Hi folks, I'm running CM6 8/26 nightly with Snap v7.4 kernel with SetCPU set to conservative on 998mhz max and 245mhz min. I'm getting horrid battery life and I think I'm doing something wrong: I wiped battery stats in Clockwork and now my battery SUCKS. -.-
Question is, what its the proper way of calibrating an Evo battery? I've seen the official HTC response but I don't think it's going to make a difference. Isn't there another method that requires you to drain the battery? Any info will be appreciated I've been looking at forums all day.

You can't just wipe battery stats - there's a process to go through. What you're referring to is Cyanogen's battery recalibration method found here. Read through fully before wiping anything.
Thank u very much, I wiped the stats by mistake

Actually it is almost as simple as wiping battery stats. That command he gives is what the wipe battery stats command in the recoveries do.
1. Charge battery to full (where it's actually 100% not green light.
2. Boot into recovery wipe battery stats.
3. Fully boot into os then unplug charger.
4. Leave unplugged until the phone shuts itself off.
At that point you should be calibrated.
On a related topic, the Battery Graph app available in the market also has an option to wipe battery stats from within the OS, doesn't it? Might save having to reboot into recovery once you're charged up.
It's a lithium battery. You can't condition it. Just use it as normal and ignore all these placebo effect steps.

They're not calibrating the battery. they're calibrating the phone to know when the battery is really fully charged which, until you do this, is not the case when the charge light turns green.
Regardless, none of this worked. I've quit all services, no sync, auto brightness and wifi and I'm still getting horrible battery life. SetCPU is set to conservative. It's BULL**** my display is on for thirty minutes and the battery dies 20%. I played a game on my friend's iPhone 4 for twenty minutes and his battery barely died 3%. This is really unacceptable and I'm probably going to return my Evo or sell it if the battery life doesn't get better soon from these methods I'm seeing online

Crazy man, maybe something happened cause that is pretty bad.
Have a backup to go back to, prior to this happening, to see if it reverts back to normal?
Naw nothing happened to my phone...... All of us Evo owners should be able to use this beautiful phone with all of the features at max without the battery going to ****. My phone has behaved this way since unboxing. I'm not a big fan of the iPhone 4 but I will give it props on battery life. I have yet to try the longer HTC method but it seems kind of pointless.....
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If it has always been like that then you may have a bad battery, if it started after you wiped the battery data then it is just showing you bad readings.
You should be able to get a good calibration if you reset your battery data again, maybe try through your recovery if possible, and then fully charge it with your phone turned off. Once it is charged you can either use it normally till it dies or you can tether, use gps, watch youtube, etc, and drain the battery down. Just make sure you go from a full charge to the phone shutting itself off without plugging it in to anything. Do that charging with it off and using it till it dies two or three times and your battery stats will be calibrated.
When I did this to mine it showed my battery at 0% for at least half an hour before it finally died, and that was with me listening to pandora and browsing the web.
Edit: FYI, the Evo's talk time is usually between 6.5 to 7.5 hrs, the iPhone 4 is around 7 hours also. If your battery is not lasting that long you need to take it in to sprint and have them give you a new battery.

HTC's method worked wonders for me. i'm a heavy heavy HEAVY user (no, not fat) and I get a good 10 hours with everything besides 4g on plus surfing, gaming and tethering for SEVERAL hours. For all that I do on my EVO 10 hours is HUGE. If I have a moderate day of usage (maybe a little more than moderate for the average user) I get around 19 hours.
Btw none of this will help if you are getting near 100% awake time. If that's the case you need to find the software causing that first.

Try this, it helped me. I did not come up with this btw.
With phone on, charge until green.
Unplug and turn phone completely off.
Charge phone until green once again.
Unplugand turn on. Once phone had turned completely on turn the phone back off again.
Charge until green one more time then unplug and turn on and you're done!

After much googling this is the way that seems to be best when recalibrating battery. I just see so many people with poor battery life and it's likely because you've flashed new kernels and roms 50 times a week =p
Minor update! I recalibrate my phone today and realized something, this is reflected in a few new steps.
Step 1: Charge phone to 100%
Step 2: Wipe battery stats and shut phone off.
Step 3: UNPLUG PHONE and power on
Step 4: Leave phone on until it it shuts itself off. Do not plug it in.
Step 5: Turn phone back on, still unplugged. If it can't turn on that's fine. If it can turn on let it fully drain again.
Step 6: LEAVE PHONE OFF. Plug the phone in and let it FULLY charge without interruption. I let my phone hit the green light and then wait an hour before step 7. Some people suggest waiting 3 hours, some people suggest longer.
Step 7: After it's hit green and you've waiting a while unplug your phone. Do not turn it on. Wait a minute and then plug it back in. If the light stays amber for more than a few seconds (like 10 tops) leave it charging again until it's green.
Step 8: Repeat step 7 until the light turns green very soon after you plug it back in.
Step 9: Unplug and turn your phone on. Enjoy your (hopefully) extended battery.
I also suggest using "Juiceplotter" widget. It "records" your phones battery usage and uses it to predict future battery life. It won't work perfectly for the first day or so but after it gets used to your habits it's very good at predicting.
EDIT: NOW AN APP

