Probably won't see much from Sprint here. Maybe at MWC for Spring/Summer announcements. BTW, some of these phones are crazy good. AT&T is surprisingly looking on top with their Android phones now. First the Inspire 4G with a non gimped 4.5" SAMOLED and 1.2 GHz Hummingbird and now the Atrix w/ dual core and a HUGE battery (I knew dual cores would be battery eaters).

Dual core + HSPA+/"4G" + 1GB (!) of RAM + 1900 mAh battery
Edit: As cool as dual cores are, I wonder how a updated <45nm 1 GHz Cortex A9 and 1900 mAh battery would be like. It'd be a lot faster than the current single core 1 GHz phones and probably would last 24 hours with moderate to heavy use. I know a ton of people would disagree but my dream EVO 2 would include something like that plus a really powerful GPU.

Might have been the first pseudo 4G phone but not the first with a front facing camera. And if you're argument is that it had both, I could just pull out two obscure features and call a lot of phones the "first".

Like I said, it's a poor argument. Front facing cams on phones were cutting edge when they were being pushed along with 3G way back when. It just never caught on and is still pretty fringe today. I've always said this, and it sure to piss you off, but aside from being a WiMax phone the EVO was nothing more than a HD2 with Android on it. Hardly cutting edge.
These phones on the other are clearly on a new level.

A processor battery eating bump & what NFC? Big whoop. They all seem to follow the EVO's theme.
The guy was right, nothing match the EVO (feature for feature) and at the time it launched & it was "the biggest reveal" at the show.
Show me some battery innovations, removable ram & graphics, USB OTG, Biometric capacitive screens, etc in these new phones & then I'll say ok a "whole new level".

There are a ton of new better phones in CES and a few of them are ushering a new level in smartphones. Maybe it's not just one, but these all ARE on a new level. I'll focus on one: The Astrix.
The Tegra 2 it has is a dual core Cortex A9. That's a next gen CPU. Everything out now (the old Snapdragon, the new Snapdragon/Scorpions, Hummingbird, and OMAPs) all have Cortex A8's. A single core Cortex A9 would handily out perform any of those right now, now add in the fact that it's a dual core. That's a new level if I've ever seen one. Battery life with dual cores have ALWAYS been a concern for me but it looks like this phone has that covered with a whopping 1900 mAh stock battery.
Now let's talk about memory. 1 GB of RAM, double ups on all phones except the MYT4G and Desire HD which have 768 MB. 16 GB of internal storage not that new but combined with a preloaded 32 GB micro SD and it's most I've seen out of a Android phone out of the box.
The screen is a 4" 960x540 resolution display (16:9). Not the first but definitely next gen compared to the current gen of Androids phones.
Some usual suspects: front facing camera, HSPA+ for "4G" speeds. Some new/different ones: Fingerprint reader, computer docking.
When the EVO was announced it really was just a HD2 with WiMax and Android. It was the Android phone we were all expecting but aside from WiMax it was current gen. This and a few other phones shown today are absolutely next gen with no 2010 phone being able to compare. Bottom line, the EVO was Android hardware catching up and introducing WiMax; this phone is setting a standard for all phones.

I wouldn't get it but I also wouldn't call the CPU/GPU outdated. It's practically a given that it's just a rebranded Desire Z which is part of HTC's latest line of phones -- at least for now.

Hmm, well the latest specs that I read (about a week ago) said that it would have an 800mhz processor - endgadget says 5mp camera, no front-facing, ect. Not sure the front facing camera has every been used on my phone, but it's still cool to have, I guess; I was referring more to the outdate/price of it in my mind - Radio Shack said $150, so to me, it's outdated/slower/smaller than the EVO and costs more.

How is it slower? I agree that it's not a overall very appealing phone but how is it faster? It has a better CPU but more importantly it has a much better GPU.
This is the 2nd gen snapdragon and it overclocks like a motha! I been hearing 1.7 Ghz OC stable on G2's. I'm just turned off by the small screen and the keyboard. It's a shame really. I just hope the next evo has the looks of the Desire HD, but with better cpu/gpu.

I am all over this if those specs are correct. I have been looking for a slide out keyboard smartphone running android. I know there is the Epic, but Samsung phones have a history of no support/sucking.
Currently got an Touch Pro 2, and just waiting for the perfect phone. The front facing camera is the make or break for me. I would like to have that, and if this phone ends up not having it then I won't get it. All the pictures seem to show a camera on the front by the top speaker bar, so I am hoping all the rumors that there is no FFC are wrong.

Previous specs from androidpolice.com NOT correct (here is the box showing the 5MP camera, no ffc). It's the desire-z without the hinge. Still a better cpu/gpu than the evo, but...

