Two things...
Why are the new gingerbread ROMs (OMGB and Evervolv) themed and modified to hell and back? Why can't someone just import things (one by one) to build a stock vanilla gingerbread ROM, and then work from there? I don't want anything altered from the basic vanilla ROM but here we are, dealing with all these customizations and different themes already applied and apps thrown onto there (other than the basics like SU). I don't want any music app on my phone so WHY FORCE ME TO HAVE ONE? I don't want to only have to choose between 2 ROMs to enjoy gingerbread this early. This ultimately leads me having to alter things to GET IT BACK TO A VANILLA ROM.
Also, why must all themes have to be rainbow-eccentric and have no "flowing" colors? Most of the themes are just an eye-sore and make me think the "designer" is colorblind and leaves me to theming everything myself. No, the app doesn't look good if it has a STRONG RED next to a DEEP BLACK, with STRONG BLUE somewhere mixed in.
so, if you dont like whats being offered by the devs, step up and make your own ROM's. if you read through the threads, most users do like what is being offered and that is why they are so popular. personally i cant stand the vanilla android experiance and am currently rocking Nils Biz-sence rom...

This.
Why haven't you "imported things (one by one) to build a stock vanilla gingerbread ROM" if it's so easy? These devs are theming their ROMs to their (and other users') liking, and they are nice enough to post them here. Appreciate that for what it is.
I'd like a vanilla rom that I could customize myself, but I would prefer to have someone else do the work so I'll take what they give me.

I'm not saying it's easy, I can't do what the CM team has done, (because that's what they're doing; taking the CM fixes, applying them, and theming it to their liking) but why are the 2 only ROM dev's right now working on adding **** to a version of android that ISN'T already built for the Incredible? Why can't they make a vanilla ROM, AND THEN customize it to their liking?

So you'd rather have what someone else likes and thinks is "right" instead of what YOU want on YOUR phone? I'm not saying it's a bad thing but why wouldn't you want your own customizations instead of someone elses?

holy **** man, it is vanilla. that's how google released 2.3, with the black status and lime green/orange icons. use whatever launcher you want.

The last build I tried, it said "WeDoDroid" instead of "Verizon Wireless" or even "T-CDMA". Also, the change you just mentioned, different kernals used, different music app, probably other things I can't remember.

ROM developing
step 1 - get a computer
step 2 - learn to spell "definitely"
step 3 - learn to program in java
step 4 - learn to use linux
step 5 - learn extensible markups and the android os
step 6 - cook a rom
step 7 - post it on xda and ask for donations for step 8
step 8 - buy a 1337 t-shirt and a case of red bull
almost there

I am! I just wish that instead of giving us only 2 choices for gingerbread ROM, they'd start off with a basic vanilla one and then work from that, instead of customizing what they want before the ROM is even fully functioning.

I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes anyway. Everyone is jumping on to the MIUI bandwagon, and yes in my opinion it does have a few cool features, but not enough to win me over. Am I the only one on XDA that kind of dislikes this rom? I've tried to like it but I just can't. I like roms that tend to be more stock anyway, I think modded froyo such as enom's rom and cyanogenmod etc. have all of the features and beauty that I need. I see a lot of people saying think iOS and Android together! If I wanted iOS I would own an iPhone and not a N1.
I understand it is all preference and whatnot, but I can't be the only one who hates the MIUI interface. FM Radio cool! Interface not cool! I know I can install other launchers but to me that kind of defeats the whole purpose of running this rom.
I'm not going to mess with it anymore, I just wanted to give it a chance.
Am I the only one who doesn't care for this rom?

Probably.. I just don't see what the big deal is about this rom. I posted in the general forum so I am allowed to express an opinion/vent a little about a rom thats getting a lot of attention and I personally don't see what all the hype is about.
By the way you did read and reply to my thread.
Yea you're correct in stating that installing other launchers defeats the purpose. I liked it for about a week but went back cyan...now i'm on micromods hybrid...for me the sense roms got me hyped up. If the Mui wasnt iphone'd up then it would actually be really sweet but that whole iphone thing just ruins the experience and awww of having an android device
I agree with you OP. I dont like it at all. Now the fact they made a new UI is cool, but like OP said, if I wanted iOS, I would have bought an iPhone
haha fair enough.
I am not too big on the iphone icons either. However, I do like the lock screen, speed, and the battery life.
Also it isnt as obvious as in cyan, but it does have .flac support and will stop playing music when you disconnect. However it will not play upon reconnecting.

