Hi,
EDIT * I have found a solution in that I can connect via WI fi so that's pretty good but if anyone can help me with the USB issue, it would still be appreciated. It seems that the Wi Fi connection is more limited as I am unable to view things in explorer *
hoping to get some help using my USB to connect to my PC. I've installed Kies but when I try to connect to my PC it just keeps on trying to connect but never actually does it.
I have looked for guidance on this but keep coming across the instructions to go into 'about phone > USB settings' etc etc. However, I do not have a USB settings in about phone. In fact, there is nothing at all about USB in About Phone. I do have a 'USB Utilities' in Wireless and Networks but all that gives me the option to do is 'Connect Storage to PC'. I have a memory card in my phone.
When I do connect to the USB cable, with Kies open, when windows 'finds new hardware' it keeps saying a problem occurred during installation.
Please can anyone help me out? All I want to do is basically drag and drop some files from my PC to my phone. Thanks very much for your help.
Settings --> Applications -- Development --> USB debugging.
Thanks for that!
It got me a little further. I also unmounted then remounted the SD card. However, when I try to connect via kies I now get the message:
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to re click the USB settings on the phone before connecting to Kies now that it's installed the hardware on my PC?

Turn off USB-Debugging
Don't connect phone yet
Open Kies
Open the Tools menu -> Troubleshoot connection error
Go through the guide and let it reinstall the drivers.
Connect you phone, and let it connect
The default setting has the USB debugging tick greyed out. When I select it, it asks me if I want to allow debugging.
Do you mean that I shouldn't allow debugging and then connect (after reinstalling Kies) or should I allow it and connect? Sorry for my noobishness, Android is all completely new to me.
You should untick the USB-debugging - Then reinstall drivers NOT entire Kies
OK, it's unticked and I'm reinstalling the drivers via troubleshooting.
Do I need to unmount then remount the SD card before connecting my phone? Thanks for your help btw.
Shouldn't make a difference
Bah, I still have the same problem. It just says that there was a problem installing the hardware when I plugged in the phone.
After reinstalling the drivers, i shut down Kies then reopened it. I then plugged in the USB and then plugged the USB into my phone.
When I first installed Kies yesterday, Microsoft Active Sync kept on trying to activate and ask for a CD. It kept on holding up Kies. In the end I uninstalled Active Sync. Also, I still have Samsung PC Studio on my PC from when I had a Samsung a few years ago. It was one of those old slider phones, not a smart phone. Could that be part of the problem? I was hoping to keep it because it's proved to have the best media player I've ever had.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
Try without restarting Kies.
What part of the drivers aren't installed? (Check device manager)
In Device Manager, under Portable Devices there's something called Android MTP that has an exclamation mark next to it. It says it's not configured correctly and that 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'. I'll reinstall the Kies drivers now.
Thanks for this help mljjlm
P.S. Now that I've unplugged the phone, the MTP thing isn't showing in the device manager list anymore.

Of course, it's a part of the phone, and it should not be plugged in because they would have to force a reboot when reinstalling drivers (which might sort your problem btw)
Reinstalled the Kies Drivers and then plugged in my phone but got the same problem. It says a problem occurred. Same device now has a problem in device manager. Maybe I should just uninstall everything and restart? Should I uninstall the old PC studio too?
Just try the reboot without uninstalling anything and then plug the phone in when your pc has booted
Argh! Still didn't work! I think there must be a problem with my PC, well, I'll try doing full uninstalls and reinstall it all. I have to go now as well so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Thanks very much for your patience mljjlm. It has been greatly appreciated
Are you trying to just transfer files back and forth? If so... forget using Kies.
(I don't have a micro-USB cable with me currently, so this is all from memory)
Just remove the drivers from your device manager so it's like your machine has never seen your phone before. Then on your phone enable usb-debugging.
When you then plug in your phone, you should get a usb icon up top on your phone's display... pull the window-shade down and click on the USB connection button. You should get a fullscreen window on your phone that says something like USB Connection with the friendly android waiving.
Now your PC should see your phone as a standard USB mass storage device.
try plugging the usb cable in another usb port on your computer and than try again.

You're using Kies, that's what you're doing wrong. You said in your very first post you wanted to be able to drag and drop some files from your PC to your phone, so use USB debugging (say yes when it asks you) and Windows Explorer.
If you are using a custom rom like Checkrom Revolution you will need to install the kies support from kitchen pro.
Also are you using the cable that came with your phone?
I have found a few microUSB cables that will allow charge and wont allow data transfer like the new ones for nokia devices and some blackberrys.
It worked! The USB debugging thing!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. The forum said I was limited to 5 thanks per day so if you didn't get one of the thanks I apologise. Thanks very much!

