again its using a different Kernel compared to what Froyo was using so that may be why).
As for colourless camera, ive not noticed any difference at all since updating. if it does worry people that much, you guys do know that the stock camera has settings for bumping saturation/contrast/etc up right..? and it remembers the settings so set and forget..?
But yeah. I switched to GB as soon as I was getting reports through it was all stable and nice and I have not been disappointed. In froyo I always used to run into market install problems every so often (items would download but not install, no matter what froyo rom I used this problem used to come and go randomly.) none of that yet!
Have not tried the GPS yet on a proper drive, but on preliminary tests (local runs around the block on foot and in car) I get a fix within 6seconds inside the house by a window and 4seconds out side, Google maps, Copilot and runkeeper all working fine.
As others said. Make a nandroid, full wipe, flash and have a try for a few days.
If you say the Ginger-Roms are still not stable, i will not test them and wait a little time until they are stable . Thanks for your help!!
So is there a difference between the Froyo Roms out there? Shall i test the others like Froyd or Elelinux or Cronos? Somebody made experiences with TastyFroyo from RaduG?
fiden
Im running Cronos Ginger (non-Anim)....
Its much faster than the froyo ROMs i had used in the past. Only problem is that some apps refuse to work... like Opera Mini, Angry Birds 1.5.1
But its not a big deal, its my day-2-day ROM and very useable
So far I'm finding the GB roms pretty damn slow (all of them, including fresh Cyanogen). The fastest ROMs are still probably modded 2.1 sense ROMS, but then your trading features for speed. There are a lot of very fast, stable and feature rich 2.2 ROMs out there though, so that is the safe middle-ground right now.
I've tried a bunch of ROMs, but as far as I can say, Elelinux's CM 7.0.0-based ROM (v0.6) is the fastest of all. Gingerbread ROMs for the Hero have gotten pretty fast over the last couple of weeks.
And concerning the launchers, I'd say Zeam's the fastest.
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
I've tried a lot of rooms too. When I went from eclair to froyo, I found many useful new functions (tethering the first one), but from froyo to ginger what are the advantages? I tried, but then I went back to floyo, the froyo version which gives me the highest scores on tests...
Tests arnt the be all and end all
For example, Tasty gingerbread rom gave me the best scores. but the UI was laggy as hell. the tests are just how information is moved about as apposed to how fast YOU can interact with the device. I hardly ever run tests any more I just use the best testing equipment for me, my eyes lol
hey thanks to all you answers.
So i put an eye on the new Cronos Froyo 1.8.0, which is out since the 10th. Somebody here who tested Cronos Froyo and somebody who can tell me about his experiences with CF?
Cronos is a very good developer... ive tested his roms in the past and there were many good roms out there a couple of them were the best out there!
What about Cronos Froyo?

CF 1.8 is great. Coming from CG 1.1 but CF is much much much faster! Try it, in my eyes no G rom is faster than Froyo.
