Gotta brick a Hero - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi, A friend of mine needs to brick his handset without causing any physical damage. Any advice?

Flash a CDMA radio. Why does your friend want to brick it though?

He can get an upgrade to the desire if its bricked. How would he go about doing that?

Flash a Radio and then pull the battery out half way thru the reboot?
why is his carrier offering such a deal? lol

It's not the carrier it's his employer. He works in an electronic store and thats what they offer to their employees. Not to shabby huh lol.

wow thats a pretty sweet deal...

3sec in the microwave... Desire! HA!

Per rule 9, we can't host discussion of how to brick phones or anything similar, which is to exploit warranties or exchange schemes.

**** WARNING ABOUT T-Mobile's Insurance & Dev Phones ****

Just a friendly heads up -- if anything happens to your $400 phone as purchased through brightstar or given to you via Google at a developer's forum, T-Mobile's insurance carrier Asurion will not replace the device with another developer phone. Instead you'll get a stock G1 back. I'm speaking from experience here after exhausting all avenues of redress with Asurion. Don't waste your $5.95/mo, instead purchase it on a credit card and let that coverage handle the replacement.
wow really?!?!?! i thought that if i bought an iPhone and jailbroke it and then returned it to AT&T they would send me another jailbroken iPhone. or if i bought an asus computer and sent it to HP they would send me another new asus. this is really weird that t-mo would replace a phone that they don't carry with a phone that they do. if only some smart person had said on a developers forum:
"don't be an idiot like me and send you phone somewhere other than the place you got it for repair"
mods please close this useless thread
What, exactly, does a jailbroke iPhone have to do with this comment?
-bZj
hahah
OR-
buy a "stock" G1 for $150 and "root" it lol
in his defense he probably got it from t-mo at a developers conference. no need to be testy to the guy.

This post has nothing to do with an iPhone... he is simply stating that if you purchase an ADP1, use it on T-Mobile, get the insurance through T-Mobile, and ask for a replacement through T-Mobile... they give you a G1.
There is a different in hardware between the G1 and the ADP1. There is no hardware difference between a jailbroken iPhone and a non (unless, of course, you are one of the few that jailbroke by resoldering the radio. If so, kudos to you, but you voided the warranty by opening it).

Not really, unless you consider a dark grey shell and a silkscreen design "different hardware".
Although id have to agree that the Asurion insurance is pointless if the OP expected an ADP1 back. Generally third party insurance policies will work with a repair depot and put the return hardware into a scrap pool to be refurbed and handed out to new insurance claims. The repair depot technician probably thought the ADP1 was just a G1 with a fancy custom shell (which aside from the unlocked SPL, is pretty much what it is).

and care to explain what the difference in hardware is? apart from the battery cover, a developers G1 and a stock G1 are identical, hardware wise.

Uh, no. You are getting the exact same phone back from Apple in that instance, just different software. In this instance, you are getting a different model of the phone back.
I don't mean to argue, but there is no need to bash him. He was just trying to warn ADP1 users.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised that tmobile would even offer insurance on a device that they didn't sell... in the least, I wouldn't expect them to honor it. If it was a warranty issue, you should have sent it back to brightstar or directly to HTC, if it was something stupid like water damage, be happy that you got anything back AT ALL.

Seriously I agree.. I am surprised they warranty'd it at all, Although in the tmo system I bet everything just said it was a g1 ehh??
on top of that Asurian is the same warranty provider that at least Verizon & Sprint uses as well & Since nobody carry's a developer phone I am fairly sure they dont them to send.. In my opinion that would be common sense to assume you wouldn't be getting the same back unless they returned your original in nonworking condition..
Dev phone warranty claims need to be filed with brightstar.
email [email protected]
include your imei# and a description of the issue.
They will contact you with troubleshooting steps or RMA info.
Enjoy!

