[Q] Cannot install busybox, nand unlock required?? - Galaxy Tab General

Dear Community,
I have been trying to root my Galaxy Tab for few days already (Yes, few days).
I followed all the instructions on the forum and used the z4root which I downloaded from the forum.
The device indicated "rooted" then I installed the Titanium Backup but an error saying "Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again."
Therefore, I downloaded the BusyBox installer from the market and try to install the BusyBox. Now there is an error installing the BusyBox.......
It says "Your phone is rooted, BusyBox was not found!"
below that there is a detailed message in red saying "The application failed, either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount. Please use logcat at this time, get it from the market, to send a log to StericDroid."
I have no clue what is wrong now and I cannot find anything about nand unlock for the Galaxy Tab. I needed to do a carrier unlock so bad....
Please help!
Here is my galaxy tab's information:
Model number: GT-P1000
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: P1000XXJID
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 root sep-53 #1
Build number: FROYO.ZHJK1
Thank you very very much!

Do you have the "Superuser" application on your Tab? If so, try running it and check that Titanium is not disallowed.
If you don't have the app, chances are you are not rooted correctly - try SuperOneClickRoot.
If you do have Superuser, and Titanium is allowed, try clicking on "Problems" in Titanium and allow it to install its own version of BusyBox.

Dave

I have the "Superuser" appz installed but under the Apps, there is "No apps in list".
I also tried the Titanium "Problem?" solution before, it doesn't work. It downloaded the Busybox but indicated "installation failed, see web page for troubleshooting steps."
Should I "unroot" the device in z4root before I try the SuperOneClick Root?

I have had the same problem before. Install Busybox from inside of Titanium backup. Click on "Problems? " in the lower right hand corner of Titanium and allow it to install Busybox. Then you must select restart Titanium for the change to take effect. For some reason Titanium does not like the version of Busybox that is found in the market.
Edit: Sorry it looks like you have already tried that. I too recommend rooting again with SuperOneClick.

You could try to root manually if all automated methods fail: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859712

Thanks very much for all the replies!
I will give it a try tonite and post the result later~

Ah....
It doesn't work for me!
Tried the SuperOneClock method and also tried the manual root method.
Both not work for me.....
I am still concern about a "NAND unlock" is needed for my Tab.
I posted the log message from the SuperOneClick here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10373454&posted=1#post10373454

if you use z4 root method be sure you use the permanent root option not the temporary root. busybox,at least on my tab, would not install with only temp root access.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App

Yep, I used the "Permanent Root" not the "Temporary Root"
It is rooted by using z4root (that's what it said in the busybox installer) but cannot install Busybox.....

Checked the instructions for the z4root method, it mentioned:
With the absolutely beautiful ADB exploit, titled rageagainstthecage (ratc), absolutely ALL devices can be rooted. This is because it exploits ADB which all devices use. There is an issue though. Some devices have a NAND lock which does not allow you to write to the /system mount. Because of this, you can't copy su, sqlite or busybox to /system/bin.

The above highlighted sentences, probably is the problem which I cannot complete the BusyBox and su installation.....
Please.... does anyone know how to do an NAND unlock for the Galaxy Tab?
Greatly appreciated~

As far as I'm aware, there is no NAND lock on most Galaxy Tabs. That doesn't mean that yours doesn't have a NAND lock, as it may be something "new" that Samsung are rolling out, but it would appear that people having this issue are in a tiny minority. We need to ascertain if there is anything different about your device.

Thanks for your replied, Dave.
Any information I can provide to help ascertain my device's problem?

Since you've tried to root manually using RageAgainstTheCage, I suggest that a step by step description of everything you did, and the results would probably help.

FWIW, z4root v 1.3 doesn't work for latest tablet anymore. I did it using SuperOneClick then install z4root and root it again w z4root then I was able to install busybox.

I did this and it worked for me with no problems. Was able to install busybox from titanium backup. Hate to ask a dumb question but what now? What does rooting do for my Tab? Sorry I'm a total newbie.

Hello,
I am having real problems with my phone. I was trying to root the phone and I am stuck. I have S=off on the HBOOT screen, android version 2.2, software version 1.14.531.1.
I am not able to perform Visionary temp root, can't load clockwork recovery, and can't install Busybox. When I try SU within terminal, I get the error "must be suid to work properly".
When I try to install Busybox, I get the error "The application failed either becasue you device is not NAND unlocked or we were unable to remount".
I cant install ClockWork recovery..I get the error "an error occured while trying to run privilidged commands"
I have tried everything which is probably why I am stuck. I tried to force the update to 2.2.1 but won't work. The phone goes thru the motions of updating boot, radio, etc...However, still the same results are its done. THe phone stays on 2.2.
I have tried doing all of the root methods avail: Using Visonary, rage, etc... None of them will work.
Can anybody offer me advice to get root back so I can 1. install a recovery and then install another rom? I need a way to basically put the phone back to factory installed software and start fresh.
Try this worked perfectly for me. also make sure you have ADB installed and working properly before attempting root.

