[Q] Does the Tab have WIFI hotspot capabilities?

Hello! Just quickly popping in to ask whether or not the unbranded Galaxy Tab has the stock Froyo WIFI hotspot app on it (or if it has a custom app that gives the same capability)? I'm looking at using it as a phone replacement for a X10 with a bluetooth headset, and one of the primary things missing from the X10 is the WIFI hotspot capability. I'm not expecting blazing speeds, just the possibility to use the existing data plan on my phone contract for occasional surfing as well.

X10 runs 1.6, hence no WiFi Hotspot. (They started rolling out a partial 2.1 update a couple of days ago, so you may be able to upgrade, but there's still no wifi tethering in 2.1 unless you use a 3rd party app, which may require a rooted device)
The GT has 2.2, so does have WiFi Hotspot.

Yeah, but from what I've understood some vendors have chosen to disable the wifi hotspot app particularly, hence me asking. Couldn't find anything in the spec that mentioned the wifi hotspot capability.

Then you root your phone, download wifi thether for root users from the market, and use it anyway

Wifi Tethering to my phone

so ive got an evo. and i use my wireless tethering quite often. and when the galaxy tab came out, i tried to tether it to my phone, and i couldnt get it to work. i have no interest in a 3g or 4g connection for a tablet, atleast not now. so does anyone have any idea if i will be able to piggyback the xoom off of my phone?

It should work the same as any other wireless device. My wife uses her IPAD off my evo all the time.

have you tried tethering a android device to another android tablet? i tried it with a hero and an evo. couldnt get either to work.

I have done it with other android phones ( ie someone sharing my internet) but never an android tablet.

Which did you tether to what. HTC EVO, being designed for tethering has the proper wifi drivers to offer full infrastructure mode tethering. Some other devices, maybe the Hero, originally not being designed for wifi-tethering, only offered a certain kind of tethering that didn't work with some devices. IIRC this was fixed in the freely available Android Wifi Tether app. So if you tried to share your EVO's connection with the Hero, that should have worked. The reverse maybe not so much.
I tethered my HTC EVO to a Viewsonic G-Tablet with no problem so I don't foresee a issue with the xoom.

Your wifi tether program might not be working, I had the htc evo 4g and tether to the ipad, laptop, galaxy tab without a problem.

are you using an app or the native tethering btw? theres a few apps that only offer ad hoc wifi which isnt really "meant" for internet. It more of a device to device type thing. while infrastructure is internet to device and thats what you want from your evo. i think i explained that right, i havent slept for like a day. i got too freakin excited about preorder i couldnt fall asleep lol

I had that problem initially with the Viewsonic G-Tablet and with my Kindle. Change the wifi channel in the tethering app to anything but what it is, and try again.

Wireless tether, I've been able to have other android phones and an iPhone see it. For some strange reason barnacle won't show up on a scan with other wifi phones. It's probably going into a different mode that laptops can see but some phones can't.

I think you are right. Android devices can't wifi connect to ad-hoc connections, thus tethering doesn't work. However, if you have hotspot capability on your phone it might be different. Or even different tethering programs that don't do ad hoc. Do these exist?

I could wireless tether the Viewsonic Gtab (pre and post root) to my Evo using Fresh Rom and the included wireless tether. Fast and stable

I'm using the wifi tether app for root users from the android market. And yes it works great with my netbook, work desktop, home desktop, and even my ps3. As well as supplying a connection for a buddies iPhone. But when trying to connect the galaxy tab... nothing. It didnt even recognize it. I guess we will see in a few days. Cause this "will be a dealbreaker ladies" (for those that watch 30 rock)

[Q] I'm having WiFi problems with Xoom.

I like pretty much everyone else has at least 1 months Verizon 3G coverage that I do not intend to keep. Especially since I have a Rooted EVO 4G with WiFi tether, and Sprints unlimited Data....
But for some reason the Xoom will not FIND my EVO 4G WiFi. A colleage in an opposite office has a device (iPhone) which finds and connects to the EVO 4G WiFi hot spot no problem, but not the Xoom. It fails to even see it !!
Anyone else had this issue (tethering Xoom to a Cellphone WiFi Hotspot)
Anyone have any idea's on how to fix it? I have tried security settings, changing SSID, changing WiFi channels, changing IP ranges etc etc. Nothing has worked so far

Please, search before posting.
The xoom cannot connect to an ad-hoc network, like from your evo. Check the thread regarding tethering with Bluetooth instead.
There may be a fix but I don't think there is right now.

