Alright guys, I've had my G2 since November 2, and now I am realizing that I really don't need a hard keyboard since I'm coming from an iPhone and haven't used a Hard keyboard since I've sold my G1 in January 09.
What I'm going to do is, sell this phone and go out and get a MyTouch.
I love the G2 but the keyboard and bulky feeling gets to me. It's quick and love the keyboard once in a while writing fast texts.
Now I'm stuck in the middle, should I do it?
With the G2, CyanogenMod works and is supported by Cyanogen himself.
And also, the G2 is stock, and feels like there is more devs making roms for it.
What do you guys think I should do? THanks
I switched for the same reason and haven't looked back. You'll enjoy the better camera, better video recording, extra ram, ffc, hard touch buttons, and thinner design.
IMO by reading your post I can tell your curious about the mt4g and I sense as though you may have already made up your mind lol you are correct on all accounts as far as dev support (so far), I say if you are in a position to try it out why not? I don't think you will be disappointed just make sure you get the "good" display.
there's a lot more Dev support for the G2
I was worried about Dev support coming from the Vibrant, which has a pretty good community.
Funny thing is....the MT4G is fast as lightning stock...and really all I'm worried about is rooting to remove some bloatware and some theming.
I might run Cyanogenmod (which looks like it's pretty easily ported) eventually, but this is my first sense (ish) phone and it's not too bad. Plus I like a lot of the things that they packed in (in particular the browser enhancements).
The Vibrant: There were tons of roms and speed hacks and dev work because the phone was garbage without it.
The MT4G: Pretty damn sweet and fast as lightning stock.
Came from the same thing you are im good with the mytouch better faster and ffc go for it you wont regret it
someone at my job has the g2 when she sees my mytouch running evil-hd Rom she regrets buying her phone, keyboard on that thing is useless in comparison to voice to text swipe, gingerbread keyboard (cm only) etc.. Our dev support isn't so bad these days, we even have a miui Rom so I say take the plunge no regrets

Alright, I've made up my mind. I want the MyTouch. But now the problem is getting rid of the G2 and getting a MyTouch. The G2 cost $50 more retail than the MyTouch but already the value is **** on craigslist. I can't get $400 for it. I've tired emailing and calling a couple people to see if they'd like to trade, no one wants too.
Once I get rid of this G2, I am in for the MyTouch. I don't care about the color anymore, lol, white or black, other than the red and purple.
Anyone here know where else I can sell it? eBay? I don't want too cause paypal and eBay take big chunk of the money... Ughhhhhh, If I can't I'm going to stick it with this phone. I like it but the MyTouch is better but whatever.
But the thing is, I really use the keyboard on this thing though. I hate using the swype or any other soft KB for long text messages, the hard KB is just easy to type on.
Last Friday I sold a G2 for 300 on C/L.
Saturday bought a Nexus S on a contract upgrade.
Returned the Nexus S this morning, canceled contract.
(I could not deal with the phone having no way to move the curser)
Tonight bought a MyTouch 4G brand new for 350 on C/L.
Impressions... the MT4G is a faster better phone then the G2
but the bloat ware is horrible.
I'm too used to the stock android on my Nexus One.
I have a G2 and I wind up with a free mytouch 4g due to some contact shifting. I didn't care for it at first, and went back to my G2. Then I gave it another chance, and used it over last weekend. I was bummed about what I perceived to be poor battery life compared to my wife's G2. When I went back to the G2 I realized what bugged me about it: the keyboard is a little too stiff for me, and I went back to the mytouch. It's my fifth Android phone, and the best I've used.
Well buddy I am in the same boat as you are and like you I also wanted G2 but later switched to MT4G, thank god I didn't buy G2 or I would have regretted it by now as MT4G is superior. Now I come from HD2 community and we all know the advancement we achieved in past few months which is unbeatable at this point by any device when it comes to total custom control. Only reason I am even considering MT4G is due to my beloved HD2 being stolen. Other than that I wouldn't even think about upgrading until there was viable dual core mobile processor based device in the market.

