[Q] backup/restore voicemail - Epic 4G General

I've seen a couple posts about importing and exporting voice mail on several other handsets, but I the suggestions I found in the other threads (example here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6444182&postcount=13) don't seem helpful on the Epic 4G. I don't see anything in /data/ or anything with AMR in the filename.
Does anybody know how one would go about exporting the voicemail files on the Epic 4G? I am replacing one Epic with another so am just trying to export on one handset to another. Nobody at Sprint obviously knows anything, but I figured that it is merely a matter of knowing where to look.

Two identical SMS's sent to "lastname, firstname" contacts

I know this has come up in at least one of the very long image threads;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3783059&postcount=3109
but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a solution available for this?
After 1.5, it seems that when you type a new SMS, and look up a contact, if the contact is filed with a comma (for instance, "lastname, firstname"), two identical messages will be sent.
Other than exporting all my contacts (close to 900) as a csv file and reformat the naming to "firstname lastname" or something, does anyone know of any other solutions?
Does anyone know what exactly causes this behavior which I am pretty sure came with the 1.5 upgrade (personally I'm using JF1.5, but another user confirms this also happens on the official 1.5) ?
Regards,
Christopher
PS. I'm sorry if my questions already have been answered, but with threads more than 300 pages long it's not too easy neither to search for or navigate and find the relevant messages...

Why are SMS messages being logged?

Does anybody know what SmsListener_log.txt in My Device/Temp is? It keeps a log of all text messages even after they are cleared from the deleted items. Can it be disabled?
Heh, I also just found this file and wondered what it was from and why it's there.
Any ideas?
Not on mine. 1.66 stock.
Not on mine either, Stock 1.66.
Hmm, that is weird, I have it too.
Running the Stock USA Tmobile ROM. Definitely seems like it's Sense related since it's written is some type of code/interface.
It doesn't really bother me, though i could see why someone would be upset by it.
I wonder what would happen if someone were to delete the file.....
I have it too, 12.5MBs.
I am running a stock T-Mobile USA rom. I have deleted the file, but it reappears when there are new text messages.
No big deal, but if I delete a message, it would be nice if it were really deleted.
Hehe, I'm wondering what T-Mobile was thinking when they implemented this in their ROM... "Lets just store every SMS in a separate file" ..?
Sounds to me like a conspiration...
cant someone try to write a "lets bomb usa" text, make up some plans and send it to your own phone, then wait a few minutes and see if the feds shows up? lol
I found a way to disable this log:
1. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\SMS\Rules.
2. Delete the following value: {54F38CD4-B778-28BA-6F63-2D942AFCCD7D}.
3. Soft-reset.
Notes:
This GUID represents a CLSID for the messaging rules client in \Windows\SmsListener.dll. I do not know what exactly it does, nor do I know what other messaging rules clients referenced in "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\SMS\Rules" do.
Messaging rules client can move, modify or even delete the incoming message without owner's knowledge. It could be that TMO included this SmsListener.dll to be able to control our phones through SMS. Or may be I'm just paranoid. It would be really nice if someone could reverse engineer this dll to see what it really can do in certain circumstances.
Thanks, deleted entry, will see how it goes.
Not on mine, O2 1.43 Rom

maybe they will knock on our doors here in norway for finding out about their conspiracy and stuff...
bare å løpe over til sverige eller noe nå!! hehe...
I have deleted the registry entry as mentioned above. So far so good-no log of text messages taking up room.
Is there some sort of temp file cleaner for the HD2, similar to CCleaner for a desktop?
Thanks for the help.
Nobody felt the need to ask your service provider why the hell they're logging SMS to a seperate file?
good registry find

Do you think they will really be willing to tell you that even if you're able to reach someone who knows?
Interesting. I don't have this log either.
i have it along with a screenshot (have no idea why the phone takes random screenshots)...

