Evervolv vs OMGB ((GINGERBREAD vs 2.3)) ROMS - Droid Incredible General

Alright, my first thread EVER.
First off, I'd like to say thank you to all of the developers on this forum.
Everyone does amazing work... and I hope to be able to contribute one day soon.
So I claim no credit for any of the work I discuss in this topic.
As for now, I've been tapping my toes for Gingerbread, as many of you may have been as well. I have, though, in the meantime trying out some of the ROMs released by developers ( Evervolv | GRH55/Android 2.3.1 | v1.0.0a15 | [released by preludedrew] && OMGB v5 (Android 2.3) [released by R2DoesInc )
Since the initial release, I have run on either / or of these ROMs and not had to revert back except about twice. They both run great in my personal opinion, and I'm sure there both still being worked on. But I found myself asking which one I should leave flashed?
I said I liked the feel of OMGB 5 initially, vs the Evervolv v1.0.0a13 - Gingerbread... but since then, Evervolv took it up to v1.0.0a15 and now has a working GPS. I'm sure OMGB isn't going to be behind, though. It seems like you initially don't have access to change the layout of the Everlov, though. Instead of trying to go mess with the settings, I downloaded a simple Gingerbread 2.3 launcher app off of the Android Market, and it works beautifully. Only the absence of a Camcorder and a few little things here and there. But I was never able to run daily on an AOSP for more than one or 2 days before going back to a Sense ROM. In my opinion, one of 2 things are going to happen in the near future...
Let me specify though, this is ALL speculation.
These 2 developers, are going to come so close to perfection with these ROMs. But I believe after the OTA is released, we may see HTC perfect it's Sense. I'm curious to see in the near future... perhaps on January 1st, the source at least is leaked out. And let me say again, MERE SPECULATION.
((But based on previous trends, at least in my head, reference Skyraider Froyo 2.2 )) which was out before official OTA release.
Does anyone have a preference, or still need to stick with another 2.2 ROM for some reason? I see why a camcorder may be important to some, but as for everything else, it does what needs to be done. Virtually no hiccups.
Thank you for your responses ahead of time.
_Steven_

I don't think you'll see 2.3 sense for quite some time... probably not until at least spring (IIRC this is about how long it took from 2.2 release until 2.2 sense roms were available). We'll probably never get an official OTA for incredible, but hopefully Evo or another similar phone will get it and we can port it.
As for an AOSP version, I think we're a few weeks or less away from having it up and running fully. The source has already been fully released and the CM team (among many others) is on it. If you can live without sense, I don't think you'll be waiting too much longer.

Hmm, I agree. But I was just thinking it would be something to advertise 5 days before the end of the year, in order to get rid of inventory. But it was just a wild suspision, clearly I haven't a clue about marketing.
Happy Holidays

I'll sample omgb on and off until the real CM7 is released. Haven't tried enervolv though. As far as kernels go, I try invisiblek's builds, reports problems, then roll back to #18.
I believe I've been tinkering alot since I've been off all week (and still have another week to go). Whatever I end up with on Jan 3rd will have to be full featured, stable and last 12 hours on a full charge.

There's a gingerbread version for the incredible that's supposed to be coming to testing soon, but who knows how LTE smartphone testing will impact that. Maybe in march or later (after inc HD is released and out for a month)?

I also believe that we are going to have to wait until the Inc HD comes and sits for a while before we see anything related to Gingerbread on our Inc's. We might get lucky and have it released the same day the Inc HD comes out but Moto is more known to do that. One thing I do believe is that the Inc is not one of the phones that will get left out of the update to 2.3. We might be a little behind the Evo but we will see it.

It's not up to moto, though. Has to go through three stages of carrier testing. Unless VZW tries to release both on the same day, you're gonna get one and the other. Ultimately VZW has the last say.

[Q] Question

I've been installing Froyo Roms coutesy of FusionRom and Froydvillain makers for a while now on my Hero. It's now time for an upgrade...
I know that Android 3.0 is coming "soon" and will supposedly be released this year - maybe with next couple of months but info is very thin on the ground.
Wondering if anyone knows if Android 3.0 devices will be released this year or is it just the Software that will be released and announced?
I'm holding out upgrading my phone and waiting for Android 3.0 but the most compelling option out at the moment is the Samsung Galaxy S. Anyone think Android 3.0 will be available on the Galaxy S or is it worth waiting until later this year to see what new hotness gets released?
I know there's not much info out there about Android 3.0 but I'm essentially asking if it's worth waiting or not?
Could be waiting for 4 months or more, can you handle that? Having said that Google are well known for just up and releasing stuff without much build up so it could be sooner than expected... personally I don't think it will be til early 2011 for 3.0 phones to be released.