Well, after comparing many phones to MT4G in many areas like spec, benchmark, IRL usability (browser, map, cam, ect). This is the overall result I got in my opinion so I am not trying to be biased here as I myself voted for HD2. But the only device that did beat MT4G in my opinion was Desire HD which is what I wanted only if they supported 3G in USA, hell IDK why HTC make stupid decisions. I know ill be super pissed of if they realse DHD in USA with US model just like they did with HD2.

Thanks for the replies. I got myself a white one today, even trade with the G2. Haven't got to play with it much yet but I'm living the form factor of the phone. For done reason the screen feels brighter and bigger, hence only being one inch bigger. Can't wait until I root it and get this baby going wanted the black one cause it looks slick but this will do until someone wanted to trade their black one for a white one, anyone?
Edit, you can probably tell in using swype, just have to let go of that urge to whoop out the physical keyboard when I get frustrated with swype or the soft keyboard.

I'm sorry. 0.1 inch bigger. Alright this isn't like the G2 at all. I rooted and got S-off but the Rom isn't rooted. What do I do to have root stick?

Since I'm on my phone I can't get you the link but go in the android development section and look for how to root noob version that's the way I rooted mine

Thanks. I got it. Now there's a couple things I need to fix or get it to work. Just the lack of roms, coming from the G2 annoys me. There's no good rom out there.
And the battery issue, it won't update or show the correct values of the battery
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Talking about lack of roms and development. As im already semi-migrating from HD2 to MT4G, didn't buy MT4G yet until few of the bull**** is fixed by HTC (washed out display, off center ffc, creaky buttons, ect) makes you think how it even passed QC in first place. I mean if I am welling to pay and will pay the full device price of $450 then I expect it to work. Most importantly I hope this phone can live up to my HD2 standard when it comes specially to customizability, I mean we all know how versatile HD2 is hell folks down there want me to forget about MT4G and buy another HD2 lol. I hope as time goes on MT4G community also grows along with development.
Try using team silences' Iced glacier Rom, its the stock mytouch Rom so its super stable, but it doesnt have all the bloatware. As far as your battery goes download setup(free) from the market, that along with some other phone weeks should help your battery life substantially. Also titanium backup is another app to download (free) that can help you further remove bloatware.

Everyone knows the Mytouch HD is coming out soon, but been really taking a toll on me. Stay with my G2 or sell it and get the MTHD. I love my G2 don't get me wrong. The main reason of thinking about getting the phone is the front face camera. So I would be able to Skype with my girlfriend whenever she moves to florida. What would be your reasons to stay with the G2 or get the MTHD.
I am torn in the same way. G2 or mytouch, I guess it will depend on root. Mytouch has a lot of crap I don't want, sense, kids zone... Would be great to run stock. Don't really care about the FFC, I am sure I would never use it, I hate taking phone calls, why would I need to see the person?

The decision is ultimately up to you.
My opinion is that if you value your GF, and the time you spend with her, more than your phone, go for it. List your pros and cons of each and make your decision.
Good luck there.

I would stay with the G2 simply because it just came out. I would like to make an advice, wait and see what the device does before JUMPING all over this thing. Front facing camera? Cant use that unless you are on 4g or wifi. Today it's useless.
2011 it will start to be a big trend merely because all the 4g networks are going in to place. And if you don't live in a city, well, that front facing camera is definitely useless. Are you a gamer? Who needs a duo core processor in a phone?
I think the g2 has a front face camera. Look at the top left of the screen. Could that be a camera?

