[Q] NAND vs ZIP ROMS - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

so what are the diffrences in flashing a rom with MAGLDR 1.11 and the new ClockworkMod

ClockworkMod is a way to flash not just the build, but themes, keyboards, and languages. It's how they flash the aforementioned stuff on actual Android phones like the Nexus One. I personally like it better since you don't even need a computer. You could download a theme or whatever from your HD2, then reboot, go into CWM, and flash it right there. It's a great utility. I recommend using it.

great, i used to use amon ra recovery when i had a g1 im looking forward to the advancements in hd2 android roms

so a dev could release an update to his/her rom and it would preserve your data when you flash it?

They tend to provide the full ROM with updates. Generally, (depending on the changes), yes you can just run the zip to 'update' ROM and retain data, although it is always advised to backup before hand.

Realy, what is the benefict of the Recovery ?

The idea is very well, but every build has its own recovery (or flash.cfg) so instead of using only the sdacrd for flashing (the original idea) now we must use the 2 things : the usb flasher with DAF and the update.zip in the sdacrd
Really did you have to post this question here?
This is an important question. I don't quite understand the idea as well. I don't think anyone has explained anything here like that, especially taking in consideration that we've never used android before except just recently.
really intereseted in that answer to!
but for me another question is: what is the special thing about a2sd+ ?
I did not use recovery yet but isn't it that you flash the recovery 1 time and than you can download the .zip and flash roms via the recovery.
OR
You don't flash it via recovery but just via DAF.exe like I do at this moment.
The a2sd+ makes a part of your SD card act like it's internal storage so you can install more apps than on 280mb that is left when you don't have the 1024leo phone (usa = leo1024 , eur = leo512).
1. You can make a full backup of your system so if you hose your data you can wipe and restore back to the last backup.
2. You can install new roms from the microsd card as long as the system partition fits what you have set. Some people prefer it that way, and some people have bad usb ports and need it that way.

it must be like that, but in the real world, every rom builder, uses differents MTD partitions sizes, so we have to reflash its recovery again, even if we have already flashed it before with the defaults sizes (150, 250 or 400 MB)
Why every build do not uses a standard sizes, fixed by the Recovery builder, RaiderX303 ?
RaiderX303, you have make a very interesting work, thank you very match for that, but can you please continue you works and resolve this ?
Recovery allows people to download and flash roms from the SD card, no need for a pc except for the first time install using DAF to flash the partition layout, it allows people to switch easily between roms, some people like myself have a Rom they prefer to use, when a new Rom comes out that looks good I can backup the Rom I'm using and flash the new Rom, if I don't like the new Rom I can flash back to my old Rom and not lose any data

Hey guys, i'm using MJD's 2.1. I thought the benefit of ClockworkMod was to enable me to go into recovery from the reboot menu. Also, it was supposed to allow me to reset to factory settings. It seems that none of that is working.
If I reboot into bootloader or recovery it just reboots into Android again. Resetting to factory settings does absolutely nothing apart from rebooting.
What am I doing wrong?

Rom Manager and Different CWM versions

Okay, so when is the CWM v3 going to start being compatible with Sense based roms so I can flash back my stock Sense to get my Data connection back and then restore my CM7 nightly back? Is this possible, or am I missing something? I would really like to know if I can restore my data connection when switching back to my Evo after using my Epic for a while. Is there a way to do this rather than going back to a Sense rom to get data back?
Why don't you just flash a older version of Clockwork, flash a sense rom, then go back to your current set up?
CWM 3 is compatible with all types of ROMs. It's probably because the ROM you're trying to use is packaged in a ZIP with Amend scripting instead of Edify. Support for Amend scripting was removed by Google in the stock recovery as of 1.5 so Koush removed support for it in CWM 3. There's not much you can do other than flash another recovery, such as an earlier verison of CWM. It's up to the individual devs to update their scripts and it can be difficult, every time I try to change one of my scripts to Edify for the theme I created, I end up with a ZIP that won't flash at all.

There's your problem.
ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread-based (Android 2.3) ROMs. Evil 4G is a Froyo-based (Android 2.2) ROM. These different versions of Android use incompatible filesystems.
How to recover:
1. Download CyanogenMod 7, a Gingerbread-based ROM, to your PC. Choose the newest release candidate (RC2) or the most recently Nightly build.
2. Boot into CWM Recovery, select "mounts and storage" and make your SD card mountable via USB.
3. Copy the CM7 .zip file to your SD card.
4. Install the .zip after a full wipe / factory reset
5. If you want to stay with CM7, also download the Google Applications (Gapps) .zip to your PC, copy to your SD card and and install it after you complete the install of CM7.
6. Boot CM7.
7. If you want to install Evil 4G, run Rom Manager and have it flash CWM Recovery 2.5.1.2, then reboot into Recovery, full wipe / factory reset, and install Evil as previously planned.
Thanks Ill get on it....
So could I just get CM7 on there then get an older version of clockwork to use the backup I made for the Mytouch rom I had before?
Or is the backup I made pretty much lost because Im using Clockwork V3?

