At&t data speeds with Bell Desire Z - G2 and Desire Z General

Hey guys,
Once again thanks to all the developers who work so hard at making my phones so awesome.
Anyway, I just got the desire z from canada yesterday and I am using it on At&t here in southern california. The bell version has 3G bands on 850/1900 and the reception around riverside/san bernardino/inland empire here in california on At&t is usually quite good (go figure!). Anyhow, I have multiple cell phones including samsung focus, palm pre plus, and iPhone 4, and each one of them is pushing harder and faster data speeds than my desire Z When I run the speed test.net program on my iPhone 4, I average 1.2mps down, 0.5 up roughly. I have never seen my desire z go past 0.5mbs down/0.4 mps up. And yes, I have the "H" symbol with my settings on gsm/wcdma (I have even tried gsm only, wcdma only). Now, when I run the speed test on my verizon fios 25 down/25up, it pull something like 16mps down/9mps up! Also, when running the speed test over the network (cellular), I see it initially jump into 1.0mps down but then it starts to stutter and eventually gives me a slow ass connection When running wireless on fios however, it is butter smooth! (Yes I have changed servers on the speed tests all the way from kansas to new york!). Any thoughts?
BTW --> running stock bell rom with no rooting done yet.....might end up returning this
another BTW --> this phone is amazing! flawless in all aspects except data speed
Any feedback is always highly appreciated!
Happy New Year everyone,
Paul

Are you sure you entered the APN for AT&T correctly? On Bell I can pull anywhere from 1.5 to 6 mbps depending on where I am, so if your particular phone actually has reception issues it's an isolated incident.
Although it's worth noting that you're not actually doing all that bad speed wise when compared with your iPhone 4. You're getting half the speed, but it's really only 0.7 mbps less. If your iPhone was getting 3 mbps consistently and your Desire Z was getting 1.5 or less consistently, then there would be a major issue. It sounds like AT&T in your area just really, really sucks.

I don't think changing that actually does anything. The radio bands are set in hardware and can't be changed.

I have the same device running on AT&T in Northern California.
I get decent speeds here, about 1.75-2.5 mb/s download on average. I am rooted and did not run the speed test prior to root to have a figure to compare against.
One thing I would check would be the settings in speedtest. When I originally ran it, it went off of a server in Kansas for some reason. I updated the list to a nearby location and the speeds were back to normal. I would set it to connect to the same servers as your other devices and then compare the speeds.

tmobile 3g speeds

this is my first week using tmobile in the US with the nexus one.
I am not able to get download speeds more than 800kbps. it does not matter how good the reception is.
I have tried in various places in north CA and in cleveland OH.
I think that such speeds are pretty bad for 3g. with at&t I used to 2-3mbps at times.
my friend with the verizon droid is seeing 1.5mbps-2.5mbps download speed .
what are other users on tmobile are seeing?
seems like tmobile is rate limiting the speeds or their network is just really bad.
How are u measuring the speed? I use the speed test app and it used to have a server close by in San Jose (65 mi) now I have to use a server in new Mexico and I'm in CA so that makes it seem slower too
There are two apps in the market i test with: speedtest.net and extreme speed test.
I also checked with the laptop tethered to the phone. same pathetic speeds. i can hardly call it 3g comparing to the competitors.
Is it the phone or is it tmobiles network?

i just got 2MB/s up and 400 kb/s down
WOW thats whats im talking about best ive ever seen
still waiting for those 6mb/s up and 1mb/s down (a.k.a. my cable high speed enternet at home)
I have never seen verizon that fast in my area, generally 500 kbits to 1mbits but I would say that you are getting the norm for tmo as mine have never reached 1 mbit but can go past 10 mbit on wifi.
BGR did a test a while back although not scientific agrees with the tests I have done in my area.

