What phone/criteria will make you switch?

It seems that the majority of Nexus owners here aren't too impressed with the new Nexus S. The manufactor is samsung, the specs are tame, and the hardware is at the current market's standard; more or less. The only reasons I see for an upgrade is for having the status and guarantee of getting future update first, pure google experience, and a slight update to the Nexus One. Gingerbread is moot since we'll be getting it as our last priority update.
With that being said, what device will stray you away from the best android phone ever? Any dual core slut? A hardware beast like the EVO?
The only phone that's stopping me from purchasing a Nexus S is the LG Star with dual core. However, do we know if this phone will follow Samsung's strategy of releasing to multiple carriers? Will it be a pure google flavor? Updates will surely be slow but how will the development community be for this phone?
Honestly my only criteria comes down to which device will be supported by this community. Software is a moot point when you have great developers improving it in everyway possible. I would really like to know what device Cyanogen will fall in love with!

Non-Samsung stock android phone.

I for one prefer Samsung hardware... sure it may be more plasticy than HTC phones, but the hardware is superior. The Galaxy touchscreen is far more accurate and smoother at tracking, can also handle up to 5 simultaneous inputs (MT4G can only do 4 and choppier). You'll never have dust under the screen with their AMOLED screens since the glass is practically on top of the screen, unlike HTC devices. The camera unit is superior to all HTC 5mp sensors (just by looking at it, the aperture is larger). The external speaker on the Galaxy S line is also superior to the N1's, MT4G, G2, etc. - better bass reproduction and less tinny, also louder. The quality of audio through headphones... also better because of Samsung's sound chip. All in all, there's not many things from a hardware perspective that HTC does better. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Camera nexus one is better - more pixels not mpx but some more pixels, sound through headphones is dependent on equaliser and stuff so with CM6 and poweramp u get mind blowing sound, EVO and incredible can handle infinite touches, u can stick any glass to the screen. Thing thing is if glass breaks screen is gonna break 99% and if its not stuck to screen there are chances the display will remain good. It has both good and bad points. Every screen doesnt have dust under it, None of my HTC phones ever did, dont know about speaker but audio through did sound awful on galaxy s

this and decent build quality, like the nexus one.
one thing i'd really need is a better/louder speaker, the n1 one sucks soooo much.

I'm hoping the Motorola Olympus on ATT will be as good as the rumors - I'm on an ATT Nexus One since March, and have got the upgrade bug for a few reasons:
1. bigger screen - 3.7" is too small for me. 4.3" would be ideal, but I need a phone on ATT because I'm due for an upgrade and I can sell the N1 for about what I'd get a new phone on contract on ATT.
2. better touch screen, the N1 has occasional (although rare) issues with touch screen accuracy, not to mention no true multitouch. (not really a problem, other than in an occasional game or rotating in some apps)
The additional upgrades, such as the rumored 1GB of ram and the upgraded cpu/gpu, are all icing on the cake. Hopefully it'll be compatible with Netflix's requirement for additional DRM on Android phones, and that's gravy on top of the icing on the cake.

I guess it's pretty much the same thing as the Nexus One but Dual Core and higher Ram. I'm hoping next year's Google's "baby" will be back to HTC (please don't make it Samsung or Moto)

I know we're all excited about dual core but do you think Android will take advantage of it? Is the speed really going to be noticable?
I really just want dual core for the battery savings aspect and better gaming.

You're almost guaranteed dual core will make battery life worse, not better.
For a dual core to be any better, the computation efficiency needs to have a sharper gradient than that of the power efficiency. Or else, running a single core for X time might mean less power than running 2 cores for Y time.
Besides, the reason i hate my nexus one is the abysmal touch screen. It gets confused ALL the F'ing time.

App storage...Touch screen...GPS/wifi/3g etc..batterylife.
None of those things should be an issue.
Give me at least 2-3 of the top portion...and all of Tue bottom I'd switch asap.

If I had to upgrade I would consider the following:

I LOVE the trackball on the Nexus. I have a BlackBerry Tour with an optical sensor and I hate it. While it DOES work, it lacks sensitivity and accuracy. Both gaming and office/texting/website entry all benefit from having a trackball. Selecting text on my Blackberry is a pain. Also using a full touch method blows chunks too, similar to the iApple and Android Web Browser method. It's hard to select JUST the text you want.
Other stuff should just work. Also a hot-swappable microSD card would be nice. Although I really never have to remove it using Android, the occasional pulling of pictures and stuff is faster to just pull the SD card = no phone.
Even though I don't currently use the Desktop or Car port, I think the idea of having such is great. I'm wanting a few Desk docks for my office and bed side but waiting on some good prices.

