verizon prepaid on xoom 3g - Xoom General

I have a 3g Xoom that I never activated (just use Wifi). I'm moving next month and think it would be useful to have the xoom with me when I go to find a house and do all that other stuff that you need internet for. I think what I'll need it for is mostly just craigslist, google maps, and email.
Does anyone have any experience using their xoom with a prepaid verizon data plan, or some other plan that will not require a contract? Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: So, called both Verizon and Best Buy (that's where this Xoom was purchased). The Verizon rep didn't know what a "zoom" is and said I could sign up for a 1 or 2 year plan. She also couldn't find my MEID# in their system. The Best Buy person wanted to help but didn't get that I only want 1 or 2 months. He also suggested I set it up with AT&T. How do these people feed themselves?

Okay, go in to a Verizon store with your Xoom in hand, tell them you want a Month to Month plan, I forget there exact term for it, but they should understand. Its not pre-paided, Verizon only offers pre-paided data with smartphones (odd? I think so too) its month to month because you aren't on contract but pay a monthly bill that you can cancel at anytime without consiquence , except that there is a 15$ re-activation fee you have to pay when you turn it back on. There reason behind this is that they assign your Xoom a phone number to be able to link it to their network (odd? I know). So basically you want a month to month plan, but you must go into a verizon store to do this, try to pick a bigger one rather than a smaller local one, so the people aren't doing this for their first time. And just a note, stay in the store after its activated and get them to call customer service so they can issue you a password to sign into their website. In order to sign into their website the first time you need to use your new phone number, and have them text you an initial password. Well since Xooms aren't phones and don't receive text messages on the number Verizon assigns you, you won't get the text message and there for won't be able to get your password to sign in. If the Verizon rep calls the customer service on the phone, they can get them to issue a temporary password to sign you in on spot with your Xoom like they did for me, if you don't do it this way, and try to do it thru the website or customer service without a Verizon Rep calling for you, you will be forced to wait for them to mail you the temporary password. Which some have reported long wait times in this forum after the initial launch. And you'll want to be able to sign in to their site to be able to track your data consumption.

THEY WILL RUN A CREDIT CHECK AND POSSIBLY MAKE YOU PAY A SECURITY DEPOSIT OF UP TO 400 USD IF YOU HAVE BAD CREDIT.(odd? I know)
Even though your not signing a contract, your not signing up for pre payed, so they will run the credit check.
If your not sure just go try, my girlfriends credit isn't great but she didn't have to pay anything to put data on my xoom. They tried to charge me $400, but that's because me and my dad have the same name, and he screwed my credit over before I even turned 18.

Do you use wireless tethering with your service? Is there a restriction on tethering to a laptop? How much data do I need (it will be for email, craigslist, GPS, google chat, light web)?

I pm'd you. I work for VZW and can hook it up easy. Plans are $20 for 1gb, $35 for 3gb, $50 for 5gb. You could probably get by on the 3gb plan and can always bump it up. The tethering is unlimited and just goes against the allowance.

Not understanding how tethering is "unlimited" if it is charged against a plan. For example, if I had a 1gb plan, tethered and used 1.2 gb, won't I get charged for going over?

The prepaid plan is not available for the Xoom. After receiving my 4G upgrade, I call Verizon and was transferred 3 times while the different departments tried to figure everything out. Basically, Verizon's website shows that Tablets have a prepaid plan, but they don't specify what tablets are supported. Based on their website, all tablets are supported, but that isn't the case. They told me that 4G plans aren't supported for prepay. I was really looking forward to activating my Xoom, but I only wanted prepaid since it costs the same as the month-to-month minus any activation, overages, and reconnect fees.
I was planning on only having my service active when I needed it for work. If I choose the month-to-month plan, I will have to pay an activation fee every time I need to reactivate it. I really hope they update their website to reflect this information as I was very disappointed to learn this information over the phone. They tried to sell me a mobile hotspot, but I was not interested as I already tether my Xoom to my Sprint 4G phone.

Im on their early $20 1gb plan, that I know of I'm not on contract but I didn't want to pay the Sept bill cuz of the 4lte update so I didnt pay and thought they just cut it off till you pay for the next month but I got charged that month and a late fee.

I'm not on Verizon, but I do know that they have an option where you can "suspend" your account for a period of time where you don't have to pay.