My Vibrant doesn't connect as a data storage device around the time I started using Kies. My phone is 100% stock beyond some attempts to fix the GPS (which didn't work and returned to stock). I installed Kies to do USB tethering and changed the setting on the phone to ask in which mode I want to connect.
Last week I was having trouble with connecting in Kies mode and tethering. I then noticed that I could only connect to the PC when I selected the phone option for Kies and not as a media player or storage device. I proceeded to uninstall Kies from my PC to see if that fixed the drivers. No go. I tried another PC which has never had Kies on it and also no go.
Here are the symptoms:
1) Plug USB cable to Phone
2) Menu on phone shows: Select Kies, Media Player or Storage
3) Select Storage
4) USB symbol appears and goes through connecting to connected state
Normally at this point the Win7 PC will pop-up with an auto start window asking if you want to open the storage device or transfer photos. In my case nothing appears. I also check My Computer and the phone is not mounted it doesn't appear later. I suspect a phone issue. Is there a way to fix this without doing a factory reset? Reboot doesn't change anything.
Anyone know a fix for this problem?
Make sure to use these drivers

Stupid question, but are you pressing "mount" on your phone when your in USB storage mode?
note to self: read OP *before* replying
If it's still set on Ask on Selection try changing it to Mass Storage. I recall reading something that said Ask on Selection doesn't work right. I just toggle it between Mass Storage and Kies manually.

Changed to Developer Mode USB and forced reinstall of the drivers. Thanks for your help guys.
For those of you having a problem with Windows 7 recognizing your Vibrant ... here is how I fixed it on my system.
*Note: You do not need to load any special USB drivers for your phone to be recognized in Mass Storage mode in Windows 7.
*Warning: You follow these instructions at your own risk ... no screaming at me if you try it and something gets screwed up!
1) Navigate your way into the Device Manager / Universal Serial Bus Controller
2) Uninstall the device(s) "USB Root Hub" (My system had 2 listed)
3) You will lose mouse and keyboard control (because you just removed the USB Hubs)
4) Reset your PC and allow Windows to boot normally.
5) Go back to the device manager and wait for all of the "!" marks to go away as windows re-installs the USB Hubs and reinitializes all of your devices.
6) Make sure your Vibrant is in mass storage mode and has USB debugging OFF
7) Plug in your Vibrant via the USB cable and be amazed as windows recognizes your device and assigns the drive letters. After you select the mount option on your phone you will have normal access via windows explorer.
Hope this helps some of you out there !!!

Thanks. I am having this problem right now. I used to work. now all of the sudden it just stopped connecting. But i have a clarification questions. when you say remove the usb root hub, do you mean uninstall or disable?
Thanks.
I had the same problem after flashing JI6 via ODIN (after softbricking a la t-mobile ota), but I was able to fix it by enabling the prompt to ask what to do every time usb was connected, and then changing it back to treating it as mass storage. I read this suggestion in another forum (don't remember where) and it helped with mine.
I had no trouble before the update, it just started right after.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It should say uninstall. You want to force windows to reinstall the devices.
I know this thread is old but if you change your view in device manager to view by connection you can find which root hub to uninstall and then re-install. This happened randomly when I was trying to update my epic and I didn't have to re-start because it was only the front ports root hub that was having the problem. Thanks for the help.
My PC won't find my Wildfire. The problem I have is that it recognices my phone as a "unknown usb device" and I won't be able to transfer stuff between the SD-card and the PC (very annoying as I can't really move music).
I'm running Cyanogen Mod (the stable released 12th of december but had this problem for a while now). It's rooted with unrevoked and the HBOOT usb drivers won't work (reinstalled vista on my pc).
So what should I do?
When you plug your wildfire in, up in the top left hand corner(on the notification bar) you should see two little icons pop-up, One will be telling you that you have connected your phone to a power source and it is now charging, the other allows you to turn on usb file transfer.
Drag down you notification bar and click the one that says something like "file transfer" and it should open a new window... there should be a button at the bottom of the page which allows you to toggle the file transferring on and off, remember to turn it off before you take your phone out, or it will bug the next time and you'll have to reboot your phone and your pc to get it working
Hope this helps,
note* if this doesn't work there is a driver you can download which might make it recognise it, but I believe the above solution should work for you!
Edit:
If you still can't find it i'll upload a screenshot when I get home
try installing the hboot drivers again.
that solved it for me when my phone wouldn't be recognised, funny thing was it stopped recognising after i was charging my auntie's ipod. LOL
I would reinstall the drivers but it doesn't show up as a "Android Device" (or what it's called) in device manager.
I don't even have HBOOT USB as an option on the bootscreen. (with the USB plugged in)
UPDATE: Installed and uninstalled HTC Sync to get the drivers. Still an unknown usb device on which I can't install the special HBOOT drivers and still no HBOOT USB on boot screen even when plugged in.
If your phone is rooted, HTC sync could be your problem.
Had the same problem.
This is how I solved it, from the HTC support page:
Tips 1:
If you cannot see the HTC Sync option when you connect your phone to the computer via USB, please follow the
Instructions below:
1. Make sure you select USB Debugging in Settings > Applications > Development before connecting your phone to the computer
2. Connect you Phone to the PC and wait 20 seconds for your phone to install HTC Sync on your phone.
3. Unplug the USB sync cable. Wait for 5 seconds. Reconnect the Phone to the PC using the USB cable.
4. Select “HTC sync” and wait for HTC Sync to recognize your Phone. This process could take up to a minute your first
time connecting to the computer.

