Here is what I did. After using the shift for a couple of months and swaping my sim out of my treo 750 to and from the shift. Which was a pain. Then I started using our corporate sim from the laptop card which works as a backup for our stores DSL/POS system, but I can't travel with that because it is for our backup system. I found another way after reading a post somewhere else.
I went to an AT&T authorized rep. store and bought a go phone. Then I added $100 to the phone which keeps the sim active for 365 days. I then had them add the "Unlimited Medianet" package to the go phone. Basically unlimited data. That costs $20 a month and I don't need to use any minutes for voice. So with the phone itself I get $20 credit on the account, I bought a $100 addon with which I get an additional $5 for ordering that and I come out with a new samsung gophone with a camera, six months of prepaid unlimited internet and no contracts. All for a grand total of $185 with fees, setup charges, and the $30 gophone. So, in six months I have to add another $100 to the sim card and that should get me another 5 to 6 months of service. Depending if they still throw in an additional $5 to the $100 prepaid card I will buy. I currently have $105 of credit after the first $20 was taken off of the card/account. They will charge my account $20 every month until it is used up.
My only concern is if they are tracking exactly how much data I am using on this card. They could turn it off on me but they can't go after me for additional charges because it is a prepaid card and there is no contract. I did use my credit card to do it but I could have paid for it with cash and not had any ties to myself at all. Anyway, the most they can do is to cancel the sim or start charging me a lot more.
Does anyone else have something better?
Hi,
I have a general data plan from T-M USA, where I pay 29.99 for unlimited data. However the plan is part of unlimited voice minutes that were grandfathered from the Voicestream days.
Any change and I use the unlimited limits....
So I opted to buy the myTouch at a full price from expansys.com - they had the us radio version - but when I insert the SIM, I am getting the error - please upgrade the data plan...
Is there any way around it (ROM flash, hack etc.) or is this really done server side and the SIM will just not work in myTouch?
I have 5 days to return it -20% restocking fee - I paid 549 for a paper weight right now - well I can make calls and SMS but no data...
Thx.
is your plan a single rate plan or a family rate plan? the unlimited data feature for the mytouch is only 24.99. how much is your unlimited minute plan that is grandfathered? chances are if you've been with the company since voicestream then you qualify for the unlimited loyalty plan that is only 49.99 for single line or 89.99 for a family plan with 2 lines. i would call customer care and have them fix you up!
It's part of a company plan - we have 10 lines under that plan and for the 29.99$ data portion we get laptop tether...
I talked to our sales rep - we either change all of the 10 lines or no changes at all so calling customer service will not fix it for me :-(
call tmobile and tell them you want it unlocked being that you payed full price for it they will unlock it for you then you can root the phone after that you should be good to go.
OK, what steps should I take to root it and after I root what is next - link to some reading would be great...
Thx.

I have a 3g Xoom that I never activated (just use Wifi). I'm moving next month and think it would be useful to have the xoom with me when I go to find a house and do all that other stuff that you need internet for. I think what I'll need it for is mostly just craigslist, google maps, and email.
Does anyone have any experience using their xoom with a prepaid verizon data plan, or some other plan that will not require a contract? Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: So, called both Verizon and Best Buy (that's where this Xoom was purchased). The Verizon rep didn't know what a "zoom" is and said I could sign up for a 1 or 2 year plan. She also couldn't find my MEID# in their system. The Best Buy person wanted to help but didn't get that I only want 1 or 2 months. He also suggested I set it up with AT&T. How do these people feed themselves?
Okay, go in to a Verizon store with your Xoom in hand, tell them you want a Month to Month plan, I forget there exact term for it, but they should understand. Its not pre-paided, Verizon only offers pre-paided data with smartphones (odd? I think so too) its month to month because you aren't on contract but pay a monthly bill that you can cancel at anytime without consiquence , except that there is a 15$ re-activation fee you have to pay when you turn it back on. There reason behind this is that they assign your Xoom a phone number to be able to link it to their network (odd? I know). So basically you want a month to month plan, but you must go into a verizon store to do this, try to pick a bigger one rather than a smaller local one, so the people aren't doing this for their first time. And just a note, stay in the store after its activated and get them to call customer service so they can issue you a password to sign into their website. In order to sign into their website the first time you need to use your new phone number, and have them text you an initial password. Well since Xooms aren't phones and don't receive text messages on the number Verizon assigns you, you won't get the text message and there for won't be able to get your password to sign in. If the Verizon rep calls the customer service on the phone, they can get them to issue a temporary password to sign you in on spot with your Xoom like they did for me, if you don't do it this way, and try to do it thru the website or customer service without a Verizon Rep calling for you, you will be forced to wait for them to mail you the temporary password. Which some have reported long wait times in this forum after the initial launch. And you'll want to be able to sign in to their site to be able to track your data consumption.