You can suspend for up to 90 days at a time. Just need to make sure to go online or call in to re-suspend it afterwards if you want it suspended longer (technically you can do that the same day and have it suspended as long as you want).
VZW did, however, just start offering actual prepaid data on tablets literally a few days ago. Prices are $20 = 1GB, $30 = 3GB, $50 = 5GB, and $80 = 10GB and $35 activation.
IMHO the postpaid plans are a much better way to go because you can turn it on and off whenever and prorate your data usage and only have to pay an activation once. With prepaid the account will go inactive after a certain period of time and you will have to pay another activation fee to reconnect it. Only downside to postpaid is the credit check.

Odd, but I've been on the 5GB plan since new in May. I never use that much, so just went to the Verizon Wireless web site. I'm on a post-paid plan and was only presented with these options:
2GB for $30, 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80. It's odd that this doesn't seem to reflect what others are seeing, so I'll go into the store at some point.

I know that you work for Verizon and hoped that you could clear some things up about Xoom prepaid plans. You state that there is an activation fee with prepaid data on tablets, but the this page states the following under "Prepaid Mobile Broadband/Tablets":
No activation or reconnection fees, and no overage charges.

Are you familiar with or know much about the new Xoom system update (HLK75F) that enables a prepaid 4g option on the Xoom? See this thread and the attached pdf.
I already applied the HLK75F update, but when I go to "Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile Networks/Verizon data service", it takes me to a "Mobile Broadband quick access" page in the browser. The page states:

Is this error because I don't have a Verizon account and my Xoom isn't registered with the network? Fyi, I did have the LTE upgrade performed and my sim card is installed.
Is this something that you could assist me with? I want to have the option of using prepaid data on the Xoom without any contract, credit check, or activation fees. Thanks.

[Q] Web2go and Samsung Vibrant?

I was just wondering if anybody has personally been able to use their grandfathered $10 web2go data plan with their new samsung vibrant? I was able to use it on my old wm phones with the right apn settings but I'm not sure if it's the same in android. If you have gotten it to work, I would really appreciate it if you could post your apn settings because so far all the ones I've tried online haven't worked for me.
All of those grandfathered plans work -- for about six hours. I was using T-Zones on my iPhone, which worked on my Vibrant until my account updated. Once T-Mo updates your profile with the IEMI number of the device, they cut off your access and forward your phone to an obnoxious 'Upgrade To The Android Data Plan' message.
If they didn't have your phone registered in their database, you could continue to use your grandfathered plan (which you should be able to do anyway, to be honest).
And then, of course, you're asked to pay $30/mo for an 'unlimited' data plan that actually has a 3G cap of 10GB. Once you reach that threshold, you're throttled to EDGE.
Meanwhile, Sprint and Verizon have truly unlimited data for phones, for the exact same price.
If Verizon still has their unlimited data package when their GSM network rolls out for LTE, I know where I'm going...
If u talk to customer loyality you can get the grandfathered $20 / mon data plan. I know it's not the $10 plan but atleast it's not the $30 plan. I talked to them and they let me use that plan, just make sure you request them to add-on the visual voicemail option if you use the TMo one since it won't work off hand w/out it added on as an option (this add-on is free).
No direct experience with the $10 plan, but I had the way old 5.99 T-zones that allowed a proxy setting to get full 'net access on a symbian phone. It worked for a few hours with my first android then was blocked. I stuck my brother's SIM whose account had the same proxy 'net access with no monthly fee and it worked with android for a few hours as well.
Seems as if T-Mo is detecting android phones on the network and actually enforcing a data plan requirement.
I've read numerous posts at the official T-mobile forums and beyond a couple of phones like the Samsung Behold, no Android phone and certainly no upper-range Android phone that is branded by T-mobile (they have the IMEI numbers blocked) will work with the $5.99 T-zones or the $10 web2go plan. The only options are the $30 (EM) / $25 (EM+) Android data plan or the preferred version for loyal customers, which is $5 cheaper.

Or the $19.99 plan if u call in and talk to retentions they can add it there. Did it there with no issues.