Or just install pdanet on both computer and phone, it will automatically install the drivers too. After that you can easily uninstall pdanet from both computer and phone, the drivers will stay installed.
hello, I had the same problem, cm since I upgraded to, I can not sync my windows with wildfire, and I found an alternative way to synchronize your PC and the wildfire MyPhoneExplorer excellent! really good!
I'm having the same problem, I can't access my Wildfire through my PC.
My PC recognizes the device but I can't access the SD-Card as it says 'Please insert a disk'. It's just charging, no option to establish a connection to the disk drive.
I tried several things, including the USB-debug mode which didn't work out. With MyPhoneExplorer I have a connection to my phone (can see calls, messages and memory status) but when I want to view the files on my SD-Card it pops up an error message saying "OBEX protocol couldn't be initalized! Phone didn't answer'.
Please help me how to connect my Wildfire again!

Hi All,
I've tried everything, including the usb drivers from the root guide and installing the Samsung Kies Mini program, but I can't get Windows to recognize the memory on the device. I want to transfer some movies on the Galaxy and have not been able to figure it out.
When I run the Kies software it says "plug in your usb" and when I plug in the Galaxy nothing happens...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
It should work by just plugging in the usb/connector cable. You don't need Kies (doesnt support the 10.1 anyway right now)
When your pc does not recognize your tab, something is fishy about your pc/ usb.
USB connection should work:
(Autoplay should pop up
Select open device to connect (GT-P7510)
Click on phone
Select directory to copy file to)
Sounds like a PC problem. (Look in device manager and see if your USB controllers are ok)
Looked at Device Manager, no issues under USB.
Comes up as an Android phone...
forget the cable...
try 'Samba Fileshare' app free from the Market.
Connect to your 10.1 over WiFi and send files to it via the shared folder it creates.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.funkyfresh.samba&feature=search_result
Worked fine for me without installing anything.
On another note, the Kies software does seem to somewhat support the 10.1 as it installed the required adb drivers when I chose it from the menu.
im having problems too.... for now I am using dropbox.
I have a shared folder on my PC and use ES File Explorer over Wifi, it's simple and works a treat. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&feature=search_result

I had to disable USB Debugging to get mine to pop up. Took me a while.
Oh thank God I am not the only one having this problem,,, i have tried every driver combo out there plus leaving USB debugging off and still i get nothing on my windows 7 machine. I have tried three different machines and all the same so it is not a computer issue i think it is a driver issue or a interface with the tab????
Interesting thing though is that I can push via ADB all day it that connects easy!!! WTF?????

Same problem here.. LG doesnt take care of such things.. no wonder Samsung is taking the market..
I just connected my AT&T v20 to my aliensware 15r2 laptop and was able to import my pics with no issues setting my phone to ptp. Then to access both the internal storage and sd card through file manager I set phone to mtp.
I did nothing special just plugged in phone to laptop and selected what setting on the phone. Oh and running win 10. So don't think its the phones software but maybe your computer missing certain drivers or something. So hope this helps

Anyone have issues after applying liquid spray for a screen protector? I just finished applying and now whenever I connect the phone LG V20 it still thinks its connected to usb. I restarted phone and it went into update firmware connection screen. I had to get into recovery and clear dalvik and cache and it rebooted and everything is working again. I transferred files from PC and again the same issue. Could it be liquid damage? Or is this something else? Thank you.
You'll need to turn on the Developer Option and then scroll down to Select USB Configuration > MTP > ok This is what I did to enable my desktop to read my LG V20 SD Card and memory.
Could it be a cable issue? I was warned once.
In fact, looks like nothing happens on my pc but I can browse the internal memory n sd card.