What's funny is the Evo is actually about to be outdated tech. Hell, the CPU/GPU is the next generation of Snapdragon, so it is actually moving forward.
My girlfriend has an Evo, and i love it, but i like how this phone has the same resolution in a smaller screen.
I'm definitely getting one on launch day.
The internals are better in the Evo shift than the Evo.
Clock speed is irrelevant, much like clock speed on processors.
Don't even try to suggest that the i5s at 2.5 ghz are slower than the Pentium 4 3.0ghz.
My comment to the Evo shift is the fact that, while it is better than the Evo, it is 2010 technology.
By summer we are going to have 2011 technology.
Why would I not just wait 3 - 5 months and pay the same amount for much better?
I find it odd not one person has mentioned the landscape sense. That's usually a hit
I'm still unsure about this device. I love my EVO, and I love the G2, but the screen size on the Shift is just too small for me. Not to mention, the buttons at the bottom look laughably too big on the poor thing.
I guess it would be pretty nice to have the new CPU/GPU butttt I'm not sure. I'm pretty picky about keyboards so maybe I will know once I've played with one in person.

Well the phone is smaller but that D-pad does not make any sense... why include such thing on a device with a touchscreen. Even better would be to remove the D-pad to make space for some additional keys OR expand the current keys.
It looks 'toy-like' similar to the Epic.
I think I will wait for another device. Staying with the EVO until something else pops up.

My wife is completely gaga over this phone and being someone who got suckered by Samsung and my local sprint reps (When I was torn between the epic and the evo at epic launch, they all said 'hands down its the epic it'll have 2.2 in a few weeks'...heh) into buying a phone with a keyboard I wish I had gone the other way. Personally, I hate the blue tint of the phone, I despise the trackpad (who uses a trackpad anymore?), I could care less about the lack of FFC or the 5mp vs 8mp but in all honesty there needed to be a smaller alternative for people wanting high-end hardware on sprint without having to have a massive screen. Part of the reason my better half loves this phone is that she rarely carries a purse and if she got an Epic or an Evo she could not carry her phone in her pocket as she is used to and would then have to carry a bag for it.
Sprint just posted the fact sheet but no availability date.
http://newsroom.sprint.com/news/htc-evo-shift-4g-fact-sheet.htm
the fact sheet says it has the newest version of HTC Sense. There's no reason they wouldn't include it.
what's up with sprint and this year CES....the other carriers got so many devices out and sprint had just the Shift....ok might be a good phone but come on....give me a brake...when others get dual cores....i am a little disappointed by Sprint...whats your view on it?
I have to agree. I would expect big things from CTIA this year.
This is exactly why I believe Sprint is in bed with Apple because Sprint had to make concessions to bring the iPhone to Sprint unlike Verizion and all their wonderful Androids. After all, Mr. Jobs never does what everyone expects, and everyone is expecting Verizion, so when it comes to Sprint, I won't be at all surprised.

I am 100% confident that the iPhone is going to Verizon. Whether it is also going to Sprint, I doubt, due to Apple not being able to handle the increase in customers.
Sprint hasn't really had much at CES ever.. maybe 1 or 2 phone at best.. who care really..
I mean..most of the stuff shown is stuff i would never buy or use.. etc..
I am considering going with a cheap flip phone. just for calls and text.. and get a nice tablet. and a mifi from virgin mobile..lol ( 40 ) bucks for unlimited. hard to pass up..

Definitely not dual core processor. I don't get where people keep getting that info. It's just a second generation snapdragon processor like the ones found in the G2 and Desire Z, underclocked to 800 mhz.
It's faster because it's second generation. The EVO 4g has the same processor as the Incredible which is one of the first gen snapdragons.
No dual core devices from HTC yet at CES. I'm sad. So far Motorola easily has the most interesting phone with its dual core processor getting 2616 on Quadrant, stock. And it's going to AT&T of all places.
Ah, so the Shift's processor is underclocked. Makes sense now. Was wondering why it was slower then the Evo's ha ha

Even though its speed is 'slower' it still is a faster processor than the Evo's at 200 less mhz, and has been proven to get higher benchmark tests.
Also, it's easier to overclock. The G2 is stable at 1900 mhz. Evo users can only go to 1200 if I'm correct?
Would the increased benchmarks have anything to do with a GPU? Some would take a seperate CPU and GPU and dual core, like the LG Optimus I think. Also it is depressing reading all the new phones coming out for every other carrier other than sprint, it makes me sad to see all the stories of dual cores with everyone else but we are left out.

