dual sim adapter for Magician? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

anybody using it? I mean the one sold here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6413164595&category=43805&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1
I noticed the MDA Compact isnt listed, but I wondered if anyone bought and used it succesfully anyway

I have one very similar to this, which was bought for my Ericsson T68i- fitted nicely in there. Tried it on my JAM and no joy- the battery would not fit at all.
I believe some people have got it to fit (may be a another type).
Another option that I have seen is where you 'cut' the two sims and then they fit into a single size sim holder in any phone.

I really dont want to cut it :S

Yeah- i didn;t bother with that option. It supposed to be safe to do- as long as you purchase the dedicated cutters (!). They also provide you with a single sim adapter so the 'cut' sim can be use as normal. Gets too expensive though.
Im sure there was a thread here on this forum where dual sim adapter was the subject- try a search and see what comes up.
Also, you may want to check this link out for switching between sims:
http://www.wivit.com/products/SSS.shtml
... to be released very soon.

any able to fit this adapter into their XDA?
bump!
curious to know if this thing actually fits or is gonna waste my time and money...
and no.. i aint want to cut the phone! in any way.... drastically that is...

I've bought this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6414061281&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
This requires you to cut the sims; this was straight forward.
Some people say it doesn't work with UK 02 monthly sims; I have one, and an Orange PAYG, and they both work perfectly in the Magician.
It took quite a lot of repositioning of the little cut sims - the multisim works perfectly in a nokia because it puts pressure on the back of the sim to keep it in place. The magician only puts pressure on the very edges of the Sim, so I stuck a tiny bit of blue tak under the metal cover that covers the mini sims, to bulk it out tiny bit, and it works perfectly.
There are apparantely other very similar products eg
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=67966&item=6416678468&rd=1
that use the "STK" menu (sim tool kit) to allow you to switch sims without switching to flight mode and back. However, I've read a review that says such STK cards suck power more quickly than the others. I can't comment - mine doesn't seem to use the STK menu, but it doesn't really bother me.
I also think that when ebaying, unless you expressly search for an STK card, you will get one that doesn't use it.
So: cutting is no problem, just measure twice, cut once etc.
Requires a lot of careful positing in the Magician, so it's best to have a spare phone (eg a nokia) to test it in to ensure it works first, so you know the problem isnt' the sims.
Also, hah hah, I found that removing the battery from the magician for more than a few minutes coursed a hard reset, of course, so ensure you backup before doing this procedure cus you'll have your battery on and off throughout.
Good luck y'all!

vijay pictures pls!
vijay555
are you able to post up pictures?
it would describe a thousand words!
i'm simple.. so cutting the SIM? (in what way)
and also with the double sim... there is no room at the mini backplate to store another SIM there...
pictures will definatley help greatly.

I'm afriad I can't post a picture of the MultiSim - I'm afraid to take it out of my phone!
The device is safe (in the phone), it's just that the Magician doesn't put much pressure on the top of the sim, only the edges (it slides in on "rails") so if I remove the battery I think I will loosen the contacts slightly. It works perfectly in a Nokia, and perfectly in my Magician, but it took a bit of trial and error and a tiny blob of bluetak underneath to keep the mini sims in place!
Have a look here for pictures:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6414061281&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Basic theory: you know the size of a normal sim, about 1cm high, 2 cm wide? Well, only a tiny bit (about 1cm x 1cm) contains the "chip", so you are supplied with templates that you stick over the full size sim, and then you trim it down. I used normal scissors and sliced carefully, a few mm a time to ensure I didn't slip and dice the chip!
But, follow the sticky template and you should have no problem.
Bare in mind, and don't be alarmed, but you WILL cut through some of the gold contacts! That's ok, they're there just for symetry, not function.
You get something called a "resume" card that allows you to reinsert your mini-sim into a dummy and use it as normal as a single sim - that works fine.
One tip that stopped my heart for a second: you stick the sticky template on, cut down the sim, and then DON'T forget to remove the sticker after! You can't see it (stuck to the tiny gold contacts), but of course you have to remove it
You will have no troubles if you carefully align the template and snip carefully. The guy on ebay will cut them for you using a "stamp" for free, but you have to send your sims to him.
I think it's only worth about 50p of circuitry, but he was the cheapest i found on ebay. I've posted another guy's ebay as well, but remember, STK will allow you to swap sims without switching to flight mode. Mine doesn't do this, but i just switch flight mode on and off to do the same thing. takes 20 seconds.
post again if you need more guidance!

