Hi happened to me too.
Type *#7284#, so you'll enter PhoneUtil and be sure both the "UART" and the "USB" are set on PDA!

Help!
I rooted my Galaxy 3 and since then i can only connect and transfer data between my phone and my computer by allowing USB debug mode. It used to work without a driver installed on my pc (only data transfer mode like with a pendrive), but now my laptop (which doesn't have Kies on it) doesn't recognize it. I tried it with my TV and it said "unsupported USB device". It used to work as a pendrive but now nothing recognizes it:---( Please help:-C

What he is trying to say, is wich is the default action when you connect the USB.
Example: every time that you connect the USB the phone gets into Kies mode, or Mass Storage.
My G3 is configured to ask what to do...

it worked for me on kies, but i didn;t like it anyways
What i did was go to settings --> about phone --> usb settings
and try the other options (i'm using media player option, not sure why mass storage doesn't work)
Did you try to change the usb ports on your pc (stick the cable into different usb ports)?

What OS are u running?
Could also have something to do with the number of irq's on your motherboard.
PC's older then aprox. 3/4 years have less irq's and can have trouble with much external devices

keevy17, u have the phone already? If yes, you could help us resolve our questions in last pages of this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694835&page=9
Q: Are there any notifications (on screen, backlight of buttons, ...) about missed calls, new mails, sms? Is there any notification when u charge the battery and the battery is fully charged?
Thanks in advance.
The default USB connection is to activate Samsung Kies. You'll have to go to settings->About Phone->USB Settings to change. If it doesn't work after changing, soft reset the phone and try again.
Caused me a bit of head scratching until I went through the options.
Now am having same problem, can'r see mass storage in my computer.
I think I read you need to enable USB Debugging then it will work. for both of you I believe.
With USB debug i can only use adb, nothing works. If i disable debug i can copy files via MTP protocol but mass storage doesn't work.
Edit.
Found the problem, it doesn't mount it self like Desire/N1 i had mount it my self. All working.

It was bit tricky to start with as i thought my phone is broke. First go to setting > About > USB Settings > and select Ask on connection. Plug the cable in to the and from drop down notification bar and hit USB connected then you get the option to mount the mass storage.

If you want kies to work with the phone, dont kill MTP.. But kies is acting weird, soemtimes it doesnt see the phone, but after unplug and replug it works again.. I've given up on kies actually, over 100MB to download and worst than some beta software i've used.
also, i cannot get samsung apps to work on kies, it just error or timeout.. you guys hv any luck?
I haven't tried kies yet, i'll try when i get home from work.
Anybody know how to mount on a Mac? I tried changing the USB settings to Mount/Media, no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
I can connect the i9000 to my PC using mass storage mode and see it as an USB disk, but it doesn't work on my Mac, it recognize nothing (I have chosen to mount the drive after connected to the USB as I did the same when connecting to Windows). I can see there is a Samsung USB device connected in the System Profiler but the disk won't mount, any clues?
Thanks.
I have the very same problem. Works in PC, not on my iMac.

Hi everyone,
Just got my Galaxy S II today but am having 2 issues with it, 1st, i dont know how to mount it in mass storage mode, everytime i connect it, my Win 7 x64 just tries to find drivers for MTP device but doesnt find any, I tried installed SGS 1 drivers.
My other issue is everytime i boot up the phone, the status bar crashes like 2 - 3 times, until it stops crashing and no longer appears, the message
"The application Status Bar (processcom.android.systemui) has stopped unexpectedly). Please try again"
I have tried restoring the phone to factory settings, however, this didn't fix it as after I installed a few safe apps (angry brids, google earth, well known apps) it happened again.
Thanks for your help.
Try to install Keis or try a different usb port/computer to see if that resolves issues. Have you done any modding or anything?

Had the exact same problem when I first got mine. Do a factory reset and format the internal memory aswel. I had my micro-sd card inserted aswel but it didn't need to be formatted. That was 3 days ago and I havn't had a problem since
Put it in development mode: settings, applications, development.
Then when you plug it in, an option will appear in the pull down menu bar, just select "connect usb".

Regarding your issues with the USB. My SGS2 by default seemed to have USB Debugging enabled under the application settings, this meant it always connects as Mass Storage on my machine. When I installed Kies to update my firmware I had to un-tick USB Debugging before it would load up in MTP mode for connection to Kies.
Hope this helps.

