Not sure if anyone has realized this yet, and I apologize if this is a repost, but I recently download power control plus from the market and tried out the "wi-fi tethering" control. It works without root and appears on the other device as "androidap."
If anyone was interested in this and doesn't want to root.
EDIT: just realized it won't fully connect. Oh well, sorry.

I've just been using Wireless Tether for Root Users. Works flawlessly with temp root. It just doesn't seem like their is any easy way to get tethering to work without temp root.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk
At least temp root is very easily done. I hope T-Mo doesn't catch on to root apps and starts charging.
I don't know how they could manage to charge for rooted tethering apps to work. I believe all they can do is continue throttling heavy users.

I wouldn't know either but sometimes phone companies get smart. They somehow got smart with BlackBerry's tether but it was a little different for BB phones than it is for Android phones.
At least I hope they just throttle at the most and they don't add extra charges. I'm a poor college kid as it is >.>....
They never did anything with the BB's I have had one on TMO and tethered for YEARs no issues slow as F*&k but it worked (internet at work is monitored). They never said anything.
I also wifi tether and use Pdanet now on my shiny G2.
I have Froyo on my Epic 4G with Epic Experience 2.0.0.5 instaled and I want to use Wired Tether, as for some reason on Wireless tether, if i have my phone plugged into my computer and wireless tether on... the battery drains faster than it charges and my phone dies... idk what causes this, anyway back on topic. Is there anyway i can use wired tether on froyo at this point? I get kernal issues when i try to use it. Also, im on the DK28 version of froyo.
you can use easytether or PdaNet

This should not be the case..is your phone hot when wireless tethering? if so it may not be charging due to the heat and I suggest placing it on a metal platform..

They're trials. Well, pdanet is a 10day trial or something and easytether blocks https websites
Or it might be the other way around lol
But I made a thread like this and basically, simple wired tether isn't available on froyo yet, but it works in 2.1 with some kernals

I bought easytether used it on 2.1 and reinstalled on 2.2 aka dk28 and still works with no issue.
I think it was $10, which is nothing since you have a pretty much a $400 phone 8)
To get access to htts sites you do need the paid version.
Sigh
I've done many searches on here for help
dk28 no matter what rom drops randomly my easy tether (paid) connection. It did not do this with DI18. I'm happy with the nebula ROM except for this. I know it's a dk28 issue of some sort, because I've seen others complain of this in another thread I cannot now find.
I hope someone can help me fix this without a reload, it is my ONLY issue, but it's a huge issue since my phone is my main internet source.
Thanks!
I ended up with the same issue on easytether, so eventually I gave up and had to use wireless tether
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
check your wireless and networks, on my device with dk28 it says tethering, just turn that on and it works, thats how im using it right now... see if that works for you
Thanks for the reply, but that causes the usual error67 that the hotspot gves you as well. Guess I have to go back to eclair.

yea or try turning on wireless tether and leave access control on so it does not kick you off, i had that issue when i went from tethering to wifi last night, or maybe it was turn off access control, it was a lil late sorry lol
I use PDANet because it works while your computer has an active wifi up. EasyTether does not work with an active wifi. I have licenses for both.

USB tether easytether pdanet Wireless which is faster?
When I first used PDANET I was getting 5mb down! I get 1mb with easytether...I switched due to driver issues with PDANET. I dont know for sure but maybe there is a limitation on the legacy usb driver easytether uses? Maybe sprint can see and has capped my data? I am using a rooted stock Samsung eb13 2.2 Hmmm...Dunno for sure but think the rom I had it on when it was 5mb was epic experience 1.5 which totally freaked out on me after I installed AVG antivirus and I kept getting popups speed is nice but at a price? Can anyone explain why initially it was 5mb now its not?