Try this speed test....
I usually see 1000 - 1200 kbps but quite often see 1700 - 2000 kbps using the speedtest.net app in the android market. Something to remember, your 3G connection is initially UMTS and will switch to HSDPA on demand and when available. You may notice that your first test will show a ping of ~300ms and speeds of 500 - 700 kbps (UMTS), but if you hit "test again" immediately after the first test completes you should see a ping of about ~175ms and approximately double the speed (HSDPA). I've noticed that the default server (closest server according to the speedtest.net app) is usually slow and doesn't give me proper results. I've had very good luck using the Chicago server. Try using the Chicago server and run back-to-back tests, let us know if your results change.
I would agree T-Mobile's 3G is crap. Using a Rogers G1 on AT&T using speedtest.net app, I was seeing over 2Mbit down and over 800kbit up consistently.
T-Mobile's so called "7.2 Mbit upgrade" is a joke. Kind of like their coverage maps. I want to like them, but at least in my area, AT&T obliterates them. It's too big of a different for me. If an AT&T 3G compatible nexus one is released, I will have to get one. I could probably live with the slower speeds if the coverage wasn't so spotty.
Your move T-Immobile.

As a former T-Mo Wireless Engineer Intern, I can tell you that there is only a very very small roll out on 7.2 right now. They are testing the network before they enable more circuits. The original plan when I worked there was for a gradual 2 city per month rollout. Then slowly build the network to cope with added traffic. Its suppose to be a gradual process that will also involve using old equipment and expanding current 3g service. The high speed roll out was priority one, then is service expansion. Also contracts were involved last I saw that would expand coverage 2-fold, but negotiations for tower rights were falling through, so I don't know where thats going.

There is an issue with 3g on the nexus that has been commented on a number of times, and that is the flapping of UMTS and HSDPA. (not to be confused with those flapping between 2g and 3g). With my G1 I was able to get speeds as high as 3Mbit, but I too have only seen 800Kbit max on my nexus and I believe its due to this constant flapping of 3g technologies.
Today is my first day on tmobile with the N1, I've been running on Edge ATT.
I was worried about switching over because my gf has had tmobile and doesn't have great service at our house.
I was afraid mine would be worse with the 3g issues the N1 has been having but it appears to be almost identical to hers.
in my living room we get 1-2 bars 3g and I see test speeds of 50-300 down and 950-1250 up.
I go to my office right above the living room and get 3 bars and 700-900 down speeds with 700-900 up speeds.
No stoked about it but I havnt had any signal swapping issues so I'm going to use it for GPS to test out now and see how it does. GPS and mapping even on edge with ATT was super fast so I have high hopes.

So are you saying that if you pop in the SIM card from the N1 to the G1 in the same place you get 3Mbps vs. 800Kbps on the N1?

Correct, I get full signal at my work (-63dBm 25asu). The G1 didn't skip around and stuck firmly to UMTS, and I was getting much better rates with it. My N1 however maxes out at no more than 800.
@jmcdonald what are you agreeing with LOL were talking about decent speeds then you say you agree with the low speeds??? LOL
Anyway I don't have 3g flopping problems neither did I on my g1
I am seeing speeds in most cases upward of 2.2 mbps... and am even averaging over 1mbps in upload speeds which is pretty good when I have full 3g reception in the Northern NJ area.
I get anywhere from 2.0 - 3.5Mbps down on average, and I have seen up to 4.5Mbps down on occasion. Up is always around 1 - 1.3Mbps.
However, I'm in Philadelphia, and we have HSPA+
Wow, I don't know how you guys are getting DL speeds upwards of 1.5mbps! Here in San Diego, the most I've seen anyone on ATT get is around 1.2mbps, and 1.1 on Sprint. Tmo is usually anywhere from 700-1mbps with some spikes over that now and then.
My G1 and N1 get the same speed range.
I'm in Maryland, just outside of D.C. I also just switched from AT&T to T-Mobile (yesterday actually). I'm also getting DL speeds of like 700-800 kbps. Hope it will someday be a little faster than that.
download - 137kbps
upload - 217kbps
From all the repots in this post it seems that tmob is just slower in some parts of the country and faster in others.
I hope they are planning on catching as 700-800kbps is a joke.