I haven't tried that out. Going to try to and I'll post results.
Thanks dude, I guess this will work with calibrating a new battery too? Just got the 3500 battery and was wondering exactly how to calibrate it for the first time...
Yes and I suggest recalibrating if you
a) Have a new battery of any kind
b) Have a new eris but the same battery
c) Flash a new kernel
d) Have been flashing many new roms
I find it' s a good habit to only flash roms when you're battery is at 100% to prevent your phone from getting too confused.
I read that after 5-6 full discharges of the Seidio 3500 battery that your battery life will improve... But I also heard that full discharging and then charging isn't as great for your battery... so what should I exactly do? I've already discharged and fully charged it once.
HM, you should also start a thread about "Tweaks I've found useful, and how to do them" and share your findings with everyone. I think that would be very helpful to noobs and the less-than-technical types that would like to get more out of their Eris'.
I know that's alot of work, but I'm sure lots of people would help answer questions when you're not available.
And you can add stuff as you go, wip type page Just a thought, cheers!
I'll consider that, I just feel like I don't have all that much to contribute that others haven't already lol but we'll see.

Your eris's battery will never discharge completely, it turns itself off WELL before that point. You don't have to worry about hurting your battery in this day and age, maybe 10 years ago.
If you've discharged and fully charged once it might be recalibrated. Are you still having battery problems?

No, I hear ya, but to have most of the good tweaks in one thread would a helpful thing here.
I'll edit the first post in a few minutes, having internet troubles.
Eh on second though the only things I really have are the smoothness, another 3 build.prop things (only two of which are really tested) and the battery recalibration. I'll leave it as is =p

This is one way to calibrate it but if you've been flashing roms/kernels just going to "100%" isn't enough because your phone doesn't know what 100% is. I'm sure that way works well when there isn't a huge problem but for some people their batteries are way out of whack.
How about having 2 battery?
Right now i have 2 battery and switch one of them when other runout of power.
Should i calibrate both of them?
Is my way to switch battery is wise?
Thx

Don't switch between a 30% battery and a 100% battery, try to keep them around the same percentage. I can't say for sure because I don't know how the phone deals with that..
I tried this method yesterday (charged to 100%) , then last night and this morning drained the battery till dead and then charged to 1 hour after LED turned green. After I re-started my phone I was getting 1 % battery drop almost every 30 seconds, or every time I touched the phone it would drop a percentage point. :yikes:
So, I incorporated the "other" method mentioned here and turned my phone off (at 90%), plugged the charger back in and let it charge about 30 minutes after the LED turned green. I then booted the phone into recovery (while still plugged into the charger) and wiped battery stats, rebooted, and then unplugged the charger.
After this, I left it on for about 10 minutes with 3G and Sync active and only got 1% drop.
Kinda thinking this may be the ticket, for my phone at least.
Thanks for posting this up, I'll keep an eye on things and see if I can notice a difference. I was getting pretty decent battery life prior to this, but I agree that things need to be cleaned out sometimes after all these flashes.
I'm going to wipe GPS this afternoon and re-set it. Too much fun!
Yeah I did this method, wiped stats at 100% let die completely, charged all night turned it on and only had ninety percent and falling without using it.

Yes, my battery life is pretty ridiculous. I haven't dropped down to 50% since I did this.
I've gotten to 66% while on a lengthy phone conversation with my Gameboy emulator in the background, and then some gameboy (fully overclocked) for another hour at least.
I suggest using "JuicePlotter" widget for monitoring battery. After a few days it becomes very accurate.
I'll check out juice.
No setcpu. Just stock 710Mhz. Conap's CFS kernel is light on the battery.
Also, I play around with the auto bright settings to use the minimal needed for various lighting environments.

I see a lot of people not using SetCPU anymore. I like using it to underclock while the phone is not being used. If the kernel is 710Mhz stock now, would I just set SetCPU to 528Mhz for normal use or would that override the kernel?
Sorry to start another thread on battery issues but I was unable to find a scenario like mine.
Hey everybody, Im new to the android scene, just got my vibrant less than a month ago. Before that I had an Iphone 3g. So far I like the phone but the battery life is horrible. When I surf the internet on wifi or 3g I noticed that I use like 3-5% in a matter of 5 mins. Is this normal? I consider myself to be a light-moderate user and have been getting and average of 12 hours or so on my vibrant. Also if it makes any difference when my phone is idle or being used my temperature runs around the high 80's low 90's but when being charged it drops to the low 80's or high 70's. What is going on? How can I get more 20 hours on my phone? With the iphone I used to get an easy 15 hours and still have like 40-50% remaining.