I haven't read all of the posts on this to narrow down the exact reason, but I can tell you that the Xoom can connect to your EVO. I have been WiFi tethered to my EVO 4G since last Thursday using the stock Sprint application.
For what it is worth ... by the way my EVO is not rooted.

As stated earlier, unrooted Xoom devices are unable to connect to ad hoc wifi spots. A good way to test if your phone is an ad hoc devise just flip by Mc Donald's, if your Xoom can see the free hotspot your devise is emitting an ad hoc network. (PS3'S and other similar gadgets cannot connect to ad hoc)
I can almost guarentee it is not your Xoom.

I read pretty much read every post on WiFi tethering (The forums actually do a search for you when you type the title of your new thread) and I was not happy that they answered my question. They are all variations of the same subject, but not specific to mine...
As it goes I have fixed the Issue. All it took was re-downloading the WiFi Tether application from the Market place and all is working. No idea why the Xoom couldn't see the WiFi network and an iPhone could but it's fixed now. So Bye Bye Verizon

In this order: try his method by redownloading the app, also try restarting the devices before the attempt. If this don't work verify that your atrix is not emitting an ad hoc network. If its not, exchange your Xoom.

Not having the same hardware might be the fundamental problem but this is what I suggest....
1) - Make sure you have super user permissions...
2) - Un-install and then re-Install WiFi tether... https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
3) - Start the WiFi tether app on your Atrix perhaps changing the SSID to something other than default, then search for the Hotspot on your Xoom.
Fingers crossed it will locate it, connect to it, and maybe it work...

What do you mean? The N7 is a WiFi only device. Or am I misunderstanding your question?

I have a solution, sell it to..no give it to me. LOL
I have tethered the N7 countless times. You use the wifi to search out porto hotspot you create on your phone, whatever it may be. Then connect.

The n7 is a WiFi only. Smartphones can tether because of their 2g/3g capability.

Nexus 7 is not a Wifi Device only, it also has a microUSB connector so it could tether via that one.
And anyway, even if it has wifi only and to be honest wouldn't have sense to tether to other wifi devices (since they could gather wifi from the primary sender..) but why they took us the option anyway? If I wanna, just for the lulz of it, block my smartphone from getting WiFi from the router, and do thethering from the nexus 7, why they have to cut out this option? :S

If not, I think you're misunderstanding how people commonly use the term tethering.
If I am wrong, you need to tell us, exactly, how you want to "tether".

I'm assuming he means the ability to use USB Tethering (as in, provide Internet to a device or computer, over USB, from the Nexus 7 and a WiFi). A bit surprised people haven't really heard of this option, but it is indeed missing from the Nexus 7.

Exactly.. it seems that noone knows about tethering FROM TABLET TO PC/OTHERS, when it is clearly an option in some scenarios.

Eh, doesn't really shock me. It doesn't really seem like a huge amount of people do that, at least compared to wifi tethering.
That being said, do tablets/phones normally have the option? Usually I see it having to be implemented after release by the community.
Edit: Opps, misread one of the links I put up.
Still some clarification other than "No tethering on Nexus 7" would've helped. There are multiple ways to do it.
Also, why not research before buying if it is such a big deal?

Non WiFi-only devices usually have it (my SGT7 had the option), can't really say if WiFi-only devices have it though.

OK I get what you're saying. But I fail to see in what instance I would want to tether (share the internet connection) from my N7 with another device via USB.
Would I tether from my N7 to my phone? My phone can use whatever WiFi my N7 is on. Not to mention my phone has 3G.
Would I tether from my N7 to my laptop? My laptop can use whatever WiFi my N7 is using.
Now, I could see the the reverse of both of those circumstances. If I had 3G but no WiFi, I would want to share the 3G from my phone with my N7. Or if my laptop was using an Ethernet connection and no WiFi was available, I would want to share the connection from my laptop to my N7.
I hope I'm just misinterpreting this whole thing and I'll be slapping my forehead when I understand, but from what I've read so far, that seems unlikely.

My only Question is WHY.. Nearly all if not all laptops in the past 10 years have had wifi built in. I think its not a option because it makes no sense to have another wifi capable device to usb tether a available wifi network when it can just get the signal itself . Likely stronger and more stable . faster then adding another hop thru data transfer .
My phone has usb tether built in with ICS .. You can use a app to enable what your looking for .I think pda net does it..