Almost every modern phone has that, its the sensors (Proximity, Ambient Light, etc). How can a phone have a "secret" front facing camera...rofl
Espresso aside, the specs are better on the myTouch HD/4G. (Well that's unless you absolutely need a keyboard...) The ROM port for the Nexus has had reports of sheer speed much like the G2. (There's a kicker...) My one and only problem with the new myTouch is the blocks around the apps. I could care less about everything else because I actually happen to enjoy Sense and their new fastboot as well. Included on the new myTouch.
both will have crazy root locks i say get rid of ur g2 asap and grab a nexus still the best phone on the market this root stuff is completely bogus we buy a phone and we cant even customize it i paid 530 for this should have returned it when i could getting a nexus tomorrow yeah mytouch 4g has a front facing camera and processor a little bit better is that enough to move to a phone with not perm rooot heeeeeeeeeeeeeel nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I'm still within my 14 day period on my G2. I've been seriously thinking about sending it back, and waiting for the Mytouch HD. However, I was just looking at pictures of it on Facebook. And all of my memories of the Slide came back. The phone looks less sturdy and more "toyish" than the G2. It's got a very plastic look to it. It's not going to be running "stock" Android... etc... The build quality was not that great on the Slide. I'm going to stick with the G2. It's got it's issues, but overall in my opinion it's the better device.
Im sticking with the G2 (probably)
I work for T-Mobile and am getting a MyTouch HD free as part of my position at my store (MyTouch Champion) the same way I got the MyTouch Slide I was using before ordering the G2. I prefer the Vanilla Android software on the G2 over the Espresso Sense software on the MyTouch.
This is mostly a personal preference, and I don't mind Sense I just prefer Vanilla Android. Overall I would think the day to day performance between the G2 and the Mytouch HD will be equal. The Mytouch HD will likely benchmark a little faster since they basically have the same processor with the G2 clocked at 800Mhz and the Mytouch HD at 1Ghz.
Overall pick the one you like. I think they will both be nice. I'll post back when I get the Mytouch HD and have some hands on time.
I just got my g2 today coming from a vibrant. And something I noticed right off the back is that there's no lag. I would probably just stick to my g2 but idk about the mythouch hd whatever is going to be called looks good reminds me somewhat of the nexus.

Hey guys!!!
I'm just wondering what you all think of the g2. I played with the MT4G, and I like it. However, with gingerbread proally coming out soon (PROBABLY) , that'll slow updates, for the MT right? I like the keyboard on the G2 though.
I use facebook a lot
I text a lot
I like more customization
i'll probably root, overclock, and flash a custom rom when a lot of them become available.
mySense seems allright!
What phone should I get, and how do you like it?
I'm also worried that it's been a few months since it came out, and its not even at the front at my store anymore. I don't want to sign a contract and want another one before 3 months.
thanks!
I'm loving it right now and I haven't even rooted it yet. The keyboard is what sold it over the mytouch though. I'm kinda waiting for gingerbread before I go ahead and root. The hinge might turn you away though. It's not too bad on mine but some others at the store were petty bad.

thanks for your speedy reply!
haha thanks! well, i like it. i just am deciding if i like mysense, and if its worth losing that amazing keyboard. though the screen is only .1 inch smaller, the mytouch screen seems way bigger! i like it in my hand.
you said the hinge wasnt that bad? the one i played with was really sturdy. i see how it could become loose though.
By the way its not "mySense" it's called "expresso" and it's pretty much just a nasty version of HTC Sense.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
oh, thats interesting! your probably right, but why is it called my'Sense on the forums? so its espresso?! okay. thanks!
anyway, how do you like your g2?
If you're going to root anyways, it's up to you what phone you like best. Gingerbread will probably end up merged into CM and CM is being ported to the MT4G.
You know what's good? You can make it look exactly like mt4g with 1.8mhz overclock.

I will NEVER own another piece of MyTouch garbage! Tmobile says the mytouch line is their flagship of phones, what a joke! If you buy the MT4G, you'll get updates a year or two later.
Besides the G2 is by far a better phone. Yes, I have used both including a nexus one and I feel IMO, the G2 is a better quality, built better and looks 100% better than the plastic MyTouch line.