When I first got the vibrant, it had pretty bad battery life, I would lose like 25% while sleeping 8-10 hrs. So light usage would be like a day. Slowly I started to get longer battery life (2 days on light usage). Recently I could get up to like 3.5 days on real light usage. After updating to JI6, max I can get now is like 3 days. I didn't really do much and I tripled my battery life by just giving it time.
Thanks burntrat I guess ill be patient. And I must mention that I am running stock.i was just worried because my battery temperature gets colder when charging and warmer when idle or running.

Try this. Download the system panel app from the market. You can set it to monitor your system and it will chart what applications are running and how much they are using the cpu. If you find you have some unnecessary bloatware running in the background download titanium backup and freeze those apps.

There are a lot of different ways mentioned in different forums. Try this:
Let your battery drain all the way to the point when it turns off by itself.
Charge it while its off until its full.
Unplug it, turn the phone on, then plug it in again.
After it reaches 100, unplug the charger and turn your phone off.
Once off, plug it in and let the charging complete.
Once complete, unplug it and turn the phone on. When everything has loaded, turn the phone off (note: no charging involved in this step.)
After it turns off, charge it one last time until 100%. After this, go into recovery and clear battery info (or cache, I forget). There you go
Oh, and its better if you don't download too many apps that monitor battery usage, cpu etc. cuz they will contribute to the battery consumption.

It isn't a good idea to let your battery drain all the way to zero since it is lithium ion. I think skipping that part and just charging it when it's on to full, then off to full, then on to full, then off to full and then wiping battery stats would suffice. Also you need to have clockwork recovery to wipe battery stats.

Agreed. In my case, I barely lasted 12 hours on moderate use with any of the JI6 2.1 ROMS (Eugene's, Bionix, Fusion, etc). I think after I updated to 2.2, all of the ROMS have been giving me 18+ hours on moderate-heavy use no matter what modem or kernel I use.
So where is the "unique" problem?

I noticed something recently. My epic used to SUCK with battery life and took really long to charge. I've flashed a few roms over with ext4 etc, but I am now on stock dk28, (rooted+cwm2.5). Now what I noticed is that my battery charges really fast now even with wifi. BUT i m kinda thinking that maybe the battery statistics are not right? The batery seems to stay charged for a good time now too. Now, I am wondering why this could be. Three things I'm thinking:
1. I remember switching batteries with a vibrant before but I thought I switched them back. I don't know maybe I didn't now that I think about it?
2.flashing roms at random times/ when the battery was low. BUT I did odin back to stock 2.1 after all this..
3.Battery conditioning?
Thanks guys for any feedback.

when u flash to a new rom that significantly different than the previous rom you had you need to get your phone fully charged, power off and wait for it to complete charging again then boot into clockwork, unplug, wipe batt stats, boot and dont plug in untill the batt dies and phone powers off. This will let android gauge your batt....i've notice that flashing a new rom with a low charge seems to really throw off the bat stats

That's not entirely accurate. Android gauges it on a full battery CYCLE. you don't have to go from full to dead. You should always start full though. You can run from full, to 50%, plug it in, back down to 50%. That would complete one full cycle. Theres a thread with all the info on it. I'd link it but I'm on my phone.

Gauges a full cycle, beeing the FULL cycle of the battery... i.e fully charged to fully drained... then it knows the capacity
That is all completely unnecessary. Just charge it to full, power off, boot into clockwork, wipe battery stats, restart. No other steps are required to calibrate your battery.
Or just simply use the phone normally and it will balance itself out naturally in a couple days. Charging is always quick for me "if" I'm not doing data and resource heavy tasks.

Also i flashed the EB13 from here this morning with setCPU and i'm getting at least 4 more hours. Also charging is faster 30% in 60 minutes.
... and from what I'm reading, trigger gives great battery life. So how do I see what has been eating my battery life up? For instance, I unplugged 40 minutes ago and I am down to 91% already.
The regular option on the phone doesn't do a great job of troubleshooting this issue and just says "Display" and "Cell standby" as the relative battery use culprits. I figure, though, that this must be something I downloaded that is killing the battery. I love the ROM overall, but if this battery issue can't be resolved, I need to find something else quick. I'm a slave to a charge port.
Thanks.

Have you tried conditioned your battery by wiping your battery stats.bin? Why didn't you flash the newest Trigger?
Yeah, you need multiple cycles for battery to be even close to accurate, and you should recalibrate.
Are you using other kernels or themes?

