NFC & handling the back cover - Nexus S General

i'll like to see how they would develop the NFC, as it'll be a hard battle againts the long running Bluetooth.
it's becoming evident they needed a mainstream phone to test roll out the NFC technology and see if it's viable againts Bluetooth
the whole idea was to enable those quick payment and kiosks with autopayment using your cell phone.
I'll like to see that happen, go to a snack/soda vending machine and just press a button in your phone to PayPal the payment? or Google Checkout?

NFC anyway to test?
Is there currently any practical way to test the NFC, to see if it works or not?

If I set my phone on top of my debit card it reads it but all it says is unknown tag.

Non-sarcastic answer: No idea. I don't know of any implementations of NFC currently here in the states. The demo models sent out reviewers contained a card they could test NFC with, and it would have been nice if Google included that(or similiar) in the retail packages.

Any Debit card/Credit card that has the Blink/fastpay/paypass ability.
Also a U.S. passport and passport card works.

Not working with my US Passport... hm.
Edit: Okay, now this is interesting. I went to turn NFC off and on again to try again with my passport, and it reads "An error occurred" under the NFC in Settings/Wireless & Network Settings. It won't check it anymore. Um... I'd hate to find I have a defective NFC months later when NFC becomes more regular. Anyone else?
Edit 2: Rebooted, seems to turn on fine now, I can check/uncheck NFC in settings, however it's still not responding to my US Passport. Is it a specific type of passport? I guess my passport is pretty old, is there a newer version now with NFC data?
Now it's back to having an error. ... hm.

it's not, look at the zoomed out pictures from the first few posts, it's a light reflection thing on the camera

Is anyone else's NFC settings giving you "an error occurred" when attempting to check (turn on) the NFC in the Wireless & Network Settings menu? Mine is. I'm concerned. I don't want to find out I have a defective NFC months later when it becomes popular.
In general, when handling the back cover, are you supposed to avoid touching those two square-ish gold plates? Can do so damage the NFC connectors? I ask because I'm getting "an error occurred" message in the NFC option in the 'Wireless & Network Settings' menu, and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with inadvertently touching/damaging those golden plates when handling my back cover. Maybe moisture from my hands ruined the plates -- I don't know.
Anyone else getting "an error occurred" message when trying to turn on ("check") their NFC option?

this... will never happen.
also. where do all these websites get this google card where they can test their NFC ? all the reviews/previews had one. maybe you should try to find one of those.
or search the internet if there is any product that is NFC enabled.

In general, when handling the back cover, are you supposed to avoid touching those two square-ish gold plates? Can touching them or even exposing them to water do damage to the NFC connectors? I doubt touching them would do any harm, on the battery cover is just the antenna. Are you running a custom rom and/or kernel? I'm running cm7 and i tested mine on a credit card and it picked it up, unknown tag type though, but atleast I know it's working.

My phone is not rooted. I'm on 2.3.1 and running ADW launcher.
I don't have one of those fastpay credit cards, so I can't test it, but my main concern is the inability to even turn on NFC. Can anyone recreate this? I can only turn it on ("check") the NFC option after rebooting, but once unchecked, I get the error message when trying to turn it on/check it again. I get "an error occurred."
Possibly I have a defective NFC? Can anyone else recreate by checking/unchecking their NFC option? Would appreciate the feedback.

Just tried and I got the error after I checked/unchecked it a few time, then it wouldn't work anymore. I tried killing the nfc process and clearing the data but that didn't do anything, rebooted and now it's working again, scanned my credit card.

this topic reminds me of something....
we'll never going to get after market battery cover for the Nexus S due the NFC antennae build in, into all the back door covers
so, how do we get a replacement if it breaks?
LOL too used to buying after market stuff, that i've no clue what / where to get OEM parts

i do not have that error, i left NFC enabled on the phone, to see if i can find anything it can read. LOL

SIGH
I was walking down the streets in Hong Kong last night with my GF after a gongshow day of shopping (ugh) and I saw a restaurant with a sign proudly displayed on the front reading GOOGLE PRO STORE! CHECK US OUT ON GOOGLE! and it had the little orange tag which I am guessing would have had NFC info in it.....I was super tired at that point so I just kept walking, but after a few minutes I really wished I had just 'tried' it and seen for myself if the NFC actually worked
Epic Fail Me......