Iv searched and searched but can't find anything specifically answering my question in layman terms.....ok here goes, before I had my phone rooted I paid 30 for one month for the sprint hotspot on my epic and used it on my ps3 to play call of duty and it worked perfect. Then a co worker told me about the rooting and free tethering so I had it done and the phone works fine, its a little faster and all that jazz but the tether feature only works on certain devices (ipod touch and 1 of my laptops) but will not work on my ps3 at all. My question is why and how can I fix it.....
I can't say I've tried this, but here's a thread with some knowledgeable input that might help you along:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834373
Ok I'm lost. It has 2 downloads for epic and neither zip from doing the 3finger start up and zip from sd
It is because it is an adhoc signal. Some devices won't connect or even see an adhoc signal I believe the ps3 is a device that won't cnnect to an adhoc signal. You might have to contact sony on the specs though.

i understand the logic behind that but why does sprints stock "hotspot" work fine on ps3 but all "aftermarket" tethers do not
I've never used the sprint hotspot, but it probably transmits in infrastructure mode (like a wireless router), and not ad hoc mode (like wirelssly conncting two computers together without a router). The truth is, no ones been able to get infrastructure mode working on di18 (which is android 2.1, and you are probably running it if you didn't go to dk28, which is android 2.2).
Now, you could try going to dk28, but it can be buggy, and I don't think the wireless tether in infrastucture mode works perfectly either. So in otherwords, it might get complicated for you.
I have an xbox360, which also doesn't connect to ad hoc networks. So instead, I use a wired tether program, pdaNet (the free version). My setup is epic wired tethered to my laptop, then an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to my xbox. If you have a laptop that you can use for this setup, I highly recommend it. There's also probably less lag than with wireless tether since wireless has more latency than a usb cable.

If your Epic is running Eclair 2.1 and you're already rooted, then you're in business.
You need to flash the modified hotspot app that was ripped from the Vibrant (and modified for each of the Galaxy S series), and you're golden. After doing this, use the Sprint Hotspot app like usual with no need to pay the $30 fee, plus it's working in infrastructure mode (everything wifi friendly), not ad-hoc (some wifi friendly).

If your going to go back to stock anyway (2.1, not 2.2), just root/cwm and flash the existing MobileAP for 2.1, as that will work without having to pay the extra $30/month. The trouble you were having is that the way the hotspot feature works got changed in 2.2, so the zip for 2.1 that you flashed wont work correctly.
If indeed you are going back to 2.1, this will only work on an odexed rom, in other words, a stock rom (custom kernel is fine) or possibly a custom rom after running the odexer tool in the dev section before you install/use MobileAP.

Recently Tmobile finally started filtering their data and are attempting to prevent all users no matter the ROM or software on the phones from tethering their laptop to the phone.
As soon as you tether and try to view a webpage on your laptop, you will get redirected to a sales page, where TMobile tells you that you need to purchase an additional feature for $15 USD a month. This is outrageous considering you already pay for a certain ammount of data per month, and as long as you remain within that they are just being greedy and are nickle and diming us.
The workarounds / bypass are detailed here:

We ran into this problem several months ago but were using the LG Optimus T phone for tethering. It ran fine for a day or so and then we started getting the Tmobile message screen to upgrade. We had plenty of gigs left and couldnt figure out why we could no longer tether. We are heading on vacation next month and this will hopefully help us bypass Tmobile's junk. Haven't tried our Galaxy S2's yet so we may be worried all for nothing..
UPDATE: Tethering works great on the S2 thru Tmobile,.,,Hotspot does not. Got a screen on my phone for Tmobile to sign up for it monthly when I searched the Help link...laptop is asking for a Network Key to access the Hotspot...
Try the ClockworkMod tethering app.

You need a Virtual Private Network or VPN. I can't post links so you'll have to look it up yourself.
So I have a question for you guys...
I understand that I need to switch the user agent on my laptop when tethering, but what about when I tether to something like a Roku box or a Playstation 3?
The reason why only some people are having problems with the tethering is because T-Mobile is including hidden APN settings in the new software updates and the software on new devices. These hidden APNs helps T-Mobile detect tethering. Go to this thread to see what I mean, also you can PM the OP and he can tell you exactly what he had to do, I think he had to decompile the framwork, apk or framwork.jar one and remove them from there I can not remember exactly.
Edit:
GROGG88 said:
I will gladly discuss it here... Both Elegancia 3.0.0 and version B of my rom are using resources from 3.32.401.105 in order to achieve two functions:
1. Unlock APNs
2. Provide leedroid tweak compatibility
The only problem with this is the fact that they are no longer "true tmous builds". I refer to them as "franken-builds"... I have not gone through all the differences between framework-res, systemui, framework.jar, services.jar, etc... but I can tell you that certain small bugs have been reported with the xe build that others have reported as fixed in the official tmous version.
The APNs are written to apns.xml within the framework-res.apk. This is why we used XE components to unlock the APNs at first. You can distinguish what roms are built this way by the framework version:
TMOUS: 20120412.202737
XE: 20120321.232857
My unlocking mod is the stock TMOUS framework-res.apk, but it has the apns.xml from XE. This ensures that the rest of the rom stays in tact and that no bugs will be induced by mixed resources... I've also included this mod as an option during install on version A of my rom.