Now that would be cool.

jimjamz - sorry for taking so damn long to reply to your question!
I've been away during September, but I don't know how I missed it for SOO long.
I wrote my own today plugin that you can see at the top of the screen here:
The O2 graphic is a graphical representation of my current operator - o2. It also shows graphics for my other operator, Orange. If there's any other operator it shows the name of the operator or flight mode status.
Wivit's is a good choice otherwise
V

Vijay,
Will you mind if you can share this today plugin with others on forum ??
Amol

Yes, can u share it?

Guys,
I've got no ADSL at home, my ISP has screwed my line for a few days, but once it's back up I'll try to send a copy to anyone who PMs me (I'm at work now).
I'm not posting it generally on the board because it's not perfect or finished yet, so I don't want too many people complaing about it etc
V

Thanks Vijay, nice app.
This is a screenshot

code72 - hey, looks great! I'll get around to making it easier to use your own operator logos like my O2 logo, but it's far away from finished as a release product, so not right now
Are you using WDA?

Car cradle with build-in FM transmitter

Does anybody have any experience with this cradle? Would you please share it with us. I'm especially interested in FM transmitter quality and charger efficiency.

I'd also be interested if anyone else has first hand experience?
Additional to the OP's requests, does anyone know the make and model for this device, does anyone know if the microphone socket is 2.5mm or 3.5mm, and how securely can it hold a TyTn II in a vertical or horizontal position? (The photos of the mount in use in a car are for a different model, and only show horizontal).

(I'm hoping posting those pics doesn't break any forum rules, I've added them here in case people have an aversion to visiting e-bay In case it isn't obvious, I'm not in any way connected the seller - I'm actually a little suspicious about the device - it seems too good to be true if it works well, and apart from not having a microphone built in meets my needs.)
[edit]
Mic is included, I didn't read the description properly, so unless the supplied one is low quality, that 2.5vs3.5mm query isn't so important, for me at least.
OK, going from the photobucket url, I searched for pocketpcman (not much help, too many results). Can't seem to find a non-ebay shop of his or hers.
His photobucket album is private - I was hoping there would other pics of the model, or the box it came in etc. to aid in identification.
I've sent a question re. the make and model to the seller, will post back if I hear anything
Just got this reply to my e-bay query
this item is supplied directly from my supplier, they do the OEM parts for some big brand companies for years and now they like to work something for themselves.
unlike other car mount, this cradle is molded to fit tytn2. so the last thing you will need to worry about is the phone drop out of the cradle. i use it for my phone (as seen in the pictures), it will not fall out of cradle even you have the cradle upside down.
i will probably have some in stock since the customer feedback is so far so good without problem at all. (you can check my feedback regarding this mount)

So no make or model
Also, the pics he refers to (on the e-bay page), appear to be of a different cradle, one with a speaker grill at the bottom, not an FM frequency selection area. I'm in two minds whether to risk it or not, any able to help out?