Really? Early 2011? Damn.... I was convinced that 3.0 would be out *with* phones by the end of this year?! I can't really handle 4 months or more because my Hero is so damn slow and unstable. I love and appreciate the custom ROMs for it from the good folks at XDA but I need mo speed!
Thanks for the reply.... Only question now is finding out if the Galaxy S will get the custom ROM love that my Hero got or if I should wait for a HTC of similar (or better) spec.... I think I'm going to go for the Galaxy S because I could be waiting forever otherwise and my phone is basically a pain in the ass. I'll have a look at what's going on in the Galaxy S dev forum....
Bear in mind anything on this subject is speculation. I don't have any insider knowledge, its just my guesstimate.

I appreciate that. Thing is.... What happens with Android releases usually? What's the pattern? Did 2.0 come out as software after an announcement and then a good while later the phones trickeld out? How long between the announcement and the release of SDK/dev tools etc and the the actual availablitlity of phones? I know very little is know about 3.0 - but does anyone know if it's confirmed that the *software* will be revealed/released by the end of this year or something else?
Is there a better place to ask this?
Cheers
I have heard speculation Android 3 will be for the tablets.
So if you want it, hold off on buying anything. Remember, dont buy because of what they promise. HTC promised 2.0 and 2.1 for AGES before releasing it. Custom ROMs were possible as there were leaks, but without leaks, you're essentially stuffed.

I never knew that leaks make custom Roms possible...There are already custom Roms on XDA for the Galaxy S as far as I can tell. Forgive my ignorance but is it the case that Custom ROMs can only be developed from leaked official ROMs (for drivers etc)? Or can custom ROMs be developed simply from android sources? i.e. Because the Galaxy S is one of only a few android handsets from Samsung am I right in thinking that it's therefore much more difficult to, say, port Froyo to the Samsung Galaxy S unless there is an official version out there somewhere from Samgung themselves?
I LOVED messing about with new ROMs on my Hero and am currently rocking ForydVillain which is great - but the cracks in the Hero are starting to show - it's slow. In terms of ROM development - are HTC devices much more likely to get custom ROMs than Samsung phones? I don't know of any upcoming HTC handsets that rival the Samsung Galaxy S......yet!
It's such a pain because there are so many variables with Android, Handsets etc.... :-s

Hold on, you've got confused here, as I wasn't pretty clear about what I was saying. You don't need a leak to make a ROM, but a leak lets you do it before official release. What I'm saying is that there's no guarantee that HTC or samsung or motorola or whoever will release Android 3 in any expedient time. HTC took forever to bring us 2.1, and the only way we managed to get it running BEFORE official release (which was June), was to use custom ROMs based on a leak.
Without that leak, we would likely have been much further back in making ROMs, and might not have managed till the release.
You can dev from a final release just fine, but leaks are needed to do so before the ROM release.
As for building from sources, you can do so, if there's a vendor overlay available. This is how FroydVillain is built.
XDA specialised in HTC devices since 2002/2003, but is now introducing stuff like Samsung devices. I don't know how many "real" devs are on the Samsung, but I think you'll have less custom ROMs, at least initially, until a development community builds up.

Thanks for all the info - appreciate the detail and effort and maybe I need to get out more but I find it all fascinating
By the way - Somehow I've been thinking all day - utterly convinced - that 2011 is a whole year (12 months) from now instead of just a few months from now. I even called Orange to find out when I could cancel my contract. These years are flying by.... Maybe I'm getting old... Consequently - maybe I'll hold out a few more months for 3.0...
FroydVillain is as good as it gets on the Hero at the mo and it can only get better(!)

Dead?