The lock screen is slick. It does seem speedy, I can't confirm battery life only because I wasn't able to use it long enough to really wear on a battery. I do appreciate that there are so many choices with custom roms and the dev team that created this rom has obviously worked hard and it shows. That is the beauty of android, so many choices. It is a very pretty rom no doubt, but I just prefer a more stock type interface.
The MIUI ROM looks nice, but I also prefer a stock, simple look. Im happy to see them pushing the envelope though.
the big hype is because MIUI is a complete overhaul, different than what we are used to. Sometimes a change once in awhile is good, and MIUI is a great change I jump from cyan to MIUI. FM radio, lockscreen, and the UI is amazing, I do prefer different style icons but that's about it
It's a very, very optimized ROM. Battery life, speed, the super-neat toggles in the notification tray. You can just install another launcher and still benefit from all of the above plus the great lock screen, FM radio, and excellent phone/SMS/contact apps.
I Agree, with launcher it's really a nice rom !!
I like the resent part who include a task killer.

Just want to say I tried the port for my Inc, but went back to cm6.
Though I don't feel as if its my flavor of ROM, I do want to say it is very innovative, and probably the first (at least on ROMs for the Inc) of its kind to really truly redesign the interface.
So while I don't use it, I would definitely like to see more transformations of this kind.

Well i guess you have a wrong concept of the MIUI rom. It is not because of the launcher ppl like the rom. But because of the tweaks. till now there are no roms to my knowledge where you could change the lockscreen within the android os. ( i am not talking of 3rd party apps like widget locker....., here it's different. it's the native one being modified. ) we havent been able to change native phone and contact.apk, we were just applying themes. but the MIUI is different. Even when you go to settings in the menu, you'll observe how things get snappier and all bouncy. Not to mention the little menu's in the lockscreen ( now being seen in the sense HD), answer&reject mods when receiving calls... and the FM radio which were unknown and still being documented in the xda community. Basically everything has been modifies here, even the mms.apk.
so i guess it is wrong to make such an assumption based only on the launcher which ressembles the iphone. I have been using the MIUI with launcher pro and I had amazing battery life.
If you do not like a rom , just don't use it. Why dont u make another thread saying that rodriguezstyle is too greenish or micromod's roms are too glassy ( sorry chefs , lol . it was just to make my point). or maybe somebody else should start another thread saying i hate stock looking roms! Of course you can come up with all these talks that xda is a community forum, everybody has the right to bla bla bla , democracy.... and you do have the right but it is all about MANNERS and RESPECT here! You do not critise someone's work ( which you are getting for free btw) just because of ur taste!!

Wow I think some people have a serious misunderstanding about what "bare bones" means.
i think there's a version of the base that is used for mikfroyo. basically all sprint stock except the files have been trimmed to not include other language options or something
OP- you need to clarify if you mean "closest to a stock evo rom" or "closest to aosp android" or something else. You can find an RUU (rom update utility) by searching in the dev section if you want a stock evo. You should also be able to find a flashable zip instead of the ruu. If you want base android, check out some of the aosp roms, but keep in mind it won't have any sprint crap, including 4g (except cm7 nightly roms). If you want a stock evo (with sense) but without uninstallable bloatware (sprint tv, nascar, friendstream, etc) check out maybe sprint lovers, which should let you uninstall that stuff.
I would check out Aamikam's base rom. He trimmed out a lot of stuff but it still has all the apps. If you want a near sense less, minimal rom, look for neoevo (or evoneo) which is based on Aamikam's rom but without all the bloatware and not so much evening.
^^^
theming
i kind of take it "bear bones" means all the phone needs to run... nothing more. (The op didn't really explain to well what they wanted )
If that is a correct assumption, there really is no rom out there like that.
Lol wow.... you really donated to me? xD i got the email when i wasn't on here and was a little confused
I don't know if he made a rom but I know JoeyKrim is into that very stripped down thing.
Isn't there a wiki with details of the different roms and what was the goals from the dev who kanged them together?
Give Frost Rom a shot, easily the fastest rim because of how stripped it is, but you lose some of the sense functionality.
Kings unleashed Rom. Fast and bare. Plus after you flash Dalvik2cache mod you have 312 mbs free. That's very bare