if you want to go back to stock follow the downgrade thread (linked in the thread about forcing the update) then follow the one linked above me here... it's faster than my forcing the update method (once you get radio s-off and the eng boot loader you can actually just flash the update.zip from my thread....)
EDIT: and in the future please post in the proper section or reply in the thread of the guide you're having problems with.
Thank you for trying to quickly help me. I started to follow the instrucions for downgrading and got stuck at the ADB Shell command. Within the Shell, I typed SU and got the following error "must be usid to work properly". Can you please offer any advice to get around this error?
Thanks,
Lance
to be suid you have to have temp or full root access. my sugestion would be to start the process from scratch. have you tried the visionary method?
i cant post the link to the other forum but its readily availible if you google it.
i didnt see the download link in the site i found so if you need the file PM me your email and ill send it back to you
Hello,
Yes, I did try Visonary and will not get SU working. The S=off is already showing. However, no matter what I do, I can't get SU to work. The device appears to be rooted but won't allow any advanced permisson comands to be used such as SU. I have tried re-installing superuser. that didn't help either.
launch the current version of SU you have on your phone and select settings scroll to the bottom of the page and under "superuser Information" you should see "Su binary Vx.x.x-xx) what is the version #?
Click on that and see if it updates the version if it does update try rebooting launch terminal and retry SU
Hello,
I checked the version of SU and did find there is an update. I tried to install and got the followng error 'An error occured and su was not updated. a zip file has been placed on your sdcard. please reboot into recovery and flash it".
The problem is that I can't get into recovery as I get the red exlimation mark. I can't find a way to install a recovery program because of permission issues.
Any further suggestions?
Please post questions in Q&A section.

How in the first place you get the s=off. In order to get s-off you need root! Is also known that to boot into recovery thou need to try several times before its locks! The better way to deal woth it is reading! The root method in the dev section help a lot! Read, read! That's the better way to learn! If you are in eng hboot and s= off there's a possibility that you only need to reboot into recovery several times! Other than that just read with patience!

My advice (without trying to hurt feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. You obviously don't really know your way around Android too well at this point. I would familiarize yourself with everything before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
WAAAY too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.

If you have S=Off on your phone already, your best bet would be to flash Clockwork recovery through FASTBOOT.
If you are unsure of how to do this, refer to this link from the Cyanogen Wiki:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Fastboot
The page will point you in the right direction for everything that you need.
Have the ROM that you want to install on your SD Card because FASTBOOT will probably not allow you to directly flash all the other partitions, but it will at least allow you to flash recovery, then boot into Clockwork and Install a new ROM.

I rooted my Tab using z4root by installing z4root from web. Once installed, run app and click root. phone will reset itself and when it boots back up, check apps for superuser app. If you see superuser app, Tab is rooted. and root doesn't go away with a system erase from SETTINGS/PRIVACY/ERASE ALL DATA. When you reset device, check apps and superuser app will install itself from root.
Put your tab in airplane mode and try again.
I used z4root successfully before, but since i updated to jmd z4root ist not working anymore. It just quits after a while and the tab runs super-slow afterwards. Rooting with super-one-click-root from a PC still works.
The exploit used by z4root doesn't work any more. For now, you can only root using rageagainstthecage exploit via adb (which is what the superoneclick does) or by flashing one of Roto's pre-rooted firmware images.
Super one click works on jmd

However i already installed superuser from market.

Just installing superuser from the Market won't do anything if you're not rooted. The latest firmwares don't work with z4root - you need to use SuperOneClickRoot as suggested earlier in this thread.

Using Click One for root new Galaxy TAB frimwork
Dear All,
I just updated my Galaxy TAB to the new frimware Adroid Froyo P1000JPJM5
And i used LickOne to do rooting and it works.
I have one comment. i tried to use root directly but i failed, the foolowing step i did it then it works fine ! this step is connecting the Galaxt TAB first to Samsung Kies , then disconnect and enable the USB debugging , then connect to the PC and run ClickOne . and it will work.
My Regards and thanks for everyone.
I used Z4root (before I found this thread) and now my tab is super ridiculously slow. How can I get back to factory to start over? I tried the wipe but I still see files there. I'm new at this. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.
Thanks
I'm not sure why the Tab would be running slow. Try unrooting and rerooting and see if that helps. I've got a VZW GT that I rooted a couple weeks ago and it works great.

Rooted Then Updated Then Lost Root??

