this may seem like a silly question, but i have to return my incredible bec they are sending me a replacement, dead pixel, so before i try to root i would like to have it unrooted before i send it back...
so how do you unroot it?
thanx all
At the risk of starting a flamewar (and none of this is directly aimed at the OP):
A lot people need to chill on this. This root method is not ready for prime time yet (that's why they made the disclaimer that it's only really for power users).
As an average user, there is almost nothing gained by having root at this point (other than removing city id and MAYBE gaining tethering). I mean seriously, people who don't even know how to install the android sdk on their computers have no business attempting this.
The main reason most people want root is for custom roms and there aren't any yet.
To answer your question, yes, you can easily undo it with a factory wipe/flash, but again, what's the point in trying it when you have nothing to do with the privileges?
Use one of the RUU post in this forum pre ota or the ota one.

BOOO!
I've been seeing this kind of presumptuous junk pop up again in the Inc thread around the root issue, just like it used to around root season in late '08 for the G1. The one lesson I learned was this:
STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEY'RE NOT SMART/GOOD/CRAFTY ENOUGH TO ROOT!
And if you haven't checked recently, there are a ton of root-only apps on the market. Maybe he just likes #-signs better than $-signs. Whatever his reasons are, just let people be. This forum wouldn't exist if it weren't for natural curiosity.
really though at this point it's kinda based on the SD card you have an timing. to unroot though you just download and run the RUU on the forums here.

Dude,
Aside from the fact that they can break stuff (up to and including bricking their phone - yes I realize this process resulting in a brick is unlikely, but it's still possible), there's also another good reason... security. A lot of these people aren't 'linux guys' and don't even really understand what exactly 'root' even means. I bet $20 that if you had everyone in this forum in a room and walked around with a clipboard asking people 'What is UID 0?' maybe 20-30% of people would know the answer. That means that up to 80% of them probably don't quite understand all of the things inside this can of worms they're trying to open.
My comments weren't intended to be presumptuous, or to look down on people, or to thumb my nose at them, etc. I'm only pointing out that for average (or probably even most) users, there aren't really any everyday reasons to go through this.... especially if you don't know what you're doing. All risk, no reward. And that's exactly why the developers of the method are advising these types of users to wait for something that's more suitable for mass consumption.
Ya I love my phone the way it is, all I wanted to do is wifi tether haha. I rooted just fine and im no expert at all. It took about 20 minutes.
Thank you! To the answer on how to quickly unroot. I appreciate it...

Is there a way to unroot without wiping the phone?
Since when did wiping the phone remove root?
If you RUU the phone to unroot it is wiped and will need to re-do all the settings. I dont want to have to do that.
Un-root And update download the file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=975888 and apply. This will give you stock and S-on.
That simple!
Thanks for the info, but the fun is just beginning. This is always good to have just in case you have to return it.
You should be able to load any stock RUU. As long as the hboot and the recovery exist in the RUU, it should return you to a stock condition.
Jaywan, how about a simple root and s-off?
It's simple to make a app run the commands needed to make a one click rooter. And easier to edit a already working rooter to work for this phone. Idk why he don't want the one click released. Took me 30 minutes to root.. maybe he only want people to root using his method. I not gonna step on his toes by posting one tho...

ok ok, I hear yah. I will just bite the bullet and type in all 90 of the commands tomorrow when I get off work.
BTW, I left the MT4G and came over to verizon also. I went to the SGS4G before I left tmobile. Lack of dev support for that phone made me give it up. Thanks for coming over to the Thunderbolt.
also, take a look at this thread I started. Somethings up with this one click unroot deal.

I heard him meantion he wants people to learn adb so if something happens further down the line they can use it
Seriously I'm with him, the hardest part about adb for me was getting it installed. The root was easy and took 30 min
sent from my Thunderbolt
For what its worth, he said feel free to post the one clicks, just give credit. I dont honestly care however, copy, paste, seemed simple enough. Was no where near as hard as the original root method for the DInc.