Well I tried calling several times but no such luck on getting through to the customer loyalty department thus far. Is there some special password or buzzword to talk to these guys? Although truth be told I've only been with tmobile since 2007. Is that a long enough time to qualify for this preferred plan? I really love how tmobile screws us android users over. It's no wonder as to how they're losing customers and yet still gaining revenue...
You have to say that you're thinking about moving to a different carrier, and you'd like to be transferred to the customer retention department.
I brought up the Sprint $70/mo unlimited plan (450 landline minuts, unlimited cell minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data). I was able to negotiate unlimited minutes (regardless) and unlimited data for $70 (I declined texts because GVoice is free, and texting is stupid anyway).

I think I'm just gonna return the vibrant and use my hd2 until my contract ends in a couple months and then possibly buy the vibrant off contract. Perhaps by then they'll have actually bothered fixing the gps although I'm not holding my breath...
The only thing I don't understand is on the even more + plans it seems data is $20 a month in the bundle. Is this true for android phones as well? Or is there some special android data plan designated to milk us for more money?

Thanks, I think I can live without data for a month so I guess I'll switch to that plan when my contract's up. I may just use google voice for text since I don't even use it that often.
I was on grandfathered "Total Internet" and it worked for about three hours. Then I got IMEI intercepted. ****ers.
Anyway, called and raised hell, they switch the data to the Loyalty Android. Same price. I then went back to the HD2 and it didn't lock me even after several hours, so it appears that with Android Data you can switch between it and Windows Mobile, but with the old "Total Internet" you CANNOT use Android handsets.
Pretty stupid if you ask me, and I told them so, since there IS a $20 option that Loyalty can put on the account (if you qual for it, and if you have grandfathered data they should not object, since there's no reason for you to pay more and GET LESS.)

Interesting. And what would the qualifications for that plan be?
If you don't have Total Internet, you probably can't get swapped over. Total Internet was their old $20 unlimited (TRULY unlimited, not throttled) data plan.
I've been with T-Mo since it was Voicestream, and had Total Internet on my old Nokia 6161... with which I tethered! They did not want to see me leave, and I was quite willing to go to Sprint if I had to. It helped that I am off contract.
Damn. I've only been with with tmobile since 2007. Right around the same time at&t's network began bucking under the weight of the iphones really.

Considering you were with them for so long it would make sense for them to give you that deal but I only got about 3 years under my belt with them. Aw well, I'll give it another try anyways. Couldn't hurt right?
I've been with t-mobile for 3 months now...month to month everything plus plan. put my sim card in an old phone, added $10 web2go plan, swapped sim into vibrant, instantly needed to upgrade my data plan, I called t-mobile, when asked to say what I needed help with, I said 'cancel services', once I connected to a rep I told him I just added $10 plan, and now my vibrant wants me to upgrade again, he told me $10 more per month, so $20 data plan, now all is good, pretty simple

I went through customer loyalty. They gave me unlimited talk for $49.95 plus unlimited web and text for $35.00. That's $20 for unlimited web and $14.95 for unlimited texting. I quess that's a good deal. If not some one tell me! LOL! So I can call them again and haggle!

Ordered Sprint Galaxy Tab, few questions about my google account

Seems Sprint has the best overall deal, it was $400, no activation, $30/mo for 2GB, and I was able to use a $50 credit on my invoice (SAVE50).
My question is, should I create a new Gmail account for the device or should I use my current Droid Incredible Gmail account? Mainly for some apps I purchased I don't really see the need in getting them twice...
How have you guys set up your Tabs if you are already an Android user?
I'm also curious as to the status of making calls on the Sprint/VZW devices
I have several Android devices, and I use the same primary Google account on all of them for the very reason you describe.

Well, I know the Sprint one can make calls through Qik, whether it's over WiFi or 3G I don't know. Not a deal breaker to for the making calls part.
I used to be a T-Mobile customer, but they had horrible service here. When I try to buy it online it adds in an activation fee. I wonder if I called in they could waive it... but I don't need the 5GB per month, and 200MB for $25 is ****.

$299 for Atrix w/ unlimited Data/Messages OR $199 with 2GB cap?

Through a link from my company's website, I was able to place an order for the Atrix with unlimited Data/Messaging for $30 extra on the ATT premiere site. See attached image. However, the price for the phone is $299 as oppose to $199. If I take out the $30 unlimited data/text and replace it with 2gb Datapro, the phone becomes $199. I get an extra $100 off of the phone if I sign up for the 2GB Datapro.
I texts alot, so I opted for the $30 unlimited data/messaging plan. My question is, will this stick? When they ship me the phone, will I have issue activating it???