I recently rooted my atrix with superoneclick then i accidently updated then i belive i still had my root until i went to install a 3d theme then my phone crashed and wouldnt get past the at&t screen so i had to erase everything now on my phone i still have "super user" in my app draw but i cannot side load apps did i lose my root? what do i have to do to sideload apps again ? and i guess re root my phone
Yes i am a newb i am comming from IOS and an iPhone 4 please dont flame
If you updated, you mean 4.1.57, this is what I did to re-root when I lost mine after updating and SuperOneClick wouldn't work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013931
Ok so i read that so basically i have to flash my phone back to default then root again?
Yeap, that's exactly what I did, but in that same thread, I think someone else outlined using aRoot to go over SuperOneClick.

Yes you may safely run aroot over superoneclick. Aroot is the recommended method because it cleans up a lot of things Superroneclick does.

Yup the aRoot script is used in the GladiAtrix and possibly the GingerBlur rom as well. Either way. SOC is crap, not meant for atrix anyway. aRoot was written specifically for the Atrix. If you want to update to 4.1.57 read through the retain root thread over in atrix development.
after update, i can still see "su" installed in /system/bin/
I am unable to use it, getting permissioned denied message, any solutions ?

This has been explained many times. updating kills root, even though you still have superuser installed. to retain root you need to use the script in the development section when updating from 1.26 to 1.57. flash back to 1.26 and try again.

Just downloading and installing SuperUser does not root a phone.

They're two different things. Root checker just checks if you have root. You need to root your device first. The kango root method seems to be the easiest. See the post and link just above yours by hovax
It worked!!
The Kingo Root proved to be much more beneficial and easier than going through all the steps! I'm so happy thanks to all of you for your help. :good::laugh:

[Q] UK Lg Optimus L3 E400 Rooting Problem

I have searched everywhere and I think this phone is unable to be rooted. I have discovered the UK version of this phone has a locked down bootloader that will not allow me to gain access any way I try. The phone is running Gingerbread 2.3.6, Build No. GRK39F, Kernel Version 2.6.38.6-perf+ and does not have a su.bin on the phone, nor will it allow me access to put one on it. I get permission denied when i try to remount the partition as r/w. When I try to unlock the bootloader, the phone does reboot but not into bootloader mode. This phone only has a hard reset. No other boot modes (just the factory reset). Chmod/chown will not allow me to change permissions. No matter which application I have tried, I am unable to flash anything to the device, since I can not gain root access. The adb root command gives me an error message as well "adbd cannot run as root in production builds." I know I may be a noob, but I have done a ton of research and have not found anything that will help me. Does anyone has any sort of information that will help me root this device? It would be greatly appreciated!
What programs did you use ?

No matter which application I have tried, I am unable to flash anything to the device, since I can not gain root access. The adb root command gives me an error message as well "adbd cannot run as root in production builds." I know I may be a noob, but I have done a ton of research and have not found anything that will help me. Does anyone has any sort of information that will help me root this device? It would be greatly appreciated!

are you trying to just root or flash custom rom too ?
did you try SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse.zip ?
did you try vroot ? in my signature (guide too)
if you install root browser it will install basic commands on your phone busybox sqlite etc
also check this out it might be your firmware does not support root and you might need to install v10b or v10c kdz

Yes, I have tried every app. The apps I use are pretty much irrelevant though, since there isn't a su binary to request permission from. without the su binary, no app can gain root access.

superoneclick does not work as it requests permission from the su binary, which does not exist. root browser does not work either, as it does not allow me to change permissions or ownership either. chmod and chown in linux don't work either. I get "permission denied" when attempting those commands. I an currently running on v10c, but I can not flash anything, including firmware, to this device either. There's no way to downgrade or upgrade. I get a parameter error when attempting to and then the kdz updater crashes and forces itself closed every time I have tried.
My phone model is LG Optimus L3 E400. I could fix this by change the default.prop file ro.secure=1 to ro.secure=0, but I can't write to that file. It's read-only and I can't figure out a way to change that.
I'm really about to just throw this phone out. I had no clue that some phones can not be rooted and would have no further research before buying this one.
try this

you didnt mention vroot was there any error message ?
when you installed root browser on first launch it asks to download little utilities did they install or come with any error ?
also try this super one click 1.7 and select exploit RAGEAGAINSTCAGE in right top corner (it has proven to root problematic e400's)
please update us on your progress
and worst case scenario we will get you to another version of stock and root then

I don't know what vroot did, but it actually worked. you don't know how long I have spent trying to get this done. so many other programs told me that rooting was complete and didn't actually do anything, that when vroot did, I didn't believe it. I thought i was just stuck with a p.o.s. that I couldn't customize. I really appreciate your hep. Thank you so much!
i did but glad i could help