Can't help but feel as if the samsung fascinate dev scene is dead until the release of froyo. Especially since all the core work is already completed with compiled kernels, recovery, base roms and voodoo. The only thing worth changing anymore are themes and I haven't even been doing that. Correct me if im wrong but I came from a droid 1 and even at 2.1 the dev scene was way bigger.
Sent from my better built sammy iphone knockoff
What exactly are you looking for? You can rearrange roms only so many times... I switched roms (d1) quite a fews times and realized there were never any significant improvements...
What this dev community has given us is decent (well maybe some more themes lol) until froyo comes about..
It would be nice to have more roms and such but you get what you get.
I noticed that too. When I had my D1, there were ROMS out the ass! Then I switched to this and have been very let down. If you want a boring theme, you're in luck! Otherwise, not so much.
I think part of the reason more people didn't jump on roms was because Samsung announced it would deliver FroYo within a month after release so creating huge numbers of 2.1 roms wasn't worthwhile at the time.
It's more or less a waiting game for 2.2 now. I think the devs are just waiting for it to drop before doing more serious work on the roms (at least a couple of people I know are).
I imagine it won't be too much farther out, within a month or so...
We saw the international version get froyo, and the Epic got theirs over the weekend, Vibrant was expected on Dec 1 but due to some circumstances it got pushed back a week or so by T-Mobile.
Stop complaining, devs are always busy and frankly do everything for us for free, these things take alot of time and effort. Frankly I'm amazed we have so much, the fascinate isn't the flagship that the D1 was for verizon despite how sexy its hardware is. And to be honest its hard, to imagine my phone getting much better than it is now with dj05 the latest voodoo 5 build and some awesome themer goodness.

Sounds about right our device came out last to, I'm going samsung gives us an early christmas present, come here car dock audio out =D
what exactly is it you guys are looking for?
there are new kernels every day and the roms that are out are fine...theres really only so many ways you can reconfigure a touchwiz based rom anyway until there is an aosp breakthrough
I'm just happy to have what we currently have now.
Rockin' DJ05, Minimal Icognito, with Voodoo5
If Samsung released decent source code, there may be more ROMs than what is available now, but they didn't so everything had to be just stripped down versions of what shipped with the phone. The devs have been trying to get an AOSP rom going, but I don't know the status of that.
I think there would be some AOSP roms out there. Feels like all the roms out there are based of JTs and the others are just themed. Love the kernal development from everyone. I'm actually rocking a stock rom with StupidFast because I prefer the stock feel. I wouldn't mind a nice stock rom with the some memory management improvements, removed bloat and bing removed.

I've been wondering for a while, what would it mean to have an aosp breakthrough? That is, what is holding things up, and once this is resolved will future versions of aosp be easier to build? Feel free to be very technical and precise if that's what it takes to explain, and thanks! I love your theme.

Nexus One Ginbread OTA rumored for this week

According to this website, there have been multiple rumors from independent sources at MWC stating that Gingerbread is supposed to drop OTA by the end of this week or early next.
Any truth to this or do you guys call shenanigans?
http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2011/02...e-to-hit-nexus-ones-within-the-next-few-days/
I'll believe when I see it.
I'm afraid this rumour is even less reliable than @googlenexus' tweet in the early December days...
Same.
10sames.
I really want to believe this one as there are multiple devices set to launch with Gingerbread, and it's been long enough. Yeah, I am running CM7 but I want it fully optimized with the OTA drivers.
Here it goes again...
I will believe it when I see it.

Eventually, one of these "here we go again" threads has to be the real one.
so wait, you said it might come this week, or next week.
so it might come in the coming weeks....and yeah this is what google has been saying all along.
let's see what happens next month.
They said "next few weeks" and that was 3 months ago, so following that logic, "next few days" will be 3 weeks
keep waiting...

Gingerbread ota will drop the day I purchase a babana shaped galaxy s.
Been running gingy on my N1 for some time now...In CM7 form.
BREAKING NEWS #mwc11: "#Nexus One #Gingerbread OTA": "In the next few DAYS".That STILL is:From this very instant up to the rest of eternity.
I understand all of the scepticism, but, with the slew of devices announced at MWC that are set to launch with Gingerbread, doesn't it make sense that the Nexus One should receive the update soon?
With the passion branch alive and well in AOSP, it's highly likely that the Nexus One is still a viable handset for Google.
I did wonder if we'd see an OTA during MWC. It seems to be a good opportunity for Google to promote Android with all these new devices that are lined up to launch with Gingerbread.
Can only hope at this point i guess

Good. I would propose, you just go and buy it right now, so we can have our Gingerbreadz
Well i've played around with some roms here, some mostly work and some are still a work in progress. I'd prefer to get a polished Gingerbread whenever they decide to push it out, not really rushing this one.
I'd wait for 2.4
After using some of the AOSP built roms out there, and seeing how they are a bit wonky, I am perfectly happy waiting for a polished release. If that means 2.4 with all the bugs and fixes, then so be it.
At the end of the day, even though people who own the n1 are desperate to continue to feel like they are up to date, the fact is that 2.2.2 is functional as hell, and there isn't much that is going to be augmented by the release of 2.4. Honestly, it will look different, im sure it will have a few improvements but the functionality will still be the same. It is not the type of jump we saw going from 2.1 to 2.2
The easter bunny will be delivering it to your doorstep....
FFS, rumors or not, I'll believe it when someone ACTUALLY gets an OTA for 2.3.