I'm totally in love with my G2.. people told me that since i had never had an android phone that I'd want to get something more user friendly like the mytouch's mysense ui, but i like stock android and i don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. The hinge on mine is pretty sturdy so i have no complaints

mt4g looks like a cheap kids toy/ fake wanabe i-phone with crap sense- everything from the advertising to the appearance of it is repulsive (to me) the specs are awesome though. G4 is a worthy sucessor to the G1, in a class by itself, and i agree with the reviews about it having that "luxury car" feel. do what I did, get a g4, perm root it and put the real z sense rom on it, i'm sooo happy. iv had MANY phones, love the google integation, free gps!! this phone feels anything but cheap. as far as samsung goes, i'll reserve my comments, i just wish they would stick to making tv's

G2's awesome, absolutely love it, and I'd dare say it's one of the best android phones out on the market right now and will be getting official updates long before phones with loloverlays.
That being said, if Sense is your thing, get the G2 anyway and flash any of the Desire Z sense-based roms floating in the dev section. Sense 2 > that espresso garbage on the mytouch line (and it's fast on this phone, which was nice).
I haven't had any experience with the MT 4G. But I can say the G4 is awesome. Could not be happier with it. I don't plan to root because I feel temp root is enough for my uses. But now that we have perm root it opens up so many options.
The only gripe I have with it is a slight discoloration of the soft molded plastic parts. But I don't know if everyone is experiencing this. I bought a case so don't notice any more.
I was one of the ones that had no issues from the very beginning. My hinge is decent and has never caused a problem. No random reboots etc.
Hope this helps.

Mixed Feelings
The G2 is an absolutely fantastic phone when it has strong signal or WiFi. Since the OTA, it has been stable & the memory (despite being less than 1/2 of that advertised) feels limitless.
However, the G2 behaves like a screaming 2 year old when signal is low. I don't know if it is T-mo or the phone or some combination. Apps start crashing, phone long pauses, wild fluctuations of the signal meter. It becomes absolutely unbearable. My problem is that both office and home seem to qualify as "low signal areas" - despite sometimes showing "3 bars".
If you buy it, take it on some very critical trial runs in the first 2 weeks to be absolutely sure that it will be OK in all of your stomping ground. Don't "move in" and get attached. I kept telling myself things would get better - and now I'm stuck with a very frustrating piece of hardware !
Hey members,
Newb here to the forums and wanting to get regular with posting and such. I was on sprint users and have moved over to tmobile on a family plan and signed up during the FREE PROMOTION. I got 3 lines for Wife, MIL, and Me. We went with 2 my touch 4g for the ladies and I picked up the G2.
I was really sad to see that rooting would be very tricky using ADB compared to EVO like my brothers. I found a quick and easy method using terminal and preset images. I loaded up nightly build for cyanogen vision build 37. Overclock to 1.3ghz and using 1500mhz EVO battery modded. I plan to pick up a mugen battery but wanted to use what i had lying around the house for Sh*ts and giggles.
I have 12 more days left to swap out for any other model in store and only thing that looked decent was mytouch4g. With the latest roms and slight overclock i am happy with performance and build quality (wish hinges were slight bit stronger and held in place). Should I bother looking at any other models in the next 12 days. Seems like all the next gen phones will be out in next 2-4 months and the deal i got was really nice. I paid $100 up front for each phones and with that we got free accessories, 15% off monthly bill and free activation. The kicker is we get $200 back in mail in rebate per phone so that should help with modding costs
Any recommendations at all on MIUI rom versus a decent Cyanogen rom that i should try next or any other rom for that matter. I was very glad that with those 4 links i was able to be up and running in matter of couple hours and was able to spend the rest of my time with baby boi versus ADB
thanks

I have both the G2 and the MT4G. Both are amazing phones with excellent hardware (minus them stupid hinges). Right now the mytouch is my weapon of choice, but it took a long time for that to happen. I still use my G2 here and there. Both are rooted with Cyanogen nightlys. My best advice to you would be play with your wifes phone here and there. do some comparisons of what you like to do with the phones. One major factor is ffc vs real keyboard. Personally I would pick the keyboard cause I don't know many people who really are gonna get that much use outta the ffc. I mean its cool but how often is it really goin to get used. The reason I am using the mytouch though is because of it's 768(or something like that) RAM. G2 comes with only 512(I believe). This offers more more functionality for what I like to do with my phones and its future. It is a very tough decision, and good luck with whichever you choose.
On a side note, I am somewhat disappointed in the G2 only because the G1 was so iconic and the G2 just seems like a semi-improved nexus1. Plus the G1 was a class of it's own whereas the G2 has a twin called the desire z. A phone with that type of history/background should be another single Icon. This is just my opinion though. The phone is great for what it is.