Slow 3G speeds with new EVO

I picked up a refurbed EVO Tuesday and immediately rooted it. I later found out that the 3G is really slow, i'm only getting .05-.1Mbps through speedtest.net's app but the actual experience feels much slower. Switching to 4G or wifi will yield appropriate speeds.
I thought maybe it was the ROMs but i went back to the stock ROM, Myn's ROM, and Fresh's ROMs and they all had slow 3G speeds.
Any ideas on what's up? My last resort would be to unroot it and bring it back for them to check it out :/
it's not your phone as sprint is having random outages right now with voice & data. your not alone.
i also believe they also may be doing some sort of network change due to the big announcement they will have here shortly. i could be wrong on that but i have a feeling that's whats causing the issues.
Try this by gokuman56. His post his credit. Is great and it works.
You will need your MSL, Call Sprint or follow this:
1. Dial ##3282#
2. It will open a menu, click WiMAX and enter MSL. Note: 4G radio must be on.
3. Go to extensions and Hold EntryRX and Write Extension
4. Change the Value to -110 (The Lower the weaker the signal can be for the phone to connect.
5. Change EntryCINR to 0004
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are tired of the Radio taking forever to reconnect once you loose your 4G signal, then:
1. Change Scan Retries to 00015
2. Change Scan attempt timeout to 0002
You will now have a somewhat faster and much stronger 4G signal!!!
EDIT: Easier Way to get MSL. Okay so you have to download connectbot from the Market
1. Open ConnectBot
2. Agree Next Next Yada Yada
3. Press SSH and select Local
4. type in whatever you want by local and press enter
5. ok once you see a black screen and to the left a cash sign, type in "getprop" without the quotes
6. You should see a lot of words, scroll up all the way at the top.
7. Near the middle of the screen until you see [ril.MSL]
8. It will be 6 digits and that's your MSL
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For 3G Try This..
It may already be implemented in your ROM, just check again:
Steps:
1. Know the MSL
2. Dial ##3282#
3. Go to multimedia
4. HTTPPD Proxy Port must be 0
5. HTTPPD Proxy Address must be 0.0.0.0
The 3G hack was found here:

For the EVO a similar 4G hack has been discovered here.

If you are rooted, the easiest way to get your MSL is to download the MSL Reader app right from the market.

Guess this is what i have to look forward to when i replace my current evo with horrible 3g speeds. They think a new evo may solve the problem....i think not.
fixed! re-provisioning worked. i had to do ##3282#, Edit, Data, Menu, Restore. It rebooted my phone and now i'm back to 1Mbps download speeds Thanks for the link and help everyone
Yeah, it's happening to me too right now. I'm getting .02 down and .16 up. I normally get around .8 down and .7 up. It's been three days of the same sh*t. Its getting annoying because I love my evo and the internet is super slow right now.
Don't know why or how, but when running speed test app, when I turned off the location setting, i noticed anywhere from .2 to .8 on average. With location off,i also was able to get over 1.4 mbps on 3g. I dont know if it had the same effect, but was able to get over 6.5 mbps on 4g.
Mainly, the location service turned off repeatedly returned higher speeds on mine.

I have been having very similar issues lately. I first purchased my EVO about two weeks ago. I had hboot 2.10 and hardware 0004. I finally managed a root and stuck with Sprint Lovers Rom for a little bit. Trying to get over to Myn's Warm2.2, I started having serious 3G issues.
I flashed the most up-to-date radio, wimax, nv, and PRI (the combo zip), but it didn't improve the speeds. Most webpages would time out when trying to load, even though I showed full signal strength.
I restored to Sprint Lovers ROM where I've been able to get pages to load, albeit very slowly.
My speedtest results are a mixed bag. With full 3G signal strength, I recently got a DL speed of 275 kbps. It goes up and down, and even reached 900 kbps on one test. However, the experience when using the internet seems much, much slower than that, and certainly slower than when I first got the device.
Running a test on 4G yielded DL speeds of around 500 kbps, which is certainly slow.
I'm in Houston and don't know of any outages or service disruptions here.
Should I try an older radio? If I flash pc36img again to unroot, would that restore my previous radio versions and what not?
Any help would be appreciated.

is not suppose to make your speeds better just make you get data with a lower signal level. your phone has like a meter that when it has a sertain signal level you get no data all were doing here is lowering that level so we can get data working at a lower signal level.