Here's how I did it:
1. Go to the premiere website
2. Add a plan first.
3. click on "Add a phone" and choose Atrix
4. When asked for data service add-on, click "skip"
5. When asked for Accessories click "skip"
6. Now it's asking you to add features. Click on the Data/Messaging for $30 and click "add to cart"
If you do this, it'll show the phone priced at $299. If you add a datapro instead, it'll show $199. I couldn't do this on the ATT's regular site, but I was able to do it on the Premiere website. Plus I get 20% discount from my job, so it's $62/month + tax and $343 up front. The extra $100 you pay for the phone is worth it for unlimited data + Messaging.
If you get the datapro, it's $20/month (20% discount) + $10 for 1000 Texts messages.

I went in through the premier website and I got the same thing! You can skip the data plan section and when you get to the text plan section you can actually pick one that says unlimited text and data for $30.
Could AT&T be bringing back unlimited data??? Maybe it's a feature just offered to premier members or it's a glitch. AT&T should offer a plan that has unlimited text, data and mobile to any mobile for $35!

Did you place an order? I was able to place another order for a friend yesterday.
The 2GB datapro cost $20 after 20% discount and $10 for 1000 texts. So basically you're paying an extra $150 (comparing phone price to radio shack) for unlimited data/text for 2 years. I normally use 1400-1500 each month, so $150 extra is worth it.
I guess we'll find out tomorrow if the activation will go through smoothly. I hope it's a glitch, and they'll honor it.

I didn't place an order I just checked to see if I got the same choices you got and it worked.

I see it as well. The problem is I have an ATT account already, so I dont know if ordering a new plan is the way to go.
Just tried this out and checked with ATT. If you want to keep your unlimited data plan the phone is $299. If you want it for $199 you need to change your data plan away from unlimited.

I think the important thing is also that you can get the unlimited plan this way without having it before. I don't have it now and it lets me add it.

hate to burst your guys bubbles, but that $30 for unlimited text and data is for basic and quick messaging phones, not smart phones. Its not going to stick, you will have to get the $25 for data pro.
ps i work for att. The only way i know of to get unlimited data if you dont have it already is to activate a 2g iphone on your account and then switch to a newer smart phone and then you will be able to keep the unlimited data.

I wouldnt do that because if its a glitch itll get fixed soon. Ill check it for myself tomorrow. I have 22% off with the company I work at and we also have a ATT corporate website. So Ill update tomorrow.

Depends on the company you work for. I work for Xerox, so I get 20%. Xerox has a benefits website, so using the active link through the company I was able to sign up another account. So basically I sign into Xerox, and I go through their link. From what I heard, I can't do it more than once, but this time was able to do it twice using my personal email too. My friend got his order confirmation. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

At&t said the same thing. Your phones data will not work when you get it. Either that or you'll receive a message in the next couple of mins saying that your plan has change.

ps i work for att. The only way i know of to get unlimited data if you dont have it already is to activate a 2g iphone on your account and then switch to a newer smart phone and then you will be able to keep the unlimited data.

I am pretty interested in getting an atrix but no unlimited Internet especially for a larger price than my current plan is a dealbreaker.

If you are a new customer you wont have Unlimited Data. Case closed.