OHHHHH and I forgot the most important part!!!!!!
THEY WILL RUN A CREDIT CHECK AND POSSIBLY MAKE YOU PAY A SECURITY DEPOSIT OF UP TO 400 USD IF YOU HAVE BAD CREDIT.(odd? I know)
Even though your not signing a contract, your not signing up for pre payed, so they will run the credit check.
If your not sure just go try, my girlfriends credit isn't great but she didn't have to pay anything to put data on my xoom. They tried to charge me $400, but that's because me and my dad have the same name, and he screwed my credit over before I even turned 18.

Thanks Tommy!
Do you use wireless tethering with your service? Is there a restriction on tethering to a laptop? How much data do I need (it will be for email, craigslist, GPS, google chat, light web)?
I appreciate your help!
I pm'd you. I work for VZW and can hook it up easy. Plans are $20 for 1gb, $35 for 3gb, $50 for 5gb. You could probably get by on the 3gb plan and can always bump it up. The tethering is unlimited and just goes against the allowance.

Not understanding how tethering is "unlimited" if it is charged against a plan. For example, if I had a 1gb plan, tethered and used 1.2 gb, won't I get charged for going over?

The prepaid plan is not available for the Xoom. After receiving my 4G upgrade, I call Verizon and was transferred 3 times while the different departments tried to figure everything out. Basically, Verizon's website shows that Tablets have a prepaid plan, but they don't specify what tablets are supported. Based on their website, all tablets are supported, but that isn't the case. They told me that 4G plans aren't supported for prepay. I was really looking forward to activating my Xoom, but I only wanted prepaid since it costs the same as the month-to-month minus any activation, overages, and reconnect fees.
I was planning on only having my service active when I needed it for work. If I choose the month-to-month plan, I will have to pay an activation fee every time I need to reactivate it. I really hope they update their website to reflect this information as I was very disappointed to learn this information over the phone. They tried to sell me a mobile hotspot, but I was not interested as I already tether my Xoom to my Sprint 4G phone.
Im on their early $20 1gb plan, that I know of I'm not on contract but I didn't want to pay the Sept bill cuz of the 4lte update so I didnt pay and thought they just cut it off till you pay for the next month but I got charged that month and a late fee.

I'm not on Verizon, but I do know that they have an option where you can "suspend" your account for a period of time where you don't have to pay.

You can suspend for up to 90 days at a time. Just need to make sure to go online or call in to re-suspend it afterwards if you want it suspended longer (technically you can do that the same day and have it suspended as long as you want).
VZW did, however, just start offering actual prepaid data on tablets literally a few days ago. Prices are $20 = 1GB, $30 = 3GB, $50 = 5GB, and $80 = 10GB and $35 activation.
IMHO the postpaid plans are a much better way to go because you can turn it on and off whenever and prorate your data usage and only have to pay an activation once. With prepaid the account will go inactive after a certain period of time and you will have to pay another activation fee to reconnect it. Only downside to postpaid is the credit check.

Odd, but I've been on the 5GB plan since new in May. I never use that much, so just went to the Verizon Wireless web site. I'm on a post-paid plan and was only presented with these options:
2GB for $30, 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80. It's odd that this doesn't seem to reflect what others are seeing, so I'll go into the store at some point.

I know that you work for Verizon and hoped that you could clear some things up about Xoom prepaid plans. You state that there is an activation fee with prepaid data on tablets, but the this page states the following under "Prepaid Mobile Broadband/Tablets":
No activation or reconnection fees, and no overage charges.

So is there or isn't there an activation fee?
Are you familiar with or know much about the new Xoom system update (HLK75F) that enables a prepaid 4g option on the Xoom? See this thread and the attached pdf.
I already applied the HLK75F update, but when I go to "Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile Networks/Verizon data service", it takes me to a "Mobile Broadband quick access" page in the browser. The page states:
Please try again or contact us to complete your order. Sorry! We are unable to complete your order online at this time. Please try again later or contact customer service at 800-786-8419 (18079782).