Vibrant forum dying?

Before I get to my point I want to thank all the devs for there hard work that they do in their spare time. They do it for free and hope that some of us donate to make it a little more worth their while.
Maybe it's just me or does it seem like the development thread is slowing down. I've noticed lately that most of the stuff coming in now is ports from other phones and updates for past builds. Theres not alot of new stuff rolling out. EDT seems to stay busy, but what happend to TW? I would have put money on having a stable 2.3 rom out by now to use as a daily driver. We also lost Eugene and leaked samsung builds seem to not be coming out as often.
Is our phone entering the twilight years? Are the dev's losing interest and working on other phones. I've played around with some of the new phones like the atrix and thunderbolt and i'm sure they could be a lil more interesting to build for.
I hope i'm wrong and 5 min. after I post this a new 2.3 rom comes out. It was fun when you flashed a new trigger rom and 1 day later the new bionix came out. This is a really nice phone and you have to really try hard to brick it. It's almost like Samsung designed it to be modded. Hopefully the devs can get inspired again or some new blood comes in to give us something new.
I think we need to be patient. One day there will be a leak for gb and things will fire up again.

Be patient this phone is amazing and im certain development will continue for it for some time.
In the mean time flash a miui beta or try out the EDT roms you wont be disappointed.
Lets not forget Simply Galaxy v3 a 2.3.3 rom. Yes still developing but stable.
Once we get a proper kernel you'll see more Gingerbread roms as for right now you have a ton of quality 2.2.1 and 2.2 roms to chose from.
Of course the OP is welcome to start developing on their own and contribute.

Yes, but point being is that we're pretty much at the mercy of Samsung & T-Mobile to release a 2.3.
We will not have a kernel source to play with until it releases for I9K, and even then we'll have issues for a while. And we won't have one with rockin' battery life until we get a leak or source.
But yeah, there really isn't much developing coming from anyone except the guys working on kernels & people like Whitehawk, sonique, and of course Untermench who actaully modify the code. Because there's not much else to do.
Things are winding down. There are only a handful of people around who have the knowledge and inclination to roll their own ROMs.
As newer devices with more capabilities are introduced (the dual core LG G2X will be in T-mobile stores April 20th), then the older ones lose favor.
That is how it is with Android. Your 8 month old phone becomes old. After 15 months its an antique!

I actually have tried to develop a theme to post here but there is so much involved with all the editing and i simply don't have the time. I really wish I did. Trust me I have a great respect for what the dev's do once I started playing around with just a theme. I can only imagine what a rom would take. Plus I can honestly say i'm not skilled enough to put out a quality rom any time soon, if ever. I'm really not complaining about effort or quantity from the devs, i've just noticed lately there seems to be a dull in the dev section. I was just wondering why.
Eugene is back. He said on twitter that he bought a Vibrant. You can see evidence, his newest Ginger Clone version has already had 4 updates.
Sure a lot of the development is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 roms, but I'd say we're easily WAY more active than we used to be. We've now got plenty of choices of roms, kernels, and themes. We've also got new people joining the Vibe development scene. There's an experimental Gingerbread Sense that's just started testing. We are now officially supported by the MIUI team. I see new things happening every day. Development doesn't always happen overnight, but I believe we've still got lots of good things look forward to.
Slowing down? I still remember when there was only one rom in the dev section. Now there's a new one each week, and at least one update every day.

Keep in mind the psychology at work here. Most of the people who get all angsty about this are rom comsumers, and not active dev's, themers, or kangers.
It appears that what we are experiencing now is a lot of cross development, taking existing roms from the international i9000 and porting them to our universe thanks to the availability of kernel source for 2.2. So the nature of activity has changed, but the scope has actually expanded.
This phone (thanks to dev work here @ XDA) stopped sucking ass A VERY LONG TIME AGO. Gains to be had at this point are largely cosmetic, so there is the appearance that improvements are not coming at the rate they used to. The fact of the matter is that quantitative improvements are largely unnecessary at this point.
As a "consumer" myself (I gave up on linux development a long time ago, owing to my own inherent laziness) I find the current state of affairs quite amazing. Your mileage may vary. YMMV.
What's funny is that people much prefer a broken ROM that gets fixed rather than a fully working ROM out of the box ^_^

the rest is good.