Just tested. It works on almost all of the UserAgents becauses Chrome/IE/FireFox.. Hell IPad even works. You should be fine for now. I hope they stick to this solution instead of going to more preventive measures because this is easily bypassed.. My Skype/Steam/Trillian/AIM/etc all still connect perfectly even without bypassing because it's only blocking Desktop useragents. The stupidest part of this is requesting the desktop version of sites like on the Google Chrome Android browser results in the blocked page as well.. :|

None of your updates have been from T-Mobile. All those OTA updates came straight from Google. One of the things that ended with the nexus s was that the carriers weren't allowed to really touch the phone at all. As such, T-Mo never sold it in their stores. You could get it at Best Buy, etc, but not at official stores.
I believe this only works if you bought the device from T-mobile right? since i can tether on my iPhone just fine (althought on 2G/EDGE) I can't confirm it with android though, but if they are ruling this all over the network we're gonna have a bad time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is with T-Mo-sourced devices specifically (as in, you got it at the T-Mo store or it has the T-Mo logo on the phone itself).

Hi all
Just want to know if the nexus7 can be tethered via BT and uses as a modem
Thanks andrew
Given that the N7 has no cellular modem, obviously not.
If you're asking if you can tether the N7 _to_ a phone and use the phone's cellular network, yes, as long as the phone supports Bluetooth PAN profile (Not the older DUN profile)
The GNex _supports_ this however Bluetooth teathering is still broken (please star this ticket if you want to see it fixed http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22369 )
Your much better using the wifi hotspot on your phone rather than bluetooth tethering.

BT tethering works great from my Galaxy S Showcase to my Galaxy Tab (both running AOKP).
I'm in a facility where we can't have rogue wifi signals, so bluetooth is the way to go. Additionally, the wi-fi eats up my battery, but the bluetooth isnt too taxing.

Indeed, I could run bluetooth tethering all day on my Nexus 1/ZTE Blade with minimal effect of the battery. That way I could just leave it on and my tablet used it as needed, much more satisfying.

So we can't Bluetooth tether the 2 Nexus devices? That is pretty lame. This is one of those areas I appreciate Apple for. All devices should come togerther seemlessly, bluetooth saves battery over wifi tether. I hope Google fixes this before my N7 comes.
The N7 can't tether data TO anything, it has nothing to share. But it can tether from something, personally it's tethering data from my SGS3 which tops out around 2mbps over Bluetooth, which I find more than fast enough.
Also, as a previous person has already mentioned WiFi tethering rapes the balls off my battery, Bluetooth does not and I can tether all day long without a care in the world.

It's worth mentioning that if you use wifi tether if you use auto update for apps over wifi it might rinse your data allowence. The thing I like about the Bluetooth tether is that you can switch on data tethering from the device which requires data - eg if your nexus 7 is paired, you can switch the data connection on and off from the nexus 7. Useful if you don't want to keep pulling out two devices.

You beat me to it. Bluetooth is lower power, is flexible, and your apps will not auto udpate which can be a huge problem for people with limited data plans.
I have a gigabyte per month, which is great, but I'm not updating most apps with it.

How's the BT tether speed compared to wifi tether?
As others have said, bluetooth tethering is the way to go. Runs all day long, is just as fast, and is easy to control. I can BT tether to my gnex as well as my razr without any problems (all through the stock UI, no 3rd party apps/hacks/etc), so I'm not sure what the earlier reports are regarding BT PAN being broken.

Mine worked once, then once both devices went to sleep and I turned the screens back on it quit working. Now it won't let me share my connection to my N7 from my Gnex. I have to use the WiFi hot spot which kills battery among other things. Any ideas? I want to leave it on on my phone all the time and just have to switch it on and off on my N7 when needed.