From what I have heard, their warranty is a LOT stricter. The only thing they'll replace is physical hardware problems. If the phone bricks, you're SOL.
warranty issues
auctually im on my 5th g1 now through warranty meathod.
i got my g1 for free. i am good friends with a "blackberry/pda specialist" at tmo. this is from her.
1. we dont handle warranty exchanges. htc does.
2. yes we send you the phone, but we ont recieve your old one.
3. software problems.. ok to exchange
4. hardware problems ... ok to exchange
5. cracked screen or water damage ... 100.00 fee to warranty exchange and problem must be before water damage happened.
6. when your old phone gets to htc we only verify it was sent and recieved by us, we just ship them to htc then.
7. it doesnt matter what phone you send us back as long as its tmo branded.
im not going to give anyinfo but idid this and have never paid for my g1.
well let me clarify...
i bout a full retail g1
ok so now i have a g1 listed on my account
returned and bout el chepo nokia but kept the 1 gb sd card
called customer svc.
said problem with my g1 (ie. stuck on g1 screen)
paid 10 bucks for shipping and was sent a refurb g1 replacement
called back with *battery issues* not charging
was sent a battery
called htc and was sent a battery door
ok so i bout a data cable 15.00 + 10.00 for battery cover + 10.00 shipping from tmo = 35.00 not bad for a g1
if you try this i am not responsible for any resulting action you face, as i have friends at tmo and know tmo's policys and scripting and troubleshooting practicies
sorry about my spelling.

Bricking hero to get it replaced

My sprint store won't replace my Hero with dust under the screen >_<
So if I brick it, they will, correct?
Would brick by pulling battery during radio update or something.
Yeah...this is against your contract and such...if they can prove you bricked it they can say no...
This is incredibly unethical and results in higher costs for all of us. I understand you're upset that you have dust under your screen, but intentionally bricking your phone to get a replacement, that cost only gets passed on to everyone else.
I guess that you could argue that the product was defective and they ought to replace it anyway, but a little dust under the screen isn't the end of the world is it? I've got chipped paint on my back button and the case has a small crack where the mini-usb plugs in, should I brick my phone just to fix those minor issues?

I'm completely OCD about these things. Once I notice an issue that I didn't cause, it bothers the complete hell out of me.
Just take it to a local repair shop and pay the cost to have it cleaned/screen replaced.

Asides from all of that, as already mentioned this is unethical, and also illegal, you would be committing fraud. This is something in the same vein as insurance fraud. I don't condone such things. There are guides on the internet on how to openup your phone and clean out the dust, probably guides on how to stop it from happening again, look them up and give that a shot if the dust bothers you so much.

I would have to agree that the best option, (being money free) is to follow a guide to open up your phone and cleaning it yourself unless of course you would be voiding your warranty. However that seems to be not the case here.
to brick it, flash a gsm radio or rom. BUT "if" they catch it you will be charged for a new phone.

no need to clean it, just call sprint and they will send you another phone. i did and i got a new one a week ago. sprint knows about the dust defect.
Uhmmm. The answer to your question is yes. The bricked hero is going to go into a bucket of hero's at the HTC repair center and probably be recycled. There is no forensics team waiting to check every phone because of HOW it got screwed. I would keep it all stock though so if they do read it they wont see something that hasnt been released yet.
I would say the radio update trick may brick it but it would be best if the phone didnt even power on.
Also, don't feel bad. I am ocd about this stuff too and if I had dust under the screen in one hand, and a company like sprint trying back out of responsibility in the other, I would do the same thing. I could go on and on but its up to you to decide what the "right thing" to do is. And I personally feel that they should cover this stuff, so I have no moral or ethical problems with forcing a company to own up and care about their customers. Just be sure to take it to a sprint store you have never been to before.
FYI- I am a Sprint employee.. and I can tell you that as long as you're going to a COMPANY OWNED Sprint store, they will clean the dust out for you at no charge since you're still in warranty. If they do not, ask for a manager and let them know you don't want to have to email [email protected] (yes this actually works, and his executive escalation office really does read these emails.) If it is a repeated issue, they will eventually replace the phone for you, but it will likely be a reconditioned model (which are just as good as new.) The Hero comes apart very very easily and is very simple to clean. Good luck!

In other words, your telling him its ok to commit fraud, which is a felony. Its because of people like you, that a cell phone costs $500, pc's cost $1000's, insurance rates are high, health care is so expensive, etc.......Fraud accounts for probably a good majority of the cost of products and services. Imagine what it would be like if everybody actually took responsibility for their actions...Ah well..that'll never happen in this society that thinks it's entitled to everything for free.......