The only legitimate reason I could buy about not wanting a one click released, is if SOMEHOW it would make our phones vulnerable to some sort if attack.
As background, I've ben using custom roms since my old g1 was new and JesusFreke was just getting started and I dont ever recall ANY dev with holding something that would make the users lives easier. In recent history I've done a ton of flashing roms with both mine and my wifes old vibrants and the only time I used adb was if I wanted to push a file to the phone without mounting it on my computer.
PERSONALLY, this whole mess sounds of ego and elitism. I am incredibly greatful to the devs who have paved the way, but fearful of what they are trying to do. No one should have the right to prevent another from releasing something, it's in gross violation of the gpl. If a dev wants to code something under a different license, fine. However it needs to be clearly annotated as such, and devoid of any gpl work itself. In other words, it basically can't contain anything related to android unless it was developed 100% blind through an emulator.

Can't step on my toes, I got stealtoe boots...
I want a chance to review any one clicks before release. I REALLY want new users to understand what they are doing BEFORE they try one clicking.
I want proper md5sum verifications, I want proper warnings, etc.
I already stopped the release (until fixed) of one 1click root that would of been REALLY bad for the community and anyone using it.
Ppl need to stop blaming me for this crud.

Are you a troll or do you really believe all that crock you just posted?
The issue with one clicks was an increased risk of bricking with this method. And where does the GPL even come in here at, any GPL code we used as released before the root was even up.?
I stopped a one click from being released today that not only left your phone vulnerable to an attack, but also left you with an outdated, faulty radio and other faulty firmware.
Either you are a troll, have a personal issue with me, or have a seriously problem.

Dude it doesn't work that way on this phone. It is not the G1, z4/visionary/anyonphoneroot does not work, root REQUIRES adb (even with one click).
Fact is, you can't root this phone, temp or perm, one click or not, without ad.
If you can find a way, please do. We are awaiting your one click, root that does not use adb, and is not dangerous.
fyi one click has been released, hours before your post.
Code:
while (true) {
facepalm();
}
I'm going to cut out all your attacks, because you've clearly missed my point in its entirety and decided to get defensive.

I brought the GPL in because like it or not, you don't have the right to say who can and cannot release anything regarding "one click" roots UNLESS you yourself made an essential piece of the current rooting method, that is in its entirety your own. To make an analogy, you can't patent (and thus control the distribution) to a Toyota Carolla, simply because you assembled the whole thing from spare parts. If you were to completely design and fabricate a motor vehicle without using off-the-shelf parts you WOULD have that right.
There is nothing personal in my view of this against you, I don't hold any grudges against anyone; but its the mentality here that irritates me, and it just happens that you're the one that posted it:

I understand you want people to learn; I really do. I've done enough work with computers that I too get really irritated at people who demand answers to questions answered much faster by doing a quick search. I also understand why you want to avoid screw ups because of a poorly made one click. HOWEVER, just because you WANT people to get them cleared through you first; does not mean they HAVE to or that you have a right to demand that they do.

And thus you've found the wonder of open source software. Sometimes crap gets released. But guess what? Every one of us here are supposed to be adults, or at the very least the authorized users of our phones; which means that if we screw something up, or use something that screws up; its our own damn fault.
The whole purpose of OSS is to allow freedom of ideas and development. I don't know how old you are, or what your experience with OSS outside of Android phones are; but I personally have seen PLENTY of OSS software that started out as utter crap, turn into wonderful software packages. Maybe you're old enough to remember KDE2 vs KDE4, or how about pre v1 Mozilla vs modern versions of Firefox.
I'm not some OSS nutter; I've got no problem with closed source or proprietary software; just a problem with others trying to control things they have no right to.
All that having been said, maybe you DO hold software rights related to some piece of the current rooting method. If so I've seen nothing indicating so, nor anything indicating that any part of the rooting method is not OSS; however if you DO, then you have my apologies, as you would indeed have control over distribution of that specific piece. You still would not be able to prevent distribution of any one click that were released provided they simply had users download your piece separately.
You are missing the point, and obviously did not read anything. This will be my last time wasting time with you until then.
I never said THEY CANT release, I asked them not to, until we had a safer way and time to check it out. Big difference. I stopped one from going out today that would of more or less ruined phones until someone fixed them.
Fact is, MOST of the one clicks I have seen lately, violate the GPL, why don't you go after them, or hell even better we could really use you to go after HTC (in all seriousness).