In his e-bay store he has to different cradles. One with the speaker is for HTC Touch, other one with FM transmitter is for Kaiser/Tilt.
Did anybody take his chances and bought this thing yet?
By the way, will this cradle hold HTC Tocuh Pro aka Raphael aka AT&T Fuse?
Gave up waiting for a reply from an e-bayer who had the same model for sale.
Took a risk and purchased it, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=270291556041
Will let people here know how well it works, but I won't be in the country until week commencing 17th Nov.
Way to jump in with both feet! Hope it works out. If it does maybe the seller will give you a little bonus. Let us know. And thanks for being the guinea pig.
Have to admit, I sort of tip toed up to the jump line - had to clear it with my wife first (whilst over here in Kazakhstan, she earns 99% of the money, so wasn't mine to gamble with. That said, I may have accidentally forgotten to mention just how untested this model is amongst online communities I frequent )
Like I said, I'll report back with as much info as possible, but looking at around 4 weeks minimum before I get my hands on it (postal service over here is not worth the risk).
OK, received an e-mail from the guy that runs the company. He passed his mobile number, and so I skyped him (Kazakh mobile to UK mobile cost/minute is scary) with my questions.
Obviously I am only relaying his answers, I'll not be seeing this thing for a while yet.
In stock? Yes, a good 30 or so left in stock
Make/Model? OEM, though it was reviewed recently in the PDA Essentials magazine, scored 8/10?
Vertical only? How does it hold it in? Horizontal as well, snug fit - custom made
Microphone socket - 2.5 or 3.5mm? not sure
Charger fused? yes
I had a look through the PDA Essentials forum, and as I'm not in the UK, searched for a torrent with recent editions of the magazine scanned in, but no joy.
Anyway, though I'd pass the info on.
If any readers of PDA Essentials could take a moment to scan through recent editions for a review on this TyTn II FM Car Mount, I'd really appreciate. I've obviously already ordered it, just interested if the reviewers had anything interesting to say.
OK, I've sourced the manual, a description which states you shouldn't use this for voice calls, and an old thread here referring to this same model.
About to head out for a drink, will update this post later tonight/tomorrow, depending on alcohol intake.
American site with 'not for voice calls' ref, manual and one mini review
Old(ish) thread here which refers briefly to this mount - Anyone know if adidas4275 has posted the mentioned mini-review?
As the manual (actually for the ipod version of mount, but should be same) is quite large when viewed on screen, I've chopped it up and hosted it to display here.
Hoping this doesn't ruin the layout of this thread...
Oh, also reduced the pixel size of the manual as it was double the width before
2nd post due to forum's image limit per post....
(all done tonight as not gone out yet)
The package has apparently arrived in good condition, so in 3 or 4 weeks time I should be back home and able to play with it. Will attempt to post notes on it then.
Package arrived a couple of days ago, in good condition, won't be there to test it for 3 weeks, will post back info then.
Arrived, grabbed some photos during the unboxing phase. Only driven twice since installing. No major issues yet. Will try and write up a review sometime soon.

What can I do with a screenless device

Beginning of the year my younger brother gave me his replaced HTC Touch from Telus (which I believe is the Vogue - correct me if I'm wrong). I used it for all of 2 weeks before it cracked in my pocket (huge rage moment).
I've got a Sapphire now, so it's cool, but I just found this busted phone. I still boots and I can hear sounds coming from it, but the screen is still toast (of course).
So, is there anything cool or fun or useful I can do with it? I'm not afraid of getting dirty or technical with it.

get a new screen?
Is it worth the cost? And where do I get one?
(I post before googling, mostly to get more responses, but off I go...)
I found a couple of replacement parts. I guess the screen for the Vogue and Elf are the same.
Now theres two things here:
OEM LCD Screen Display $50 US
https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-touch-oem-lcd-screen-display-d-01230_238.html
OEM LCD Digitizer/touch screen $20 US
https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-touch-oem-lcd-digitizer-touch-screen-d-01246_238.html
What's the difference? I'm fearful of the second one only being the touch input, and that I'd actually need to replace the screen, which is $50 US (and I'm in Canada - pushes it high enough not to be worth it).
Anyone got a broked model with a working screen they want to send me?
I was hoping I could do something without a screen. Like run a TF2 server or host a file share. (I hope you get the sarcasm)
you could sell it... check ebay for the lcd screen and you might save a little money.

can you access the internal memory using active sync? if you can, you can place a .lnk of any program installed on your phone into the /windows/startup/ folder and have it run automatically on boot. trying to think of a program that would be useful without the screen, coming up with blanks right now.

