Based on the last CES Archos launched their Archos 101 Home tablet. Archos Home tablet edition has a much lower specs compared to Archos Internet tablet edition but in the video provided at Archosfans.com it says that it has support to Gingerbread and Future Version of android.
Does this mean that the Current Archos 101IT edition can still be upgrade to those version of android?
Any thoughts in thi matter???

Of course it can be upgraded to the newer OS version. The big question is will Archos actually do it. I'm really hoping they will but won't be surprised if they don't.
if archos won't upgrade our A101IT maybe others can make custom roms? have any of you seen or heard if one is under development?

No one has mentioned making a Gingerbread ROM.
i stumbled upon a video on youtube. the video is captured at last weeks CES.
in the video they ask the guy if honeycomb will be on the tablet. he says "uh yah"
he also mentions how full flash capability will be available by end of month.

lol. Not much of a commitment. Plus, this is the same crew that tried to say that the 7 Home Tablet is a Gen8 tablet. So, I think I will not be holding my breath on this one.
What do you think about 256 RAM issue? I suppose that 2.3 (even 3.0) could be run on 101IT, however, it may work very slow!

Won't know until we try. They said the same thing about Froyo until it was running on devices that had 256MB.

Exactly. We get into a Windows and Mac mindset but Android is different from those systems in that each progressive version gets a little better at using system resources, not worse so you don't always have to upgrade the hardware to run the new software. My original MyTouch phone with a 600 ghz processor and 128 mb of memory runs much smoother on froyo than it ever did on donut or eclair.
That said, there are diminishing returns and Honeycomb is really a major step up in terms of functionality so I am not holding my breath that Archos will take the time to upgrade considering they will be probably be putting out new devices by then. I love my A70 but I sort of look at it like an early adopter type device to see how useful the form factor for me (it is...I have an hour to 90 minute commute and it is perfect).
I plan to upgrade and maybe even get a contract (yikes!) for a honeycomb tablet later this year. I would never consider $275 chump change but if I can use it for 8 months to a year and then sell it for $100-150 to put toward an upgrade, I would be happy.
I considered the Galaxy Tab but a 2 year contract on this generation of devices is a bad move in my opinion.

i hope they do make an upgrade, but they might wait until honeycomb cause its supposed to be for tablets or something
i thought better be hoping to the developers to made the gingerbread rom than hoping the archos team made it

I connect it to several dozen multi core server blades. It does cut down on portability however.

i'd think if you go the SDE route and boot android from SD that the community would update it even if archos doesnt.

What are the differences in the two devices? Other than the storage size they seem to be the same

Basically it says that Samsung employees in Germany have spread out the word that the Tab will get a Gingerbread update.... eventually (that is, they didn't mention when)

Gingerbread is basically the same as froyo. The only real improvement is making the text selecting more intuitive. I want the api from honeycomb, for dual pane applications and the new 3d interface.
So that means either honeycomb or 2.4. For me 2.4 is probably better, since I will meanly be using the tab as a phone with a tablet profile.
So Sammy, please give us 2.4 and not just 2.3.

Don't know if I want a honeycomb port. What I want is a performance improvement and Gingerbread is such an improvement. The JIT compiler is optimized again (like it was the case with froyo) and there is a concurrent garbage collector for better memory management.
If honeycomb is even faster (for a non dual core device) yes than I want honeycomb. And as for the beta build, I rather wait for a beta of the 2.4 Frankenstein build LoL
Furthermore, if Samsung is committing itself to an upgrade, this means the tab won't become obsolete when other new 7" tablets hit the market, like for example the Flyer. It means that they have plans to stay on top of this segment, which is great. Maybe they will also improve the built in Samsung software, like for example the browser and the mail app. So no buzz, but rather the real thing for me

Whatever happens, it'll be nice if Samsung supports the device with OS updates for at least a year.

I think it's relatively easy to map the galaxy Tabs hardware buttons to the software functionality as soon as the source goes AOSP
Then we can get rid of the software buttons too... boom! perfect!
I hope the new launcher doesn't eat up too much performance

I've read that the galaxy tab and galaxy line of phones have similar hardware... makes me think that new versions of android that are released for the phones could potentially work on our tabs.
not sure though, and im not a dev.. but i'd love some fresh official sgt firmware releases before samsung stops supporting the tab

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs Honeycomb (Android 3.x). The retail version comes with 3.1
Gingerbread is Android 2.3.x and it's designed for phones, not tablets. The link that basskid provides shows how Honeycomb has some phone layout support... kind of pointless to enable on a tablet. It was a bigger deal when rumors were flying about on whether or not Honeycomb was going to be released for phones (which we now know it won't be).

Well, I guess there is that, but you still need root to change the LCD Density.
Still, it depends on why the OP wants Gingerbread. If it's because Honeycomb is too laggy for him, just enabling the phone interface might not fix that; and if it's only because of lag I'd just wait for better Honeycomb ROMs to come out.
No need to ask why he wants to do this. Hell, if a how-to was posted, I'd do it just to do it.

Yes honeycomb is slow as compare to my gingebread on my galaxy tab 7. Even though gt 7 has SINGLE CORE processor its very fast. Plus typing on the honeycomb is too slow i hit letter and it appears late. I think this is a honeycomb issue. I am wondering if gt 7 with slower processor and less ram than gt 10.1 is so fast with gingerbread how fast would gingerbread works on tegra 2 plus 1gb ram. I hope we can switch firmware just like we do on PC sometimes windows 7 and sometimes Windows XP on same PC.
So it looks like 3.2 is what we really need for our 7" Gtabs. Though honestly I actually just like the plain grid of icons over the tablet specific Honeycomb interface. My use pattern with my tab is more app centric where I open an app to accomplish anything compared to my phone which is more widgeted with a lot more glancable information.

Am I the only one that thinks this is strange? They introduced the "7 Plus" with upgraded h/w (1.2GHz Exynos) and HC and now they're introducing what's basically the original 7" with nothing new but ICS? If the specs are correct the 1GHz chip is probably the now ancient Teg2. The only h/w difference appears to be 1MB of RAM instead of 512K. So what's their strategy? Introduce ICS via newly named devices? Will there be a Tab 10.1 "2" that has ICS? What would that mean to the existing Tab 10.1 "1?" If they tie ICS to launching second versions of their existing devices, even if they intend to upgrade the originals, we'll be waiting an awfully long time. To me, this isn't good news until we know how it affects getting ICS on existing products.
That makes sense, I acknowledge your concern but we could always use the system dump from the new tab ,especially if it has the same hw, although it may need some scaling

Most phones are also much thicker than the tablets are. It's a form-factor limitation. When it comes to camera, it is mostly all about the optics. It'll get there as the processors behind these cameras keep getting faster, better, smaller. But until then, you need to rely on the glass and space between them.

I think this is gonna be a budget price model to complete with Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. But i don't think they can offer this at a price tag less than 300$

I have been looking at videos of this tab, and scrolling through home screens in portrait packed full of widgets looks flawlessly smooth. I really hope we get that new touchwiz launcher.
Edit: I have the galaxy s2, and I have been running the an ICS leak of the last few weeks, Samsung has updated the touch-wiz launcher a lot for ICS, and it looks a lot like the launcher on this new tab. So if they will update the s2 to this new launcher style, hopefully they will do the same for our tab, as this new touchwiz launcher looks smooth and very nice. If it is as smooth on our tab as it is on this new 7inch, it will make all my tabby dreams come true