Your backup was made with an incompatible version of CWM Recovery. It may not be usable. That said, some people have reported in the some of the many many threads on this subject that they have been able to restore a Froyo backup made with V3, while running V2. Your results might match theirs. The steps I show above let you stop at CM7 or continue on to Evil 4G, and do not include restoring your Stock ROM.

this gets you running with the 2 versions of recovery, one for froyo, one for gingerbread. whichever backup you want to restore, just use the matching recovery so your old backup is fine
I neglected to mention CWMR 3.0.0.6, that camrs73 just posted about, with a link to its main thread. This is a custom version of CWM Recovery built by option94 that supports both Froyo and Gingerbread filesystems. In order to install it, you need to have a functioning Android system first. You can install it =after= you get CM7 or Evil 4G up and running.
Ok thank God lol
Thanks for the Input guys Ill flash CM7 then download that Clock work and let you know how it went.

From here if you install 3.0.0.6 Clockwork recovery image (link in my signature) you can flash between 2.2 and 2.3 ROMS w/o any problems.
Yes!!! Im saved!!!
Thanks jggimi ,camrs73 and of coarse neidlinger for your clockwork mod!!
One more question...can I have more than one backup saved on Clockwork?
you can have as many as storage space allows and flash whichever one you feel like at the time (with the appropriate recovery of course)

[Q] Flashing another ROM over an existing ROM?

Apologies if I am at all asking a question that has been answered before (forum search did not help much), but I am trying to find out how to safely flash a different ROM onto my device.
I have installed HSPL3, Radio 2.15, MAGLDR 1.13, ClockworkMod Recovery and NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7 using the NAND method.
I want to shop around and check a few different ROM's before donating to the one that suits my needs, but I need to know if it is simply a case of flashing a new ROM over the existing one using the same methods or is it slightly more complicated than that?
Thanks.
Ugh no need to flash over hspl, magldr, or radio. Just use cwm to flash it. However depending on the rom, you may need to flash a different cwm. Eg. Cyano is the 150mb partition, sense is the biggest partition.

Hi,
If I were you ,I would backup your existing ROM in CWM(go to backup and restore).
That way if your next ROM is no good or if there is any problem, you can easily restore the original.
Before you install a new ROM,READ the [OP] carefully ,paying special attention to the size of the new recovery partition.
Then you can flash the new recovery partition, wipe data, cache partition and dalvik(in advanced),
then install zip from sd card.
Do I need to clear anything for smaller ROMS/MODS?
I currently am running the latest GingerTh3ory Rom with its respective radio. Then in it's candystor3 app I downloaded the 'honeycomb battery' full mod pack so that it uses a honeycomb UI with the battery and small things like that.
When I change the battery and do system and individual MODS should I clear anything? I don't want to slow my phone down by keep flashing MODS over top of one another? My friend convinced me to root and so now I'm getting used to this.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks
I have come to find that most new Rom's usually will format everything needed when you are flashing over another Rom. Just to be cautious go into CWM and maually fomat Boot, system, cache, sd-ext(if applies) data, and then go to advanced and wipe Dalvik cache...

Links

Can somebody update this list with the actual links to what you saying to download? I would like to give this a try, but not sure where all these links are.
Assuming you are comfortable with the issues and concepts associated with rooting (terms like bootloader, recovery and ROM's), I suggest you do the following:
1. Go to unrevoked.com and root the Incredible; also run unrevoked-forever to secure S-OFF status.
2. Go to dougpiston.com and get the latest CWM for the phone; 3.0.0.7 if it's Amoled display (Hardware version 2) or SLCD (Hardware version 3). (BTW, note that this ROM erroneously reports Amoled Incredibles as the wrong hardware version). Flash that from hboot. Remove the file from the root directory of the SD card afterwards.
3. Download the 7.07 leaked radio; download the ROM; download the updated OTA kernel from a few days ago.
4. Flash away (I would do ROM, kernel, then radio. Remember to flash dalvik/cache before flashing a kernel; and remember that the radio is flashed in hboot.)