voice search crippled, 4g slow, slow keyboard input & FB sync probs. please verify

voice search crippled, 4g slow, slow keyboard input & FB sync probs. please verify
Title says it all. I have tried everything in my power and knowledge to fix these issues. details below.
1) My voice search used to call people in my contacts. now it won't do ANYTHING BUT search the spoken keywords in the browser. ive read that you must have your contacts in your google group and not in your phone group for this to work. It has worked for me before. This hardreset I put all my contacts in the phone group bc when fb will actually sync, i don't want to have 4030343 contacts syncing to my gmail account since this epic does not give you an option which contact groups to sync or export to a vcard (annoying). I am about to do my 5th hard reset to attempt to cure this newly arisen problem
2) I have had full 4g bars in the Austin, TX area and the fastest LOCAL speed test results would only achieve ~900kbits. Isn't this so called 4g (or pre 4g) supposed to be roughly 3000-4000kbits/sec? 3g is typically over 1000 around here...probably calling Sprint tomorrow about it or going by the store (and wait half my day away).
3) keyboard- love it but seems like when I type too fast my screen can not input the characters fast enough. Anyone else experience this?
4) as many ppl complained - my fb contacts won't sync. It happened once but I had to do a HR and 4 HRs and one pending later, no luck. Read it was FB servers on other phone forums.
Anyone have these issues? Any solutions? Please help. I am spending way too much time troubleshooting...and here comes my 5th HR. can't wait for ROMs so I can root and rid this evil touchwiz or whatever its called crap
i dont have 4G in my area nor do i have facebook SYNCING problems (facebook notifications is a whole different story) BUT i do have the keyboard not catching most of my letters typed.
I tested 4G in the Nashville area and consistently saw 3-5 Mbit/s. Looks like you might be in an emerging area there. Confirm response problems on keyboard. Once had contacts sync problem, they resolved themselves automatically.
While I haven't tried this personally, I hear Vlingo is an excellent alternative for those of us not on 2.2 yet (all of us running stock for now).
Thanks for the replies and confirmation guys. Hopefully flashing a new ROM whenever that is, will cure our keyboard issue. I am sure its software related.
Yeah, I am going to check speeds with the guys at the sprint store across my street.
FB started syncing my contacts today! wooo!!!
Heard about that vlingo deal. Heard good things. Like to install at least as possible though hah
Thanks for the replies, guys. God Bless

Did you ever find the fix for this? My Epic 4G is doing the very same thing ... won't even search for files or apps on the phone using voice search. Will ONLY search spoken terms in the browser. Quite annoying.

Facebook phone number issue.

I searched around and found a few people that had this issue, but not with the Continuum any fixes I found/suggested, I have tried. I just recently rooted and loaded clean DL17 ROM. Everything is working great, phone seems to be little bit more responsive and more snappy. Now before rooting and flashing I never had this issue. So it could be a newer issue or older and I'm just now experiencing it. If I receive a text from anyone that has their number on their Facebook profile the format comes up (+1-###-###-####), if I reply to the message they won't get it. I have tried deleting all conversations in messaging and fixed the number format to (###-###-####)and initiating a conversation. Once I get a reply number format changes back to the +1 format. I scoured google and it seems some people just started having this issue Monday and I also read this is an older Facebook issue. Apparently the +1 is a country code, I have tried creating a phone contact and linking with the Facebook contact, as well as setting certain numbers as default with no luck. No matter what it always defaults back to +1 format. I can call people using that format no problem. I don't think the new ROM has anything to do with it but could be. I more or less think its just a coincidence this just happened to start on the week I decided to root and flash my phone. If anyone has any ideas or info. on this please share. Thanks
PS: The two buddies who numbers I'm experiencing this with have Droids. They don't have an issue. My number shows up on their phone in regular format ###-###-#####.
+1
I had the same problem with regular texts. It is the +1 that is doing it. I had to edit all my numbers in google voice. I resorted to going to Verizon and having them monitor my tests. It is device specific on their end.

How does Sprint sync your real voicemail box with Visual Voicemail?