I agree!! If anyone is in violation of GPL license it is HTC.
And once we have that kernel source in the hands of the community amazing things will happen!!
Once the custom kernels start flying you will see the TB doing crazy things. I can only imagine 2GHz speeds or insanely efficient battery life (to name a few)!

This has got to be the stupidest statement I have read in a long time, I can guarantee, If you used a 1-click method and it bricked your phone you would be screaming " where's the oversight in this forum, I cant' believe that that mods would allow faulty programming to be posted."

I'm not privy to any private conversations, nor do I read every thread here on XDA, so my general impression, which I'm sure is shared based upon what others have said, was of a more explicit "No you cannot," not a "do you mind if I take a peek first". Furthermore, I did not name any one individual "responsible" for any blockade; I only began to interact with you once you brought yourself into the thread. Beyond that, if you go back to my original post, I explicitly thank the people who made root possible at all.

I'm guessing you're referring to the fact that they didn't release the kernel source as expected this week? I'd mentioned it in another thread, though I don't recall which anymore; but from what I recall of GPLv2 developers have 60 days from the "official" binary release to provide source. To expand on that, HTC has 60 days from when the phone officially went on sale, to provide upon request the source code to any GPL licensed software, however it is version specific. That is to say 60 days from March 17th to make available the source to the firmware that was on the phone when released (since to the best of my knowledge there have been no other OFFICIAL firmware versions released).
Of course any such source will inherently exclude any third party proprietary software, for example if HTC used a closed-source bluetooth stack (not saying they did, just a hypothetical example). Additionally, there isn't any specific method to release stipulated. If HTC wishes they could mail out copies of the source on 3.5" floppies and still be within the rules; and all this assumes GPLv2 is how Android is licensed. If its v3 then I honestly have no clue if any time provisions exist.
I just want to reiterate, I have no ill-will to you nor anyone else. It appears as though the whole issue stems from miscommunication.

A tune up for a car worth thousands of dollars is very very clearly different then a piece of software for a phone.
maybe,,we all have different views,,in my case ill just glad that i can start 2 work on some themes and bootspashes and other bits and peaces,, the trouble is its the onlyway 2 gain tryed many other ways on the m8 ,,not possible at all..
It doesn't seem right to me that one spends hundreds and hundreds of hours learning to work with these phones by working and learning from others who are not charging for their help, and then when it's his turn to help and teach others, he decides he is going to charge for it. I know that jcase and others are good people doing good work and if I truly need something, I'll pay for it. I'm just having a little problem with this new concept. No $25 is a okay price, think of it. Developers have to risk bricking their devices to achieve s-off for a HTC community. And all devices are different to. Achieving s-off .. and who knows they could of bricked a few desire 816's in the process... pluses your paying them for their hard work. If you think you can do it then take a crack at it. Or just stay s-on.

It's not to say that for the work put into it doesn't justify the $25 price. But what it offers doesn't. Especially considering previous S-OFF methods, that all had the same risk to develop, have been free.
I have a couple of questions if someone could help....
1. Has anybody tried Sunshine 3 on Virgin Mobile Desire 816? Did it work?
2. With the impending update for Android 5.0, if I use this and update, will the update put me back to S-ON and kill my root?
3. If the update kills my root, is re-rooting the same process. Sorry a little new to android modding. Thanks in advance.

This took more effort and costs than previous tools. This tool supports way more devices/firmwares than past tools. Each new iteration of android is more secure, the R&D time and costs is thus increased. We do nothing to prevent you or anyone else from developing a similar tool, eating the costs of R&D and giving away for free. Alternatively, you can personally finance this operation, and we can re-release SunShine for free. Let me know if you are capable and willing to do that, as I'm willing to make arrangements and accept that.