Not sure, I've never done this before. Perhaps I'll try some of that this weekend. It's not really important for me, just something cool to do.
Screenless Device
interesting.. Lol.. I am in Canada looking for a Touch Vogue Cell (doesn't matter what provider as I am pretty sure they are all the same except for Roms and Wifi. )that I can use for parts.. My Touch sensor died, was hoping to get one that was mostly in tact as I can use the touch sensor and the Casing to fix mine.. If you want to be able to do stuff still you can actually, get ActiveSyc working and use My Mobiler and you can do everything you need to through a computer as well.. Is how I do most of my major stuff like txting and settings etc..
Just some random thoughts..
PM ME if you want to talk
I mostly just want to use it as a phone. I've got a Magic from Rogers that work pays for, but my girlfriend's phone is crap. I've seen screens for these things for about $50 around... I may try to take this apart and see if I can get the screen off. If I can, it may be worth a shot.
Are you saying you'd be interested in taking this shell off my hands? I'm pretty sure it's only the screen because I can turn it on and still here things and clicking and whatnot.
continuing on tatnai's thought....I guess you could set it up to act as an ipod shuffle listen to mp3's without a screen. you could have the music link boot from start and set it to be the only thing that runs and bam you have an mp3 player. Also can be used for a paper weight
Note that taking apart the Vogue is hard without the right equipment. You need a fivesided screwdriver (T5) as well as a plastic prying tool. I recently replaced my digitizer and it was fairly easy with these tools (they came with the new digitizer)
If you want a guide to disasembling the vogue, this is what I used.
http://mikechannon.net/PDF%20Manuals/OSeven%27s%20Disassembly%20Guide%20to%20the%20HTC%20Touch%20-%20Elf%20.pdf
Hey, thanks a lot. I'll keep that guide handy. I don't have a plastic tool, but I should be able to make due with some other things around my tool box.
I personally thought my Vogue is one of the easier phones I've disassembled (had to air it out and redo the LCD flex - water damage). You just need a T5 which you've probably got in a screwdriver set somewhere.
Replacing the display itself would be *very* straightforward - disassemble, remove and reinsert one flex cable and two screws, and reassemble. You aren't going to get much out of it without a display, sadly.
As a note, I had the most trouble putting mine together because of the SD card door on the side - try not to let it fall off during disassembly as it's got some rubber tethers that are mildly tricky to put back. It's not exactly a disaster if it comes off though - it took me maybe 30 seconds. Was frustrating though.
Should be good as a card reader, microSD of course.
Get a big enough microSD card and it's a portable drive...slow and there're cheaper and/or faster alternatives...but something to brag about.

[Q] Omnia 7 - microSD card expansion

Has anyone taken their Omnnia 7 apart yet to see if you can replace the microSD card with a higher capacity one?
It's been done on the HD7 so we need a brave volunteer to try the same on the Omnia.
This is really intriguing to me... if anyone does it please take lots of pics!

No, not a normal slot.
In some mobile phones with windows 7, the MicroSD is hidden inside.
You cannot access without unscrewing, and it voids the warranty.
The phone must be taken apart into pieces to find the MicroSD, it is not one you just change for different music all the time!
We need a person to volunteer to take apart their phone!
Windows Phone uses a special high–performance SD card that works differently than SD cards in other devices.-Microsoft