Let your phone die wipe battery stats in recovery mode. charge to 100% then use the battery calibration app from the market and re-calibrate the battery. I always repeat the process. Sometimes when flashing new ROMs your batterystats.bin can get a little funky so I always do this after flashing a ROM and my battery works great.
Definitely check the Kernel and Modem your running if there not the ones that came with Trigger than that could be causing your problem as well.
From what i have got from prior experiences. Using odin to go to stock as if your phone just came out of the box and then flashing removes all the old files. When i did this i went from getting almost 10 hours... now my phone gets 17 normal and if i dont use it as much as a normal day it iwll hit 24 hours no problem.

This post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806022) is saying to wipe battery stats at full charge... So what is it?
And why didn't I flash the newest version? It was when I flashed it.
What was the use in the 40 minutes after charge? I could see that if you had screen brightness high, and lots of wifi surfing or video use. I downloaded an app called 'screen filter' and it lets me lower the brightness lower than stock and I have noticed significant battery length increase since use. The stock dim options are not enough. Its still too bright and a waste of battery.

Both. I wipe mine at 0 and at 100 but once you wipe make sure you fully charge without interuption and vice-versa

same here, and i suggest you do the charging during night when your sleeping, so then there'll be no interruptions, like having to reboot for some odd reason etc. That can disturb the process of recalibration/conditioning.

Pretty much nothing... Maybe looked at Facebook once and replied to a text?
So I drained it, wiped the battery stats, then looked at what it was doing - probably 1 minute after it was totally dead and wiped. The screen said it was at 14% already.
In less than a minute - 14%...

Let it die again and wipe again. Your stats are off from the flash its normal. Just let completely die wipe charge wipe repeat. It will take a couple times normally to get back 100% right

I used to chage my battery overnight with good results but since going to gingerbread it usually drops from 90-100% whne unplugging. was reading up and found out it's saftey feature created by Sammy.
I have CM7.1 on my MT4G. Over the past week or so, my battery has been dying after 2-3 minutes of use. I'll get a full charge, take it off the charger, use any app(Angry Birds, Gtalk, text messaging...) and the phone will shut itself off after just a couple minutes of use. When I turn it back on, it says 2%-3%. It then shuts itself off again, I plug it in and turn it on...says anything from 3% to 90%.
I've always ran the battery down and charged to full. Is my battery kaput? Is there a way to fix this?

Most likely.. take out the battery and inspect for leaks(might be very small discharge you might not see it clearly leak can and will damage your phone)..let it die completely, and let it stay off, charge it till the green light comes on, reboot into recovery, clear battery stats, reboot and see how long it last, also change your brightness, and other settings that might be consuming battery use..if none of these helps.. just buy another battery.
Sounds like your battery is screwed. Just buy a oem battery or get a mugen power 1650mAh

My issues aren't quite that bad, but after I upgraded to CM7.1 from 7.0, by battery has been terrible. 15-20m of phone calls over BT takes ~20% of the battery. 15m on Angry Birds chewed up ~40% of the battery. I downloaded the latest nightly (252) and will see what happens.
Try a dif battery and see if it does the same thing. So you can rule things out

Mines also been horrible since I went from CM 7.0 to CM 7.1. Not sure whats up but it dies in like 6 hours on standby. the battery use app shows that most of the battery usage is by "Cell Standby". So effectively, doing 'nothing' is eating up the battery?

I guess I'm not having the problem you guys are having with battery drain. Granted I didnt use my phone that heavily, but still sitting at 60% after 10 hours. But if your battery is dead after 3 minutes something is seriously wrong, I agree and try a new battery.

You need to calibrate the battery after changing ROM's. Download a battery calibrator from the market. (Don't pay for one. There are like 10 free ones)
Charge the phone fully overnight. Calibrate it in the morning.
Give it a few days to gather new battery data, and then enjoy getting a full day's use from the phone.
Update
So, it's gonna have to be the battery. Recalibrated, no good. Tried a few different ROMs from CM7 nightlies to MIUI, no good.
Waiting for the new battery to get here to be sure.
Thanks for all of the help and advice!
same problem here
hello there, i got 2 mytouch 4g both running the same rom (virtuous unity 2.39) one of them has eaten 2 batteries that i bought thinking that the batteries were somehow broken or damaged... i came across this thread, read the reply recomending battery calibrator when i reached for my phone (that i left sitting on my drawer waiting for a new batt AGAIN) to give it a try and to my surprise it was still on and i has been on for 2 days 11hours and the fricking battery was at 97% before that it started to turn off-discharge so i put the thing on airplane mode and there it was till now... dunno why or what but i think it has something to do with the radio/network... hope we find a cure for this
I've been having this same issue, and I was wondering if replacing the battery fixed the issue? Thanks.