I am donating my Sharp Aquos Crystal to ONLY THE BEST DEVELOPERS. Its beat up and its been abused but there is potential in the phone for root, ROM and Mods. I will pick the developer and i'm basically hoping to send it to the best only! Please message me and let me know if you have any interest in doing substantial research on this phone and taking its code apart. I already tried and it needs a 3rd party program to access the boot-loader portion of the file system and ill tell you which one an provide a dropbox link to the loader you can download to get into it. I could easily take it apart and find a back-door but i work too often and cannot find the time to tear it down properly and look for vulnerabilities for free; Thus i am donating this phone as i will be replacing it with one i never dropped on the floor ;p cosmetically challenged yes, functionally operational YES. comes with a charger, box and receipt? YES. I want this phone to be developed into the most reliable and functional phone possible and if i have to do all the work myself... well i wont. or at least i wont share my findings if i have to spend time away from my family which is why i am DONATING this phone. I am a programmer for a very nice search engine we all use and i have already found 2 back-doors into the phone which i will also send over via PM. the problem is i cannot access the loader or storage from a PC using the standard drivers, only from within the phone. I need your help! You get a free beat up phone, and the opportunity to play with it. It will come loaded with Boost Unlimited to test the MMS, 4G, Calls etc. but i will only pay for 1 month. you MUST figure it out within 1 month! I can only spend 2 hours on my saturdays playing with it and i went back to my rooted G3 because it beats the Aquos in every category except for sleek design. however, i think this phone can be a powerhouse for entry level users and with its power i know it can be everyone's favorite device. I want ROMS. I want unattended root and i want this thing to be the leader in aftermarket mods. Can we make it happen? idk we will have to see. The CM team shot it down instantly and said SHARP will not release the loader in the US but i dont work for SHARP, so here in beautiful southern california i am safe playing with the software and you will be ok because no laws restrict us to OpenWare software like the rest of the messed up planet. I have permission from google to modify the software strictly for research so we are clear.
Message me and lets get this show on the road.

I already shipped the phone out to Palo Alto, CA. I have purchased another 306SH and I am waiting to hear back from the developer, a friend of mine from college. Hopefully by the end of the month we will have unattended root with a rom compatibility list. He has all the time we need to test and program the phone. I couldn't get past ROM upload without bricking the thing so maybe he will discover a better method. Like I said in my original post I only have a few hours a week to play with the code and its not enough time to test any configuration changes without losing my daily driver. (since my company blackberry doesnt make calls outside of company contacts list, I needed my personal phone still, but already replaced it.)
As far as the loader goes, i found a way in using ODIN4 but the newest update locked out the back door so once again i was stuck; my buddy is going to have to find another way into the folder. I will keep everyone posted on the results as i will be testing the first round next weekend. I'm currently playing in Kitchen with CM12 and testing the drivers in my box so worst case scenario i will find the right ROM config and stabilize it so we have at least 1 modifiable ROM to mess around with. I will release download links this coming weekend for the Alpha Release CM12 ROM and with any luck, we will have unattended root as well. I see great things coming soon for this device.
I am also working on a nice little camera mod that we will all use daily from an unreleased packet @ work and cooking it up for the Aquos so stay tuned! it should apk install on factory firmware which is what i will be testing after thursday evening.
Standby team Actual, We will have results soon Hooah!

Successful root was achieved before i shipped it out using company software however i cannot release corporate software to the public since i have no way to remove it from the building (and i value my career.) but soon enough, i will provide source and links to the backdoor once we find the next one in the update. I just wish Sharp wasn't so dang grumpy about releasing their crap OS to developers. If they did, i'm sure most of the android community would be picking these 306's up off the shelves at an alarming rate. Oh well, sucks to be Sharp USA. When they want to collaborate to ID security risks, I will give them the exact same answer they gave me- "Nope i dont care who you are, you are not getting our OS pack or loader software."
hahaha we will see about that ;p