Why is it not mandatory for people to post screen shots of their ROM, when submitting a new thread for people to try it?
I personally don't wanna waste time and hassle flashing a ROM to find out it's ugly and not well made.
You can spend hours, days, weeks building a ROM.. but can't take 3 seconds or less to take a screen shot?
Why should it be made mandatory? We all know what Sense ROMs look like. We all know what AOSP ROMs look like, we all know what Miui ROMs look like. If you cannot put two and two together to get four maybe you shouldn't be flashing ROMs. Screen Shots do very little to illustrate how well a ROM preforms. It just shows what it looks like. You don't look in the paper for a car and think "i want that car" without test driving it first. And you do not rely on other people test driving the car for you then reporting back to you.
I personally have no problems with them not offering screen shots for their ROMs. I'd rather download it and install it and test it for myself. After all it's easy for us to say what we like on your phone.
Because if the ROM is not themed (which will be stated) they all basically look the same. We all know what AOSP looks like, and we all know what Sense looks like. Why would you judge the ROM off of someone else's wallpaper?

I understand where you are coming from. but though out time i'm sure any Android user has seen all of the different UI's. They might not know what they are named, but they know what they are, and have seen them. That's kinda the point i'm getting at. I'm not trying to sound like a jackwagon but someone doesn't need to hold their respective hands 24 / 7.
Self accountability and self responsibility i guess is a thing of the past.

mmcblk said:
But you miss the point again. Most of those new roms now are all CM7 spin off and they honestly offer nothing new other than the Theme. This is not debate about UI as we know what it looks like but this is to shed light on the folks who puts a theme and declare it a rom. SS is needed because they have diff theme if it was plain vanilla they wouldn't exist now would it? Now I am not bashing any dev's but come on do we really want to go in that path.

I guess we are side stepping each others argument. We'd make good politicians . SS would provide a good insight to how the ROM is theme'd, and how it looks... And i'll give you that. But it will not do any justification on how well the ROM runs. How smooth it is or anything. My point still stands. Screens shots will not tell you how well a ROM is built it only tells you how it looks.
I agree with the OP, ss should be mandatory if you've done any form of custom graphical changes. While it wont depict the performance, it sure will give an idea on the appearance. Whether its food, cars, women & even roms, appearance is a deal breaker for me

This thread reminds me of trying to get my wife to pick out an adw theme...she was so fixated on what the wallpaper looked like in the sceen shots that it made her dislike some of the themes. There aren't many super themed out ROMs in our dev section, and the ones that are do have screen shots. Like I said, for the most part you are just going to get a picture of the wallpaper someone is using.
You have an HTC Evo Shift? You rooted it and put a custom OS on it?
Awesome.
First timer right her who wants to ask your preference, the only thing I have to have is the ability to tunnel my internet to project a free hotspot. That is available in CM7, so far I am leaning towards a nightly build... But essentially since I have not done this before, I don't know the best, I'm sure no one knows the "best"...BUT I would very much like to know your favorite considering that is my main concern

I really like Sense Roms, especially sense 3.0. I was rocking a stock, rooted rom, but got tired of HTC dragging their feet releasing the source code for the Shift. I flashed CM 7.1 stable, with Scary Ghoul 3 kernel, running at 1.5 gHz. But, if HTC already had source code for the gingerbread release, I'd still be on a sense rom.
Created a whole thread about this. Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262313
If you like Sense then it's gotta be Supreme Sense. Real nice ROM with lots of bells and whistles and a very nice camera app.
Me personally, I prefer CM7. I want raw performance and the maximum amount of customizability and CM7 offers all that more than any other ROM.
@Vico
The thread you specified was...
[INFO] Cyanogenmod 7 optimal settings for Evo Shift 4G on SPRINT (Updated 10-7-11)
Which is not what I'm looking for, I happened to say I was looking into CM7, but would be open to another OperatingSystem all together. CM7 does good work, but honestly they are the only ones I know about. So I would be narrowminded to assume the only one I know about would be the best choice. Since alot of people on this forum have done alot to their phones their input on a recommended OS will be followed.
Well I'm sure you know it depends on your usage, and preferences. I'm a Sense kind of guy. If your looking for a sort of stock Rom with a lot of extras that's quick, than MikShifted G v1.75 is a great choice. Stable, Reliable, and Fast. If your looking for something a little more over the top that's still stable, reliable, and fast. Than Supreme Sense is it, eye candy plus.

It's either CM7 or Sense.
Pick one. If you pick CM7 take a look at my thread.

Don't discount MIUI.. there are a lot of people into it for one reason or another. Myself being one of them. Someone new to flashing roms might find it's exactly what they're looking for.