I would like to correct your g1 statement the g1 is actually a triplet having the dev 1(android site) and the htc dream(Europe)http://mobilenewz.net/2009/02/google-blocking-paid-market-apps-from-dev-phone-1-users/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Dream
but then again the G2 and Dezire z are like good twin and bad twin (hence Stock and Sense)
I love my g2 except for my first one had a busted hinge and the replacement they sent the phone wouldn't stay shut. It had the loosest hinge.
My case I got the g2 for a business device because I email a lot and wanted a physical kb (and not the limitations of a blackberry) but I now worry about my 3rd replacement being a possible dud too. I guess ill wait and see.

Well hardware wise the G2x is better than the MT4G in every aspect except for the lower RAM, but that's not a problem as the G2x doesn't run Sense ROM's.
Only disadvantages I can think of from the G2x compared to the MT4G is that MIUI isn't as stable on the G2x. Also, if your wife enjoys Sense then that'd be a problem of course as only HTC phones can run Sense.
g2x is my fave still right next to the galaxy s 2
in no way shape or form does the g2x compair to the mt4g. i have had all three of those phones (current mt4g) and i still regret the day i traded my first mt4g. trust me with how bad lg is for support and how many issues the g2x has it is not a good phone at all. no support whatsoever. yes it is fast but it has so many fc's its not worth it. if your wife wants a phone that she can OC and get a high quadrant standard than yes go with the g2x but i can assure you it will never live up to an htc.

Completely opinion. I like the G2x more than the MT4g because it has better hardware, a nicer screen, and I think it feels much better. It does have quite a few issues so OP don't be surprised if you need to exchange it a couple times but eventually it should work fine. I've already done my rant on HTC devices so I don't really want to type it all out, just stick with the g2x and you'll be fine.

That's pretty much been my exact experience. The G2X screen is quite a bit nicer, and it does feel a bit snappier overall, but the MT4G is no slouch, and a better phone overall; it's much, much, much more reliable than the G2X.
I have both phones I prefer my g2x the screen on the mytouch bothers me kind of washy color and running games side by side no comparison. And try a couple roms I have had the same g2x since April

Everyone that is complaining about the mt4g screen please go look up on you tube mt4g screen compairson. I personally have had one of the crappy screens and my current mt4g with the sony superior screen and it is much nicer than the old one. I can see it from every angel and the glare is greatly reduced.
Not trying to cause fights here, just want to make everyone aware of the difference.
Also I would much rather have single core with 750 mbs of ram rather than dual core with 512.

And op you will have problems with the g2x and since this phone is for your wife, I doubt your or her will want to deal with these issues. I can assure you, it will need to be sent back at least once so if you do go with it, expect for your wife to be phoneless for at least a few weeks.

I had to go through 5 MT4G's to finally get the good screen and good eMMC. But then of course after time button started to get creaky and the touch screen started to have that infamous lag that a lot are having.
Traded it for a G2x and am still on the 1st G2x and absolutely no problems.
I loved the MT4G and always will, if you get a perfect one you'll be happy with it.
I know the G2x has had it's problems, but it seems as if the newer batch has been good to most people.
But if you take a perfect MT4G vs a perfect G2x, then I think it's little to no contest. G2x has better hardware from processor, screen, and all the way down to the speaker quality especially paired with a voodoo sound kernel.
And, the extra RAM on the MT4G is only useful if you run Sense. Other than that 512mb's on the G2x is plenty enough for running CM7 and such.
Again, I love and have owned both phones. I just like the G2x a little bit more. But to each his own.
Warranty phone replacement. they sent me two replacements both not acceptable. one the keyboard was messed up and the other the sd card "cage" was messed up.
15 minutes with tmobile and they offer me a sidekick 4g as a replacement for my G2. I laugh and him and tell him that's not going to work. I tell him i am not a 17 year old girl and that that phone is not even in the same league as the HTC G2. Supervisor requested. 30 minutes later and he still offers me a side kick. Supervisor requested again. 45 min i am able to get my G2 again when they have them in stock. Not sure when. Supervisor demanded and now i'm getting really rude. 55 minutes with tmobile and still no supervisor but now i am offered a HTC Sensation. I'll live with that. Though i am sad to have to part ways with my G2. I really had no want to get rid of it. Guess it is what it is.
This happened today from 11am to 12pm. Just an FYI.
I'm pretty sure there was a few available online few weeks back, Try ordering online you might have better success or ebay could be another option.
This was for warranty replacement. Not going to buy a new phone while the current one has warranty.