Nope, in fact the opposite. My friend couldn't get into the phone so I drove up to Palo Alto to help him out friday night over the past weekend and it was a train wreck. We salvaged the OP and called it quits first thing yesterday morning. He showed me his progress which was about as far as i got as well. So we threw the broken Aquos at a wall and I sold the nice new black one I purchased, to some guy off CraigsList for $30. Sorry guys but it needs too much work and without Sharp (Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha) providing any information as to what driver/ loader sequence it is we need to tap into the chip via 3rd party, Its a lost cause. (my work console gets into it in under 30 seconds, tho it's very illegal and cannot be replicated without losing my career.) We tried everything for 20 hours straight the first day and 12 hours the 2nd when I finally stood up and tossed the phone down something like 4 flights of stairs and off the balcony. surprisingly enough, it didn't break easily.
I don't have time to tear down the code in terminal and cook the exploit since my job is 50 hours a week already. Any more wasted time on this project and I'll lose my car, job and likely my wife.
I recommend selling the crap Aquos and getting the S6 Edge, which I just picked up today. I already have root access using ODIN and a modified exploit i found on a chinese website and i'm working on a ROM for it as we speak.
Its just a damn shame that Sharp doesn't want their products to take off here in the States, seeing how well the Aquos performs. I explained it to them and they just said "nope! we will press charges if you pursue any further modification."
So Thats the end of that. sorry guys i really tried and my buddy worked for an entire week and only got to where i was after the first 48 hours. I see the exploit looking through the logs, but i was told federal charges will be filed if i release the exploit to the public in the form of auto-run APK which i also could not get running properly. It all comes down to the platform.
They didnt say anything about publiclysharing the code tho. I am having my wife look over the documents for legality issues and if she cant find anything stating raw-code release is applicable, i will release my logs from work and all the project work we have so far. its about 11gbs of logs and code and a few extra gigs of failed modified programs we wrote. Like i said, we tried it all
Perhaps one of you more fine tuned developers can work through my data and see what sort of application will backdoor into the system. As it stands today though, The latest firmware release is tighter than a tick's a$$ and downgrading is about as hard as getting weed legal in federal court.
As my buddy Rob says: "Basically, I can get into iOS' Pants in 12 minutes, but Sharp's Loader is wearing an electrified chastity belt and that b17CH swallowed the keys. We either wait for the next release and modify the stock update so it thinks it's a normal update, or wait for the company to get hammered and drop the pants to let us play."
I have absolute 0 hope for this device.
The Aquos is toasted as far as the modification community should be concerned.
Galaxy S6 Edge tho... This thing is a beast. Ill be releasing my findings tonight or tomorrow once i finalize this ROM modification (cooking up some extra settings, modifying prop and removing bloat + some LED and screen mods.)
I also pre-ordered the new Blackberry Venice that "supposedly runs android" through my companies pre-order form, so in the next couple months hopefully ill get my hands on that unit. BB's have been running Android/ linux based software for quite a while now (since 10.1) but it is emulated and not native. Hopefully, the "venice" developed by Samsung will yield some surprising performance and efficiency results that we all want and need.
Standby Team, I'm working as fast as i can, Hooah!