No, it doesnt make it so you can get data with a lower signal. NOTHING can give you a better signal except an airave. The only thing opening the ports does is redirects the data to your phone, without going through sprint's servers first.

Question for ATT users

I currently have the the G2 on the T-mobile network. I frequently switch back and forth between 3G and Edge which is driving me nuts. Is this a phone issue or a network issue? Do people with the Desire Z on the ATT network have the same issue?
Its a network issue with your location, It happens on any phone including the iPhone. Its if the carrier has that service available where you are.
I am located in Minneapolis which supposedly has very good T-mobile 3G coverage. A friend of mine who has a G1 on T-mobile here in Minneapolis always sees solid 3G. This makes me wonder whether this is a phone issue. Flashing the 17 radio did improve reception, but not satisfactorily. Could any ATT users share their experience?
I mean, the phone and radio and rom will play a factor somewhat in it but not that much. To be fair, edge and 3G dont have too much a difference in speed or at least not here in Florida, but i run 4G almost everywhere anyways.

For the MOST part, this is a network issue. The phone Radio will have an impact on the quality of cell signal you get but the network carries the most weight. Not all phones are created equal as far as reception goes. My DZ is average. Its not great like my previous BB Bold was but doesn't drop calls like my gf's phone.
I do on occasion drop from 3G to Edge but only when I'm in rural areas. I work in a jail on occasion and of course the concrete walls aren't great for cell signal. I usually switch from 3G to Edge when I'm there because Edge just holds the signal better rather than the phone killing itself trying to find a solid 3G signal.
Also, like the other user mentioned, 3G and Edge aren't night and day per-say. For example, sometimes Edge can be FASTER depending on how much traffic is on the network at that time. I experienced this on a day trip to San Francisco. With 3 gazillion Iphones in the city, I couldn't get my phone to connect to anything with 3G. When I switched to Edge, it was moving steady no problem...
Just my 2 cents.
Is Negri Electronics still the cheapest place to buy the Desire Z NAM or are there other sites with better offers? I checked ebay and all the phones there are more expensive when you calculate in shipping.
Possible Fix
Here is one thing that may fix the problem, as it has for me. Set your phone to WCDMA only by dialing *#*#4636#*#* . A menu will then appear. Select Phone Information. Change Set Preferred Network Type to WCDMA Only.

I feel very sorry for you then. EDGE makes me want to claw my eyes out versus 3G. Everywhere in New England on AT&T, the difference in speed between EDGE and 3G is like the difference between throwing a bullet and shooting it. Even more so with the "4G" HSPA+ backhaul recently done by AT&T in many areas. But even before that, it was a big difference.
My Desire Z very seldom switches from 3G to EDGE. When it does, its in areas of very weak 3G coverage. As others have mentioned, its likely a network issue. Flashing a new radio is pretty easy (and you can always flash back to stock), so it may be worth a try. But it may or may not have any significant impact.

SLOW 3/4G DATA SPEEDS bell i9100m

just picked up my new phone, however 3/4g data speeds are crap. speed tests come out at less then impressive (when i can do them) but real world performance is far bellow what the speed test says. i am pulling about 1Mb/s down and about 1Mb/s up (usually less but im rounding), now the fun part, if i try to pull up a website, it is slow as hell or times out. google market also times out 70% of the time. downloading a 1mb app can take upwards of 7 minutes as it pauses while doing this, facebook app usually times out or works for a few minutes and then stops receiving data. all this said, my battery died at noon today because my phone was constantly trying to sync with gmail, FB, google+, etc. if i watch the data activity icon it looks as if my phone repeatedly sends off requests but does not receive data back. i have seen that some at&t users with an unlocked i9100 are also having the same issues, but they seem to mainly be a apn issue. others are using root explorer to change some config files. am i alone? is my phone defective? or is this just my new galaxy s2 ruined by bell?

If I am correct, I think you should be able to experiment with the different modems avaliable for the SII.
For me the newest euro one has the fastest speeds, but that depends on the network and country you are in!