That's the point for me. I stopped updating at KA6. Sure KA7 came out not long after, but why? I had been updating daily/weekly until then, always fighting some bug or flaw. With KA6, I flashed the ODIN version, removed bloatware myself, added the round battery icon, power off menu, and that was *it*. More recently I've updated the Kernel to Overstock 2.x and voodoo FS, but I'm not even sure why I need voodoo. Can't tell a difference in the real speed of the phone.
I didn't take the phone apart to add FFC like so many did (and who also never use it in most cases), so I don't need improved support for that... and themes, well... I guess there is that, not much going on in KA6 themes -- but that doesn't affect the use of the phone at all.
KA6 for me has been fast, stable, and by far the best on battery life of any I've touched yet. There are few if any programs out there that require 2.3 or higher, and until that is the case, why change?
The atmosphere is totally different than it was last fall, when the rest of the world was going 2.2 and Vibrant was stuck on 2.1. At that time, there were an increasing number of programs that simply would not work on Eclair - plus Froyo had been promised as an update. Now we have everything Samsung promised, and really if you're running a lightly modded ROM, it *is* bug-free.
So... until I am forced to consider 2.3, I'm sticking with KA6.. It is nice after years of constantly flashing upgrades on the HTC Vogue (wm6), then the G1, then flashing the MT3G constantly, then constantly flashing the Vibrant, to actually pick up my phone and have it work the same way it did yesterday.

Android 4.0 ICS for Hero??

Do you think think we will ever see 4.0 or would it be time to move on.
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
Yeah, certainly someone will make a rom or port it But it will probably take a long time before it runs good enough for everyday use and it will probably be a step back in performance from GB :/ But hopefully it will run okay eventually
I agree with Habarug. For now we can't tell for sure if it will or if it will not run on the Hero. Same debate was when Gingerbread sources came out... the Gingerbread was heavy on the hero, it was extremely slow for the first releases, but slowly it became faster and faster and by the latest CM releases it became extremely fast almost like Gingerbread was made for the Hero. At first ICS will be slow as **** but who knows maybe after the ICS sources come out and the devs will "cast their spells", ICS will work on our poor Hero.
Developers often do miracles!! I will pray for the 4.0 on my Hero, since I won't change phone until the new Quad-cores will come out..
Well looks like Feeyo over at the Cronos forums is going to try and get ICS on to the Hero but just like Gingerbread it will be slow for the first few build's.
if not the cpu, I would keep that phone for forever, perfect size, nice screen, resolution, colors.. Glad that it is not dead yet and new roms are coming out if not daily, then weekly. Guess there will be somebody playing on this device, hopefully will succeed

It has been done! The Developers made An exelent job!
There is a ROM but itțs under full development, so you have to wait some time before you can use a stable ICS rom.
I wish all the devs good luck with the new project

Would be awsome..
..seeing ICS on my Hero, and I am willing to try and alpha or beta test existing ics Roms for Hero, heard that there is already an Alpha4 outside which is already able to make phone calls.
Looking forward to ICS.
I think the Hero is getting to slow for ICS, it's a real challenge to bring a good ICS rom to the Hero.
I'm just flashing a new rom to my Hero.
i think every dev working on it, and will be a usable 4 ,earlier than u think
I would be suprised if they make it stable and fast enough for everyday use. But fingers crossed.
is under development, there are already 4 beta!
Although Hero is already running ICS, it doesn't mean it should.
We saw a big improvement in performance and features from 1.5 to 2.1. However, the 2.2 improvements were minor and the 2.3 are already trade-offs... some things are better and some are worse.
ICS was designed for 2+ cores and GPUs, which Hero has none.
Definitly right, but sometimes it is just great to have things which are not meant to be.
Unfortunatley the Hero is getting old, but I 'll give him the chance to savor an IceCreamSandwich at least once ;-)
i dont see why our little hero's couldnt defy logic once more
well, the alpha 4 hasn't been updated for two weeks already. It is not going that smooth as you wish for
The Alpha 5 is out already, and I find this version quite fast. I advice everyone to try it if it's not your main phone. It made me quite happy seeing it work so fast.
Ice Cream Sandwich for Hero]
I've tried Alpha 5 and must say it's really optimistic
I made a "test" of ICS on the Hero on my blog : bheller.com/2011/12/15/jai-teste-ice-cream-sandwich-sur-un-htc-hero/ (in french, sorry mates!)
Quite funny to see the Hero still on the edge