thanks for information and for your work .. what happen with tools and code that you have can you share it?
ok guys im sorry i have been AWOL this week we started a new project and i just dove into it so we havn't had time to re-work the code. My wife says there is a clause in the paperwork Sharp sent me stating i cannot release any portion of their software whether modified or not. so basically all i can release is the collaborative work i've done with Rob which isnt much because its mostly factory firmware modifications and common knowledge. needless to say, There is a reason we salvaged the OP.
I know alot of you have sent PM asking for clues and access to my software. I have tried to reply to all of you but you need to change your security settings here on XDA because even though you can send me a message, i cannot reply.
I will be sending out the first batch of ADB run-around to PM's that actually go through. The only loophole we can find is private collab which is legal in the US so once i get the first round out, i will email from my personal account the rest of the changes we had made.
*Note* Google is offering $40k USD for the exploits in the new software so you can understand my hesitance to release any loaders that can potentially tap into most phones' firmware systems. That's like handing over 40k for free. Ill tune up and debug the programs rob and i built and send them out but they do not work for the 306. And since i dont have the 306 anymore, i cannot test any more modifications.
Fastboot isn't the way into the 306. you need to get your hands on the initial (Extremely buggy) release, modify the prop and boot directory, and then let the phone update to the new software with the new settings. It will blackout and sit on the Aquos emblem for like 30 minutes, but once recovered the root stays. thats the only way we got it to even try to respond but still no SU access and /detect-root shows no success however there is now root folder access. Then using ADB push the old OS back onto it and it will keep modified folder access for root but will not boot completely at this point. that's as far as we got and couldn't move past it. I asked a coworker last week about it and he gave me some new ideas, however i dont have the phone anymore and i don't plan on purchasing another one since i have moved onto the S6 Edge and another project from work.
Im sorry guys but i'm out of time on the 306. I tried for more than 2 months and its a no-go. I have heard of people gaining root and removing GSM lock, but they have way too much time invested and completely re-wrote the directories by hand.
If you are still dead set on the 306SH, Download the newest firmware, http://www.sharpusa.com/Support/ProductDetail.aspx?modelid=9FCA5482-7A08-1BF8-7AA9-F29AF5CB9A19 and unpack it. connect to ADB and \fastboot-dirw acc1. then # mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19/system, # exit.
Here is the problem. Permissions are set by something else in the ROM and when you attempt to push anything other than a verified update, it crashes. Not sure why. 18 hours on that subject alone -_-
When looking through the Unpacked ROM, It's like line 42-45 and you can see the malicious lockout, that when deleted bricks the phone. I played with the rom and couldn't figure out why every damn program uses the same sequence and references the same directory before it even begins to process. its a classic lock-out. Loader software barely bypasses it but you need to find the drain in the phone. There is an application somewhere that constantly reference checks the line 42 and if its not present, the phone shuts down and bootloader locks up.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade. Its an outstanding phone, but its not worth the headache.
This thread will be deleted in about a month so PM me and make sure you can receive a response.
OP 306SH-Decomissioned permanently unless i get another one. sorry guys. And i go back to school monday for summer classes so i wont be working on anything except work projects for the next 8 weeks. But I will be back with some excellent news for the S6 Edge by sunday night. I have root and I'm on day 5 of my custom ROM and this thing is Fast! like whoa thats a powerPC fast. I recommend the Edge to anyone struggling with the 306. Samsung really stepped it up.

You'd really pay 40 bucks instead of following these three simple steps? Allow me to find that absurd. Besides, these "one click root" methods are not at all hassle free and far from safe. Have you watched the 2.5 minute YT video on "how to easily root any android device" for the solution you mentioned? I counted about 15 taps on the phone and 30 clicks on the PC. Plus the fact that you're risking malware injection with such methods. In the time you're asking about this method you could've already rooted it yourself. It's your money though, waste it as you like.
PS. You may also want to read the top rated comment on that video. I've taken the liberty to quote it here for you:
STAY FAR AWAY!!! This is your one and only warning. They charge you to steal your phone data and destroy your phone. Take it from me. I tried it and it costed me a ton of money to replace my phone, data and dignity. They will use your data to steal your identity and credit cards information. It happened to me. Heed the warning and STAY FAR AWAY.

Your making this harder than it needs to be, just go to the guide ,news and discussion section the a really nice guide there (it's like the 2nd or 3rd pinned post) that will walk you through it...
That's a 9+ minute video! It's really simple: unlock bootloader (will wipe all data!), flash TWRP, flash Magisk in TWRP. Rooted! Three simple steps, as I noted before. Stay away from tools and scripts, they're nothing but trouble. Believe me, I know. I hard bricked an OPO once using one of those tools. Two major advantages of typing/pasting the commands yourself: you hold control over every step and you learn something in the process. It's safer and educational.
Don't use the 15 second ADB installer, it's outdated. Get the right tools here: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