Verizon "Pay as you Go" data Plan for XOOM

Please I need some clarification on how the "Pay as you go" data plan works with Verizon for the XOOM. My only experience is with the iPad and AT&T, where it was very simply and user friendly, I just had to purchase the data from the iPad itself and pay with my Credit Card, no calls to customer service, and I can cancel it anytime from the iPad itself. Based on a quick conversation with a Verizon rep, with Verizon it's much more complicated, I have to actually setup an account with Verizon, use the XOOM with the monthly contract data plan, and when I want to cancel it I have to call customer service and close the account, the same thing to activate the plan again, is that true that it's so complicated ?, I think the way how Apple implemented it with AT&T is very effective and simple, I don't know if with the iPad 2 Verizon will have a different option. Please could you add your comments based on your experience ?, thanks
its true and will apparently incur an activation fee each time service is restarted. Verizon really wants you to get a data plan and keep it :-(
Today I was ready to buy the Verizon XOOM, and use the data as "pay as you go", but after I understood the way how Verizon manages "pay as you go data", I will never invest on something that it will be so complicated and expensive to use. I'll have to wait for the Wifi only XOOM.
Supposedly you don't have to pay an activation fee of $35 bucks but rather you can suspend your account for $15. Still a major deal breaker but maybe when the iPad 2 is released they will change their policy.
Ya it really sucks. I purchased my Xoom and returned it after a week. Day after i returned it i got a Bill from VZN for almost 60 bucks for my "activation fee" + "1 month Data". I actually had to call up VZN and speak to a representative to "see what they could do". Fortunately i got an absolute sweetheart of a rep and was sure to be equally as sweet back. though i didnt get %100 credit. She was able to reduce my bill to $2.39 for the cost of my prorated data for 2 days. While most people would probably argue about that i said that was fine and will pay that bill when i get it.
Im not sure if they do the same thing with the Ipad 3G for ATT(even though i own one) but with the Xoom your data plan actually has a Phone number in addition to the ACCT number associated with it. So thats where all these stupid fees are coming from, they treat it like your actually opening up a new cellphone contract. IPad was 1(setup),2(pay),3(Surf)

has anyone seen this? it is not the first time I've heard that Verizon wants to go head to head with AT&T (is no activation fee each time). Read in the comments.

The verizon rep i spoke to when I setup my month to month accounts that its simply$20 a month plus a little tax and the stupid 35 dollar activation fee. . . as long as you have them bill you for it - but without a contract.
If you want to pre-pay they charge you a $30 fee every month . . . thats right, if I want to be a thrifty consumer and pay as I go so I don't overspend, they charge a fee thats MORE than the cost of service.
Just to clarify, if you want to prepay as opposed to having them bill you (both options without a contract), they charge $50/month for 1GB.

Also note: the "suspension" option can be done online, I believe, without the $15 fee, but it can only be done twice a year for 90 days max each time. So, that's not an option unless you can plan your year pretty carefully.
I'm going to swap my 3G version out for the wifi-only version as soon as it's available. I was told when I purchased mine that data could be turned on and off as needed without any fees, and so I won't have any qualms about exercising the 90-day return policy at Costco.
It seems Verizon will enable "true pay as you go" capabilities for the iPad 2

Why not the XOOM ?
I've called customer service several times today. I bought my xoom on contract because I wanted to have 3g data but was specifically told I couldn't activate it whenever I wanted and I was just better off keeping the minimum $20/1gb plan. So I said if I'm going to have to pay that anyway, I might as well get it subsidized. In other words I was specifically told that vzw would not have that option. Of course, my two weeks are up today and they may change it!!
I would be very mad. I would have definitely bought my xoom without contract. I have called several times and I keep getting different answers. I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and find out. If anyone finds anything definitive, I'd love to see it. Thanks.

I activated my Xoom at the Verizon store on a month to month plan and it was $20/month/1GB and they did not charge me an activation fee.
I bought mine at costco.. the paperwork said 20 a month, activation fee with refund, unsubsidized.
I called VZW the next day and they had put me on a 2 yr contract that if I hadn't have called when I did would've been like 175 bucks ETF to get out of.
SO.. buyer beware, be sure to call vzw to ensure you are getting what you really wanted!
Be careful if your under contract my understanding was that if you suspend the data it also extends your contract until data is turned back on. This is why I just bit the bullet and bough the device. I know its not in everyones budget to do so, but it will save you money down the road.

This is what makes me mad. Given the choices at the time, I got the device subsidized since I was going to have to get a data plan anyway (if I wanted data some months and didn't want to pay an activation fee). Now, two weeks after my purchase, they change the rules!

ok. i went to the store. the first three sales people had no idea what i was talking about. I finally spoke to my manager. They are running a promotion of no activation fee starting today for any tablet (obviously if you buy at full price). I still do not have clarity on whether there's an activation fee each and every time you turn on your device's mobile data. I have read that ipad2 will not have to pay (ie using mobile data whenever you want and pay only the mobile broadband plan) and Xoom will have to pay (ie pay activation fee each and every time you activate).
my takeaways:
1. VZW sales people either just plain dumb or not trained well
2. Apple is pushing VZW around and VZW is pushing Moto around
3. Flash or no flash, this is definitely going to lead to fewer Xoom sales
The ONLY reason holding me back to buy a XOOM today, it's Verizon NOT having a TRUE "Pay as you go" data plan, like the iPad with AT&T and now the iPad 2 with AT&T and Verizon. I think will buy an iPad 2 today.