Weird.
I did not have any of those issues so I think you have a dud.
Take it back before you start trying other fixes etc as that's what the return period is for.
I've used it since yesterday (Thur/21) and didn't notice any issues/problems with WiFi, or HSPA+ speeds.
Hrm... mind you I didn't actually use it on Bell, could be their network.
As soon as I got the sucker I rooted / unlocked so I could pop my Rogers SIM in there and it's fine on Rogers.
Actually there is one thing you could check before you return.
Do a *#0011* and make sure your WCDMA says 850 Band 5, if it says 1900 it will be as slow as *[email protected](.
How is it that you change it to 850?
My baseband version changed to XXKG2 when it was originally UMKG2. This is probably why I'm showing as 1900 band when I do *#0011#*.
I'll have to wait for someone to post the UMKG2 modem file.
Could be Bells network. I thought maybe the custom ROM I am currently using was to blame but I am experiencing everything you are with my sgs1 and have been for about a week now. I'm in Calgary.
Edit : Also I get the best speeds on 1900, 850 is only useful out in the mountains here.

Dude you do realise that this is quadband GSM and quadband hspda phone. This means if you are on 1900 currently blame your provider or maybe you screwed band selection which is easily corrected. I usually turn off euro GSM and 3g frequencies and leave only our 850 and 1900 bands to save battery so it does not keep searching for 2100 for example.

Same boat. On Rogers network and only getting ~1.5mbps.

Do a *#0011* and make sure your WCDMA says 850 Band 5, if it says 1900 it will be as slow as *[email protected](.

ok, i am running on the 850 band 5. i did notice a slowdown on my sgs previously but not the timeouts/drop data connections/etc. i just finished a factory reset and lost all mobile net access for about 2 hours but have it back now (kinda). popped my sim out and back into my sgs and am having similar problems with the sgs but not as severe. i guess i can chalk it down to network issues that started up within 5 hours after buying the new phone. talked to the place of purchase and they are saying the network is loaded do to "rib fest" which in all reality only pulls maybe 1k to 2k of people that are already up here cottaging so i have trouble with there theory that the local towers are loaded as really its only one tower thats loaded more than normal. love the phone, wifi speeds and page rendering is retarded fast. i was watching a 720p video streaming from vimeo through the phone and scrolling around the page, it stayed smooth as butter. i just want my mobile internet to work. past that, when i have been able to do a speed test i have got no more than 2Mb/s, a far cry from what the technology can do. I hate you bell!
I have by Bell Galaxy S 2 running with telus, I am getting between 2-4 mbps download, and 1-3 mbps on upload. I an only getting up to maybe 1mbps on wifi, download or upload. I am using a 2.3.4 custom Darky Rom.
I'm getting 3 to 7mbps download on 4g and 1.5 to 4mps upload. Purchased from bell. On bell network.
On my home wifi 16mbps to 19mbps down, 1mbps up right next to the router.
I am using KF3 modem(radio) and it has improved the speeds and reception.. slightly (5 to 10%) but i do find the wifi signal doesn't crap out anymore which as my problem.
Try KF3 modem, put the file on your phone and flash with CWM http://www.mediafire.com/?fnkld9swo6u99
keep in mind there is no official ROM for bell yet so if u flash custom roms you wont have warranty until stock firmware is released for it.
maybe u gusy are in low 4g coverage ares? im around the don mills and lawrence area in toronto.
first one is 4g, second is wifi
Its probably most likely bell. Its nothing but corporate ripoffs. If this was the U.K they would be out of business. I dont see anywhere near 2mbit in newfoundland either.
*#0011# showd 0 HSPA+ connections so im guessing either bell doesnt have hspa+ here or bell has severely crippled the provisioning in favor of their internet sticks. But even then when a person pays nearly 60.00 a month for an up to 42mbit connection, it states that average is only something like 5 to 8mbit.
I share the same slowness and timeouts as you.

