Battery issue

I am using DCD's newest kitchen and when I have my phone plugged in it will show its 100% charged (green LED and all).. Just as soon as I pull it off the charger it will instantly drop down to 99% then 97% then usually end up at around 95% charged within just a few minutes.. It then kinda evens out and I seem to have fairly normal battery life after that. When I put it back on a charger it will go back to charging the battery back up.
Any idea what would cause this?? Is that really just dead area on my battery that dissipates that quick?
I am on Verizon, using dcds newest kitchen, have a suite of SPB products and s2u2 on the phone...

This sounds about normal. Especially if you are using the battery meter that changes with increments of 1% rather then 10% like the original battery meter was.
SPB products and s2u2 do use alot of battery power, but this is normal.

yep the 1% meter is built into DCDs rom is my understading..
I could understand (not happily) those products using alot of battery power.. its the INSTANT drop in battery life and the evening out that has me puzzled. I just tested it again and its from 100% to 95% in about a minute. Also when I plugged it back onto the charger it almost instantly pops back up to 100%.. (sometimes within a couple mins)
If that top 5% of power is not usable how can I reset whatever so that it does not even count that portion..
Or is it more of a actual battery issue and I need to get a new battery?

it has nothing to do with battery usage. the moguls are just very inaccurate with their battery meter...htc did not do a good job with this. thats kind of the reason it defaults to 10% increments to begin with.

Proper way of calibrating battery?

Hi folks, I'm running CM6 8/26 nightly with Snap v7.4 kernel with SetCPU set to conservative on 998mhz max and 245mhz min. I'm getting horrid battery life and I think I'm doing something wrong: I wiped battery stats in Clockwork and now my battery SUCKS. -.-
Question is, what its the proper way of calibrating an Evo battery? I've seen the official HTC response but I don't think it's going to make a difference. Isn't there another method that requires you to drain the battery? Any info will be appreciated I've been looking at forums all day.

You can't just wipe battery stats - there's a process to go through. What you're referring to is Cyanogen's battery recalibration method found here. Read through fully before wiping anything.

Actually it is almost as simple as wiping battery stats. That command he gives is what the wipe battery stats command in the recoveries do.
1. Charge battery to full (where it's actually 100% not green light.
2. Boot into recovery wipe battery stats.
3. Fully boot into os then unplug charger.
4. Leave unplugged until the phone shuts itself off.
At that point you should be calibrated.

On a related topic, the Battery Graph app available in the market also has an option to wipe battery stats from within the OS, doesn't it? Might save having to reboot into recovery once you're charged up.

It's a lithium battery. You can't condition it. Just use it as normal and ignore all these placebo effect steps.

This is all about calibrating the software (battery stats).

They're not calibrating the battery. they're calibrating the phone to know when the battery is really fully charged which, until you do this, is not the case when the charge light turns green.

Regardless, none of this worked. I've quit all services, no sync, auto brightness and wifi and I'm still getting horrible battery life. SetCPU is set to conservative. It's BULL**** my display is on for thirty minutes and the battery dies 20%. I played a game on my friend's iPhone 4 for twenty minutes and his battery barely died 3%. This is really unacceptable and I'm probably going to return my Evo or sell it if the battery life doesn't get better soon from these methods I'm seeing online

Crazy man, maybe something happened cause that is pretty bad.
Have a backup to go back to, prior to this happening, to see if it reverts back to normal?

Naw nothing happened to my phone...... All of us Evo owners should be able to use this beautiful phone with all of the features at max without the battery going to ****. My phone has behaved this way since unboxing. I'm not a big fan of the iPhone 4 but I will give it props on battery life. I have yet to try the longer HTC method but it seems kind of pointless.....

If it has always been like that then you may have a bad battery, if it started after you wiped the battery data then it is just showing you bad readings.
You should be able to get a good calibration if you reset your battery data again, maybe try through your recovery if possible, and then fully charge it with your phone turned off. Once it is charged you can either use it normally till it dies or you can tether, use gps, watch youtube, etc, and drain the battery down. Just make sure you go from a full charge to the phone shutting itself off without plugging it in to anything. Do that charging with it off and using it till it dies two or three times and your battery stats will be calibrated.
When I did this to mine it showed my battery at 0% for at least half an hour before it finally died, and that was with me listening to pandora and browsing the web.
Edit: FYI, the Evo's talk time is usually between 6.5 to 7.5 hrs, the iPhone 4 is around 7 hours also. If your battery is not lasting that long you need to take it in to sprint and have them give you a new battery.