Use the OPEN enrollment on sprint to get TEP. (they have special now till the end of the month).. then take it in have them 'diagnose' it, and the worse case you pay 50 deductible to get it replaced, keep TEP until your satisfied.
I can usually get out of the TEP deductible by just going to a repair center and waiting for them to fix it.
Maybe that will work.. I had gone through 8 sprint moguls on TEP and never once had to pay the deductible by doing things this way.
TEP on smartphones is $100 not $50 deductible.
OK, first off... The OP never said he tried to fix it, he said he tried to REPLACE it. For all we know, he didn't go to a corporate repair store, just a sales location.
Second, for Fixxxer: if you went to a repair store and they felt uncomfortable opening up your hero? Change stores IMMEDIATELY. They're trained and paid to open up phones, if they can't do that, they're worthless.
Finally, Kkruse: The deductible is $100, hasn't been $50 for smartphones in over a year. Besides, a deductible should only be used for the following: Water damage, physical damage (I'd rather pay $120 on the spot to get it fixed), theft/loss, fire damage, complete devastation (aka motherboard shattered into more than 2 pieces). If you use the deductible for dust, send me the $100 instead, it'll get more use. Half of your insurance goes to free in store repairs. Guess what dust is covered under?

my phone is BRICKED FROYO PLZ HELP!!

Please confirm this :
when the little orange light on the upper right side of the screen doesn't light up anymore when the phone is plugged into the outlet, and the power button doesn't do anything including pushing vol down+ power and or pwr+trackball this means my phone is BRICKED i assume ?
I did a nandrroid backup, full wipe , flash from zip, restart , got a android out of the box , tried to flash again without wipe.. and thats it . i knew it right away when the phone wouldn't boot to recovery this is the end of my nexus one ????
i was trying to flash to the FRF50 going from cm5 i had an older recover RA 1.6.0
I have come to accept that i bricked my phone and now have to pay tmobile cancellation fee's and Google early termination fee
FOR SALE:
I have a
1)bricked nexus one.
2)brand new car dock
3) seidio battery
4) seidio case
sprint and HTC EVO 4g here i come!!!!
unless someone can save the day
which froyo rom did u try to flash? one with or without the radio included?
from sounds of it, prob the radio one since u saw the android out of box. Did you turn your device off while the android out of box was showing or did u allow for it to reboot it self?

why not just get HTC to fix it and pay their charges (~$150)
send it to HTC and see what they can do about it...
Take the battery out and leave it out for a minute. Hold down power for about 15 seconds and keep holding it while putting the battery in. Keep right on holding it for about 15 more seconds. The android out of the box was the radio flashing, it can take a few minutes and if you interupted that your in trouble. It would be cheaper to send it in to get it fixed and remember the lesson learned for next time.
If you interrupted it when the android arrow image was being displayed, you might have bricked. Always wait at least 5 minutes before interrupting during a flash.
Oh, and I'll probably take your car dock if you're selling it. Hope you can fix the phone though. It would probably be much cheaper to pay HTC to replace the mother board on it than to pay all those fees..
If your gonna pay those etf fees, why not just buty another phone to use on the t-mobile network?

Means you interrupt the radio flash, Android out of the box in the middle is the time where they are flashing the radio.
Any intteruption when flashing the radio means bricking the phone.
** I did interrupt it last time when I 1st flash the ROM with radio due to my impatient. The phone is brick and no way to get it back. The only way is send back to HTC for repairment (I assuming is replacement as I get back different unit where the IMEI code is totally different), if you are lucky enough you may get a free replacement. (I get mine but that is an old story, that time it seems I am the 1st bricking it)

im pretty sure its the one with the radio the one Paul had first posted, i think its the radio as well because after the install when i went to reboot if im not mistaken it said writing radio then it rebooted and i saw the android out of the box after that i was still able to get to the recovery and i tried to flash again the same rom. and after that it died i couldn't go to the fastboot / recovery when phone is plugged into the charger led doesn't go on with or without the battery i swapped batteries let the phone sit for a few hours nothing.
maybe wait for the OTA to release and just say you goofed on the installation?

With all the talk about possibly bricking phones

if you try to install custom roms at some point or another, who is thinking about getting insurance for their Droid X?
The only way to brick your phone is to install the wrong radio and/or SPL combination. Simply flashing a rom will not render your device permanently useless.
i always get insurance on my phones and its not because i flash custom roms. More for accidents and phyically breaking the phone. Such and awesome and EXPENSIVE device, you would be crazy not to insure it.
Would it be better to go with the $9.99 best buy warranty ( I hear there's no deductable) or $7.00 for verizon's?

Verizons definitely. The black tie protection offered by BB is crap.
Verizon's is $7/ month, right? Squaretrade.com is also an option, but their cost is pretty high on cell phone warranties.
edit: and what's the $9.99 BBY warranty? Do they bill it to you monthly? Online I just see the one-time $169.98 fee.
Check with your auto/home insurerer...I have state farm and was able to add smart phone coverage for $2/month. Full coverage no deductible, you break/lose it and they replace it.