Honestly, I don't see any amount of hardware changes that would make me switch, that is until Honeycomb comes out. The Nexus, while having it's fair share of issues, is getting Gingerbread before even most new phones will get it and will run the new software just fine. So to me there's no point switching to any other phone except the Nexus S and that's only if you want the latest gadget/tech toy. I know alot of you guys drool over dual core but it's not like android is pushing 1st gen snapdragons to the limit yet. I'll let the software catch up to the current tech before I make a switch.

My dream phone? It'd have:
fastboot oem unlock
A trackball, or an optical one but with a rim that lights up (for notifications), a la E71
A processor speedy enough to carry day-to-day stuff, not necessarily dual-core
A LARGE /data partition (at least 1GB)
Working multi-touch
A keyboard (I got used to touchscreens for typing, but I still consistently type faster with my N900, even though I barely use it today)
At least triband HSPA/HSPA+ (900, 1700, 2100), like the Nexus One has, when I have to go to North America (I'm currently in Europe, and no, we don't only use 2100 MHz, we're slowly switching everything to 900 MHz)
Quality materials, like the N1 has
Basically, I want a Desire Z but easily unlockable by supported methods, and tri-band HSPA+. I know it's stupid to avoid the DZ because of the radio, but if I buy it in Europe with the right keyboard layout for my language (French AZERTY), I also want to be able to use it in NA.

For me, it would have to be the camera and hardware of the phone (style). I don't really give a toot about processor speeds.
One phone that really fits my criteria is the Nokia N8 but, unfortunately, the software on that phone is terrible. If it had Android on it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

[Q] In a nutshell...

Love my N1. Should fellow N1 owners get the S or is it not worth it? Been thinking a lot about it, but just not so sure. Looks like there are a lot of haters, and no real conclusion.
To buy or not to buy, that is the question.

- NFC technology
- More powerful GPU
- More powerful CPU
- Front Facing Camera
- True/Accurate Multitouch
You lose
- Mirco SD slot
- Trackball (Never used it in the first place)

Of course its worth.
N1 doesn't compare to NS. Working multitouch, Faster GPU, Bigger screen, SAMOLED, Phone IMO looks allot better and sleeker, 2.3, Takes better pictures, FFC, better external speaker, Its compatible with Googlemap 5 new features, 1GB of storage for your apps

In similar questions/posts my short answer has been:

I like my Nexus S quite a bit more than my N1. If I don't sell my N1 it will be for sentimental reasons. I would never go back to using the N1 as a daily phone now that I have the NS.

Another ex-N1 person here. No question - Nexus S was worth it. Don't miss the SD Card at all. Miss the trackball for the notification (but NoLED works OK), everything else is better - most especially the screen and the battery life.

I was EXTREMELY sceptical, now I am EXTREMELY in love with the S.

Yes it's worth it. The Nexus One with only about 125megs of usable storage space for app installs is my number one complaint and frustration with the Nexus One.

The s rocks, having a real multitouch screen is reason enough.

I didn't come from a n1, came from vibrant, and I love this phone. Don't even believe the hype that this just another galaxy phone. Doesn't remind me of my vibrant one bit.
The only dislike I have with this phone is some browser lag which I understand will be fixed via update soon I hope.

[Q] What Are Our Options Now?

I tried the Atrix and HTC Inspire in-store, and while I absolutely want an upgrade, I'm not convinced either is good enough, and am looking beyond to the next wave of Android phones on AT&T, unless nothing better is coming anytime soon.
I am subject to an odd process where I put in for an upgrade now and will get approval in four months, at which point I get to choose a new phone, which means I merely need to know that a phone I want will be available four months from now. If a good phone is coming in 5 or 6 months, it makes sense to wait, otherwise, I can put in now and see, four months from now, if the Atrix's bootloader has been smashed to hell and good custom ROMs are available, and if not, get an Inspire.
So, what good-looking Android phone are here or on the way. Here's what I've been able to determine, with pros and cons:

Looking at all that, I'm thinking that the best bet is that the only true Atrix competitor is the S2, and assume that it will come out mide July, like the Captivate. I can put in for an upgrade in late March, which should give the S2 enough time to come to market and be reviewed, plus the Atrix to hopefully get some ROMs, and make the call.
Are there any other phones worth looking forward to? Is there any other reason to choose the Inspire or Infuse, or to not put my chips on the Atrix or Infuse?