LOL you got a Sensation as a replacement? Well, that worked out then.. hahaha, i should haggle more too xD.
Wow! That was a pretty good deal you struck! however, I like my DZ better than My wife's Sensation. I think the DZ is more practical.

Basically they gave you a hard time because they were trying to get rid of old hardware and you wouldn't accept it, so you ended up getting a hardware upgrade for free(yes upgrade, aside from the physical keyboard the hardware is better).
I went through the same thing with Bell getting replacements for two Dexts, none for replacements they tried to give me Blackberries :/ I wouldn't accept and fought and ended up with two Desire Z's Shouldn't need to fight about it, its their problem not ours if they cant/won't keep hardware....

the lack of physical keyboard doesn't bother me since i never use it. I got the G2 because it was basically stock android and tmo told me they weren't going to release a nexus s 4g. Trying to stays true AOSP. It looks like it will be harder to stay AOSP with the sensation but with the help of devs in that forum i'll figure it out. They still have nowhere near the development that the G2 has. and i am a flash whore so that might get annoying. Guess its time for me to learn some dev skills.
and yes the sensation IS an upgrade. All i wanted was a shinny new to me G2. but once they offered me a sidekick i knew i would hold out for the sensation.
My G2 kicked the bucket last week and they sent me a refurbished one with a broken MicroSD slot (Not sure if it was the same as the OP's). I called them immediately and without even needing to escalate it they said they're out of G2's and had to replace it with a different phone of my choice. It was either the MyTouch 4G Slide, LG Optimus Q or the Sensation.
Guess they're really running out of G2s and are just handing out upgrades now.
Hmmm. My G2 is doing the stupid cardock crap non stop. Maybe I will replace it with a Sensation. I'm due for an upgrade anyway, so why not get the sensation for free until the HTC One X or SGSIII hits shelves.
Guess I have to unroot and return this phone back to stock.

I just got off of the phone with advanced tech support. They are shipping me a Snesation. I'm sad to see the G2 go. But I'm ready for a change. (I'm still eligible for an upgrade, so hopefully a G3 will come out someday with a sick keyboard)

How long is T-Mo's warranty anyway? I need to start breaking my phones and getting replacements/upgrades, I'm too nice on these things haha

Everyone should shift over to the MyTouch 4G Slide!!!
Development is really starting to pick up on that phone. It has been officially added to the Virtuous Team lineup as well, not to mention the slew of new roms that have popped up in the past 2 months.
Made the switch about a month ago and it's a great phone. Liking it more everyday. The G2 has some serious growing pains coming its way. It will handle ICS, but we are already starting to reach the limit of the hardware. If I wanted to do anything intensive (GTA 3, running MANY apps), you could tell the phone was struggling at times. And this was on gingerbread. With ICS running in the background, I can only assume that it will get worse. That's why I jumped ship.

I think that we are going to see some really good ICS roms soon now that Qualcomm has finally released proper GPU driver binaries for the chipset. Just because you're seeing problems with ICS right now doesn't mean that these problems won't be fixed in the future. You have to remember, all the ICS roms running on the G2 right now are in Alpha or Beta stages, and aren't full, proper releases yet.
Although, I agree, owning a MT4G Slide would be awesome
Here's a fairly in depth review of the 4G Slide that I made coming from the G2...

The 4G Slide is one of the best qwerty androids out. And judging by how often they come out, it will be for quite some time. You won't regret it. It is everything the G2 should have been under the hood

I'll admit the MT4g Slide is a great phone. Who knows, the htc one x ia rumored to be the "G4X" maybe we'll see a G4 soon.