Thanks, Ikon8, for trying. My experience is exact - minus the actual scanning of anything (I don't have anything to test it with). This is slightly more reassuring. Can any one else also confirm similar experience with attempting to turn on/check the NFC option? Can anyone else also get the "an error occurred" message?

dual sim adapter for Magician?

anybody using it? I mean the one sold here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6413164595&category=43805&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1
I noticed the MDA Compact isnt listed, but I wondered if anyone bought and used it succesfully anyway
I have one very similar to this, which was bought for my Ericsson T68i- fitted nicely in there. Tried it on my JAM and no joy- the battery would not fit at all.
I believe some people have got it to fit (may be a another type).
Another option that I have seen is where you 'cut' the two sims and then they fit into a single size sim holder in any phone.
I really dont want to cut it :S
Yeah- i didn;t bother with that option. It supposed to be safe to do- as long as you purchase the dedicated cutters (!). They also provide you with a single sim adapter so the 'cut' sim can be use as normal. Gets too expensive though.
Im sure there was a thread here on this forum where dual sim adapter was the subject- try a search and see what comes up.
Also, you may want to check this link out for switching between sims:
http://www.wivit.com/products/SSS.shtml
... to be released very soon.
any able to fit this adapter into their XDA?
bump!
curious to know if this thing actually fits or is gonna waste my time and money...
and no.. i aint want to cut the phone! in any way.... drastically that is...
I've bought this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6414061281&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
This requires you to cut the sims; this was straight forward.
Some people say it doesn't work with UK 02 monthly sims; I have one, and an Orange PAYG, and they both work perfectly in the Magician.
It took quite a lot of repositioning of the little cut sims - the multisim works perfectly in a nokia because it puts pressure on the back of the sim to keep it in place. The magician only puts pressure on the very edges of the Sim, so I stuck a tiny bit of blue tak under the metal cover that covers the mini sims, to bulk it out tiny bit, and it works perfectly.
There are apparantely other very similar products eg
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67966&item=6416678468&rd=1
that use the "STK" menu (sim tool kit) to allow you to switch sims without switching to flight mode and back. However, I've read a review that says such STK cards suck power more quickly than the others. I can't comment - mine doesn't seem to use the STK menu, but it doesn't really bother me.
I also think that when ebaying, unless you expressly search for an STK card, you will get one that doesn't use it.
So: cutting is no problem, just measure twice, cut once etc.
Requires a lot of careful positing in the Magician, so it's best to have a spare phone (eg a nokia) to test it in to ensure it works first, so you know the problem isnt' the sims.
Also, hah hah, I found that removing the battery from the magician for more than a few minutes coursed a hard reset, of course, so ensure you backup before doing this procedure cus you'll have your battery on and off throughout.
Good luck y'all!
V
vijay pictures pls!
vijay555
are you able to post up pictures?
it would describe a thousand words!
i'm simple.. so cutting the SIM? (in what way)
and also with the double sim... there is no room at the mini backplate to store another SIM there...
pictures will definatley help greatly.
I'm afriad I can't post a picture of the MultiSim - I'm afraid to take it out of my phone!
The device is safe (in the phone), it's just that the Magician doesn't put much pressure on the top of the sim, only the edges (it slides in on "rails") so if I remove the battery I think I will loosen the contacts slightly. It works perfectly in a Nokia, and perfectly in my Magician, but it took a bit of trial and error and a tiny blob of bluetak underneath to keep the mini sims in place!
Have a look here for pictures:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6414061281&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Basic theory: you know the size of a normal sim, about 1cm high, 2 cm wide? Well, only a tiny bit (about 1cm x 1cm) contains the "chip", so you are supplied with templates that you stick over the full size sim, and then you trim it down. I used normal scissors and sliced carefully, a few mm a time to ensure I didn't slip and dice the chip!
But, follow the sticky template and you should have no problem.
Bare in mind, and don't be alarmed, but you WILL cut through some of the gold contacts! That's ok, they're there just for symetry, not function.
You get something called a "resume" card that allows you to reinsert your mini-sim into a dummy and use it as normal as a single sim - that works fine.
One tip that stopped my heart for a second: you stick the sticky template on, cut down the sim, and then DON'T forget to remove the sticker after! You can't see it (stuck to the tiny gold contacts), but of course you have to remove it
You will have no troubles if you carefully align the template and snip carefully. The guy on ebay will cut them for you using a "stamp" for free, but you have to send your sims to him.
I think it's only worth about 50p of circuitry, but he was the cheapest i found on ebay. I've posted another guy's ebay as well, but remember, STK will allow you to swap sims without switching to flight mode. Mine doesn't do this, but i just switch flight mode on and off to do the same thing. takes 20 seconds.
post again if you need more guidance!