There is always going to be a group of new phones coming out soon. I'd say just pick the one you like the most at the time. If something else you can't live without comes out in a few months (and it will) just sell the phone you bought to cover most of the out of contract price of your next one.
I returned my Inspire to get the Atrix so that's where I stand there.
I would never buy another Samsung Android device unless the show a commitment to upgrading. They tend to just want you to buy the next phone instead.
LG Optimus looks nice, but I hate LG phones so I'd stay away. Generally poor build quality and software.

In here you are limiting your population to people that are looking about Atrix specific stuff.

I'm typing this on my inspire. Saying that, I love it a lot. It is my first android, and in my opinion probably the best way to enter it.
My only complaint is the battery. Even being small, it does power management well and lasts longer than my dads iphone 3gs. (maybe some debate if that's froyo I guess)
With rooting/roms, I'm sure I could make the battery last longer by removing bloat ware and stuff.
the way I see it, phones are out matched months after they come out. Better phones will be developed even after phones are announced. That's what competition does to technology. So why torture yourself thinking about what MAY come out, when months later better suff will be out.

Absolutely. I think that what it comes down to is:
The Atrix got us all very excited, but the excitement is fading under a number of negatives:
1 - terrible pricing on the dock and tethering policy
2 - Motorola's pointless signing of the bootloader, which only removes value from the device
3 - the laptop dock has a lot of dissapointments (touchpad, speed)
On the other hand, the Atrix is still an incredible phone, and it goes us excited for some great reasons:
1 - killer processor
2 - huge battery
3 - unique features (docks, fingerprint reader)
4 - somewhat rare features (front facing camera, lots of internal [non-MicroSD] storage, HDMI out)
What makes it tough is the Galaxy S2, which doesn't have the unique features, but has everything else the Atrix has and more
Vs. Atrix:
Atrix negatives:
2 - Samsung's are easier to load custom ROMs on
Atrix positives:
1 - Also has a killer processor, one that, when tested, could even beat the Atrix
2 - Larger than average battery
4 - better rare features (better front facing camera, more internal storage
And its own positives:
1 - better camera
2 - Super AMOLED plus screen (amazing bright colors, lower power usage)
3 - bigger screen
4 - Gyroscope
5 - 1080p video
And just one known negative:
1 - Lower resolution screen
So, what this thread should really be is:
Do you still want the Atrix, or do you plan on waiting just 5 months for the Galaxy S2?

My upgrade date is in three days, I'm hoping that they'll crack the bootloader issue for the atrix pretty soon, I will not buy the phone without it.
The only real con I see for the Atrix is the lack of an LTE radio on it, if you get one you'll be stuck with it for the next two years ( unless you want to pay full price ) and LTE should be up and running ( in some areas ) in that time frame.
Even though I've been an ATT customer for 8 years I hold no loyalty to them, I'm waiting for more info to come on the HTC " pyramid " and could switch to T-Mobile if that phone has a bigger battery than the pathetic things that HTC puts in them now. We all know HTC seems to be the devs favorite brand and CM would positively fly on a dual core phone.

After owning a Craptivate I wont even consider another Samsung phone. I don't care how impressive the specs are Samsung will find a way to screw it up. If you don't like the Atrix then just wait a few months for the next great HTC phone. The Inspire is nice, but it' s just a lightly upgraded Evo and cant compete with the Atrix.

I love HTC, and really wanted my next phone to be an HTC. But I feel like I can't rely on them to bring good hardware to AT&T. My current phone is their Rhodium, and since then I've seen:
Droid Incredible - Looks great, not on AT&T
Desire Z - Great keyboard, not on AT&T
Evo - Kinda special at the time, but not on AT&T
7 Pro - Amazing keyboard, probably never coming to AT&T
Aria - Wonderful phone, my wife loves it, but not for power users
I felt like HTC all of a sudden decided it hated AT&T. Now we've got two new ones:
Inspire - updated Evo, decent but old hat, doesn't stand up to the other phones released at the time
Thunderbolt - slightly better than the Inspire, not coming to AT&T
I hope HTC comes up with something special by summer, but I'm not holding my breath. I am on my fourth consecutive HTC phone, and right now, it looks like my last.