HTC's method worked wonders for me. i'm a heavy heavy HEAVY user (no, not fat) and I get a good 10 hours with everything besides 4g on plus surfing, gaming and tethering for SEVERAL hours. For all that I do on my EVO 10 hours is HUGE. If I have a moderate day of usage (maybe a little more than moderate for the average user) I get around 19 hours.

Btw none of this will help if you are getting near 100% awake time. If that's the case you need to find the software causing that first.

Try this, it helped me. I did not come up with this btw.
With phone on, charge until green.
Unplug and turn phone completely off.
Charge phone until green once again.
Unplugand turn on. Once phone had turned completely on turn the phone back off again.
Charge until green one more time then unplug and turn on and you're done!

Battery Charging

I noticed something recently. My epic used to SUCK with battery life and took really long to charge. I've flashed a few roms over with ext4 etc, but I am now on stock dk28, (rooted+cwm2.5). Now what I noticed is that my battery charges really fast now even with wifi. BUT i m kinda thinking that maybe the battery statistics are not right? The batery seems to stay charged for a good time now too. Now, I am wondering why this could be. Three things I'm thinking:
1. I remember switching batteries with a vibrant before but I thought I switched them back. I don't know maybe I didn't now that I think about it?
2.flashing roms at random times/ when the battery was low. BUT I did odin back to stock 2.1 after all this..
3.Battery conditioning?

when u flash to a new rom that significantly different than the previous rom you had you need to get your phone fully charged, power off and wait for it to complete charging again then boot into clockwork,unplug,wipe batt stats, boot and dont plug in untill the batt dies and phone powers off. This will let android gauge your batt....i've notice that flashing a new rom with a low charge seems to really throw off the bat stats

That's not entirely accurate. Android gauges it on a full battery CYCLE. you don't have to go from full to dead. You should always start full though. You can run from full, to 50%, plug it in, back down to 50%. That would complete one full cycle. Theres a thread with all the info on it. I'd link it but I'm on my phone.

Gauges a full cycle, beeing the FULL cycle of the battery... i.e fully charged to fully drained... then it knows the capacity

That is all completely unnecessary. Just charge it to full, power off, boot into clockwork, wipe battery stats, restart. No other steps are required to calibrate your battery.

Or just simply use the phone normally and it will balance itself out naturally in a couple days. Charging is always quick for me "if" I'm not doing data and resource heavy tasks.

I do bump charging or quick charging or whatever its called.
The hero would charge to like 35% in 10minutes. The epic only charges to like 5% in 10minutes lol
I hate the epic battery. But when its fully charged, it lasts the day for me.

My epic battery used to be terrible, 4hours. But with little no changes im getting at least 12 hours or moderate use wifi, GPS, auto bright, and 3 or 4 widgets. i can only think that the battery has been conditioned.
Also i flashed the EB13 from here this morning with setCPU and i'm getting at least 4 more hours. Also charging is faster 30% in 60 minutes.

Battery life been sucking...

I don't know if it's my imagination, but since the 2.4.6 update, my battery life has dropped a bit. By the time I get into my office from my morning commute, I'm anywhere in the 65-70% battery life after unplugging from a full charge. I haven't done anything new. I always unplug around 8:30 am when I head out, I do some light chatting with gf, browse some sites, check facebook (usually very briefly), and maybe sometimes do a little reading on my device. By the time I get into the office around 9:30 or 10 AM, I'm usually around the 80-85% area with battery.
Lately, doing the same thing, I'm seeing the aforementioned 65-70%.
Is anyone else experiencing decreased battery life since 2.3.6?
I'm on a Tmobile Nexus S, running stock 2.3.6 (no custom ROMs).

2.4.6 ? .... maybe 2.3.6 ... and yes, I also noticed a slight increase in power consuption after the upgrade. The stand-by is still great .. about 0.8 - 1% per hour.

I used to get home with about 40-50% after a whole "normal day" (unplugged at 8AM, and getting back home at ~8PM) .. now (with the same average usage) I'm getting home with ~30-40% ... that why I said "slight increase" ...

Not your imagination, I too have noticed this. I hope the next update, will fix this - as I used to get pretty good battery life (even with over 250 apps).
When I recently updated to the 2.3.6, it caused a bug of continuous reboot (every 1-3 minutes), so I had to do a hard reset - now it works fine, but I only have added back about 15 apps - and the battery life sux!

Downgrade OS' it will be ok.

This is so weird. Why is the battery life worse?

You want bad battery life? Try an Evo 4g with a Sense rom. I averaged about 6hrs using a 1500mAh battery, in stock form.
The nexus is pretty light on power consumption, if you ask me. I average 15hrs on the stock 2.3.7 rom/kernel combo, with stock battery.

