Novice questions - Galaxy Tab General

Hello guys,
First of all Happy new year.
I just got a Samsung Tab and I am learning on it (how to ROM...etc...)
But since it is my first device (android) I would like some help from you
anywhere I can find some tutorials...help ?
what is ROm and what's the difference between ROM and Firmware
what is CSC ? is JPJK2 the latest version ? how ? where ?
thanks a lot.
Pierre

@Pierre. What country are you in, what mobile carrier do you use and what's the sales code on your phone? No one will be able to give you ROM version advice without these basic details.
ROM and firmware are the same thing, people use the names interchangably. The ROM/firmware is the usually seen as the PDA version thats on the device as this is the Android operating system. The devices also have modem software and the CSC (customer specific customisations). The modem code contains drivers for the modem (ie data and voice), WiFi and (afaik) bluetooth. The CSC contains vendor specific applications and mobile network connection details (eg. APN settings).
Have a look around in this forum and in the Samsung Galaxy S forums for tutorials / advice etc and enjoy your Tab!!
If I've given any bad information above, could someone who knows more please feel free to correct me!

How to Find your Phones Region for changing ROMs

Hi, I've had my omnia 2 (GT-I8000) for almost 2 months, and wanted to change ROMs as my friends have suggested. I looked into it and found that there are a wide variety of ROMs, depending on the region and the codes in the CSC, PDA, PHONE, sections.
these are the current Codes:
PDA: I8000JPJA2
CSC: I8000XSGJA3
PHONE: I8000XXJA1
the store that I bought the Phone from updated my Omnia to
win mo 6.5 ( CE OS 5.2.21883 Build 21883.5.0.73)
I wanted to change the ROM and heard that if the region of the ROM is not compatible with your phone, it won't work. so I would really appreciate any help and suggestions for good ROMs.
Please, if you give suggestions for Roms, or any programs that I have to Use, then please, please, provide the links to them, I would greatly appreciate it! A walkthrough would be nice too, I'm a Complete Noob when it comes to WM phones.
thank you very much.

[Q] Firmware Update

I saw a page about a firmware update at:
http://htc-linux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Leo/Wifi#Firmware
I have a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can answer. (I did search this forum and the developer one. Didn't find what I was looking for.)
Have there been any reported issues with the new firmware?
Does this actually upgrade the firmware on the phone (permanent, run just once), or just run a virtual firmware layer (update every build with it)?
Is there a change log showing what's been updated with the new firmware?
Who put out the new firmware? Was it HTC or a third-party developer?
Is there a file to revert back to original (if it is a permanent change)?
What's the deal with the free software firmware over at OpenFWWF? It's directly under the GNU section, but the outline columns make it seem like it's part of it.
Thanks for any help you can give in the matter.
Edit: Oh, and it's for HD2s, right? The Europe or American version?
This is all just observation take it for whatever its worth.
I Havent tried it as I use a modified kernal.
I am no dev but I dont think its permenant as Its for the android builds. I do believe that onces its included you wont have to keep adding it to every build.
Cant tell If it was from htc looks like its originally from broadcom themselves.
I found this http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/system/wlan/broadcom.git;a=summary
I think that maybe the base for the driver over all.
Hopefully some can shed some better light on the subject as you have great questions.
I am looking to see if i can find anymore info.
Anyone have any information on this?

Middle East Tab - will I lose phone function if I flash 1 of the roms on this forum?

Hi Guys,
I just got a Tab that was purchased in the Middle East last month. It already has the phone functionality.
It's still stock, I haven't even rooted it yet, but I plan to....
I wanted to ask if by putting one of the roms on this forum (after rooting it), will I lose the phone functionality?
Would that mean that I am limited to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933028 rom from Galaxyer if I want to retain phone capability?
Thanks in advance,
KG
Alterbridge86's Overcome ROM and Kernel has no Modem.bin included, which means your original is saved, so if you have phone calling prior you most certainly will not lose it using Overcome ROM (as long as its a GSM tab, ie. one with a sim card, but being where you are id imagine it is).
The ROM can be found over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932082
I also humbly suggest this guide for Installing the ROM, of course you would be directed to the same from the ROM page anyway
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973402
Good Luck and make sure to read, and re-read, all instructions first to make sure you get it all right
Hi
You will lost arabic support only!
If you are looking for updating with official rom that support arabic:-
http://hotfile.com/dl/109292691/6006995/P1000JPJM5.rar.html
pw : samfirmware.com and you have to flash with Odin
or I suggest you:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933028
supported for some theming....
Thanks Galaxyer and corodius!
So I am only limited to the Overcome Rom and Galaxyer rom only?
I am just trying to know if I can only install certain ROM's that will allow me to retain phone functionality...
Many roms will have phone function. I think only two were recommended to you because they have arabic language. If that's not a concern, flash any.
So will this work with a South Korean Tab Model Number SHW-M180S? I have a sim card and phone capabilities, but want to install Overcome.
Thanks!
You can flash the Overcome rom and kernal. But it doesn't have Korean language.