I tried to take advantage of it and for the offer to be valid you need a 2 year contract which can only be done when purchasing device from AT&T which they will never sell this device.

I walked into an AT&T store and they offered this plan. They said it had nothing to do with the device, it would work on any 2 year contract.
They offered me their Mobile Share plan, with steep discounts, e.g. corporate, new account, etc. There is about 10% extra taxes and fees on any Mobile Share plan, but prepaid is flat rate (prepaid $30 plan is exactly $30). I still turned it down because AT&T does not offer tethering with their tablet data only plans, in my opinion they dropped the ball with Google by disabling tethering. We should not have to hack our Framework-foo.apk to re-enable tethering on an AT&T data plan. I told them I was using T-Mobile and tethering instead.
The advantage of Mobile Share is higher priority on towers in congested areas. The disadvantage is higher cost over prepaid for similar data amount. Plus I have not read about anybody that activated a DataConnect prepaid or Mobile Share using the correct IMEI with resulting LTE service. I choose not to believe it (LTE) service until I see it. Yet you can go in the store and they will hack your IMEI (with false value or false account info) to enable LTE service. In my opinion this unprofessional behavior is not *optimal* (LOL).
AT&T has lots of issues with the new Nexus 7 4G/LTE but I think the $100 discount is not an issue - if you are willing to walk into an AT&T store. Good luck.

On Google Play it states: "Special Offer from AT&T: Through December 31, 2013 receive a $100 AT&T bill credit by signing a 2 year service agreement on qualified postpaid standalone or Mobile Share plans. Activate on device, visit an AT&T store or call 1-800-908-9859 to take advantage of this offer.*
I'm not sure what is "postpaid standalone" plan, unless they mean Individual Plan, e.g. this link. But, comparing Individual to Shared you get 1GB less on same data limit as Mobile Share.
Bad deal for you already on Mobile Share. So $100 credit on Individual Plan loses you 1GB ($10) per month for 24 months. The $100 credit costs $10 * 24 = $240 dollars. This type of *credit offer* is only possible with AT&T. Plus no tethering enforced by Google, unlike the competition.
But, I think the AT&T store manager has some flexibility. One offered me ~20% discount on service, which is still a bad deal unless its a ~20% discount on your entire bill. Really sounds like a bad deal, especially without tethering, so I walked out of AT&T.

I realize if you are simply adding the tablet to an existing MobileShare plan with data there is a $10/month AT&T fee. So, for a 2 year contract ($240 commitment) you will get a $100 credit. Better than nothing, since AT&T charges an extra fee to use additional devices on the same data plan. Most people will agree using a tablet with its own SIM is better than tethering a wi-fi tablet, or similar configuration. My friends had problems with AT&T cable billing, so I hope the AT&T wireless people follow through with your $200 credit.
The $100 credit is a good deal "if you have the extra data" available on an existing MobileShare plan. If you need to purchase additional data it really takes some thought. The options are expanding an existing data plan or buying it directly. If you are buying it directly on an Individual Plan you might be losing 1GB ($10) per month for a 2 year contract, as compared to MobileShare rates.
I did not have existing MobileShare so the Individual Plan was a bad deal for me.

FWIW, I went to an AT&T store to get my SIM and add the Nexus to an existing MobileShare plan. At the same time, we replaced my wife's Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 with another Nexus and got the SIM for that (same MobileShare plan). The Samsung tablet was not on any contract.
The store waived activation on my device, signed my device up on the MobileShare plan for $10 per month (4 phones and 1 tablet share 20 gig per month on the plan - well, now 2 tablets) and gave us the SIM for my wife's Nexus. When we walked out, agreeing to 2 year contracts on both tablets and taking home $200 in credits. Yeah, it takes 60 days for the credit to appear, but in December I should have a tiny bill.
For me, this was a good deal. Maybe not for all, but since I hate tethering, it solves all my problems.