Is this error because I don't have a Verizon account and my Xoom isn't registered with the network? Fyi, I did have the LTE upgrade performed and my sim card is installed.
Is this something that you could assist me with? I want to have the option of using prepaid data on the Xoom without any contract, credit check, or activation fees. Thanks.
I to would like this without the pathetic credit check
Note: - This guide only works for new T-Mobile prepaid activation and with T-Mobile HTC One device.
Introduction: T-Mobile has the hidden $30 prepaid plan that has 100 talk minutes, unlimited text and 5GB data with 4G speed. This is the cheapest plan for prepaid IMHO. I have tested the data speed in Rochester, MN (not a refarmed 1900Mhz area), and the results are 16Mps download and 5Mps upload. You can transfer your number from other carrier (Straight Talk etc.) with this new activation. There is no activation fee. I haven't experienced any drop call or technical issue. The coverage is really good in Minnesota.
What you need to get started:
1. Activation kit (aka sim card). You can buy the activation kit from T-Mobile or Bestbuy store for 15 bucks, then print out this template (Link: http://bit.ly/TMaxwM) and cut it to micro sim. Keep the simcard card or write down the simcard number.
2. Buy a T-Mobile refill card from Walmart/Bestbuy (Link: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357) for first month. Keep the PIN number
3. A T-Mobile HTC One. You don't need to unlock the SIM. I paid full price for my device. It came flawlessly without any imperfections
Step-by-step process:
- Put the micro simcard that you cut (1) into the phone.
- In the activation kit, there is a activation card that has the activation code (11 digits number). You need this number.
- Go to www.t-mobile.com/prepaidactivation and follow the instruction (you simply put the simcard number and activation code)
(Note: if you don't have the device yet, you can type 9999999999)
- If you need to port your number from other carrier, don't forget to click on the option on the right. It took me 7-8 hours to get my number ported from ST to T-Mobile.
(Note: For Straight Talk Bring Your Own Device users, the account number is the simcard number from ST)
- After you submit, you now can choose your plan. Pick the $30 plan for 100 minutes + Unlimited text/data (5G with 4G speed).
- The last step is to fund your account for the first month. Take the PIN number from the refill card (2) and type it in.
Then, you are done. T-Mobile will send a confirmation email after you finish the process. If you choose a new number, you can use it instantly. If you want to port your number, it will take no more than 24 hours to get the number ported.
If you have any problem or concern with the porting process, call this number 877-789-3106. This is the T-Mobile department in charge for porting number. They can assist you and tell you when your number is ready to use. :good:
Enjoy your new phone and awesome (but affordable) service with T-Mobile
P/S: My device came with locked bootloader. I followed this instruction (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618) to unlock bootloader/ flash new recovery and new ROM. I am using ARHD 8.1 ROM, and it works perfectly on T-Mobile. The Wifi calling feature is working with this ROM too. Many thanks to mike1986

Great post! I got the $30 prepaid plan with the 64gb Developer Edition and I am loving it.
Speeds are excellent eventhough I am not in an LTE city. Way faster than the crappy speeds I was getting under Sprint.
So happy I just ditched them to get away from Contracts forever!!
Got a $100 bill for the ETF which will be canceled out by the $100 Visa Giftcard from the HTC "buyback program" my old GS2.
Perfect!!
You can also buy the refill card from Amazon for cheap
Is there anyway to do this if I'm already a T-Mobile customer?

I am unsure about the 3rd party sellers whom are selling the refill card on Amazon. Some of them don't have any feedbacks, but couple of them have more than 100 feedbacks from last year. You buy at your own risk though
I am definitely interested in doing this! Thanks so much for making this guide. Can you tell me where you bought your phone and how much it cost? I was planning on getting the Dev edition, but I'm not in a refarmed area so I need the 1700 mhz band ability. Where's the best/cheapest place to buy the T-Mobile version without a contract?
Also, did you unlock the bootloader/ flash new recovery and new ROM before or after activating it?
Lastly, how did you get the wifi calling to work? That would help a lot since I would only have 100minutes. Is it an app or...?
Thanks!

- I bought it directly from T-Mobile via telesale. Price is $580 + tax + shipping (if you choose overnight).
- I unlocked and flashed new ROM right after I activated the prepaid account.
- Wifi calling works immediately after your account is activated.
- I have used GrooveIP to make phone call on wifi or 4G network. It uses Google Voice number
how much?
How much for the total of your htc one tmobile?

Guys, I would suggest you port your number to Google Voice. Then you can port it back to Tmobile after you start the new $30 a month prepaid account. Or you could keep the number with Google Voice if you like.
Either way, it's a way to keep your number.
Here is a really informative thread on this plan: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646755
That thread is for the Galaxy Nexus and this plan, but there still is a ton of relevant info there.
Also, I recommend Callingmart for your refills. Here's a link:

I just purchased the HTC One over the phone. They had to put me on the $50 postpaid plan to start, in order for me to purchase the phone, but said I could switch to prepaid when I receive the phone. I'll call them once the phone arrives. Do you think I'll be able to switch to prepaid with the SIM card that comes with the phone, or will I need to purchase the prepaid SIM card from T-Mobile's website?