jimjamz - sorry for taking so damn long to reply to your question!
I've been away during September, but I don't know how I missed it for SOO long.
I wrote my own today plugin that you can see at the top of the screen here:
The O2 graphic is a graphical representation of my current operator - o2. It also shows graphics for my other operator, Orange. If there's any other operator it shows the name of the operator or flight mode status.
Wivit's is a good choice otherwise

Vijay,
Will you mind if you can share this today plugin with others on forum ??

Yes, can u share it?
Guys,
I've got no ADSL at home, my ISP has screwed my line for a few days, but once it's back up I'll try to send a copy to anyone who PMs me (I'm at work now).
I'm not posting it generally on the board because it's not perfect or finished yet, so I don't want too many people complaing about it etc

Thanks Vijay, nice app.
This is a screenshot
code72 - hey, looks great! I'll get around to making it easier to use your own operator logos like my O2 logo, but it's far away from finished as a release product, so not right now
Are you using WDA?

Weak wifi signal fix

I have had the A7 for about 6 weeks and have loved it for the most part.
Especially with the latest 1.4 rom from the magnificent Dexter (thanks dude).
The only issue I have really hated is the weakass wifi signal. Standing 3 meters away from my linksys router I was only getting- 60dmb at best, which is pathetic.
During the first teardown I noticed there is an unused antenna which is taped underneath the mainboard. One of this reserved for future use kind of things. It is almost 5 cm longer than the pitiful white antenna. So of course I changed it to the blue.antenna.
Now I.am getting FULL strength wifi. The signal has improved by- 20dmb easily!
My router is on the 3rd floor and I now set a good.signal even in the basement.
Now I do love this unit!
You can see the white antenna in the Teardown post some other user did.
Just fyi.
I'm going to give this a try tomorrow

Very Easy, Bump
If you use a signal meter like wifi signal widget, you should see a- 20dbm improvement.
Where you keep your right hand while using your A7 makes a big difference as well.
The lower your righthand when in landscape, the less the antenna.is obstructed.
The fix was quick and easy. Some signal improvement was seen right away, but I'm waiting to test it out in other settings. Here at work I'm on the 10th floor of a well-built brick building and I'm been using wifi from a conference room on the 3rd floor. I can just barely use the browser, but the refresh is very slow. Still, an improvement.

How would it? All you are doing is using the longer wire which was previously unused... Its kinda like putting tin foil on your TV antenna.
I would assume that the better wifi signal would improve battery life if anything.
I did see better signal strength when wireless tethering from my Evo, Will test more connections this weekend
Just finished the swap take less than 2 minutes literally. Easiest mod ever!
Easy to do, but didn't help in my case
I use my A7 on my home network and the furthest point in my house is about 100' from my router.
Without the mod I usually can get all 3 bars on the A7 wi-fi indicator to light at the furthest distance. W/ the blue antenna I got 0-1 bar to light. I switched it back to the white antenna and it works much better in my case.
I didn't try it w/ BT, but BT works OK for me w/ the white antenna.
I noticed the same for mine aswell wasn't testing the signal it self just what the a7 told me with the icon and mine was better with the white. Any one know what the real purpose of the blue one is, the future sim card slot??

I would suspect that it was there for SIM provisions as the original version of the board was fully set up for GSM. Probably just a relic of the old design.
buy.com advertises the sim card slot, it would be cool if we could just send our a7 to elocity and get the new screen put on it when it comes out dont see why not.