Is that what you're looking for?
EDIT: In your Step 4, when you go to Doug Piston's site for the ROM flashing tutorial, after the screen shot to "Wipe Cache Partition", I also do the following:
Mounts and Storage - format /system; format /boot; format /data
Advanced - Wipe Dalvik
Then continue on to the following screen shot on the page, with "Installing zip from SD Card".

Let me look through your links.. I have already done unrevoked and am S-OFF. I had flashed CM7 but when back to stock looking to flash that OTA that was "suppose" to come out. I'm tired of waiting and Nils ROM looks more of what I am looking for then CM7. But there just seems to be a lot more steps. I am not sure what the latest CWM means? Also not positive on which LCD screen I have.

CWM is ClockworkMod Recovery, which is where you go to flash/backup ROMs. You can update it by downloading the zip and putting it onto the root of your SD card, renaming it PB31IMG.zip, booting into the bootloader (phone off, hold volume down and power buttons), and installing it that way.
You can also open ROM Manager to flash a recovery too. Easier that the PB31IMG.zip way, but they both get the same thing done. If you have an SLCD screen and you have the wrong recovery, when you go into recovery the screen will be black with two white lines down the sides, from what I remember.

AH.... .. OK... Don't know why I didn't catch that CWM... I think I have what I need, hopefully tonight after work I can try this out. If I recall I can see what LCD I have by the model number of the phone... I'll google that quick.
Ok so from what I am reading CWM 3x is not required for flashing ROMs on the Inc... I have it installed but it is version 2.x.. Do I have to have version 3x to flash Nil's 3.0 ROM?
It's not, well not necessarily...but for the 2.1/3.0 Sense ROMs ClockworkMod Recovery does need to be at 3.x.
You can go here to download 3.0.0.8, rename it to PB31IMG.zip, put it on the root of the SD card, and with phone powered off hold down volume down + power buttons to get to HBOOT and flash it that way.
There may be a flashable zip for this somewhere to update, but doing this through HBOOT is pretty simple too.

The green text of version 2.5.1.2 will change to orange for 3.0.0.8.

3. Download the 7.07 leaked radio; download the ROM; download the updated OTA kernel from a few days ago. Link is here.
If I go to your link that is the link for the OTA 7.07 Radio. The ROM I know where to get, but what about the kernel? Does that link install both the radio and the kernel? and then I just need the ROM?

If you're running a GingerSense ROM (NilsP's Ginger Business Sense is), then go here. The thread for this is here. It's a zip file, you flash in CWM like you did the ROM. Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik before flashing a kernel.
If you're running a Froyo 2.2 Sense ROM, you'll need a Sense kernel. An AOSP ROM needs an AOSP kernel. Kernel threads will tell you what version of Android it is compatible with. Flashing an AOSP to Sense won't work, and vice versa. I ran Tiny's Beta5 kernel with NilsP's ROM (here), and it worked great.
The radio link is only for the radio, so it only installs the radio. The kernel link/thread I am linking you to here is for only the GingerSense kernel, compatible with 2.3 GingerSense ROMs.
OK, I think I have it then. I was going to flash Nils •Nils Business GingerSense 3.0 so the link you provided for the kernel should be the one I need right? I have CWM 3.0.0.8 flashed now. I have the correct HBOOT, I also downloaded the OTA Radio, so I think I have everything I need.
One last question if you don't mind... If I use CWM to backup my current system, does it backup, (ROM, radio, and kernel) or if I wanted to go back at anytime would I have to flash the radio and kernel seperate? Have not used CWM to do backup and restore yet.

Yes, that link is the download for the kernel zip file. It'll prompt you to save it somewhere.
A ROM backup backs up the entire ROM and kernel, radio doesn't get backed up as it is completely separate from the ROM/kernel. Don't need to back up the radio. So if you needed to restore a backup, you'd do the wiping of user data and everything like you do before flashing a new ROM. Then when you go to Backup and Restore - Restore, you select your backup, and it brings it back to the point you made the backup (ROM and kernel).
So keep up to date backups, as if you have say a two month old backup that you'd restore, any texts/app info would restore to the point the two month old backup was made. Does that make sense?
Yep... thx for all the info and taking the time...
No problem! Glad to help!
just curious... do you know if the Clock App that is in the stock Android 2.2... Is that still in Nil's ROM? I had tried CM7 and it was not in there. I use that app all the time, so was just curious if it is in there. I like the Time, Alarm, Timer, Stopwatch all in the same App...
I believe it is, since the ROM uses HTC Sense. It also has the HTC Clock widget.