Yes I did pay full price. So I should just immediately call and cancel the postpaid plan before I use that SIM and they won't charge me the $50? And I should buy the Prepaid SIM kit and just go to the online prepaid activation site?
I did this a month ago with my HTC One. Bought the phone from T-Mobile store, paid it in full, signed up for the cheapest post-paid plan, the $50 one. I also paid for that at the same time as the phone. I was running off of that plan for about 6 hours and then I called T-Mobile to get switched to the $30 5gb plan. After about 10 minutes of talking to the low-level customer service rep, they were saying I couldn't switch to the plan because it is technically Walmart's plan and not T-Mobile's. I knew it was completely not true, so I spoke to that person's supervisor and he immediately switched me over to the $30 plan, with maybe a couple of minutes of switching time after the phone call. After that, all was good, my original $50 payment was still valid and it was used by the $30 plan, so I had a $20 remaining balance in my account that I use in case I go over my minutes. After you go over your 100 minutes, it's 10cents a minute after that so long as you have money in your T-Mobile account. My first month of the service is about to be over in 4 days and I only spent $6 (60 minutes) of my $20 balance on my account.
So for entire bill for the first month will be under $40 assuming I don't talk on the phone for more than 40 minutes between now and Friday 5/24.
* I also went out of town to bumblef*ck North Carolina and I was getting zero service in the mountains, like everyone else, but slightly worse service where AT&T users were getting data and I wasn't. But that all changed when I had WiFi calling in the cabin, and nobody else had that option. So I was still gettings calls and texts, whereas everyone else had to wait until they were on the drive home and got service again.

Thanks for the reply! Glad to hear it's working well for you. So you seemed to be able to switch from postpaid to prepaid over the phone even with the regular SIM card. I already bought the prepaid SIM kit so I'll probably just go straight through activating with that SIM and not even use the SIM that comes with the phone. I should probably also call to cancel the postpaid account just in case. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and I'll have the $30 plan on the HTC One and be able to transfer my phone number.
That's great to hear about the Wifi calling feature too. So it allows for calls and texts? That's great to hear if I'm in an area with no coverage. When I'm at home, should I also use wifi calling? Better voice quality?
I have a family plan with 5 lines, mine the only one which has unlimited data with GS3 still on it. One of the dumbphone lines was eligible for an upgrade, and I used it to get an GS3 with the idea of activating it on the dumbphone line, then activating the dumbphone again on the said line (removing $30 data) and swapping my GS3 SIM with GNote's, thus activating GN3 on the unlimited line. I ordered the phone online, used the Verizon30 coupon so the price ended up just north of $200. The phone came in two days ago, but I was too chicken to go ahead with activation without 100% confirmation that I will not lose unlimited data. I went to my Verizon retailer (not the corporate store, but just an official retailer in NYC). When I tried to run the above by the rep, he told me that I should not have ordered the phone online but from him, as he has access to some sort of "internal system" process that would guarantee that I would not unlimited data. He even put a phone aside for me (would not match the online Verizon price), telling me if I did it my way Verizon may pull the unlimited data irreversibly and no one, himself included, would be able to get it back. I thought what he told me was a bunch of BS, and really don't want to pay another $80-90 to buy the phone from him + pay Verizon restocking fee if that is the case. Found this online, that describes the dumbphone upgrade transfer process (but with an iPhone5s, should not make a difference):
http://www.dimascorner.com/2013/iphone5s-upgrade/
Basically, would like to hear from those who successfully transferred their dumbphone upgrade by buying the phone online, and can point me in the right direction. I want to start using this awesome phone! but don't want to risk losing unlimited data.

activate the new phone on the dumbphone line...then do an esn swap online back to the dumbphone(you will have to add a 75mb data plan) the just swap out the SIM card from the unlimited line to the new phone. then call customer service to have the 75mb data dropped from the dumbphone line. ive done this a ton of times and did it with my note 3 and wives s4

activate the new phone on the dumbphone line...then do an esn swap online back to the dumbphone(you will have to add a 75mb data plan) the just swap out the SIM card from the unlimited line to the new phone. then call customer service to have the 75mb data dropped from the dumbphone line. ive done this a ton of times and did it with my note 3 and wives s4