Lol. I'm just glad he posted this in Android Development.
I'll reply to this since its in the proper sub-forum now.
I am glad sprint has not already released the EVO successor.
Sprint is playing there cards to see what everyone else is bringing to the table. Now that most carriers have announced there new devices I believe sprint will bring out the big gun. Hopefully at CITA.
given that HTC is doing very well in smartphone market..
look at this chart:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/03/03/android-ahead-of-blackberry-ios-for-smartphone-market-share/
they have more than samsung..
i dont think they want to loose that ground... so they will have something out to compete with it.
but I am not sure they will out spec it. looking at EVO vs Galaxy S.
but I think the EVO was better .. developed to have all parts of the phone work together bettter.
The next Evo will be better in all categories except the quality of the display. Samsung has production plants for amoled screens.

I'm pretty sure the reason Sprint hasn't come out with any major phones (and HTC) is bc they will probably move to LTE.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if they delayed the Evo 2 so it could be the first LTE Sprint phone.
I'm very happy with my Evo, and probably won't upgrade to anything less then dual core, 3d, dockable, and 4"+ screen.

Imo the current evo practically beats this, so it has extra ram slightly better ffc, and a slightly bigger battery, and a dual core, sorry but it will take some massive changes for me to use my new every two and upgrade, I like to ride a phone out for as close too two maybe three years and with the evo maybe 4 years. I had the instinct for just about 2
Years, and the razr like three. And I cant see how the evo could do more
It can do every thing my desktop can except play start craft, plus with the roms if I get bored I'll just flesh a new one and volia new phone

Ooops, ****, my bad for dropping this in the wrong forum lol! I was on my 3rd glass of wine.
Anyway, I agree. That is the one area where I wish HTC would pick it up, we still have crappy 65k color LCD's and crappy touch sensitive buttons.
I'm not fond of the SGSII single dpad button either. Just use 4 normal buttons like Moto.

In terms of potential, yes the Evo beats it but a BLIND man can see that phone is better than the Evo. That dual core processor and way better graphics beats the Evo. 1080p Camera again beats the Evo BUT the development behind the Evo is incredible compared to Samsung Phones. If they do another Evo they have to bring the best of the best specs (just like the evo was at launch). If they do that and the same developers we have now make that transition to the Evo 2..GAME OVER
The next gen HTC Android phone will not beat this phone. The dual core CPU qualcomm will be using in this generation is still A8 based which is about 25% slower than the A9 in the Tegra 2. Its up clocked to 1.2 Ghz which will help but then that comes with higher power consumption too. Its GPU is also just surpassing the PowerVR SGX 540 in the original Galaxy S. The Mali 400 GPU is supposed to be 2+ times more powerful than the SGX 540. The Galaxy S is now 4.3" and the SAMOLED plus display gets rid of the pentile matrix pattern so its now the undisputed best display on the market. Samsung also always has great cameras and HTC almost always has terrible ones. Samsung also usually has more storage, HTC wont touch 32GB of internal storage .
Im pretty sure that the GS2 will be slightly better but I still would probably never buy one. My next phone will absolutely have to have CM support. I refuse to buy a Android phone that will be outdated.

With all the talk lately about Sprints announcement at the end of the month and what phones might be coming out this year, this is what I've been most concerned about. I know a few people with the Epic and the support for that and many other devices is terrible. I'm almost considering sitting back and seeing where a lot of these developers go before even deciding on a phone.

Quad core would rock. I really hope Sprint is getting one of these.
I saw that early today about the edge browsing something completely unrelated. Though it'd be nice to have one.
I would have to say that the Edge will be the next phone I will buy to replace the Evo. I was really thinking about getting the Galaxy Nexus, but the more I think about it, the Nexus really isn't much of an upgrade. Yes, it has a dual core processor, but only 1.2ghz, which we have already seen those phones out all year. The camera is only 5mp, which is a downgrade from the 8mp we have now. Yes, it has ICS, but every phone coming out now will have that.
The quad core processor in the edge will be the top of the line for most of next year, and the screenshots from the gaming and 1080p video playback from that processor look stunning.
I have to agree. The Edge looks like a beast!
I'm hoping that the Edge will be tweaked for Sprint and released as the next EVO.