Careful with the home owners. Two years ago there was a lot of stink over people not able to get insurance for next house because they had some minor claim. ANY claim on home owners was enough to get them denied on next house.
This route probably not what you want to do if you 'plan' on 'maybe' losing your phone.
Do your research.

Forced Update

Anyone get forced into updating? I have been delaying the update for a day, and it just suddenly rebooted my phone and tried to update it for me instead.
if you dont want the update then you better do something about it stat. get it rooted and either freeze a few particular files or get a custom rom on there.

Yeah 2 times. I didn't know that anyone can force you to do anything..... ATT is pushing MF3 like an mf..... I had mdl a "friend" Stole it and sold it.... lied to att. now have to buy a gs4 off craigslist stat. Or else I owe them 600 dollars.
You can get overnight repair if you call 611 and on att you have a year warranty havent said anything and I've bricked about five of these..... I have one to brick today so I can send it back... Read your contact. They can "upgrade" the firmware when ever they want. And quit bricking your phones. I hope you get caught.
You are a funny person. You really think sammy has time to check every single phone and even look at the software on it. You have a one year warranty. If I want to brick my damn phone because of "defective hardware" meaning if my q-fuse is not intact I dont want the phone. They are breaching their own contract when they blow a fuse on the board. I mean that is just a ridiculous way to **** us...... I wonder if we take it apart and just solder a trace where the q fuse was if we would be able to downgrade. But then of course I would be breaking my warranty.

Grow up dude. Take responsibility for yourself.
You should have read the contract with at&t before contracting. They have full rights to force an update regardless of any say you may have. They believe their forced updates benefit their carrier service and customer support, they'll never change that for the modding community. As for intentional bricking, if caught doing it multiple times it's considered warranty fraud which voids your warranty infinitely until getting a different device; and no you cannot fight it (try lol). Samsung themselves are strictly against rooting their new line of devices and have every right to modify your phone through at&ts forced updates to prevent it. Your options are either disable the updating, or flash a custom ROM which won't allow it.
There is multiple threads here that already explain all of this.

Former AT&T rep here. We have every right to deny you service for modifying or tampering with a device. Samsung can and will check the KNOX Warranty flag to see if it's been tripped, and if that's the case, you're liable. You are under a contract and service agreement. It's not the company's fault if the user didn't read the fine print and signed the contract anyway. That's called ignorance on your part.
Also, the fuse they blew is software based, but hardwired onto the board itself. Good luck with modifying that and seeing if it will stick. Also, don't be surprised if AT&T goes after you legally.

Anyone get forced into updating? I have been delaying the update for a day, and it just suddenly rebooted my phone and tried to update it for me instead.

Moto doesn't care either I've done the same thing with atrix. They don't have time to really gaf at this point.... Do you realize how many people a day send their phone in for warranty replacement.... and individuals check each and every phone. You blow my mind. I've been with ATT for 13 years.... Since the cingular days..... I signed a contract with Cingular. And ATT is Cingular they bought out ATT but kept their name.... I also have the grandfather plan and got my 10 dollars for the class action lawsuit for when they forced me to get a data plan when I got the first gen iphone.... So I am very experienced with ATT and they back down and ***** out at every threat..... I say I wan't to back out cause I do read fine print and they make me pay for unlimited data or what was then have the audacity to send me a message saying that I am a threat to the network because I am in the top 3 percent of data users..... hmmmmm theyve breached their own contracts..... They want to throttle my data but when I bought an iphone years ago they forced me to get an unlimited data plan.... hmmmmmm then want to throttle my data.... they do not care about their customers. Just money hungry giants and I will do everything in my power to **** them as hard as I can...... As for samsung..... I've read my contract with them about their device.... I'ts not theirs it's in my possession, ergo if I feel like breaking it via any software method I want to I have that right and they just have to keep them coming and keep on replacing them because I'll claim that kies did it every time and they can't take any legal action there is no way in hell they can prove that kies didn't brick my phone..... so thanks samsung for 9 gs4's you too ATT cause your reps are uneducated and I mean that is of course why they are reps and work for your company I bet they don't even have good benefits... wait that is a min wage job isn't it......? ATT is a joke and will soon go bankrupt..... Pretty bold statement? Talk to me in 5 years..... I signed my contract 13 years ago..... And I buy my new phones for 700 no contract extension... They've never sent me a revised version of it.... and after the first two years they just assumed I wanted to continue service with them without even asking me just continued to bill me..... Why are they offering phones running android which is based on Linux which is open sourced.... and that is what google intended it to be... that's why I had to get the nexus version. But also continue to have animosity toward ATT for all their bull****.