Happily running CM7 with one issue:
If I dial my own number (or longpress "1" in the dialer) to access my real voicemail box, I have many "new" messages.
But I have been receiving, listening to, and deleting these same messages using the Sprint Visual Voicemail program installed as per the usual method (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12219741&postcount=2 under "visual voicemail" for the one-sentence version).
Why are the two voicemail "boxes" not in sync?
I'm pretty convinced this is a bug-not-a-feature because it gives two different versions of the "truth" to anyone who uses both methods to check VM (because, say, your bluetooth headset doesn't allow you to hear locally-stored VVM audio files.. but that's another topic..). I'm not even sure what happens when this goes on for a month or two- do callers hear some kind of "mailbox full" announcement? Do the oldest messages just go away once they reach a certain age?
I have returned to a sense-based ROM and tried to "update my profile" and PRL, I have sent a VVM to [email protected], and I have gotten the little "toast" that says I have been provisioned successfully. But no sync. I have rebooted. I have waited overnight. I have turned off wi-fi to force 3G communication with Sprint. I have scoured the internet for these and other recommendations. Still no sync. The only thing I haven't done is called Sprint and asked them to get involved (which of course is a bit of a last resort considering we are talking about a rooted phone here).
So I'm asking for help from a) anyone who has experienced this and solved it and/or b) anyone who can shed some light on how Sprint VVM synchronization works.
Thanks in advance...
PS- I already know I can always "solve" my Sprint VVM issues by switching to Google Voice: I'm sure GV is great, but my question is not about GV. I'm just looking for basic information on the signalling method Sprint uses to synchronize your VVM with the cloud. Thanks!
I've been wondering and experiencing the same exact stuff that you mentioned, any input is appreciated here too!

After reading your post I pressed 1 to go into my voicemail and it said I had 12 messages. Never noticed this issue before (I never actually call for my messages, I just use the app), very strange. Unfortunately I don't know the answer.
Thanks ausch- I should have cited your FAQ as another excellent one-sentence summary of the basic method for getting Sprint VVM to run on CM7. And then of course there's this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982966 which spells it out a little more explicitly and, after getting a bunch of blog mentions at some point, had quite a bit of traffic for awhile. I originally reported this issue there but got no response after a few days so I just started up a new thread to get some more visibility.
I think you need another apk installed for that part to work.
This one. I think it is what updates your visual voicemail and deletes messages, not positive though.

I just installed that through ES File Explorer, we'll see if it works.

Lol, yeah when I was typing all that **** up I got lazy and just wrote it up real quick. Probably should have gone a little more in depth.
I installed it too (thank you for the suggestion aimbdd) but it force closes a lot and generally does not seem to fix my issue.
I'm getting plenty of notifications (my VVM "widget" shows the right number of unheard messages and the stock android VM notification up in the status bar shows the right number as well), the version is 5.1.0.34, and everything seems to function pretty well with this one exception.
I see references to Sprint_App_Updater.apk in lots of places (here's an example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7246771&postcount=35 ) but it's not clear to me if the app is actually essential to the VM sync issue I'm talking about.
And one last thing, just a random quote (from http://www.evo4gforum.net/htc-evo-4g-how-to/visual-voicemail-9708/ ) from a person who had the exact *opposite* issue: he prefers using phone-call-based voicemail and wanted his visual voicemails to go away: "I did talk with Sprint and ... I asked them why are the messages that I delete on Sprint VM (#1) still going to VVM and not being deleted. No real answer except for that's the way the VVM app works. He assured me that if I delete a VVM that it will also delete it on Sprint's (#1), but for whatever reason it doesn't work the opposite way. "
This last sentence tells me there is supposed to be at least one-way sync.
I accept that the VVM app holds previously-downloaded audio files and it may not be desired (or even feasible) for Sprint to reach into your phone and delete a static audio file just just because you called into your voicemail and manually erased the original voicemail that spawned it. So maybe we will never have two-way sync.
But that quote above clearly promises that when things are functioning normally the mailboxes *do* sync in the direction I care about: if you delete a message from your phone, a signal goes back to the cloud so that the original is deleted there also.

I just got a voicemail and it was still in Sprint's system after deleting it from the app so I don't think this fixes the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Today's PRL update did not change the behavior.
I might start casting about for answers outside the EVO 4G forum. Seems like it would be a generic Sprint issue that would apply to more than just EVO users..
Well just to close this out, I did find a solution after posting in various other threads until someone came up with the simple suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling.
So the issue that prompted my question is resolved and my voicemail boxes *do* sync.
But I still never did find out *how* they sync.
Seems strange the underlying sync mechanism isn't more widely understood. Guess I'll let it drop for now. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.