I noticed the same issue, so I dug in a little deeper and it turns out that it's the application's fault...or maybe some network apps have issues working correctly with the EA7. Nonetheless, I finally found 1 network application that DOES work with the AE7, and appears to give accurate readouts.
Tha Application is called Network Info II ...and it's free.
www . appbrain . com/app/network-info-ii/aws.apps.networkInfoIi
In this app, once you select WiFi, you will see a refresh button(that works).
Instead of -60 dBm when 10ft from my router, I see -30 dBm to -40dBm...depending how I'm holding it, etc.
Interestingly enough, by using this refresh button, I was finally able to see some differences in signal strength based on the way I was holding the device. For me, it seems like the device prefers to be held on the left or bottom side for the best network performance(usually 5-8dBm stronger signal)...which works out perfectly for a right hander. Also noticed that pointing the back side or right side of the device at the wifi source seemed to improve signal strength...of course individual results may vary...especially since Im pretty sure I'm radioactive, lol.
As soon as I find a microscopic torx, t-4 I think, I will disassemble my device and do some comparison tests with both antennas, and look at possible re-routes of the antenna itself, which might improve wifi performance even more.

Companies are usually not geared for this type of service commitment level. However...after the new device comes out, and the old devices arent in the marketplace, and if your unit is still covered under some warranty, and if your unit "mysteriously" stops working ...your warranty replacement unit will probably be the new one.
I just know they would replace a screen if it breaks why can't they just put the new one in and charge me?
The idea of it all sounds good.

[Q] Network Showing "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@" on Lock Screen

I just got my microSIM yesterday to use in my Nexus 4, I rang my carrier (EE) to get my mobile number transferred to my new microSIM. A short while later I got a text to delete the message and reboot the phone, my SIM was then connected but where it says the network name on the lockscreen it says "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@" instead of "EE". I have took a look in the status settings of the phone and it displayes EE fine, as well as my mobile number etc.
Here's a screenshot:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7f2AVggTWvtLWowQUpOZHVSd2s
Now I don't have any issues on the network, everything works fine, it's just I'm a tad OCD and it is driving me nuts seeing this on the lockscreen. I've tried resetting the Nexus 4 hoping it would fix it but it is still showing that name.
Any ideas folks?

Dude i have the exact same problem and have just made a thread about the same thing LOL. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997726
Got a new micro sim to replace my normal sim from orange and activated it yesterday. It shows as @@@@@@@@@@@@@@ on the lockscreen and notification bar.
I have tried my wifes micro sim for her s3 and that displays it fine as EE.
I have asked orange to resend me the text and also reset my phone but its still the same.
Orange are sending me another sim out to try but i dont know if it will work...
This is a strange one.
I have also put my om card in my wifes s3 and it displays as EE in her phone.
It must be some sort of compatibilty isssue between the new micro sims and and the nexus 4 =/
Very strange indeed.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.. The lady I spoke to at Orange said that she would have to select Galaxy SIII on her system for them to send me a microSIM, I wonder if it will be any different if they selected the iPhone 5 for example. I don't know, it really is strange!
Does your microSIM come with that "quicktap" functionality? Maybe the NFC chip in the microSIM has something to do with it? Probably not though.. Please keep me updated, especially if you find a solution for this.
Also, are you on Google+ by any chance? Here's a link to my profile, it may be easier/faster to communicate over there, I don't know

I think I know what the issue is.
Are you using nexus 4 without case? Single handed operation?
If so what happens is your palm touches the touch screen on the side by default due to curved glass and thin bezel. This reduces touch sensitivity.
Try keeping the phone down and try.

Just call your Provider and he will normally send you a new one for free.

Got a link please?
I have the exact same issue, I'm using the micro quicktap Orange SIM from my S3. I guess to deduce the problem, I would have to try a normal micro Orange SIM, will give that a try when I get home.

Please do report back with the results. I have also got the micro quicktap Orange SIM, I tried turning NFC off on the phone to see if that would make a difference (if there was interference between NFC chips on the SIM and handset) but made no difference whatsoever
What is suposed to be showing? Could it be like your settings are set to hide some information?