I'm on 2.3.6 and need to charge every two days. I text a lot and do light gaming. I'm typing this from my phone. Maybe you could drain the battery and wipe battery stats? I'm not even at 50% yet and I charged yesterday.

i noticed a decent increase in battery life going to 2.3.7 and thought that previously the battery life had been fairly poor :\

I am non rooted, and get around 20 hrs on light to moderate use. Again. Stock, non rooted.

Whenever switching roms, kernels, or batteries, i always perform the following :
1. Charge to a true 100% (Battery Monitor Widget will register +0 to +2 mA)
2. Wipe battery stats using recovery (Amon RA has this option for the Evo, not sure about cwm), Battery Monitor Widget, or a dedicated app.
3. Discharge battery to 0% with normal usage. When the phone shuts down, I pull and re-install the battery and power back up (it will shutdown again very quickly).
4. Recharge battery and be on my merry way.

Problem solved. Using the OS Monitor app, I found that the main culprit was Google Services - the Contacts sync specifically. Even though I had this disabled (only Gmail was being allowed to sync) it was constantly working, apparently trying to fix a location. The message log showed that it was generating continuous debug messages, all about locations - around 10 of these every second.
I have solved the problem by disabling 'Use wireless networks' under the Locations & Security settings.'Use GPS satellites' is still running. This immediately dropped my CPU usage - which had been running around 30 to 40% even when otherwise idle, to around 10%. Google contacts sync is now using 0% of the CPU. The difference in battery life was pretty much immediate and is now back to what it was before - the change in the slope on the battery usage graph is remarkable!
This doesn't really seem like a solution to me, and I don't know whether other aspects of my functionality are being affected, but at least my phone is properly useable again.
I'm testing for 1 day and I think that's working for me.

One reason is that the new version of the stock kernel removed a speed stepping, so it'll power to higher levels faster, thus using more battery.

That actually isn't the problem. I'm using netarchy's kernel and still get this problem.
My battery life dropped from 16 hours --> 6 hours. the slope on my battery usage life is horrible the system is also awake almost constantly even when I'm not touching it / getting no messages.
I will try the fix suggested on the google support forum and see if that does the trick. sloppy update.

I have CM7.1 on my MT4G. Over the past week or so, my battery has been dying after 2-3 minutes of use. I'll get a full charge, take it off the charger, use any app(Angry Birds, Gtalk, text messaging...) and the phone will shut itself off after just a couple minutes of use. When I turn it back on, it says 2%-3%. It then shuts itself off again, I plug it in and turn it on...says anything from 3% to 90%.
I've always ran the battery down and charged to full. Is my battery kaput? Is there a way to fix this?

Most likely.. take out the battery and inspect for leaks(might be very small discharge you might not see it clearly leak can and will damage your phone)..let it die completely, and let it stay off, charge it till the green light comes on, reboot into recovery, clear battery stats, reboot and see how long it last, also change your brightness, and other settings that might be consuming battery use..if none of these helps.. just buy another battery.

Sounds like your battery is screwed. Just buy a oem battery or get a mugen power 1650mAh

My issues aren't quite that bad, but after I upgraded to CM7.1 from 7.0, by battery has been terrible. 15-20m of phone calls over BT takes ~20% of the battery. 15m on Angry Birds chewed up ~40% of the battery. I downloaded the latest nightly (252) and will see what happens.

Try a dif battery and see if it does the same thing. So you can rule things out

I guess I'm not having the problem you guys are having with battery drain. Granted I didnt use my phone that heavily, but still sitting at 60% after 10 hours. But if your battery is dead after 3 minutes something is seriously wrong, I agree and try a new battery.

You need to calibrate the battery after changing ROM's. Download a battery calibrator from the market. (Don't pay for one. There are like 10 free ones)
Charge the phone fully overnight. Calibrate it in the morning.
Give it a few days to gather new battery data, and then enjoy getting a full day's use from the phone.

Update
So, it's gonna have to be the battery. Recalibrated, no good. Tried a few different ROMs from CM7 nightlies to MIUI, no good.
Waiting for the new battery to get here to be sure.

hello there, i got 2 mytouch 4g both running the same rom (virtuous unity 2.39) one of them has eaten 2 batteries that i bought thinking that the batteries were somehow broken or damaged... i came across this thread, read the reply recomending battery calibrator when i reached for my phone (that i left sitting on my drawer waiting for a new batt AGAIN) to give it a try and to my surprise it was still on and i has been on for 2 days 11hours and the fricking battery was at 97% before that it started to turn off-discharge so i put the thing on airplane mode and there it was till now... dunno why or what but i think it has something to do with the radio/network... hope we find a cure for this

I've been having this same issue, and I was wondering if replacing the battery fixed the issue? Thanks.