The prime of life
Sadly there's no indication of whether or not the remaining speculated specs are accurate – we still have our fingers crossed for a 1.5GHz dual core processor.
One thing that seems certain is that if this launches as the Google Nexus Prime, the handset will be the Ice Cream Sandwich launch device.
With everyone and his dog anticipating an autumn release for the next Google OS, the Nexus Prime's release date can't be far off now.

I think I read/listened somewhere that the buttons are going away(there capacitive anywhos so its like using the screen anyways) The screen with that low resolution eh its still a small screen so

If ICS is a GB/HC mashup that is seamless between phones and tablets it would only make sense to take away the capacative buttons on a phone.

I was kind of hoping the rumors about the Prime having a Super Amoled HD screen were true :/

I wont be getting a Prime, but Ill be interested to see the direction things are going with regards to screen size. Personally I find the 4" screen on the NS just about perfect. Anything wider than that is much less pocket friendly.

If you think about it, remove the capacative buttons on the NS and fill that space with screen and it wouldn't make MUCH of a difference lol
Thats my opinion tho...I really hope it has that HD screen...and a better camera, etc...if it has microSD card slot then im sold lol

The next Google dev device will NOT be on verizon first. They may get a 'droid prime' but it wont be a nexus

Given the time frame Samsung has given for rollout of the new screens and the screen sizes they'll be initially available for, this seems possible, but I'm not sure it ascends to the level of likely. Still, I'm with you in hoping.

i'll probably get the Samsung Nexus 3 if they really releases it with 32GB for Tmobile
a Nexus is always by far a much safer choice, when you want to have the latest and newest in the development arena
however the short of microSD and old 5mpix camera is really a big no no for me
Samsung Galaxy 2 for Tmobile (aka Hercules) has the perfect spec that i seek, but development support is a wild bet, at least it'll have CM7

More "SD" space is good, though if they do that I hope they also increase the "internal" partition. For my purposes, though, a storage expansion isn't a big deal. For me, the biggest things hardware wise are camera (a better camera that takes better pictures, not necessarily an 8+ MP one), RAM (I'll be very disappointed to see less than 1GB, and I wouldn't even say no to twice that), and battery life (if you can make it last twice as long by making the phone a few millimeters thicker, for god's sake, just make the phone thicker). T-Mobile compatibility is also important for me, but just in general I think having it available on more carriers faster (preferably simultaneously) is better.
All the other goodies are fine and dandy, and would certainly affect my decision whether to buy it, but those are the biggest things for me.

Waiting for those official specs...

Please have a notification LED.
No buttons means we can't create a makeshift notification system a la BLN (which was absolutely genius by the way).
Even the SGS II cannot use BLN to it's fullest capacity as their devices require a wakelock to keep the keys on which destroys battery. BLN was just fortunate enough in all aspects (stability, reliability, battery) to be something that the Galaxy S line and the Nexus S could fully enjoy.
I probably wouldn't be using my Nexus S right now without BLN. I truly think an external indicator is THAT important. So please please please give us one.

I'm the opposite. I've had bln on all my device until the nexus s. Phones never leave my hand so I never used it. I would always disable it. Different strokes.

I don't personally feel like I need a notification light, but it's one of those things that seems like it ought to be simple and cheap enough to include for those who do. I've been somewhat intrigued by how ongoing standby notifications in general- visual and aural- have been vanishing over the past couple years. I suppose it's because with smartphones these days they expect you'll be using the thing constantly anyway. >.>

Galaxy S3 Positive Thread

Sick of reading the prophets of doom and naysayers saying "fail,fail" you've made your point so i guess you wont be buying one then therefore you most likely won't be sticking around these forums then eh!!
This thread is for positive comments only, i for one am delighted with this release it is pretty much what i expected to be honest with a few added surprises, the early review from the Tech Radar website is very positive indeed and i am looking forward to getting this superb phone although it will be a wrench to sell my SGSII but ill have to do so to part fund buying the Galaxy S3,

I am looking forward to the USA announcement and hope they don't change it too much from the international version.