I think miui is pretty cook because you can literally change everything! A ton of themes and icon packs. Just so many ways to customize. But I live supreme. I just can't leave it!
I flashed miui just to flah it and I haven't flashed another rom since... love the ui straight and to the point, lots of themes is def a plus... I have no 4g so don't miss it at all...

Thanks vee1287. You should join us in the chatroom.
I guess I'll go looking for it after attempting and hboot downgrade again. I dont want to talk about it here though, It would technically be off topic. bah.
I'd like to begin this rant with a disclaimer.
I am not an Android developer, or a Linux enthusiast, or an expert of any kind. All I am is a keen Android user (Since the HTC Desire) who loves customising my phone.
I am EXTREMELY grateful for all the hard work of the people who know more than I do (Developers, Rom chefs, etc) and I mean them no offense.
They are the ones who make buying an Android phone worthwhile, and this community relies on them.
Now, here it is: Why, Why, Why, can't we have a custom rom with the stock Samsung look?
There are some excellent custom roms out there, offering reduced size, performance improvements, improved customisation ability: The likes of RocketRom, MidTeam, Criskelo, and so on.
But every single one of them has a mismatched, ugly, patchwork of a theme, with elements of AOSP ICS, Galaxy S3, and god knows what else.
Many of them slap a black and blue status bar ontop of the Samsung framework, which clashes and looks horrible.
MidTeam used to have a zip file to restore the stock theme, which was great, (Thanks Maxicet!) but this has been dropped from the current version.
Please, I beg you, developers:
Please give us an option to keep the stock Samsung look on our ICS roms.
Or if you are going to do a theme for your rom, at least make it consistent, like the Galaxy SIII look.
Leave the theming to the people that know aesthetics, and keep doing what you do best: Making great Android roms.
Thankyou very much
+1
A stock custom rom would be great! Some ROMs have those elements that I really don't like (for example an ugly statusbar).
But wrong section dude

Ah yes, I just realised this should probably be in the 'General' Section.
Sorry, Mods
1) wrong section mate.
2) there is AlBa ROM which is stock look and feeling.

I think this is the right place for that discussion! I need too custom rom without theme modification! Except ugly looking theme, this modifications come with many problems with some programs, since they change core things in the operation system!
Hi,
I've got rooted lpy ROM with 15 toggle status bar, s3 touchwiz 5*5, Franco r6 overclocked with tegrak and it's brilliant

Definitively Alba ROM is what you need!
Stock samsung UI is ****, but I also hate clock on the center, like on Criskelo ICS ROM. I prefer stock android style UI. This option must be at all ROMs, and official stock too.
place a request for checkrom developer
Agreed, we need good look custome Rom.

there is StockLook Theme for Rocket ROM also....just the bettery icon is customized and of course the 15 toggle (but also in Stocklook)....and:
with really MINOR knowledge everyone can build a complete stocklook with NO theming modifications at all!!!!!!!! If you are not able to do yourself, start a request in theming section - this is 5 minute work to do complete stocklook
if i might just make a quick statement,
the rom by the devs were designed to the way they want it. not to how the public wants it. it was made specifically for themselves for their own usage but were kind enough to share their work for us here on xda.
for us to use.
u can put in some requests on how the theming or looks should be done, and it would be entirely up to them if they want to attend to those requests or not.
i'm no developer and hence i cant complain what i didnt pay for but instead got it for free.
they could've easily exercise the option of "if u dun like it, dun use it".
Cassies xlr rom is stock look
But in all fairness if you dont see summin you like.
Spend 5 hours reading on google and build your own. As eyebee said its not that hard to do and very satisyfying
I may be a spanner but your all nuts

some people open threads instead of at least looking inside the ROM descriptions (or pics inside!!!)....or they could kindly ask inside the ROM threads for wanting complete stocklook....but hey, why? It is more easy to start demanding before reading...

I don't agree with you. This is manufactors, who don't care about customers and their opinion. ROM developers making ROMs first of all for us, not for money. We can donate them if we like their work and can ask to add/change something in the ROM. Too bad we can't do the same for manufactors.

Rom cooks make the ROMs for themselves (at least me and most of the other ones i know)...but they like to share their work and of course you are welcome to ask for additional features inside the threads - and not open an extra one.....
ya bro the keyword here is donate. not sell.
if the rom devs were like manufacturers, they'd sell it to u for a fee. but in this case, the rom devs willingly share their hardwork to you without asking for a single cent. the donation part is totally optional.
there is no legal contract binding here. and i will say it again, rom devs do not make roms for us. they make it for themselves but are very much willing to share it with us.
This thread is totally out of place and mind. Reported.