exFAT disk format maybe?
I have an Omnia 7 testing device and I am willing to disassemble it. But I really don't know where to start with this. Seems that the phone can be disassembled only with special tools that I don't have...
Omnia must have a slot like the HD7?
Got this from a link (I am a new user: so can't post links yet: here's a goo.gl/Vi0e)
While the Omnia 7 has an microSD slot, it isn’t your run of the mill one. The microSD card that comes with the device is essentially locked to the device. If you remove the card, it will make the phone inoperable. I did read a tip that this may change later on, or if you swap cards and reformat then you have to suffer with losing your data, but that hasn’t been officially verified yet. Also someone will probably figure out a hack or way to copy the formatting scheme over to a new card to avoid losing your data, so don’t fret too much about this.
Just got delivery of Samsung Omnia 7.
I'm trying to open it up but I can only get access to 1 screw..the other ones are partially or fully obstructed!
@karthikraman - there is no card locking going on and upgrading memory is fully supported by MS. It just has its own special procedure and consequences. Too many tech writers have been reporting this as if it's some kind of hardware hack special to the HD7. Nonsense, as I said it's supported and designed to work that way.
Manufacturers have decided to hide the cards inside. Maybe they thought that was safer so that people didn’t swap in new cards and complain their phones had stopped working or, if they did the hard reset, that they had lost all their data.
Anyway, all we need to know is whether we can get to the SD card in the Omnia 7 or not. If we can the upgrade ought to work.

Well, I can post some pictures later, but generally, as hboos mentioned, the screwes under the battery cover are partially obstructed with the rest of the phones casing... Which means that before unscrewing these, the casing has to be somehow removed. There are no other screws on the phones body, so I guess the plastic top and bottom part of the phone has to be "unclicked" somehow. Or maybe we have to begin from the display, like with iPhone 3G for example...
OK, I have got it apart, but haven't found the SD card yet.
Where the slider is for the USB charger, use a small screwdriver & gently prise the plasic up (with the slider open), gently work your way around to get the complete cover off.
There you will find three screws, once these are rmoved the end will come off, after which you can slide the metal case off. You can then access all the screws.

Just for clarity...to take the first bit off, open the usb slider and put a screw driver in to take off the plastic from the END of the phone... then everything is easy from there.
is it possible for the microsd card to be underneath the sim card slot or inside the area with the antennae?
Update:
I've pretty much dismantled the whole thing...just need to get the screen off and I can't seem to locate teh sd card.....it might be underneath the samsung sticker?
I have two photos but don\t knoiw hwo to put them up...they are 1.5 mb in size
Right guys,
After faffing around with this...the microSD card must be located just beneath the screen..unfortunately, I am unable to check for sure because the board has connections glued on to the sides for the power, camera and volume buttons..
what a downer

HTC, and maybe Motorola, is known to use microSD card for internal storage in various phones. Samsung, on the other hand, doesn't do that normally. All the Galaxy S phones have flash chips mounted directly on the circuit board. Samsung makes those flash chips, so it makes no sense for Samsung to use someone else's microSD cards.
Nice try and thanks for giving it a go.
Here's more info on the official position from MS:
http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2010/10/29/microsoft-speaks-on-micro-sd-and-windows-phone-storage-expansion/
I said on an HD7 thread that I think they are just being really careful and making sure they minimise potential problems - they don't need the launch to collapse with any Apple-antenna type bad press.
I think I've decided to go for an HD7 and will probably upgrade the memory once I've used up the 16GB.

Well on the bright side at least we wont have the memory failures prominent in SD-cards Charlie Kindel spoke about.

Weak wifi signal fix

I have had the A7 for about 6 weeks and have loved it for the most part.
Especially with the latest 1.4 rom from the magnificent Dexter (thanks dude).
The only issue I have really hated is the weakass wifi signal. Standing 3 meters away from my linksys router I was only getting- 60dmb at best, which is pathetic.
During the first teardown I noticed there is an unused antenna which is taped underneath the mainboard. One of this reserved for future use kind of things. It is almost 5 cm longer than the pitiful white antenna. So of course I changed it to the blue.antenna.
Now I.am getting FULL strength wifi. The signal has improved by- 20dmb easily!
My router is on the 3rd floor and I now set a good.signal even in the basement.
Now I do love this unit!
You can see the white antenna in the Teardown post some other user did.
Just fyi.
I'm going to give this a try tomorrow
[Update]

Very Easy, Bump
If you use a signal meter like wifi signal widget, you should see a- 20dbm improvement.
Where you keep your right hand while using your A7 makes a big difference as well.
The lower your righthand when in landscape, the less the antenna.is obstructed.
The fix was quick and easy. Some signal improvement was seen right away, but I'm waiting to test it out in other settings. Here at work I'm on the 10th floor of a well-built brick building and I'm been using wifi from a conference room on the 3rd floor. I can just barely use the browser, but the refresh is very slow. Still, an improvement.
does the swap impact battery life?