The only problem with the quad cores is heat and batterylife require the phone to be monstorously thick the edge has a 2800 mah batt stock and aluminum cooling gills last prototype I saw was as thick as my evo with the 3500 batt in it but it was an early prototype I believe the launch model will have the gel cell battery which will slim it down significantly but i expect it will still be pretty fat it got really hot after 2 hrs of gaming too but modern combat 2 did look pretty smooth compared to my evo or my gs2 sorry for the run on my period key and comma hate my fat fingers in portrait mode
4.7 is too big... they are getting carried away with screen size. 4.3 is perfect
screen sizes isn't so bad until u pair it with the thickness on the prototype. I played with I'm 6'7'' have really large hands and I felt like I as trying to hold an iPad to my head it wasn't real comfortable. if they can slim it down to the thickness of the gs2 it would be more bearable atleast for bigger guys like me a small person say 5' - 5'6'' would look fairly stupid with the phone being almost as big as their head think the zach morris shoe phone with a touch screen

I could agree, I'm 6'4 , toned, but really big hands, so 4.7", ect would be okay for me, but as you said, would look stupid in the hands of someone 'average' height in the 5'6" range.
I don't find my Evo to be too big at all with a 3500 maH Battery, so I doubt 4.7, an extra .1 of an inch around would feel much different
Yeah, I been seeing scoops on the edge all day. Pretty excited about something like that. Timing should be close for my upgrade....glad I didn't jump to the evo3d. Edge is GSM, but hopefully something similar will come to sprint.
Stoked.

By the time these come out the new exyonus will come out with a 10x better gpu and then you'll wait more for that and by the time that comes tegra will have 8 core processor. See where I'm getting at? Just get the Samsung galaxy

whyyyyyyyyyyyy...... quad core? whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
there's a cdma edge prototype codenamed the EVOlved 4g aimed for sprint I have one here at my house courtesy of a close friend of my dads who works for HTC. Its a nice phone but this prototype gets really hot I wanted to post a video review but was warned if I did I would be prosecuted for theft of intellectual property as I don't own the prototype and I'm not supposed to even have it. I can't even post photos just specs and opinions. personally I don't like it in its current form due to heat, size and the fact that even with a 2800 mah batt I can only get 5-6 hrs on a charge and that's using it as a WiFi only device no radios or anything activated.
Quad core? ? Is that really necessary? I've got a quad core desktop computer that goes ridiculously fast...what does everyone do on their phones today requires that type of power? ? Not trying to be a ****, just wondering.

bought a 3VO, now i see this 4 core beast about to drop........epic fail on my part, plus i miss my OG Evo
trying to get to 10
I'm not seeing the reason for more cores than 1....2 max. Android ain't no where near the multitasking capabilities of windows. We have recent apps but not a list of open windows; yet. Think this has become more of a bragging rights deal. A group of manufacturers standing around comparing core sizes.

int'l gs2 --> e4gt cannot be considered butchered. it was bigger with a better battery and the camera is vertical instead of horizontal (which looks even better imo). the only thing is that it lost the physical button, still hardly considered butchered. i wouldnt lose faith.
it was delayed last year because of the all the apple lawsuit's, wasnt it? it could come sooner than 4-5 months this time around

It was more a joke than not. And both of the Galaxy 'variants' were 'late,' if I recall correctly. The first, the Epic, was a drastic change. I suppose it wasn't even that much of a negative as some embraced the HKB.
I suppose a "JK" should have been appended.

if you want to compare back to the OG epic then the trend from og epic > e4gt > s3 suggests Samsung is getting better with sticking to their original design, but only time will tell. competition is constantly raising the bar. Samsung cant afford to drop the ball on this one
I'd agree with that. But it wasn't a direct knock on Sammy. It was, again, a joke. More so on Sprint's part than anyone. And was concerning the recent Evo news over anything else.

my b bro. just having a little fun
It's all good.
Definitely interested in seeing what is what with the SGSIII.
Sgs3 is rumored to have a 16mp rear camera and a 3mp ffc with a 4.8" super amoled + screen the only bad thing is I think they are rumored to stick with 1gb of RAM and I'd rather see 2gb of RAM with a 2.2ghz dualcore and a dualcore GPU instead of the quadcore personally, really don't see a point in a quadcore in a phone. My dualcore in my et4g is plenty fast and if it had more ram and a slightly better gpu it would be one beast of a device. I honestly think the whole quadcore thing is all for bragging rights and has no real world functionality at this time, I mean what the hell are you going to do with a phone that needs 4cores for processing, unless its going to have 2 cores dedicated to graphics, really no point

Man if those specs are real I figure this phone will start at the $300 level. I'll place my pre-order on the E4G LTE but that phone would be to slick to pass up. But with a May 22th announcement and the always delayed release in the US I may not be willing to wait. I'm sure the E4G LTE will handle all my needs for two years. Plus with that case design should it be real, I don't see that battery being removable either as it would break the whole vibe.

same. i'm gonna put a preorder for the E4G LTE because it is still one hell of a phone and i really cant afford (time and money) to worry about getting the newest, bestest phone in the world for a couple weeks before something better is announced.