I just tried doing a factory reset, formated the internal memory and the micro sd, the problem was gone again until I activated usb debugging mode again through the settings, a strange problem as this means I can't access the phone in mass storage :/

Just tried this mate after factory resetting and formatting everything, this seems to be the cause for the crashing of the status bar as everything is fine until I try this

Hi,
EDIT * I have found a solution in that I can connect via WI fi so that's pretty good but if anyone can help me with the USB issue, it would still be appreciated. It seems that the Wi Fi connection is more limited as I am unable to view things in explorer *
hoping to get some help using my USB to connect to my PC. I've installed Kies but when I try to connect to my PC it just keeps on trying to connect but never actually does it.
I have looked for guidance on this but keep coming across the instructions to go into 'about phone > USB settings' etc etc. However, I do not have a USB settings in about phone. In fact, there is nothing at all about USB in About Phone. I do have a 'USB Utilities' in Wireless and Networks but all that gives me the option to do is 'Connect Storage to PC'. I have a memory card in my phone.
When I do connect to the USB cable, with Kies open, when windows 'finds new hardware' it keeps saying a problem occurred during installation.
Please can anyone help me out? All I want to do is basically drag and drop some files from my PC to my phone. Thanks very much for your help.
Settings --> Applications -- Development --> USB debugging.
Thanks for that!
It got me a little further. I also unmounted then remounted the SD card. However, when I try to connect via kies I now get the message:
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to re click the USB settings on the phone before connecting to Kies now that it's installed the hardware on my PC?

Turn off USB-Debugging
Don't connect phone yet
Open Kies
Open the Tools menu -> Troubleshoot connection error
Go through the guide and let it reinstall the drivers.
Connect you phone, and let it connect
The default setting has the USB debugging tick greyed out. When I select it, it asks me if I want to allow debugging.
Do you mean that I shouldn't allow debugging and then connect (after reinstalling Kies) or should I allow it and connect? Sorry for my noobishness, Android is all completely new to me.
You should untick the USB-debugging - Then reinstall drivers NOT entire Kies
OK, it's unticked and I'm reinstalling the drivers via troubleshooting.
Do I need to unmount then remount the SD card before connecting my phone? Thanks for your help btw.
Shouldn't make a difference
Bah, I still have the same problem. It just says that there was a problem installing the hardware when I plugged in the phone.
After reinstalling the drivers, i shut down Kies then reopened it. I then plugged in the USB and then plugged the USB into my phone.
When I first installed Kies yesterday, Microsoft Active Sync kept on trying to activate and ask for a CD. It kept on holding up Kies. In the end I uninstalled Active Sync. Also, I still have Samsung PC Studio on my PC from when I had a Samsung a few years ago. It was one of those old slider phones, not a smart phone. Could that be part of the problem? I was hoping to keep it because it's proved to have the best media player I've ever had.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
Try without restarting Kies.
What part of the drivers aren't installed? (Check device manager)
In Device Manager, under Portable Devices there's something called Android MTP that has an exclamation mark next to it. It says it's not configured correctly and that 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'. I'll reinstall the Kies drivers now.
Thanks for this help mljjlm
P.S. Now that I've unplugged the phone, the MTP thing isn't showing in the device manager list anymore.

Of course, it's a part of the phone, and it should not be plugged in because they would have to force a reboot when reinstalling drivers (which might sort your problem btw)
Reinstalled the Kies Drivers and then plugged in my phone but got the same problem. It says a problem occurred. Same device now has a problem in device manager. Maybe I should just uninstall everything and restart? Should I uninstall the old PC studio too?
Just try the reboot without uninstalling anything and then plug the phone in when your pc has booted
Argh! Still didn't work! I think there must be a problem with my PC, well, I'll try doing full uninstalls and reinstall it all. I have to go now as well so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Thanks very much for your patience mljjlm. It has been greatly appreciated
Are you trying to just transfer files back and forth? If so... forget using Kies.
(I don't have a micro-USB cable with me currently, so this is all from memory)
Just remove the drivers from your device manager so it's like your machine has never seen your phone before. Then on your phone enable usb-debugging.
When you then plug in your phone, you should get a usb icon up top on your phone's display... pull the window-shade down and click on the USB connection button. You should get a fullscreen window on your phone that says something like USB Connection with the friendly android waiving.
Now your PC should see your phone as a standard USB mass storage device.
try plugging the usb cable in another usb port on your computer and than try again.

You're using Kies, that's what you're doing wrong. You said in your very first post you wanted to be able to drag and drop some files from your PC to your phone, so use USB debugging (say yes when it asks you) and Windows Explorer.
If you are using a custom rom like Checkrom Revolution you will need to install the kies support from kitchen pro.
Also are you using the cable that came with your phone?
I have found a few microUSB cables that will allow charge and wont allow data transfer like the new ones for nokia devices and some blackberrys.
It worked! The USB debugging thing!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. The forum said I was limited to 5 thanks per day so if you didn't get one of the thanks I apologise. Thanks very much!