[Q] Code of region

Good nigths,
I have two cuestions, I had to flash my omnia 7 by various problems, so I read information and I installed to original rom of samsung. Now, mi omnia 7 have the german code and I need it to be spain due to need the aplication of network of samsung (appear configurations of spain). Where Can I set it? And it can create problems with updates of microsoft? Because I havenĀ“t recived the update of firmware 2424.12 of this month yet.
Thank you
You can't change it unless you flash a new ROM.
How about flashing a custom ROM? They are in the Omnia7 Dev section and I know for a fact miro's contains the HTC Connection Wizard which has a huge database of worldwide carriers, including Spain...

Tango on E900 and still no Internet Sharing !

Hi everyone.
I want to ask this because I didn't find any clear and direct answer to this question (in the awfully long threads about this topic).
I don't own an Optimus 7 directly, I am talking about my girlfriend's phone.
Long ago I heard about the possibility of enabling Internet Sharing on LG E900 Optimus 7.
I already know that a particular driver or firmware update is required for it.
Today I managed to update the phone to Tango using Zune. Still I don't receive any LG firmware upgrade ...
These are the firmware numbers I read :
OS Version 7.10.8773.98
Firmware 1.1.2.10
Hardware 1.0.0.0
Radio 1.1.2.10
Hardware radio 0.3.5.0
Bootloader 1.5.1.0
My girlfriend wants Internet Sharing but she won't let me reset her phone. She doesn't want to lose any message or app or photo or video or information she stored so far.
So the question is :
is there ANY WAY to flash the driver, to flash the firmware, to flash what's needed into this phone to enable internet sharing without losing any data ?
I already enabled the Internet Sharing option using registry editor, but the driver is still missing. "There is a problem with the current settings" message appears when I try to enable it.
any dev could help me ? I wonder if the cab sender isn't enough to send this driver to the phone.
can somebody give me a clear answer except for "you must reset the phone" ?
Currently I am downloading the firmware 'LG-E900AT-00-V10g-222-10-SEP-29-2010+0_DZ'
Can I flash it without losing all the informations on the phone ? (the real question is : the firmware will reset the ROM too ?)
Waiting for your answer.
Have a nice day.

Good to you that you made update on 8773 on OPN firmware, but my opinion reason why you be luck to update on 8773 is because you do not have OPN firmware that bring Internet Sharing.
My Story:
Couple months ago, Zune SW pop-up with notification for new update, at the end my phone was able to act as access point.
To be able to do that on your phone, you will need 1.1.9.10, in between there two other firmware 1.1.4.10 & 1.1.6.10.
I am suspect that reason why I cannot update on 8112 and 8773 is this firmware.
Please if someone with 1.1.9.10 OPN firmware has same problem, please describe here.
Currently my firmware is LG-E900_V11i_Final-jan-27-2012-2250-7720, as I can see this firmware does not exist under stock ROM for Optimus 7. In any case bring ICS to LG Optimus 7.
Cheers.

Can you send me the cab updates for these firmware ?
And the most important question is :
what happens if I send the wrong cab to the phone ?
superbump !
hey
that is the reason of silly support for LG E900, no custom roms etc.
Because Users don't know what they have in own phones.
There is internet sharing since mango.
Serach in setting: internet acces!

You didn't really read all my topic, didn't you ??
What are you saying is wrong.
Tango didn't bring the internet sharing.
A firmware update that was not received by everyone bringed it.
The firmware update changes accordingly to the brand of the phone.
I forced the 'Internet Sharing' option to show up by using WinTT.
When I try to enable it as I already said a "There is a problem with the current settings" message appears.
The real question is still this :
I bought my Optimus 7 in France, and I discovered later that it was 'OPN' branded. I used it with Vodafone since the beginning. PHERAPS this is the reason I didn't get the firmware update.
So what happens if I try to manually flash the cab 'LG Optimus 7/E900 - OPN NEU branded 1.1.6.10 - November 7th 2011' over :
OS Version 7.10.8773.98
Firmware 1.1.2.10
Hardware 1.0.0.0
Radio 1.1.2.10
Hardware radio 0.3.5.0
Bootloader 1.5.1.0
???
Hey,
Same history for me but my Firmaware and Radio are different.
OS Version 7.10.8773.98
Firmware 1.0.4.10
Hardware 1.0.0.0
Radio 1.0.4.10
Hardware radio 0.3.5.0
Bootloader 1.5.1.0
Thanks and sorry for my english!
for what its worth, I know the german vodaphone branded rom has it, and its works great, for me its been enabled since i've had the device.