Positive comment:
The Galaxy S III will be nice for someone who is ok with getting uninspired upgrades from last years model and don't care about the negatives such as:
- battery (not 2500mAh like the Note?)
- camera (still the same 8mp camera as the 12 month old SII?)
- screen (same screen as the 6 month old Galaxy Nexus?)
- UI (touchwiz + hardware keys)
- Design (yuck)

what part of my OP did you not understand take your poxy negativity off this thread and go elsewhere ok

well u must admit the design of a phone really influences ones purchase of said phone. the sgs 3 design really looks bad which is (as i see it) the main reason why a lot of people are so disappointed.
however i think i will still be upgrading to the sgs 3 from my sgs 2. the new hardware + better batter is enough to justify my purchase of the sgs 3. though im pretty sure it wont last me as long as the sgs 2 did which i bought at launch.

They MIGHT change the design for the US, and include an S4 processor for even more battery life!

Definitely an upgrade from the nexus: bigger battery, removable storage and a physical home button (always hit the capacitive home button when pressing space bar).
Hopefully they'll pop in a beastly S4 snapdragon and this comes to Verizon in early June!

I honestly don't believe many people will have a positive thing to say. It's not a very revolutionary phone as the S2 was. The US version will be a S4 snapdragon most likely, I just wish there was a Exynos 5 dual model. Then I may actually get it.

Ive no problem with the design and personally speaking it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but each to their own, the 2,100 mAh battery is a big improvement on the current SGSII and that can only be very good news.
Early reviews on various websites are very good indeed, to be honest some people will never be happy and will always find time to complain that is just what some people are like i suppose that is no problem just not on this thread please.

Jesus, how can anyone say 2100 is a fail when it's one of the best on the market except for the 5.3" note ?
I'm also pissed off about these trolls I mean it isn't anything else it's just blatant off topic trolling, I think I will pm some moderators
Personnally I ike the design and as I said in another thread, from the few videos I've seen it just feels soo responsive and smooth, can't wait for june to get my hands on mine

You guys should know by now that whenever a new phone is released. Xda is the place to read all negative aspects of a new device and see pages full of "fail" this and that. Just come back when development starts happening because that's when the trolls are usually gone. For now, I'm going to other forums for discussions.
Btw, if a battery with 2100 mah is horrible, then you loose all credibility. This is the Galaxy S III not the Galaxy Note II.

these are the positives things one can say about the sgs3 compared to the sgs2 for now.
1 - 720p screen with slightly less saturated colours than previous super amoled screens.
2 - 60% faster gpu
3 - 2100 mha battery.
4 - various software improvements especially to the camera though some not all are a bit gimmicky.
5 - hardware buttons. (i like hardware buttons)
6 - quad core processor.
7 - bluetooth 4.0
8 - up to 64 gigs of internal memory
maybe someone can say more?

the only positive thing about the S3 are its new core apps, i dig them all

Design is in fact the only negative thing I have to say about the S3. I don't mind the plastic feel, the non SAMOLED+ screen (it's HD, I know I won't tell the difference), the fact that it's quad-core or that it's the same awesome 8MP camera (again, more MP does not equal better). In fact, this phone, though only an incremental upgrade over SII, is pretty much everything I was looking for when I heard about the Galaxy Nexus; I was disappointed by the GNex's 5MP camera (needed one to replace my old 8MP point-and-shoot) and non-expandable memory, so I opted for AT&T's cheaper OG SII. The SIII fulfills everything I was initially looking for and adds more. I even like the bigger HD screen. What I don't like is the bigger housing. I think software buttons would have made this my really-want phone, simply because my SII is already a little cumbersome in my pocket with its case (I dare not take off that case, I'm too clumsy). Case is an essential for me regardless of which phone I buy, so as much as I want this phone, it's just too big for practicality for me.
....even then, if I had a contract upgrade (which I don't :/) and AT&T offers it later, so long as they don't royally screw the specs I would seriously consider it, because as I stated before, it's everything I was looking for when I bought my SII: large HD beautiful screen, fast processor, 1 GB ram, expandable memory, awesome camera (annoying shutter lag on SII, so I'm looking forward to SIII), and great battery life (which of course, remains to be seen).

no big things to worth the money, ill skip this gen
S2 does the trick for the next years

Indeed asides from the obvious quad core processor,etc the larger capacity battery is a massive plus, battery life is very important for me personally, it took me a good while and many many tweaks to achieve good battery life from my SGSII mostly by freezing all the Samsung bloatware in Titanium backup and ill most likely be doing the same with the Galaxy S3, 64GB of memory with the option of a 64GB Micro SD card too is superb.