How would it? All you are doing is using the longer wire which was previously unused... Its kinda like putting tin foil on your TV antenna.
I would assume that the better wifi signal would improve battery life if anything.
I did see better signal strength when wireless tethering from my Evo, Will test more connections this weekend
Just finished the swap take less than 2 minutes literally. Easiest mod ever!
Easy to do, but didn't help in my case
I use my A7 on my home network and the furthest point in my house is about 100' from my router.
Without the mod I usually can get all 3 bars on the A7 wi-fi indicator to light at the furthest distance. W/ the blue antenna I got 0-1 bar to light. I switched it back to the white antenna and it works much better in my case.
I didn't try it w/ BT, but BT works OK for me w/ the white antenna.
I noticed the same for mine aswell wasn't testing the signal it self just what the a7 told me with the icon and mine was better with the white. Any one know what the real purpose of the blue one is, the future sim card slot??

I would suspect that it was there for SIM provisions as the original version of the board was fully set up for GSM. Probably just a relic of the old design.
buy.com advertises the sim card slot, it would be cool if we could just send our a7 to elocity and get the new screen put on it when it comes out dont see why not.

I noticed the same issue, so I dug in a little deeper and it turns out that it's the application's fault...or maybe some network apps have issues working correctly with the EA7. Nonetheless, I finally found 1 network application that DOES work with the AE7, and appears to give accurate readouts.
Tha Application is called Network Info II ...and it's free.
www . appbrain . com/app/network-info-ii/aws.apps.networkInfoIi
In this app, once you select WiFi, you will see a refresh button(that works).
Instead of -60 dBm when 10ft from my router, I see -30 dBm to -40dBm...depending how I'm holding it, etc.
Interestingly enough, by using this refresh button, I was finally able to see some differences in signal strength based on the way I was holding the device. For me, it seems like the device prefers to be held on the left or bottom side for the best network performance(usually 5-8dBm stronger signal)...which works out perfectly for a right hander. Also noticed that pointing the back side or right side of the device at the wifi source seemed to improve signal strength...of course individual results may vary...especially since Im pretty sure I'm radioactive, lol.
As soon as I find a microscopic torx, t-4 I think, I will disassemble my device and do some comparison tests with both antennas, and look at possible re-routes of the antenna itself, which might improve wifi performance even more.

Companies are usually not geared for this type of service commitment level. However...after the new device comes out, and the old devices arent in the marketplace, and if your unit is still covered under some warranty, and if your unit "mysteriously" stops working ...your warranty replacement unit will probably be the new one.
I just know they would replace a screen if it breaks why can't they just put the new one in and charge me?
The idea of it all sounds good.

Sorry, it is to early in the morning here right now for me to have the motivation to search.
Are you the guy that had the physically broken screen? Or would this be to gain multitouch?
If the reason is the latter, it won't work. If it is that your the guy with the busted screen, I'd tell them to fix it for free. Tell them it's their fault, and that you got frustrated and punched it lol
Nope not me just saying should be able to put different screen in is all.

[Q] Network Showing "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@" on Lock Screen

I just got my microSIM yesterday to use in my Nexus 4, I rang my carrier (EE) to get my mobile number transferred to my new microSIM. A short while later I got a text to delete the message and reboot the phone, my SIM was then connected but where it says the network name on the lockscreen it says "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@" instead of "EE". I have took a look in the status settings of the phone and it displayes EE fine, as well as my mobile number etc.
Here's a screenshot:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7f2AVggTWvtLWowQUpOZHVSd2s
Now I don't have any issues on the network, everything works fine, it's just I'm a tad OCD and it is driving me nuts seeing this on the lockscreen. I've tried resetting the Nexus 4 hoping it would fix it but it is still showing that name.
Any ideas folks?
reset to factory settings again.