It's meant to be showing as "EE", I think the only way to edit/remove the information is by rooting the device, which I do not intend to do.
Im 100% sure its the quick tap sim thats causing the problem.
My wifes normal micro sim displays it just fine...
Just to chip in, i got my normal sim changed to an nfc quick tap sim for my GS3, on the normal orange rom, it just came up with EE, however when i booted into CM10 it would display either @@@@@@@@@@@@ or [email protected]@@@@@@@@@@ which i assume is the distinction between orange and tmobile.Naturally i just it was because EE was new and i was on a custom rom, that it didnt quite have the correct apn settings built with CM or somthing.
So when i got my N4 it now displays either [email protected]@@@@ or [email protected]@@ again am sure thats the difference between the two networks, however i have no idea why it does this, or how to change it. Everything still works as it should, i did change the apn settings to EE's instead of stock orange (just incase that made a difference, but also am pretty sure i get better H+ signal but that might just be me) I guess the only thing it could be then is because its the NFC sim card but i dont think i can be arsed to call orange to get them to send me another Sim card
After six or seven phonecalls, explaining the situation, they still send me microSIMs with "quicktap technology". It is infuriating to explain myself everytime and they claim they'll send me one without quicktap but they send me one with quicktap anyway.
Has anyone received a microSIM without quicktap yet?
Not being funny, but why does this bother you, as you can see from my post, i too have the @@@@@@@ but it doesnt affect the phone, and if barclays/orange open the quick tap app to more than just the GS3, then you will be pre-prepared.

Problem with "Knock on"

Last night i left my phone in working condition but today when i woke up in the morning and turned it on, it started to open up apps automatically and began to touch anywhere it want despite where i wanted to touch. I restarted it 2,3 times and it worked fine. Then when i tried to turn it on through Knock on, it wont turn on. It turns off pretty well but dont turn on. I backed up all my data and did a factory reset but i still got that problem. Please help me out with this issue. Is it hardware or software i cant figure it out. I searched online and one of thread mentioned about testing screen so i tested it through QuickMemo and found out that a little strip was unresponsive(maybe this is the reason of Knock on failure). Again i am not sure if its a hardware or software issue. Please tell me if it can be sorted out through software way. Your help is really appreciated !!
P.S. QuickMemo image is also attached below

I wish I could help more, but I'm only guessing. From your Photo, it does appear to be a hardware issue, but if you don't mind going through it all, you might try doing a Hard Reset (AGAIN, sorry..) and see if that fixes it. It's very possible that a Hard Reset will cure the problem. Only thing is you will loose all of your data, so be sure to back it up and restore it.
I know that's a long process, but it would help you figure out if you need to send it in for repair or not. Also, likely LG would have you do the Hard Reset as part of their diagnostics before they had you send it in to them anyways.
You can also use THIS METHOD to return to stock and see if that clears the problem. If you still have that strip that does not respond, then it's likely a hardware issue.

Thanks a lot. I went through diffrent threads and found out that many of LG users had this specific issue and they call it "Ghost Touch". Many of the users recommended their own techniques some of them were really weird. like one guy told to electricate the screen using a little thingi that comes out of a cigarette lighter (i know, weird) but many were claiming that it worked (again, shocked). Some of people told to open up the phone's back and place a two sided tape on LCD connector(yet again many of them claimed that it has worked well for them). But being a technical person i dont believe in these weird and illogical methods. What do u suggest? should i try one of these or not?
P.S. I am from Pakistan and you can't claim warranty to LG from Pakistan so sending my phone to LG for a repair is off the books
another thing.... i am running Lollipop FOTA at the moment. Will the hard reset also change the version to the stock version that came out of box? i.e JB

Both of these MIGHT work. I personally would not shock my phone to try to fix it though. The tape thing might work because over time, the connections inside the phone can become loose. The tape is simply pressing the connections tighter. I have had this issue on laptops, and it might relate to your problem, IF it is a hardware issue.

If you Hard Reset, it will reset to the current version installed on your phone. So, if you've used FOTA to update, you will refresh back to the FOTA version you have updated to, not back to the original stock version when phone was new.