It seems they have bad coverage there. Why don't you get people in your area to sign a petition for Bell to install some antennas in the area and send it to Bell... worth a shot.
I am on Sasktel and the data on the Galaxy S II is quite poor. I have been getting aroud 2.5 Mbps Up and 2.5 Mbps Down max, this is including build.prop edits. I have tried KH3, KH1, KG3 and KG2 with KG3 yielding the best results. These numbers are about the same as my Nexus S but the Nexus S yielded much more consistant results.
2.7Mbps down and 1.5 up with KG6 on Telus
8 Mbps down & 1 Mbps up - On Virgin Mobile, HSPA+
Try flashing the KH3 modem using Odin, it's said to work extremely well on the Bell/Virgin network.
Just put the KE7 modem on my phone, pulled the best numbers I've got yet and I have tried MANY modems. 6012kbps up and 2633 down. Will continue to test and report back if there is a change. This is on Sasktel with a KH3 based rom.
Decent speeds for me in Guelph on Rogers.
*edit* After seeing some of the above posts maybe it's not so decent after all. Maybe I'll try some other firmwares for kicks.

I have run out of ideas! 3G Limited?

Hello there new guy here, and XDA noob
For a while now, about 2 years i have been stuck on a maximum of 250 kbps. Previously i had a HTC Desire Rooted and with custom rom Redux. I could never get above 250 kbps on 3g.
Now i have a HTC One X, and yet im still getting the same speeds, which kinda rules out any hardware bottlenecks. I can run on both T-Mobile and Orange Uk (because they merged). My brother owns a HTC Sensation and runs on the exact same carrier as i do and uses the same mast and manages to gain over 500kbps.. HOW?!
I tried ringing orange and asking if there was any limitations and they said no, they even put me through to the best tech service they had :l. Any ideas guys? I would be very rgateful if you could give me any insight. thanks
need more info. this doesnt sound right at all. where do you live? ever checked your distance to nearest cell tower? do you know of anyone else getting better speeds on the same network?
do you have proper network selected in settings? correct APN?
perhaps network build.prop tweaks? sometimes they help other times they can hurt..
also *#*#INFO#*#* select phone information and radio band.
could also have a bad SIM card if it is old.
I live in the UK, Around Birmingham and Coventry. I'm usually always on full signal and iv'e even been as close as the "Danger Radiation" sign lol My brother typically gets over 500 kbps and is pretty consistant... lucky B... :l
Correct APN? I presume you mean Carrier? im with Orange and it all seems grand.. so i think anyways.
Build.prop, i wouldn't know where to start with that ,i presume make a backup and try flashing an update.zip, if any problems use restore?
Not quit sure what im looking for in Phone info, help me out ?
And im sure it's not the sim card, it's the new micro sim that came with the phone !
APN = access point name
and you would only have access to your build.prop(properties) if you are rooted.
phone info; try entering this into the dialer : *#*#4636#*#*
select phone information (then you might need to press menu button) and choose radio band from there. You may also be able to change this in settings.
Is 500kbs the fastest speed you guys have seen? sounds very odd. I think I may have heard of this.. being too close to a tower causes terrible speeds, if it is fact the case, you may want to try connecting to the next closest tower. there should be some free apps around to view your cell tower info and possibly even change towers.
500kbs is not 3g.
Yeah it looks like all my APN settings and band is correct, if they weren't i wouldn't really be on a 3g signal what so ever. No other useful information is seen in info, Also, i have tried switching between carriers and tried the speed test on many many differen't towers. Im really stumped myself, and my phones rooted, but without RUU i can't install any Radio drivers can i?
3G service usually does not get above 2mb which in reality is only 200kbs.. i ran a speed test on a buddy's iPhone and it was only 1.54mb which is only 150kbs.... So you are right in the mid grade of speed... Get a 4G cell...
Those are horrible speeds for 3G at the least. Absolutely atrocious!
Have you tried consulting your carrier? Perhaps they could resolve the issue.

My brother has a HTC Sensation and is able to get 600 kb/s+ I hope your not confusing it with kbps ! Sorry if i confused you !
And yeah i contacted them a while ago and they said everything was fine from their end !
I have a HTC ONE X, surely that's capable of H+, Something isn't right.