That is pretty much it. Commonly I see it as "reverse tethering" where someone wants to use the computers internet connection on the phone via USB connection. Due to lack of wifi/cell data connectivity, or to save data on their plan.

Yeah. Like espionage724 said, his SGT7 had it. I'm not entire sure, but I've never heard of stock android having this ability. I'd be willing to bet that the manufacturer put it in themselves.
Moral of the story: do your homework before buying.

I guess it would be useful if your wifi router was down so you could use your PC's internet access.
If implemented properly is should be faster for LAN file transfers (assuming you get good usb transfer speeds...obviously a PC on a gigabit LAN will crush wifi, so the usb 2 is the limiting factor...usb 2 is supposed to be a lot faster than wifi, but in practice, it does not always pan out).
I guess I could find a use for it. In our house 99% of the time only our tablets and phones use wifi. All of our fixed position devices are on a gigabit lan (media players, blueray player, HT recevier, wii, main PC, printer, even our laptop, which is really just the kitchen table PC now that we have a bunch of tablets). When I work from home I dock my work laptop on the LAN, and so does my wife. Wireless blows when there is a gigE jack nearby.

I really dislike how the Nexus 4 can't do simple things well

Such as staying connected to my WiFi, or my cellular data connection, or being able to reliably turn Bluetooth on and off. Seriously, these are the things that should just work. On every other phone I've ever owned I've never had a problem with any of these things, let alone all three.
Overall I like the N4 and the positives outweigh the negatives and I plan to keep it for quite a while. But I sure hope these basic things will be corrected in an update soon.

I can help you with that. There is a app that will make you life very easy, it's called "power toggles"

I have never suffered this wifi issue, i don`t think it is caused by the phone but by the router. My wifi connections are rock steady and i never loose connections.

I hate when ppl think their problems are affecting the world. I have 0 of the issues you report.
I use wifi and bluetooth all day every day. Nothing wrong with it at all.
Do a search, you'll find your boat is awfully empty. You need to look at your wireless set up and your bluetooth device is prolly junk.

Agreed. Try a factory reset on both phone and router. Also if it's a netgear router I've heard bad things.

Can you be more specific on how/when you get these errors? I'm not experiencing any of these problems on my Nexus 4 and I use both WiFi and Bluetooth regularly.

We can help you, but you gotta provide more info.
Rooted? Stock?
If so, ROM/kernel?
Also, what errors are you exactly getting? Or you can provide a logcat.
This has been the absolute best and fastest device I've ever owned or played with. Makes me sad when ppl aren't experiencing the same thing I am. So hopefully we can help you.

Seemed like phone was having issues staying connected to network, but it cleared up, so I'm guessing it was T-Mobile's issue.
Also, with Franco kernel and custom color settings and volume boost, this phone is near perfect.

I'm having the exact same issues. When attempting to browse the play store I constantly get the " cannot connect to the play store" and I have to hot retry several times before I can continue. This happens every 10 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy. Also when skiing any type of downloading on my Wi-Fi I get awful speeds. I'm talking an hour to download a podcast but it only taking my iPhone 5 approx 10 minutes to download the same podcast. Something is definitely wrong however I bought this phone from someone else so I can't RMA it so think I'm screwed.

You might want to try a different channel or something with your router if you are seeing disconnections a lot. Also is this happening on multiple wifi connections or just on your home one? With Bluetooth I don't really use it so cannot comment on it.

if u think the wifi's bad on the N4, you must have never owned a galaxy nexus. I'd sit a foot in front of my router and only get 2bars of WiFi with that phone:banghead:

For here the WiFi signal until it looks good on the phone, but no data transfer occurs. From what I've been reading this is happening to many people. I think google should be manifested.
If hardware problem until I change the router, but at least tell me what works. They are anxious to get the phone's SD reader to avoid confusion and leave this problem in WiFi. Just missing they release the next nexus without WiFi to avoid this kind of problem.

The problems I mentioned are all well documented here, with none having a solution.
Glad you're happy with your N4, don't take it as an insult if mine isn't perfect.

THIS i got a GS3 with a netgear router and the router is fine on any pc but SLOW on my phone and sometimes randomly drops.

I'm having the exact same problem with the connection having issues every two minutes, making games hard to play with connection errors. Are you certain it's a T-Mobile issue?

I have T-Mobile and my signal is rock steady. Call support and see if they are working on a tower in your area.