What I'm guessing they mean by the tape thing is finding the spot where the connection is not good, and using a piece of tape to put pressure on the connection when the back is placed back on. I don't have any way of knowing where that spot is. If it were my phone, I'd open it up and start putting light pressure on different spots to see if the screen starts working right. If/When you find the spot, place a small piece of tape that will apply pressure there when the back is placed back.

Poor wifi connection after screen replacement

Hey,
So I had my screen replaced from a shop up in Vaughan Ontario which they did a pretty good job however when I got home I relised that I had really poor connection to my main wifi router. I take about 5 steps away and it disconnects. I also have a wireless access point at the back of the house that my phone cannot even see so it switches to LTE. My screen was cracked for a week before I took it in and my wifi was working normally.
I took it back to the shop today and they had a look at it for an hour, a couple hotspots popped up but at max were 50%. They told me to make sure the plastic backing was seated properly?? I went back home and same issues. So I emailed them stating they need to resolve this. I dont even know when I can make it back since im somewhat out of the area and I was doing this on my days off. I also attached these pics to show the difference on my phone and my mothers phone.
Main Wifi - Konowaluk
Access Point - Eurotrash
My Mothers is the telus Moto
Sorry for the pic size.

I haven't taken my Moto X Play apart but it sure sounds like they didn't seat a ribbon connector or the actual main board has been dislodged in the housing. I used to have a Moto Atrix HD and there were mods to put a bigger battery in that was miniscule thicker but it was just enough to sometimes screw up the internal antennas from making a good contact from the main board to the housing.
It sure does suck for you though, as your going to have to pursue them for a fix.
Hopefully they will stand behind their workmanship and not give you grief over this. Good luck in getting it sorted out.

Well I confirmed at work that my phone cannot find any of my work wifi spots which is a big issue so I told them I'm dropping it off tomorrow. They told me to make the plastic back is seated properly and x play does not have a wifi antenna. Is this true? I told them I don't know what a plastic back has to do with a wifi signal.
Sent from my XT1563 using Tapatalk
Of course it has. Just remove the plastic back and you will see a few metal strips riveted to the frame. These are antennas. If they disconnected one while taking the device apart it's likely the forgot to connect it again properly.
Every device offering WiFi has antennas even if you don't see them. Antennas can be invisible or part of the exterior design. Google antennagate.
Tell them to fix it. The Moto X is screwed not glued so no big deal for them.

Well thats what im thinking, so I actually email and told them that. Will drop it off tomorrow and pick it up Friday afternoon. Should give them enough time to figure it out. If not im tempted to take it somewhere else and flip them the bill.
They couldn't figure out what the problem was so I lucked out and through their partner they were able to swap me with a new device. So in the end I'm a happy man.

Hello I have the same problem here, mine X play is the XT1563 and the screen was replaced and now I am almost without wifi, it only connects if I place the phone about 5 cm of the router.
I even buyed a new backseat cover with a new antenna and nothing.
Looking better I found that one of the metal covers in the motherboard is smashed, maybe there are components in short circuit?

I tryed installing TWRP, and I think I erased the data and installed Android 7, and same thing only works about 5cm from the router, how can I make a network reset?

I have the same problem. If I place the phone right next to the router, I can get a signal.
Can anyone point out which is the wifi antenna? I have opened up the phone, but can't figure out which is the wifi antenna connections. I checked out a few youtube videos on screen replacement. But none seem to talk in detail about the wifi antennas.
Edit1: In my case, the phone belongs to a relative. I ordered the replacement screen from ebay and she had some phone repair shop do the replacement. After she noticed the poor wifi. When she reached out to the phone repair shop, they gave her some BS that the new screen is not from original manufacturer or something like that. This is when I started searching on the web and came to this thread.
Edit2: My case is a bit more complicated. It looks like the guys who tried to replace the screen did a really shoddy job. Looks like they might have done some bit of soldering, because they likely twisted some connections or broke something. Attaching some pictures. They had absolutely no clue what they were doing. But incredibly the phone mostly works. Except for wifi everything else works.
Thanks,
Vishnu Rao.