Again? Twice does the trick?
Factory resetting for the second time doesn't help
Dude i have the exact same problem and have just made a thread about the same thing LOL. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997726
Got a new micro sim to replace my normal sim from orange and activated it yesterday. It shows as @@@@@@@@@@@@@@ on the lockscreen and notification bar.
I have tried my wifes micro sim for her s3 and that displays it fine as EE.
I have asked orange to resend me the text and also reset my phone but its still the same.
Orange are sending me another sim out to try but i dont know if it will work...
This is a strange one.
I have also put my om card in my wifes s3 and it displays as EE in her phone.
It must be some sort of compatibilty isssue between the new micro sims and and the nexus 4 =/
Very strange indeed.

Thanks for the response!
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.. The lady I spoke to at Orange said that she would have to select Galaxy SIII on her system for them to send me a microSIM, I wonder if it will be any different if they selected the iPhone 5 for example. I don't know, it really is strange!
Does your microSIM come with that "quicktap" functionality? Maybe the NFC chip in the microSIM has something to do with it? Probably not though.. Please keep me updated, especially if you find a solution for this.
Also, are you on Google+ by any chance? Here's a link to my profile, it may be easier/faster to communicate over there, I don't know

I think I know what the issue is.
Are you using nexus 4 without case? Single handed operation?
If so what happens is your palm touches the touch screen on the side by default due to curved glass and thin bezel. This reduces touch sensitivity.
Try keeping the phone down and try.

Your Sim Card is to old. You need a new updated Sim Card.
Just call your Provider and he will normally send you a new one for free.
Are you rooted? If you are you can change what it says in those two spots.

I have the exact same issue, I'm using the micro quicktap Orange SIM from my S3. I guess to deduce the problem, I would have to try a normal micro Orange SIM, will give that a try when I get home.

Please do report back with the results. I have also got the micro quicktap Orange SIM, I tried turning NFC off on the phone to see if that would make a difference (if there was interference between NFC chips on the SIM and handset) but made no difference whatsoever
What is suposed to be showing? Could it be like your settings are set to hide some information?

It's meant to be showing as "EE", I think the only way to edit/remove the information is by rooting the device, which I do not intend to do.
Im 100% sure its the quick tap sim thats causing the problem.
My wifes normal micro sim displays it just fine...
Just to chip in, i got my normal sim changed to an nfc quick tap sim for my GS3, on the normal orange rom, it just came up with EE, however when i booted into CM10 it would display either @@@@@@@@@@@@ or [email protected]@@@@@@@@@@ which i assume is the distinction between orange and tmobile.Naturally i just it was because EE was new and i was on a custom rom, that it didnt quite have the correct apn settings built with CM or somthing.
So when i got my N4 it now displays either [email protected]@@@@ or [email protected]@@ again am sure thats the difference between the two networks, however i have no idea why it does this, or how to change it. Everything still works as it should, i did change the apn settings to EE's instead of stock orange (just incase that made a difference, but also am pretty sure i get better H+ signal but that might just be me) I guess the only thing it could be then is because its the NFC sim card but i dont think i can be arsed to call orange to get them to send me another Sim card
After six or seven phonecalls, explaining the situation, they still send me microSIMs with "quicktap technology". It is infuriating to explain myself everytime and they claim they'll send me one without quicktap but they send me one with quicktap anyway.
Has anyone received a microSIM without quicktap yet?
Not being funny, but why does this bother you, as you can see from my post, i too have the @@@@@@@ but it doesnt affect the phone, and if barclays/orange open the quick tap app to more than just the GS3, then you will be pre-prepared.
